Book Description

The Buen Retiro, a royal retreat and pleasure palace, was built for Philip IV on the outskirts of Madrid in the 1630s. With its superb display of paintings by Vel‡zquez and other contemporary artists, the palace became a showcase for the art and culture of Spain's Golden Age. A Palace for a King, first published to wide acclaim in 1980, provided a pioneering total history of the construction, decoration, and uses of a major royal palace, emphasizing the relationship of art and politics at a critical moment in European history. In this extensively revised edition, the authors review the scholarship produced on different aspects of the history of the palace and its decoration over the past quarter century. A number of new, previously unpublished illustrations have been added, and many of the plates are now reproduced in color.

5 out of 5 stars How can a book involving Philip IV *not* get five stars?.......1999-06-20

On March 31, 1621, Philip III, third Habsburg ruler of Spain, met a premature death, reportedly clutching in panic at the same crucifix his father and grandfather had held on their deathbeds generations before. His son and heir, the sixteen-year-old Philip IV, succeeded to what is now known collectively as the Spanish Empire - a vast conglomeration of lands and people whose progressive decline as a political entity has long remained a basic assumption amongst twentieth century historians and yet whose cultural vitality has given its period the title of "The Golden Age of Spanish Art." The accession of Philip IV seemed to inaugurate a new era of reform after the previous regime's mindless inactivity and self-interested grandee domination. As the contemporary playwright Tirso de Molina remarked, "New architects acceded with the new king."

This premise serves as the central metaphor in A Palace for a King. Elliott, a historian, and Brown, an art historian, examine both the literal and political architecture of the reign, charting the complicated, often surprising interrelation between art and politics. The palace of the title is the Buen Retiro - an intended recreational center built for Philip IV with astonishing speed during the years 1630-33, left largely in neglect after the 1640's, and finally decimated by French and English troops during the Napoleonic wars. In reconstructing the circumstances surrounding its construction and initial occupation, Brown and Elliott attempt to furnish the reader with a "total" history of the Spanish Habsburg court during its penultimate representative's first twenty years of rule.

The scope of the book is immense. In a prose that is precise and elegant, if at times monotonous, it describes the political and economic issues of the day as well as the relationship between the continuously vacillating king and his powerful minister, the Count-Duke of Olivares, who until 1643 held the true control over Spanish government. It then goes on to analyze the palace of the Buen Retiro itself, exploring the process of palace-building and the symbolism of the palace as a repository of the values of the ruling class. Simultaneously, it looks at Spanish baroque painting, theater, and architecture and their inextricable connection to the court at Madrid, which, itself, was in so many ways like a giant theater. Elliott's inquiry and interpretation of the troubles besetting the institution that was then called the monarquía española and of the role played by Olivares makes for particularly rewarding reading.

The book appears to be extremely well-researched and provides an abundance of evidence from primary sources as varied as confidential memoranda, secret expense accounts and drawings of architectural plans; the endnotes alone constitute twenty of its almost three hundred pages. However, it is its very wealth of references and information that also lies at the core of its greatest weakness. Too often, the text becomes bogged down in statistics, where apparently meaningless figures about who paid whom and whose plot of land was where replace any real insights. The authors seem to become trapped in unneeded details, losing track of the larger picture that they originally intended to convey. As a result, in certain chapters, more attention than necessary is devoted to the actual logistics of building the palace and, consequently, not enough to the palace's political, social, and economic implications.

Still, aside from these slightly irritating flaws, Brown and Elliott's work remains a highly absorptive and very informative look at subject that has thus far remained sadly underrepresented amongst the scientific community. The sheer extent of the information to be found makes this book a valuable resource for anyone interested in the period, while the distressing lack of similar studies makes it absolutely essential for those at all curious about Spain's architectural history. It is, in my mind, a fascinating complement and worthy companion to R.A. Stradling's landmark Philip IV and the Government of Spain.

Ever wonder what it would be like to walk into someone else's mind and have a look around? Well, what if that person happened to be a brilliant storyteller whose imagination has captivated millions of readers over the past five decades? In the award-winning anthology Harlan Ellison's Dream Corridor, we have had both the privilege and peril of rooting around in the eponymous fellow's noggin to see what makes him tick - and what engrossing stories have been hidden away in the cracks and crevices of his gray matter. The words of world-renowned science-fiction author Harlan Ellison are once again translated onto the page by top comics creators, including Paul Chadwick, Neal Adams, Steve Rude, Gene Colan, Steve Niles, Gerard Jones, Richard Corben and the legendary Oz illustrator Eric Shanower. Most of these stories have never before seen print!

