5 out of 5 stars Love it!.......2006-11-06

I found this book a few years ago in my local library, when I was 13 or 14. It stuck in my mind, and now an Early Childhood Ed. student, it was brought back to me when I was faced with a research assignment. An amazing book - The age of children spanning from 4 - 18, and Art works with a variety of themes and a variety of differences in the children. One of my lecturers commented in a class not involved with my research that she had never seen a book so beautifully put together of children's art. It was definately worth the wait, the price was great, considering it wasn't available in Australia, and the shipping reasonable. It definately helped me, and will continue on to be an amazing coffee table book after my studies!

2 out of 5 stars using children's art to make money.......2001-12-14

Sure the images are quite beautiful and the information is compelling in this book. It would look really great on your coffee table, the color reproductions are excellent. However, selling the art of children with mental illness and trauma and other serious problems does bring up some questions about ethics. And why were not the therapists who gathered the work for these "editors" not given more credit for their contributions (they were only listed in the back, as if they were a sidebar when indeed their efforts made this book happen). It seems that only the authors came out ahead in this endeavor, both through publicity and royalties.
I am wondering if these authors will next be capitalizing on the art of children who witnessed the WTC terrorist attacks. Seems like a logical follow-up to this book, although I hope they have the morals to handle the material in a less sensational, self-serving way.

3 out of 5 stars Could be a coffee table book.......2000-01-22

The images in this book are very moving and the stories are poignant. But the reader is left to wonder-- is it really in the children's best interest to have their stories and images laid out in a coffee table book? Children do not understand informed consent and the use of their images, which are treated for the most part sensitively, so one is left considering the question, how or were their rights addressed in using their artwork in this way? I think this book is worth the purchase, I am, however, wondering what the authors' agenda was in getting it published.

4 out of 5 stars Koplewicz scores again.......1999-11-29

Having scored with his well-presented previous book "It's Nobody's Fault",Dr. Koplewicz, his collegues and a few famous friends are back with a moving and powerful book of art and expression that deserves to be displayed on any coffee table. With thoughtful insight on the topic of mental health coming from notables such as NBC's Katie Couric and Whoopi Goldberg, to the average teenager who has expressed his or her pain and thoughts through art, the book presents their story in a tastefull collection. The meaning behind this book paints a picture that should should not go unnoticed-the treatment of mental health among our youth. Pick up this book for just one moment, and you are sure to be moved.

5 out of 5 stars an amazing book.......1999-11-24

When I first saw Childhood Revealed, I was amazed at the wonderful artwork. But, then I read some of the descriptions with the pieces, realized who had made the art, and was very moved. So many of us take our health for granted - but, even more so, I think we take the mental health of our children for granted. I feel so lucky that my own two children do not suffer like those in the book. But, sharing this book with them created an opportunity to talk about the problems that some children, even their own classmates have. I learned a lot from Dr. Koplewicz's first book, "It's Nobody's Fault." This one helps bring a unique personal insight into the lives of these very special children.

        5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT INFORMATION-FILLED BOOK!!!!!!!.......2007-01-04

This book is fun for children and adults. It gives much much information about caring for hamsters that can really be of use. Take it from me; this book has helped me so much! It talks about your hamster's needs and wants, "do"s and "don't"s, breeding, cage information and much more! This book is highly recommended by me.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent guide for young readers.......2005-06-27

I bought this book for my daughters 9th birthday because we decided to let her get a hamster. The book is very informative, has bright colorful pictures, and simply makes you want to read it! My daughter read the entire book in one setting, as did I. I liked the fact that each chapte focuses on the child reading the book, explaining everything in simple terms and then on the very last page of the chapter there is a just for parents list of everything that was covered in the chapter. I know I learned a few things from reading this book and I'm sure you child will too!

5 out of 5 stars Great info in a "cute" package!.......2004-12-23

When I found a review of this book on hamsterific I thought it was a book about the cartoon Hamtaro, but I was wrong. It's filled with very good hamster information that's easy to read, but still more comprehensive than other hamster books I've read.
Hamtaro is just there as eye-candy.
This book is fantastic, the authors really seem to have a different, more serious perspective on hamster care.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best Hamster Books I ever read.......2004-08-27

