Otto Wagner/Gustav Klimt: Duets
ASIN: 0060557273
Release Date: 2003-04-15 |
Book Description
Antoni GaudÍ/Salvador DalÍ, the premiere book in the Duets series, brings together the work of these two artistic geniuses in order to present a rich comparative study. Essentially three volumes in one, a section on each artist presents a brief biography and an examination of some major works, with a third section that compares the images and ideas of the two artists. Although upon first glance one wouldn't think to compare the architectural whimsy of GaudÍ with DalÍ's dark visions, this book illuminates the similarities between them. Both men were great observers of nature, gifted with an uncommon sensitivity, and able to transcend the techniques of their respective disciplines to create unique designs that influenced and changed their fields forever. Antoni GaudÍ/Salvador DalÍ is a book that art and architecture lovers will treasure for years to come.

Great Anniversary Parties.......2001-08-19
If your tired of the same old parties for anniversarys be sure to read this book. I have tried some of the great ideas and had many compliments on the ideas and asked where I came up with the idea.I would highly recommend Robin's books if a person is looking for the unusual and different ideas and needs some help.
An Informative and Delightful Read.......2000-10-22
I was recently faced with the challenge of finding a special way to celebrate my grandparents' fiftieth wedding anniversary, while still honoring their request of no gifts. So, I set out to the Internet and happily discovered Ms.Kring's Happy Anniversary!
I was immediately taken with the effortless and engaging writing and found the book a joy to read. A particularly interesting aspect of the book was the explanations of anniversary traditions and etiquette. Ms. Kring offers the reader numerous creative and charming ideas for planning clever theme parties that are bound to be the backdrop to cherished memories.
Thanks to Happy Anniversary! I was able to give my grandparents a token of my love without cluttering their closets. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a thoughtful, imaginative, and memorable way to celebrate any momentous occasion.
Rekindle that romance in your marriage........2000-02-29
Not only is this book interesting with the history behind each symbolic anniversary gift, but it's like reading a self-help book to rekindle romance between couples. The book actually flows like a novel and lights a little spark to help make thoughts move to excitement and fun instead of just staying in a comfort mode with one's day to day routine. My husband and I went on a cruise 2 years ago and reading the menu for "The Titanic" theme brought back wonderful memories of that very special experience. It's a "must read" for planning special anniversary fun or for interesting and informative pleasure reading.

Book Description
This biography traces the life and works of a remarkable director and actor. During his brief thirteen year career, Guru Dutt replaced the repetitive ingredients of formulaic Hindi cinema with an individual and lyrical vision, playing his screen characters with a sensitivity and compassion that endowed them with a rare depth. The enigmatic, romantic, often tragic undertones of his screen personae became closely associated with his own persona off-screen. Guru Dutt's doomed heroes seemed to tell his own story, from his middle-class origins to his dramatic film career and eventual suicide at thirty-nine. Nasreem Munni Kabir traces the life of this unusual man through accounts of his films and a series of interviews with his family, colleagues, and friends. Several years of painstaking research and conversations with Guru Dutt's associates have yielded a complete and compelling account of this legendary artist.
Customer Reviews:
A Life In Cinema.......2000-02-23
This is a brilliantly written book about remarkable and eccentric character in the Indian films. Guru Dutt was a complex man but a simple soul who was always unhappy with his life. Unlike other filmmakers, Guru Dutt did not copy western filmmakers. You can read this book many times and still not figure out what Guru Dutt wanted in life or what type of person is he. Does any one know what they want in life? Many of his colleagues become emotionally attached to him. That was his legacy.
a very well researched work.......2000-01-02
The author states that she came up with the idea of writing this book while she was working on a documentary on Guru Dutt for Channel 4. Therefore, this book contains rare insights by people who knew Guru Dutt intimately. This is what gives this book its life. And if you haven't watched the 3 part documentary made by the author I strongly recommend it. There you will find Guru Dutt's friend speak about him with emotions, something missing from the book.(January 2000)
The 3 part documentary is now available bundled with a special edition of Guru Dutt's Pyaasa released by Yash Raj Films. (Oct. 2002).
Highly recommended for the romantics of Hindi Cinema.......1999-08-18
This book on Guru Dutt and his films is a rare insight into his life and works. This book soulfully touches the different aspects of his life, the shaping factors, love of the people around him ,the deep spiritual quality and poeticism of his films. It is fitting tribute to Guru Dutt. This is a lovable book can be read again and again. People with whom Guru Dutt worked like Kaifi Azmi ,Raj Khosla and others have so many interesting things to say about the person they loved and respected so much. Guru Dutt and Sahir Ludhiyanwi had some differences after and 'Pyaasa'. The author says that their differences existed only at the superficial level. Their souls merged at a much deeper level in their works How true! In fact when Guru sings 'Yeh Duniya Agar Mil Bhi Jaaaye...' it appears that the persona of Guru Dutt, Sahir has merged into one. It is the cry of the eternal poet . I compliment Nasreen Munni Kabeer for this piece of work. Like Guru Dutt's work, this book is meant to be felt deeply not just read from an intellectual perspective.
You may think, 'Who cares about Indian cinema?'..........1999-04-25
when you read this book you will understand why Indian films, at least those of Guru Dutt, have depth and are capable of moving people. There are few books written about Indian cinema as a whole. This book is different because it relies on first-hand memories of the people who worked with Guru Dutt, people who knew him personally, and people whose lives were transformed by their association with him. This book is worth reading if you're interested in cinema or in India.

