Book Description
Description: Beijing 798 is a study in contrast--one location, two milieu, fifty years apart. Reflecting on art, architecture, and society, the images and texts in this book offer a microcosm of the radical social and cultural changes that have swept through Beijing (and for that matter China) over the last 50 years. East German-designed military factory turned contemporary art and culture center, Beijing 798 is captured in 200 vintage black and white images of the industrial space and its programs at the height of the revolutionary milieu of the 1950s, and also through an equal number of color photographs of a radically different milieu--50 years later in the present. In the contrasting images of the past--model workers, Great Leap Forward parades, East German state visits, Big Character Posters--and today's images--contemporary art exhibitions, rock and roll concerts, artist studios, galleries, and restaurants--this book bears witness to the birth and becoming of China's new society without losing sight of its past. This unique compilation also brings together texts by top writers in the field of art, architecture, and society, as well as two architectural visions for Beijing 798 as seen by the Southern California Institute of Architecture and the School of Architecture within the China Central Academy of Fine Arts.

Evolution of fashion.......2006-05-12
A great book covering from the year 1066 to 1930. Includes patterns for undergarments, outfits and accessories.
Includes hats, caps, and bonnets.
Easy to use, and very informing.
The BEST Costuming Book You'll Ever Own.......2001-02-08
I have been using this book for years to help with designing costumes for various Community Theatres and Madrigal Groups. Though the costumes themselves are English, they give you a wonderful idea of what was popular for the elite from every western country during a wide range of periods. The best part of this book is the fact that you can tell they did their research. From the way people changed their movement, to the undergarments that were needed to support the clothing, to how they were decorated, I could go on for another page. It is the perfect resource for anyone who designs for a living or just for fun.
excellent overview of English court dress evolution.......2000-06-08
In the words of the authors, "Fashion is the translation of the wearer's personality into the language of clothes," and this volume is a comprehensive overview of the changes in the ideal personality as reflected in the dress of English court dressers, interpreted through secondary sources (paintings, prints, carvings, sculptures and manuscript drawings) during the reign of 31 English monarchs. For each of 56 eras in fashion, clear and detailed B/W drawings (by Hill) of male and female adult dress are presented with a thorough overview (by Bucknell) of general characteristics of the fashion including headware, shoes, and undergarments and a summary of trends in decoration, accessories, movement for both genders, padding and restriction, and typical fabrics and colors. For all illustrated outerwear garments, 1/8" scale pattern shapes (by Bucknell) are provided as a base for adaptation for those interested in re=creation, and are simplified and presented without seam allowances or construction notes. No information is given on construction of foundation garments (corsets, hoops, panniers, padding) which are necessary for many of the garments shown. The book is intended to assist theater designers, cutters, illustrators, costume history drudents, and actors in achieving an accurate silhouette for a given period, and I would say it amply fulfills this goal. Some construction suggestions for theater use are included but nothing on the level of a mainstream fashion pattern, so this book should not be a sole resource for an average home sewer contemplating a period halloween costume. Minimal illustration of placement of details such as pleats, pockets, buttonholes or casings. Patterns have no notches or facing pieces, merely reference letters to mark attachment points on complex constructions. No garments beyond English court dress are covered, so don't look here for Chinese Imperial fashion or Eastern European peasant garb. I found "the big pink book" at a Ren Faire vendors' row and have enjoyed the thoughtful consideration of fashions from the past on many occasions, including construction of a 1550's/1560's era court gown for my wedding. It was particularly helpful to examine the outline of pattern shapes for sleeves and skirts that have not been in fashion for centuries, particularly for the very complex shapes such as bustles, layered flounces, intricate pleating, and extensive boning or wiring. As a professional costumer, I would love to see an index added that might allow readers to review what eras were associated with a particular element of fashion (for example: velvety fabrics, circular hoops, false buttonholes, use of bows as decoration, pastel colors, or very restrictive skirts) but this is minor and the book is quite functional sans index. All in all, a fine and indispensable reference in my library.
A valuable, one-of-a kind resource.......2000-01-25
This book was the primary text in a costume history course I took in college, and it still stands out among the many costume books I've since accumulated as one of the most helpful. For those concentrating on a particular period who want to see lots of variations within that period--for example, those who are concerned with the difference between an 1853 sleeve and an 1854 sleeve--this is not for them: it depicts the basic style of each period and in written text describes the popular fabrics, trends, and design variations. As an overview that shows what people were wearing during the reign of every English monarch from 1066 to 1930, it is unsurpassed. Where other costume books tend to be vague and skimpy on pre-16th-century styles, this text clearly indicates what year a style belongs to and does not lump together a few drawings as examples of "medieval dress." The book includes patterns for every major garment pictured, but these, as other reviewers have noted, are not for novices. All in all, this is a wonderful book for a variety of purposes.
Beyond the Basics but Not for a Novice ..........1999-09-14
This book has some FABULOUS ideas and variations, but the patterns are all 1/8th scale and there is NO detail as to what goes with what (directions for sewing) or even suggestions for fabric. For designs and ideas, especially for SCA and Renaissance, its Faboo, but you need to have a background in costuming or at least some serious sewing to make this stuff look good. Definitely requires skills beyond the basics. SIMPLICITY it is not = (