I'm huge Hamtaro fan (Anime and Manga). I had been a Hamtaro fan for about a year or more when my best friend decided to get a hamster of her own. I went to a sleepover and had met her new hamster "Harmony" named after Harmony in the 2nd Hamtaro game and future character in the Hamtaro Anime Series. With that her parnets had got her this Hamster Care Book. I only looked at a few pages and I really enjoyed it. A month later, after begging, my mom finally got me a hamster (Who's name is "Bijou"). She didn't get me any books because I had already researched about Hamsters and my brother had one a few years ago (But my brother didn't know how to take care of him). I decided to buy and borrow Hamster Care Books to gether more information about Hamsters. Along one of these books, I finally got the Hamtaro Hamster Care Book and I loved it more then the other books I had collected. My little cousin (Who's 5) who's planning on getting a hamster had looked at the book and understood it right away (Without me explaining any thing). I highly suggest this to any Hamtaro fan, hamster fan, animal fan, or someone who getting a hamster.

5 out of 5 stars Best Hamster Care Guide.......2004-01-23

This is one of the most informative animal care guides I have ever read. It seems simplistic with its big, bright photos and cartoons; but you soon realize that the information is comprehensive and surprisingly in-depth. Yet fun to read! You learn more about the different hamster breeds than most care guides tell you. I was able to pick out the perfect hamster for my 8 yr. old daughter. And now she knows more about hamsters than most other hamster owners thanks to this book! I enjoyed reading it just as much as she did. And found out things I never knew about hamsters - even after owning several of the furry little critters in my life!

You definitely don't have to be a fan of "Hamtaro" to like this book. I highly recommend it to anyone (kids AND adults!) who want to get a pet hamster.

        Book Description

The 50 Year Dash is a wonderful book of reflections on everything that's part of life at fifty: looking at aches and pains as a growth industry, and seeing the constant onslaught of new pain relievers as a new version of the British invasion of rock groups in the 1960s; finding that the world is no longer sufficiently quiet, and that you're the one yelling "Turn that down!"; realizing you're older than James Bond ever was; hearing yourself say, "The fruit plate looks good," and meaning it; understanding that the one thing that seems to be going away from you the fastest is that first-time feeling--first job, first house, first kiss--and knowing that the best thing you can do for yourself is to find ways to keep finding those feelings again and again.

Between now and the year 2014, seventy-seven million American men and women--most of the baby boom generation--will turn fifty. That's about ten thousand birthdays per day. The 50 Year Dash is the perfect book for every single one of them.

Before I sent it to a friend with a rapidly approaching 50th birthday.

But what I did read was exactly what I would expect from Bob Greene -- a variety of well-written, high-quality, witty stories that will be interesting to a broad segment of those approaching their 50th birthday!

A really terrific book, well worth sending to those we love and reading ourselves.

        5 out of 5 stars The Fifty-Year Dash.......2005-07-07

As usual, Greene lived up to his previous books with knowledge and humor. The book was receives in good condition and in a timely manner.

        5 out of 5 stars Straight Talking.......2003-03-07

I found this book's language to be straightforward and from the heart. It's easy reading, sort of like sitting on a couch with the author and simply sharing perceptions. Greene covers everything; he describes fleeting thoughts on the seemingly insignifigant and expands into the depths of intensity. The reader sometimes feels as if he is having a conversation with an old schoolmate. Perfect for anyone who is either approaching their mid life years or already in the midst of them.

        5 out of 5 stars On target!.......1999-07-05

I'm not quite there myself, but having been a Bob Greene fan since 1976's JOHNNY DEADLINE, REPORTER, I felt that I had to buy and read this one in advance of my milestone birthday. As usual, Greene is right on target with his observations.

Introspection is something that many of us avoid, but Greene is right there nudging us to take a look at our innermost feelings and reactions to a variety of different situations. At 47, I've already experienced a good many of them, and I'm grateful to find out in advance about those that may be forthcoming. As usual, Greene's writing style is like a welcome long-distance call from your oldest and best friend--you hang on every word, you anticipate the outcome of a story, and you relish each other's happiness in describing the events of everyday life.

Greene is the heartbeat of us all.

5 out of 5 stars This is the book our parents' generation should have written.......1998-10-27

Bob Greene combines very special abilities: great talent to experience and observe; great talent to convey this acquired information.

This book compares the changes in our bodies when we reach age fifty (mas o menos) with what we felt when we were younger.

The cast of characters is familiar to those who read "Be True to Your School" (an expanded version of his diary in his junior/senior years of high school), and many of his columns through the years. Quite a few of his observations in this book were touched upon in earlier writings, but "Fifty Year Dash" allows him to condense these ideas into one book and be more expansive in his descriptions.