The best!.......2006-12-26
This is the most accurate deck that I have ever read from. It is almost always accurate even about things people don't want to believe. This was my first deck and every one I have used since has given less detail. The cards are slightly larger than some of the more recent decks and I really like that. It really sets the tone, as if my hands recognize that these are different. The artwork is really unusual, they look painted, with gold backs. These cards still look beautiful after years of use. Still my favorite after trying many different decks!
Major Addition to any collection!!!.......2005-06-12
This tarot deck is one of the finest in print! It was one of the first packs I began learning from in 1986. It is replete with all the occult trapping and mysterious images one could look for. There is one difference from other tarots of a similar nature-it has this brilliant sense of humor! The tarot is like an oil lamp. It can either light your way, or burn down your house. This particular pack offers the protection of laughter in a reading, which I find so relevant.
The details here are too numerous to mention. One can almost sense the mist rising from the Moon card, or feel the warmth in the Strength card. The Minors are so highly detailed that I am still noticing various flora and fauna. The backs are always important as welll. These are of a gilt goldtone that dont wear away after years of use.
If you are looking to branch out with your mystical dabblings and wish to give your reading new flash, look no further! This is my most recommended pack for beginners and intermediaries alike. Very little nudity, so this would be fine for clients of all ages!
Book Description
In this provocative and instructive book, The Leader's Voice: How your communication can inspire action and get results!, business executives and others can acquire the much-needed skills effective leaders use to manage change in turbulent times.
"To say language is everything to a leader is no understatement. It's a fact," says Tom Peters, America's Number One business guru. Clarke and Crossland, executives at tompeterscompany, show how others can use leadership principles to discover the power in their voice. The authors define the core principles of effective leadership communication. In a volatile business climate like today's, the ability to communicate authentically and powerfully is the crucial leadership competence. Unfortunately, the complexity of the current workplace has muted the voices of many leaders.
Ever wonder how John F. Kennedy, Margaret Thatcher and Martin Luther King, Jr. commanded through communication? Read this book and apply the principles. You'll discover the power in your voice!
The Leader's Voice is backed up by twenty years of communication research. Reviewing over 1,100 examples of leadership communication, and studying the inferences of modern neurological science has led the authors to a simple, stimulating leadership communication model. Leaders, at their best, communicate simultaneously on three channels: Factual, Emotional and Symbolic (FES). Clarke and Crossland demonstrate how FES can be used in public presentations, one-on-one meetings and even via email to enhance a leader's effectiveness and ability to move his or her constituency to greater conviction, consciousness and competence.
Customer Reviews:
Not just management-speak: good, actionable, advice too........2007-01-05
I am generally very wary of spending money on management books. But in this case, my own manager recommended this book to me, and I have since passed that recommendation on to several others.
As with many management texts, much in this book is light-weight common-sense, spiced up with anecdotes - and I resent paying good money for that - but unusually there is some real insight here too.
In particular the authors have done a great job of classifying the various forms of communication that leadership requires, and explain how to balance them.
It is clear throughout the book that leadership communication at it's best is an art, but an art that can be learned. This book will not make you a great leader, but it will certainly help you improve. At the very least, you will be able to avoid sounding like a character from "The Office."
New addition to Top Ten Business Books.......2004-11-20
"The biggest problem with leadership communication is the illusion that is has occurred." and "The cry for more communication is often the symptom of the undiagnosed disease, mistrust. The disease is cured with authentic communication, not more communication." These are two great quotes from this book. A good read. Highly recommended! It has joined my Top Ten Business books list.
Smart Way to Craft More Effective Messages.......2003-07-03
The most effective leadership messages speak to people through three channels -- factual, emotional and symbolic, according to Crossland and Clarke. Their advice to build all three channels into your communication makes great sense. The book offers lots of practical ideas and engaging examples to help you do just that. It's everything I look for in a business book -- a useful concept, hands-on ideas for implementing it, and an accessible presentation. Great info, great value.
Much ado about nothing.......2003-05-04
Seemed very shallow as though it was written for 1 purpose only, to sell. Nothing but a bunch of anecdotal stories that have aleady been recounted over and over again in your standard MBA program with a sampling of Public Speaking 101 class thrown in. Kind of like being invited to dinner, expecting a big t-bone steak and baked potato, and only getting salad. I think the author would approve of that imagery
Dynamic communication.......2003-02-18
"The Leader's Voice" reveals how to change static communication and poor performance into dynamic communication for extraordinary results. A manager speaks to only ensure the job gets done. The leader's voice uses facts, emotions and symbols to motivate and create change. A leader carries out authenticity, and foresight to not only get the job done, but to also promote a willing to go the extra mile. Providing plenty of proven examples from leaders throughout history, with the ABC's of leadership, "The Leader's Voice" equips the reader with the necessary information to remove any obstacles preventing success.
Boyd and Crossland practice what they preach. Their written communication style is direct and to the point, with the determination to make a difference. Using the pictures to stir emotion, the various type fonts to personify symbols and the straight facts from the lives of other leaders immediately captured my attention. They did a fantastic job organizing the material and appealing to my creative core. I would recommend "The Leader's Voice" to anyone attempting to motivate a crowd of one to one hundred and one or more.
Now let me reflect . . .
I used to complain about my mother fixing so much tuna casserole. Her response, "There are alot of starving people in the world. You should be thankful we have food on the table." When my father knew I didn't feel as smart as my sister because of my grades, he would tell me, "You're intelligent. You just need to study a little longer." And when I cried after being hit by a car, my grandmother's words consoled me with, "If God looks over the sparrow, surely he'll take care of you." These voices addressed me with emotion. These voices encouraged me with facts. These voices motivated me with symbols. I now realize these are the voices of the leaders in my life.