Evolution of Fashion: Pattern and Cut from 1066-1930.......2001-02-24
This book is an excellent aid to stage costume design in that both a picture of the finished design and a basic pattern is provided for each era featured. There is also a detailed description of the fashion of each time, as well as interesting comments on the restrictions each design placed on the wearer. All items of the outfit are addressed including accessories and hairstyles. The fashions are all British with the respective monarch of each period as the header for each page. The drawings are all black and white and the patterns appear a bit compilcated for a beginner to dressmaking. The patterns are mostly at a 1/8:1" scale and supports such as a crinoline design are included rendering the possibility for all patterns to be executed into finish outfits. The book also lists all its source material so further research is possible, if required, into all of the outfits featured. The book fulfils its title in that it provides an overview of the developement of British fashion up to 1930, and is an interesting read at the same time. Its provision of patterns tempts the execution of the garments which include a Henry VIII, Elizabeth I, and Victoria costumes.

Customer Reviews:
A quick, twisted read.......2006-10-02
Not to be confused with Scott McCloud's fantastic Understanding Comics and Reinventing Comics books, this a compilation of the best 24-hour comics done as part of his initial 24 hour comics challenge (in which artists are given 24 hours to create a full 24 page strip).
This is an extremely fast read (I finished it in an hour), it's fun if you like dark and different kind of stuff. Some of the authors have some pretty twisted imaginations.
As comics, they are rough and unpolished. However, if you have an appreciation for the form, they are interesting in the context of the 24-hour challenge.
Disappointing.......2006-03-22
I'm not into comics much nowdays, but I enjoy Scott McCloud's
work, so I thought I'd give the "24 Hour Comics" a try.
I think I expected a larger format ... the art is cramped,
the lettering sometimes hard to read. For my tastes, the
selection includes far too much horror and/or dispair.
All in all, I'm disappointed in it.
Not Bad.......2004-10-18
This isn't bad. After being impressed with "Understanding Comics" and "Comics Re-invented", I wasn't real thrilled with this. Granted, McCloud merely edited this and it IS an interesting genre, but not likely to read any more in this area. Definitely something different.
24 Hour Goodness.......2004-09-22
So here's the challenge (read more about it at 24hourcomics dot com): you have blank pages and nothing prepared; the clock starts; 24 hours later, the clock stops and you have a 24-page comic - scripted, laid out, penciled, inked, and lettered. That's it.
Considering that the average professional comic team takes 320+ hours an average to get that far, it's a hell of challenge. To put in other terms - the challenge is to do 320 hours of work in 7.5% of the time normally needed.
It should be no surprise that the 24 Hour Comics Challenge is the brainchild of Scott McCloud, the author of "Understanding Comics" and "Reinventing Comics." McCloud is clearly a man of ideas, but don't let that fool ya - he is no dusty academic. McCloud has a love for comics, a passion for the stories and the way they're told, and this collection shows it.
McCloud did the first 24 Hour Comic in 1990. In the fourteen years since, he's received thousands upon thousands of pages from others who have taken the challenge. In this collection, McCloud has brought together his nine favorite stories.
The anthology's breadth and variety is phenomenal - from established artists like Steve Bissette to respected author Neil Gaiman to unknown amateur Paul Winkler, the stories here show just what the human imagination is capable of. There's a comic about Zen; the day in the life of a cat; meditations on a Roman emporer; and tragic life which is also bizarrely comical.
Remember - these stories were conceived at the start of each 24 hour period. None of these were outlined and planned before the clock started ticking. These are not "polished" in any sense - these stories were written and drawn in an intense white heat of creativity that had to be sustained through exhaustion, sleep deprivation, and the like. What's amazing is that anything coherent - much less comprehensible and visually appealing and communicative - could be constructed in such a short amount of time. This is the free jazz of comics, and it's way cool stuff.
The 24 Hour Comic has spawned some intersting variants: the 24 Hour Play, the 48 Hour Movie, and the 24 Hour Dot Com. It's also the subject of at least two documentaries (to my knowledge) and become an annual event. Nat Gertler, the publisher of the About Comics line and organizer of the first 24 Hour Comics Day (2004), has just announced the dates for 24 Hour Comics Day 2005. You can find out more details at 24hourcomics dot com.
In the meantime, read the anthologies (there's also a 2004 highlights book) and consider trying the challenge yourself. The only con is that you'll lose a night's sleep. The pros: you'll end up with a comic (or part of one) at the end of the period, and you'll learn something about comics, art, writing, and perhaps yourself in the end. Give it, and the stories, a try. It's worth the effort.