This is a wonderful book, and one which I plan to give as gifts this Christmas.

            Book Description

Almost every day of the year a film festival takes place somewhere in the world--from sub-Saharan Africa to the Land of the Midnight Sun. Sundance to Sarajevo is a tour of the world's film festivals by an insider whose familiarity with the personalities, places, and culture surrounding the cinema makes him uniquely suited to his role. Kenneth Turan, film critic for the Los Angeles Times, writes about the most unusual as well as the most important film festivals, and the cities in which they occur, with an eye toward the larger picture. His lively narrative emphasizes the cultural, political, and sociological aspects of each event as well as the human stories that influence the various and telling ways the film world and the real world intersect.
Of the festivals profiled in detail, Cannes and Sundance are obvious choices as the biggest, brashest, and most influential of the bunch. The others were selected for their ability to open a window onto a wider, more diverse world and cinema's place in it. Sometimes, as with Sarajevo and Havana, film is a vehicle for understanding the international political community's most vexing dilemmas. Sometimes, as with Burkina Faso's FESPACO and Pordenone's Giornate del Cinema Muto, it's a chance to examine the very nature of the cinematic experience. But always the stories in this book show us that film means more and touches deeper chords than anyone might have expected. No other book explores so many different festivals in such detail or provides a context beyond the merely cinematic.

Packed with observations and anecdotes drawn from the experience of authors Ronald Shapiro and Mark Jankowski--partners in a negotiations seminar and consulting firm that counts baseball superstars Cal Ripkin Jr., Brooks Robinson, and Jim Palmer among its clientele--the book shows how to reorient the overall process from an exercise in antagonism to one in which everybody wins (but you win bigger). It is based on "the three Ps," which Shapiro and Jankowski describe as "preparing better than the other side; probing so you know what they want and why; and proposing, ideally without going first and revealing too much." All of the chapters, such as those on handling difficult competitors, bargaining from a position of weakness, eliminating obstacles, and building long-term relationships, are filled with checklists and exercises that help readers absorb the authors' suggestions and turn themselves into better negotiators. --Howard Rothman

Predictably, he and Mark Jankowski have written a compelling book filled with anecdotes and insights. "This book taught me everything I ever wanted to know about negotiation-and I use it everyday." -Kirby Puckett Former All-Star Center Fielder and Executive Vice President, Minnesota Twins

                "Negotiation is not war.

Negotiation is not a science. Negotiation is the commerce of information for ultimate gain." -from The Power of Nice

Though not a science, negotiating is an art, and in this eye-opening new book, a true master shares his secrets and strategies for success. Ron Shapiro is a corporate lawyer, teacher, and, in what is almost a contradiction in terms, one of today's most respected sports agents. He has worked with baseball's biggest names: Cal Ripken, Jr., Kirby Puckett, Brooks Robinson, Dennis Martinez, Jim Palmer, Eddie Murray, and many others. Rising to-and remaining at-the top of a competitive pool filled with smooth-talking, "sleazeball" sharks, he has succeeded by being, of all things, a nice guy. Now, along with his business partner, lawyer, lecturer, and negotiations expert, Mark Jankowski, Shapiro reveals how anyone who sits down to make a deal can get what they want by exercising the surprising "power of nice." Together, Shapiro and Jankowski have shared their negotiation insights with Fortune 500 companies, entrepreneurs, universities, and government agencies.

Though the name of the game in negotiating is to obtain desired results, how you get them is just as important. While many dealmakers play hardball by assuming a winner-take-all, scorched-earth attitude, they do so at the risk of alienating the party opposite them at the negotiating table, thereby losing out on future opportunities. This approach is, as Shapiro and Jankowski tell us, a major strike against effective negotiating, and can-and should-be avoided. By using a kinder, gentler approach that focuses on forming-and keeping-strong business connections, ultimate gain can still be yours: "You can be 'a nice guy' and still get what you're after. In fact, you often get better results, achieve more of your goals, and build longer-term relationships with even greater returns."

Drawing on their vast experience in win-win negotiating, as well as such essentials as managing tough situations, handling difficult negotiators, and unlocking deadlocks, the authors take you, step-by-step, through a systematic approach that, when repeated and mastered, will maximize results. Based on "the three Ps," it consists of: preparing better than the other side; probing so you know what they want and why; and proposing, ideally without going first and revealing too much, but still achieving what you want.