    5 out of 5 stars !!!!!.......2007-05-23

An EXCELLENT collection of hardcore fantasy and science fiction. Harlan Ellison is the master of his trade. Here, like before, he's the tour guide, giving tidbits of information about who drew and penciled what, his inspirations, autobiographical details, etc. It's a good selection of stories; each one is imaginatively illustrated in a different and distinct style by top notch artists, providing for an unpredictable, sometimes disturbing, sometimes whimsical journey. I think Ellison is best when visualized like this, and Dream Corridor (both volumes) is some of my favorite work by the author. A great buy for both fans and newcomers.

Unlike authors who agree to have their work adapted to comics yet remain distant from the finished product, Harlan Ellison loves comics and loves that he has his own comic book. Dream Corridor is essential for die-hard Ellison fans, not only because of the 14 adaptations of his short stories, but also because it contains 5 all-new prose pieces. One of the prose pieces, "Chatting with Anubis," won the Deathrealm Award and the Horror Writers Association's Bram Stoker Award for best short story of 1995. If you're not familiar with Ellison's work, Dream Corridor is a great sampler, and it's loaded with a diversity of art styles with illustrations by top-notch artists, including Doug Wildey, Michael T. Gilbert, Gary Gianni, Teddy Kristiansen, and David Lapham. "The End Time of Leinard," "On the Slab," "Knox," "The Rough Boys," and "Cold Friend" are just a few of the stories adapted.

    Book Description

Harlan Ellison is surely one of the most creative thinkers of our time -- his stories of the fantastic have captured the imaginations of millions of people over the last four decades. In this trade paperback, some of the comics industry's wildest and most original talents adapt Ellison's greatest stories to the comic-book format. Such renowned writers and illustrators as Len Wein, Pat Broderick, Doug Wildey, Phil Foglio, Gary Gianni, Teddy Kristiansen, Max Allan Collins, Tom Sutton, Skip Williamson, Peter David, Mike Deodato, and David Lapham bring to life such award-winning stories as "The End of the Time of Leinard," "Rat Hater," "Knox," "The Rough Boys," and "Catman," as well as nine others. Ellison's interstitial pages -- introducing and commenting on the adaptations -- transmogrified into art by famed OZ artist Eric Shanower -- are included in this 192-page collection, as are the five short stories Ellison wrote especially for the Dream Corridor series (one of which, "Chatting with Anubis," recently won both the Deathrealm Award and the Horror Writers Association's Bram Stoker Award as best short story of 1995). Includes an art gallery by Michael Whelan, Stephen Hickman, and Overton Loyd, and features a cover by Leo and Diane Dillon. If you've ever wondered what preoccupies the mind of a creative genius, just take a walk down Harlan Ellison's Dream Corridor.

    5 out of 5 stars Quite a treat.......2001-09-07

One of my favorite comic books. I read it weekly. Anything by Ellison is worth buying and this collection is definily worth it. The best story is probably Rat Hater.

3 out of 5 stars Not good, not bad ..........2001-08-31

What we have here is Harlan Ellison having some of his short stories (of which he has written over two thousand) adapted into being graphic stories.

An illustrated character (Ellison himself) takes the reader into his "corridor of dreams" where all the stories he ever wrote are stored in departments. He guides us through the humungous building and opens a department every now and then. Everytime he does the tour is interrupted and we get to read a selected short story ( a window-tale if you will), adapted into comicdom by different people (Len Wein, Michael T. Gilbert and others).
In this particular book are five of those short-stories which vary in quality. I definately want to point out "Rat-hater", a story about a guy taking revenge in the most gruesome way he can think of on a guy who is responsible for his sisters death. To my taste this is the best story in the book (both the story as the painted art are not to be missed). Some of the others are nice (The Len Wein story and something called "On the Slab") but there's also a story done by Phil Foglio about which you'll probably feel sorry you took the time for it afterwards.
Between the several short stories, in the sequences where Ellison takes the reader from one department to another, Ellison uses some pages to take some personal shots at people who in his eyes wrongfully criticezed his work, in a pretty chauvinistic way.
The last two pages contain part of a new never-printed-before piece of proze by Ellison.