Book Description
Well-known comics creators take comicdom's greatest challenge: to completely write and draw a full 24 page comics story in 24 straight hours. A combination of energetic improvisational effort and a marathon effort, the 24 hour comics challenge is a rite of passage in the comics field. Stories include: The very first 24 hour comic, created by Scott McCloud (Understanding Comics), comicdom's leading theoretician and inventor of the challenge. Instead of doing one 24 page story, former X-Men artist Paul Smith (Leave It to Chance) created six shorter stories totaling 24 pages, including the true tale of his father's capture and rescue during World War II. "Counter" by Mary Jane writer Sean McKeever is a tale of awakening in a slightly different dimension. Dave Sim provides "Bigger, Blacker Kiss," a story created in the midst of his work on the recently completed 300 issue opus Cerebus the Aardvark. Tone Rodriguez, the artist of The Adventures of Snake Plissken, provides an original science fiction action adventure. And more!

Book Description
Over 800 cartoonists worldwide celebrated 24 Hour Comics Day this year, when cartoonists are challenged to try to create 24 pages of comics in 24 straight hours. Nat Gertler, founder of the day, sifted through the hundreds of submitted stories to find 24 gems, in a range of genres including humor, horror, western and autobiography. Some come from well-established comics creators like Zander Cannon (Top Ten, Replacement God) and Ben Avery (Imaginaries, The Hedge Knight), others come from people who have never created a comics story before. And for those who have not noticed the rise of the female cartoonists, half of the stories chosen for the book are from women, whether pros like Lea Hernandez (Hardy Boys, Cathedral Child) and Svetlana Chmakova (creator of Tokyopop's Dramacon) or brand new voices on the comics scene.

24 Hour Comics
ASIN: 0975395807 |
Book Description
Creating a twenty-four page comic book story normally involves months of work. On April 24, 2004 - 24 Hour Comics Day - hundreds of cartoonists each tried to create a complete 24-page comics story in 24 straight hours. Some were sequestered away in their homes, working privately, while others were working in the middle of comic book shops, creating comics as performance art. Some were big-time comics creators, while others were enthusiastic amateurs who hadn't drawn 24 pages of comics before in their life. The founder of 24 Hour Comics Day, Nat Gertler, delves into the results and pulls out twenty interesting examples. These comics show the quality, diversity, energy, and even grace of the 24 hour comic. The 24 hour comic was invented by Scott McCloud, comics' leading theoretician. He created this challenge as a creative exercise for himself and a friend, never dreaming what it would blossom into. Now, with hundreds of cartoonists having taken the challenge and tens of thousands of comic pages having been created, it has become a rite of passage for young creators and a source of rejuvenation for older ones.

Book Description
Why the seventies? This decade produced some of the best and the worst ever in the science fiction genre-but more importantly the seventies supplied the public with entertainment so popular, and so lucrative, that films like Star Wars, Close Encounters, Alien, and Superman set new standards for box-office gross, one after another.
In 1970 only 5 percent of movie rentals were science fiction films-by 1980 more than 35 percent were! An incredible decade...
A reference work filled with wry insight, production anecdotes, guided tours through tortured plots, informed guffaws over actor gaffes, and solid critical information both artistic and technical. Cast and credits listing are given in complete detail for each film.
Customer Reviews:
An entertaining, fact-filled reference.......2002-01-09
Science fiction enthusiast and author Craig Anderson's Science Fiction Films Of The Seventies is an entertaining, fact-filled reference and guide to the science fiction films of the 1970's, an era when only 5% of the box office movies were science fiction. Over forty science fiction movies are each looked at individually, including a synopsis, information about the making of the movie, and thoughtful critical appraisal. a segment of black-and-white photographs lets readers unfamiliar with certain films get a glimpse of what they were like. Science Fiction Films Of The Seventies is a "must" for connoisseurs of such great classic movies as Logan's Run and Soylent Green, as well as film history students with a strong interest in the evolution of silver screen sci-fi!
A must read about Sci-Fi films of the seventies.......2000-12-19
I have heard through the grapevine that this book actually might make it out of print. If it does this is a must book for fans of seventies sci-fi!!
SF Films.......2000-04-21
This is a great look at the best and worst of the Science Fiction films of the 1970's done with insight and humor by someone who obviously loves SF films and knows them well.

