    Book Description

In this elegant study of the works of the undeservedly neglected composer Luigi Boccherini, Elisabeth Le Guin uses knowledge gleaned from her own playing of the cello as the keystone of her original approach to the relationship between music and embodiment. In analyzing the striking qualities of Boccherini's music--its virtuosity, repetitiveness, obsessively nuanced dynamics, delicate sonorities, and rich palette of melancholy affects--Le Guin develops a historicized critical method based on the embodied experience of the performer. In the process, she redefines the temperament of the musical Enlightenment as one characterized by urgent, volatile inquiries into the nature of the self. A CD of sound examples, performed by the author and her string quartet, is included with the book.

          Book Description

In this brilliant new cartoon collection, Bruce Eric Kaplan examines the lives and loves of anxious housewives, mournful insects, crabby senior citizens, self-righteous toddlers, bitter sheep, and befuddled businessmen, among others. If you are one of the above, or know anyone who is, or ever hope to be one yourself, this book is for you.

5 out of 5 stars This is a GREAT time!.......2004-04-17

This is a wonderful collection of the popular cartoons from The New Yorker. I have this book in my guest room and it always illicits such enthusiastic responses from my guests. If you're like me and always search for the BEK cartoons first thing when The New Yorker arrives, you will really appreciate this collection.

          5 out of 5 stars Hilarious...........2004-04-12

You can flip to any page and you will get a laugh or a smile from the cleverness of Bruce Eric Kaplan. Some random quotes from the book:
"My name is Brett and I'll be the person you focus all your misplaced anger on for the evening."
          --
"You can't keep comparing yourself to those skinny little aliens you see in movies."
          --
"Don't walk away from me while I'm not paying any attention to you."

3 out of 5 stars An Interesting Collection.......2004-04-07

BEK's cartoons have a distinctive yet austere style. He seems to have put more emphasis on the writing than on the drawing. As Bob Mankoff, the cartoon editor of The New Yorker, of which BEK is a frequent contributor, once wrote: "It's not the ink, it's the think that makes a great cartoon." All in all, I thought it was an interesting collection.

5 out of 5 stars Feeling Bad, Depressed, Lonely, Buy this Book.......2004-04-02

BEK Does It Again. You don't have to wait every week to read his cartoons - It's all here in a fantastic new collection of cartoons. I don't know how he does it. You can keep reading and reading them over and over and laugh each time. When your favorite American Idol contestant gets voted off - pick up this book and it will all be okay.

3 out of 5 stars Fractal Breakfast Cereal.......2003-12-01

While I guess that I like this book, I don't really think that it's up to the lofty standards of 'The Journal of Irreproducible Results' or the latter day 'Annals of Improbable Research'. In this volume there are several wonderful articles such as "Preserving the Grand Canyon: Final Report" in which the author proposes filling the Grand Canyon with Styrofoam peanuts of various types, and "A Decade of Burnt Food" by the founder and curator of the Museum of Burnt Food. Unfortunately, the real gems here are relatively few and far between, and occasion the articles get into heavy-handed political criticism, especially in the Ig Nobel Prizes section, which I found to be inappropriate, irrelevant to science generally, and a put off.

Fundamentally, "The Best of Annals of Improbable Research", with many of the same cast of characters is a by far funnier (and genuinely science driven) book than this one, so for my money, between the two, I would go for "The Best of Annals of Improbable Research" without hesitation. The primary difference between the two is a matter of degree: both show science at its most ludicrous, and both use bizarrely convoluted 'experiments' (actual or imagined) and brazen misinterpretations to make for amusing pseudo-scientific reading. "The Best of Annals of Improbable Research", though, is much more rigorously scientifically based, whereas most of "Sex as a Heap of Malfunctioning Rubble" is mostly simple fiction in scientific garb. Yes, it is still funny, but given the wealth of articles published over the years in 'The Journal of Irreproducible Results' it could have been much, much funnier. I would recommend a subscription to the 'Annals of Improbable Research' magazine or a copy of "The Best of Annals of Improbable Research" instead of this book. Normally I think both AIR and JIR are too short, and I can't get enough. With "Sex as a Heap of Malfunctioning Rubble", I just wanted to get the book over with.

          3 out of 5 stars JIR's been funnier.......2001-10-04

As an avid reader of the "Best of JIR" books for many years, I didn't find this volume nearly as roll-on-the-floor funny as previous volumes. However, there are some real gems in here.

4 out of 5 stars Very funny, but only for the scientifically inclined..........2000-05-16

This book is largely a collection of silly experiments--likethe testing of bricks for infectious diseases, or the reactions ofcats to photographs of men with various styles of beards--written up in the style of a scientific research paper, complete with footnotes. Most of the material is written in a very dry, technical style, which is exactly what makes it so funny--_if_ you're a scientist, or if you've at least been exposed to scientific journals in the past. If you do not fall into this category, you'll be left wondering what could possibly be the least bit funny about this nonsense; so if you're buying this as a gift, choose your recipient very carefully.