All in all the conclussion I must come to is that this is not a spectacularly good book. There are some nice (not great) stories in here and there are some lesser ones.... As it is it's quite enjoyable but only worth the money for true Harlan Ellison fans who can't get enough of him.

1 out of 5 stars Could be much better.......1999-06-30

This collection has so many problems - mainly, the selection of stories. These tales are by no means his best, or even his better ones. They seem like second-hand-twilight-zone stories: extremely predictable, and might I say... amateurish? Also, the artists chosen for these adaptations could have used some reconsideration. "Knox" has some interesting (?), abstract work, and "On the Slab" is beautiful, but the rest can go. Plus, several prose pieces are included, and if I wanted that, I'd buy one of his novels! Finally, "I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream", part of the original comic series, and probably the most well-done, is not included. Boo, hiss.

1 out of 5 stars This book is borring dribble.......1999-06-17

If the reader wants a series of borring, unimaginative, and childish "stories" this is the book for you. Harlan has a way of boldly stating facts and ideas in this book as though they are his own when in reality, they are the same tired old stories, ideas, and viewpoints you have heard from many many other people over the years. In the end you kind of feel sorry for the guy. Doesn't Harlan know what this makes him look like?

5 out of 5 stars "...a jolt to the brain and a feast for the eyes!".......1997-11-13

Ellison once wrote that there are "five native American art forms that we've given to the world: Jazz, of course. Musical comedy as we know it today. The detective story as crafted by Poe. The banjo. And comic books." On display between these covers are some of the finest examples of comic book art and writing. "Dream Corridor" sprang to life after Showtime and HBO (having solicited him for an ongoing series) balked at paying Ellison for typing up proposals for a cable TV show. Still intrigued with the thought of having his tales transformed into the visual medium, Ellison came up with the idea for this ongoing series of quarterly comic books. Then he had them adapted by some of the finest writers and artists working in the medium (Faye Perozich, Peter David, Max Alan Collins, Doug Wildey, John K, Snyder, Mike Deodato, etc.). And to make the package twice as enticing, each issue of "Dream Corridor" included an original piece of cover artwork (beautifully drawn by the likes of Leo and Diane Dillon, Stephen Hickman or Sam Raffa)around which Ellison would write a brand new story. Not a few of those stories are already considered some of Ellison's best work in recent years: "Pulling Hard Time" is a hard-hitting, futuristic tale which begs a closer examination of our penal system and the often lopsided scales of justice. "Chatting With Anubis," a recent winner of the Bram Stoker Award from the Horror Writers of America, is a sly rumination on gods and what happens when the believers stop believing. And "Midnight In the Sunken Cathedral" is a haunting story about a son who transcends time and space to confront the father he never knew. This collection of the first year's output from "Harlan Ellison's Dream Corridor" is a jolt to the brain and a feast for the eyes! It's sure to attract new fans to a much maligned form of art.

            5 out of 5 stars Bene bene..........2005-11-17

This is an audio-tape compilation of two of Henry Beard's books, 'Latin for All Occasions' and 'Latin for Even More Occasions'.

These wonderful little books were presented to me many years ago after I had completed a Latin seminar. It was a wonderful gift, and I have found much use for the various phrases, and an extraordinary amount of humour that can be derived from the blandest of statements when translated into Latin. For example, the innocuous phrase 'Darn! There goes my beeper!' becomes quite funny in Latin:

            Heu! Tintinnuntius meus sonat!

One has visions of Caesar fumbling through his tunic for some beeping object.

So, if you need a little Latin on the golf course (Alterum ictum faciam); on the tennis court (minime latum!), at the beach when spotting a shark (Pistrix! Pistrix!), or you just need to say Illud Latine dici non potest (you can't say that in Latin), you'll be prepared with this volume.

It even comes with a section on what to say when at the Vatican (where it might truly come in handy). For instance you might need to say 'Ubi possum potiri petasi similis isti?' when passing a cardinal or nun (translation: Where can I get a hat like that?).

After Beard's first book, 'Latin for All Occasions', one might say his second book was a case of deja vu, or prius visum, as the Latin would have it.

Who said Latin wasn't useful? Henry Beard, in this volume and its predecessor, demonstrates that it is very useful, and not just for identifying a dish on a menu in Rome that looks suspiciously like the Latin word for 'eel'.