Book Description
Imagine: John Lennon, authorized by Yoko Ono and drawn extensively from material in the late Beatle's personal archives, is more than a tribute to his timeless legacy. Rare film footage, photographs, and the words of family and friends--plus a wealth of Lennon's own quintessential wit and candor--paint a uniquely intimate portrait of the man behind the legend. Here is the poignant story of the tough Liverpool kid who conquered the world with his music, from childhood through dank Hamburg and Liverpool clubs to Beatlemania, from global fame and wealth to a never-ending search for fulfillment as an artist and a man. It charts his loves--for his first wife, Cynthia; his sons, Julian and Sean; and his great collaborator Yoko Ono--and his passions, art, music, and above all his work for peace. From Lennon the performer, in spectacular shots by the world's top rock photographers, to Lennon the lover, father, and human being in intimate family photographs (many never-before published), Imagine captures the man who was the touchstone for his generation. Originally published as the companion to a film biography of Lennon, the book is a handsome tribute to his life and art, and will make an elegant gift for Beatles fans and all admirers of John Lennon's music and imagination.

Beautiful Book!.......2001-02-22
All I can say is that this book is the best I've ever owned on any member of the Beatles. Jammed full of pictures and a detailed bio, this book is everything that you need to know about John Lennon's life, work, and social standings. I give it an A++++. Forwarded by Yoko Ono.
A Big, Beautiful Book.......2000-10-16
The perfect coffee-table book for fans of John Lennon and his music. Lots of lovely photos and illustrations, plus commentary from Lennon & those closest to him. Includes a very useful chronology & dscography. Highly recommended, as is the film upon which it is based.
I loved it!.......1999-01-10
This is really a great book. It gave me allot of facts. Not just about the working John but also the person John Lennon. The picuters are big and very well taken. It's pictures we have seen before from the Beatles time. But also pictures from his personal life with his sons and wives. It's a wonderful book and a great tribution to John. I loved it.

Imagine.......2007-07-06
The strength of "Imagine" lies in its clear-eyed depiction of its subject. Gifted and well-intentioned as he was, Lennon was no saint, and at times, misguided if not naïve. Example: John and Yoko taking to bed to protest the Vietnam War makes no more sense now than it did then. Conservative cartoonist Al Capp visits them and calls their action "self-aggrandizing" (don't miss this sequence). In truth, their motives were noble, but their tactics were too bizarre to resonate. Clearly Lennon was still assimilating an unprecedented super-stardom, and coping with the psychic scars of a mother who abandoned him, by letting Yoko infantilize and control him. As John himself wrote, "Whatever gets you through the night..." This revealing documentary is a must-see for any Beatles fan.
al capp's full of crap.......2007-06-30
One thing that stuck in my craw was the 'interview' with Al Capp. I always wonder, how can anyone criticise someone for seeking peace. What sick mind wants to parody an individual using his fame and fortune to try better the world? I usually believe such people have some serious and hidden ill-will towards mankind. With this in mind I did a few minutes Google search on Mr Capp and it didn't take long to find he was shortly after hounded out of his career by numerous allegations of sexual misconduct conducted at the time he was interviewing Lennon. A reprobate like that should not be given the time of day, let alone foul a film of one of the greatest artistic influences of the second half of the last century.
Posthumous rip-off.......2007-05-26
This 2-DVD edition could have easily fitted on 1 DVD. THe material is o.k. albeit a little self-congratulary with the director and producer of the DVD being interviewd on their own DVD. But it is little less than deceit to offer this as a 'double' DVD. Imagine John Lennon ripping you off.
Perfect.......2007-05-18
If anyone is a true Beatles/John Lennon fan, this is a must have. Music is terrific, film clips are amazing!
Imagine (Deluxe Edition) is Wonderful!!.......2007-01-22
I had been looking for this DVD because I had it on an old VHS tape and the sound and picture qualities were very poor. I love all the extras that are on this DVD! I can watch it over and over again and never get bored. I would definitely recommend this DVD to anyone!

i was soooo disapointed in this piece!!! i looove the song imagine, and i have heard many others play this piece. this should not be a level intermediate. it should definately be beginner. it is super easy, and so much more could be given to this piece. this arrangement butchered it.