If you're interested in this book, you should also have a good look at The Best of Annals of Irreproducible Research; it's a collection of the same sort of material, and I found it to be a bit funnier than this collection. Both are very worthwhile to the right audience.

            Book Description

New in the Newmarket Shooting Script® series, the acclaimed screenplay of the newest film by Academy Award®-nominated director Robert Altman. Set in a magnificent country estate in 1932 Britain, Gosford Park is part comedy of manners and part mystery. The film is a moving portrait of events that bridge generations, class, sex, tragic personal histories—and culminate in a murder. Ultimately revealing the intricate relations of the above and below-stairs worlds with great clarity, Gosford Park illuminates a society and a way of life quickly coming to an end. The book includes the complete screenplay by Julian Fellowes, based upon an idea by Robert Altman and Bob Balaban, an introduction by director Altman, 20 b/w film stills, and the film's complete credits. The outstanding ensemble cast includes Eileen Atkins, Bob Balaban, Alan Bates, Charles Dance, Stephen Fry, Michael Gambon, Richard E. Grant, Tom Hollander, Derek Jacobi, Kelly Macdonald, Helen Mirren, Jeremy Northam, Clive Owen, Ryan Phillippe, Maggie Smith, Geraldine Somerville, Kristin Scott Thomas, Sophie Thompson, Emily Watson, and James Wilby. 20 b/w photographs.

5 out of 5 stars Vintage Altman and a great screenplay.......2002-11-05

If you've seen the Robert Altman film, "Gosford Park," and especially if you're sure you missed something critical but aren't sure just what it was, this is the book for you. Julian Fellowes' brilliant screenplay not only brings into the foreground all the dialogue and physical action that flowed through the film in typical Altman fashion, but it is accompanied by highly illuminating notes and photos identifying all the players and where they fit in the story. I bought it to use as an aid to my second viewing of the film, at home on DVD, but I found it so fascinating and well written that I read it long before the film was released on video. All screenplays should be this good.

            5 out of 5 stars Insightful Reading.......2002-07-20

This script is mesmerizing. The subtleties of the dialogue clearly define the constitution of the characters. It makes the film more enjoyable. I now understand more clearly what the actions on the screen represented and what many of the motivations were. So much went into this story that when you think about it, this was an incredible piece of filmmaking.

Only the hardcore teens and college age bunch will find this interesting. She says in the book that papers and magazines aren't allowed in the house, but in a recent (2007) photo of the inside of one of her homes, we see a framed photo of herself cut from a tabloid!
Simplistic quotes and outright lies like the one above. Can anyone publish a book these days? At least it's a quick read.

Well, I rec'd this book and began reading. I didn't realize the entire book was quotes from the actress herself, which don't get me wrong, being the strong Madonna fan that I am, is great; however I was expecting a little more I think. The pictures are good, but not some of the best pics I've seen her in. So, the pics could have been better and a little more words, maybe not from the actress herself, A nice collector's piece I guess.

one thing about Madonna then as now She has never been lost with words on People,Places,&things. She has always had something to say on everything&everyone.I applaud Her for being Herself no matter what.interesting quotes through the years from her.

                4 out of 5 stars Good.......2000-07-02

This book is interesting to read because you get to see Madonna's commentary on many subjects. She's one of those people that you're never quite sure if she means what she says or if she's just trying to cause a commotion with her words, and in that sense reading Madonna in her own words was an interesting time.

                      2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2006-11-30

There were some kernels of info but not many. It just hits the high points not the details. It's too concerned with profitability issues like being able to pay rent even if you work out of your house (so that if you want to sell the business the buyer would be able to pay rent). I WANT to run it from my house and a bookkeeping business is not a get-rich-quick-and-sell-the-business scheme. It's not concerned enough (much at all?) with how to market the business. The cart is waaay in front of the horse. If I could go back, I would not have bought it.

                      3 out of 5 stars Not What I expected.......2006-09-05

Somewhat disappointed in the book. I was looking for more guidance in starting up a home based bookkeeping service or a smaller service--one with no employees. One of the bullets or selling points on front of book said "Run your own profitable business from home" but the book only dedicated 7-8 pages on this topic. But there was some good advice and items that made you stop and think so it wasn't a total waste.

                      3 out of 5 stars A little disappointed.......2006-07-06

I was alittle disappointed. The author assumes that you're going "gung ho" & opening a bookkeeping business with a location & several employees. I was looking for more information on opening a small in-home business with just me. Of course, there are some good tips that will be helpful someday.