Beard notes that even French sounds even better in Latin:

            Savoir faire = Scire facere
            Nouveau riche = Novissime locupletatus
            Merde! = Merda!

From there we proceed to philosophy:

            Cogito, ergo sum
            Sum, ergo edo.
            Cogito sumere potum alterum.
(I think, therefore I am. I am, therefore I eat. I think I'll have another drink.)

And lest we forget, the memorable Latin phrase for use at a toga party:

            Toga! Toga! Toga!
(memorise this, for it will be on the test)

There are things here for sports fans, pop culture fans, those about to celebrate and those who want to be casual. If you want to sound intelligent while saying you think you've just spotted Elvis in the crowd, this book can tell you how to bring up the subject intelligently.

If Caesar had had this book, he might have rephrased his famous utterance as
Veni, vidi, nates calce concidi! (I came, I saw, I kicked butt!).

            Divinissimum est!

Proving once again, some people have far too much time on their hands. And we are more fortunate for that!

So, don't waste your time on watching reruns of Insula Gilliganis or game shows such as Periculum and Rota Fortunae -- pick up this book today, and merge the worlds past and present.

Die dulci fruere. (Have a nice day.)

5 out of 5 stars The Bible for Beginning Actors.......2004-06-18

Mr Logan's book is the most succinct and thorough guide for beginning actors that I've come across. The recommendations and advice given in the book is based on 30 years experience as a WORKING director in Hollywood. Unlike most acting coaches who are has-beens or never-will-bes and who give outdated or inacurate instruction, Mr Logan gives current and reliable advice collected methodically and tested over decades.

Mr Logan's writing style makes the book a quick and enjoyable read. I highly recommend this book to any beginning actor or anyone who is unhappy with their career development. And if you're lucky enough to have Mr Logan give a workshop in your town, don't miss it!

Easy to understand, funny and straight forward.... And to the point! People understand better when you get down to there level. And Mr. Logan can do just that in this book! I can keep praising this book all day! But I want you to read it and find out for yourself! You will be glad you did!

This book is a great resource for new initiates as well as veteran jazz lovers. It will help anyone to get a clear understanding of what jazz is all about -- individual expression and passion. Gridley fills in gaps that you can't get from reading liner notes alone. This overview breaths life into each stage in the evolution of jazz in America.

NOT Cryptic CROSSWORD Puzzles! It is a series of logic-type puzzles, divided into categories of difficulty. The presentation of the about 90 puzzles is quite good and very colorful. The explanations are very limited, as the book is about 4" by 5".

5 out of 5 stars Great Package! - THIS ONE WORKS........2005-08-31

I have purchased probably 5 business plan books and software packages over the last 8 years. None of them were clear enough or easy enough to get me through the process of writing a good, complete business plan. This one really works. I sat down with the book and software, and over the course of a week, wrote a business plan that has received great results. Every business owner needs a business plan and this is somethig that you really do have to do for yourself. Unfortunately, writing a good business plan does not come easily to many people. This book will get you through the process, and you will end up with a good plan.
My only complaint is that the software is windows only.

I am an proficient writer, but I had never written a business plan before, so I had trouble getting started. Of the three books I purchased on writing business plans, this one was the most helpful because it provides "lead ins" to get me started, with suggestions for elaborating on details. For example, "Our key competitive advantage is..." The lead-ins are tailored for varying business sizes--from small start-ups to large establishments.

Over a few days, I was able to assemble a skeleton of a business plan. After researching my industry for marketing and competition, I was able to fill in the sections I had outlined with the use of the book. My business plan was well-received by bankers and business people. It gave me confidence from having done thorough research on operating the business.

I had bought a used paperback version (without software) on Amazon for $6.00. In hindsight, the software may have saved typing time. I couldn't have written my business plan without this book!

4 out of 5 stars Perfect for Novices and Pros.......2004-01-10

From time to time I have a client who needs a business plan. Most have no idea where to begin and really no desire to write a plan. I would often be asked to write the plan for them, but without a real template or software geared to it, it was like re-inventing the wheel everytime.

A few months ago I picked up this book, and the accompanying software, and my job was suddenly made easier. The instructions are easy to folllow and the software is easy to use, a plus for a non-technical type like myself. Right now I'm even using it to put together my own business plan.

If you are seeking an easy to read and use guide to business plans, I recommend this one.

4 out of 5 stars Where to begin?.......2003-10-07