Supported by invaluable "portable" negotiation summaries-so you can take the "power of nice" with you-this is must reading for anyone who has to make a deal, whether it's negotiating with a customer, setting a curfew with a teenager, or getting the last seat on an over-sold airplane.

                5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2007-09-30

I would imagine that since each of us has different personalities and different likes and dislikes that some would be more inclined toward this book than others. Some like Antigues and some modern furniture. Some love good carb snacks and others a great chocolate bar. Our taste vary, but this book is most probably for everyone.

Becuase while we may differ on what color car we want, or or what type of work we do, we all want to win our negotiations, we all want respect first and we all want appreciation. This book teaches the skill of negotiating in a fair way. Fair like it or not means taking a look at the others prespective as much as we hate to do this. (when you are at a ballgame and the umpire makes a call against the home team 50,000 are booing. Can it be that all of the people on the field saw it one way and the home team and home fans another?

Its human nature to want to be right. And human nature to want to be treated fairly. This is a great read. And will produce better results in your negotiations, withhout burning a bridge, becuase that is not a wise way to live.

4 out of 5 stars Great stories, good points, decent layout.......2006-12-19

Becoming a better negotiator is in everyone's best interest so when one of my students recommended Power of Nice, I was pretty excited about ordering it from Amazon and put it in the queue to read. I really enjoyed the stories in this book. Shapiro has been there, done that in some of the biggest and toughest negotiations in the sports world. If you are a baseball fan, it will bring back memories. And I learned more from the stories than anything else.

I have read this book twice, the first time it didn't quite click and I have a theory why. The book's content is pretty good, but the layout is terrible. I just finished reading a book by Addison Wesley press that had at least 4 times the number of facts per page and power of nice and as always the information was laid out professionally; it helps me to absorb the material. There is another thing that is off putting is how the author keeps saying if you follow the principles in this book you'll get better results and more of what you want and similar. Hey, I already bought the book, quite selling. It reminded me of Richard with his Refuse to Lose's 9 principles in Little Miss Sunshine.

Another small problem and then I will start praising the book again. They use a lot of initials, for instance, the three Ps. Everyone who has ever read a business book knows the three Ps are product, price and positioning, but not here. The three Ps in power of nice are prepare, probe and propose.

However, I just came out of a fairly intense negotiation, I had read the entire book once and spent the days before the negotiation preparing. I let the other side propose first, I probed and I proposed. It all worked. So the book was certainly worth the $20.00 I paid for it and much, much more. And I did get better results and more of what I wanted so Shapiro has every write to claim that. I have not read a better book on negotiation, pick it up and deal with the layout already.

5 out of 5 stars Nice Guys can win..........2006-12-02

First of alll, this isn't the usual kind of book I read. I have not read any of the other "self help" authors, but did pick up on a lot of use from the magazines I read. And there are parts that reminded me of Richard Simmons or Oprah. But it didn't bother me so much to get in a little "niceness". It was refreshing to read about how "nice" can work instead of "mean". I have certainly not know anyone to focus on such before. I picked this up since a friend mentioned how much this book helped them be a better person in their professional life. After reading it I think there's a lot to be said about the power of nice. Nice guys can win... ...and you can be a nice guy and be a winner too.

                5 out of 5 stars Awesome!.......2006-11-10

During my training as a physician, contract negotiations discussions were not part of the curriculum. Such discussions with our staff were, in fact, discouraged, since our only focus should be to learn medicine and take care of patients. Unfortunately, the art and science of negotiations does have a substantial impact in the ability of a professional to maximize benefit in his/her carreer.

This book was my first introduction to this subject. It was easy and fun to read.

During my job search as an anesthesiologist, this book armed me with the tools I needed to confidently negotiate the right position and compensation package.

5 out of 5 stars "Play winning ball".......2006-04-27

This is a fun, entertaining, and enlightening read. At the same time, this book provides excellent content in a disciplined presentation that makes it accessible and applicable. So, if, like me, you rolled your eyes at the sight of the title, thinking this book would be just a bunch of fluff, you're in for quite a surprise.

This is a book of great substance that stresses a systematic approach to negotiations that's based on rationality, process, and decisive actions. The authors' emphasis on the need for systematic, behavior-based process is excellent. They underscore this point with a vivid example involving skydiving (pp. 63-66).

The core tenets of the philosophy are the "3 Ps and Big L" (overviewed in Ch. 4, with greater detail in Ch. 5-7):

                * Prepare (Ch. 5)
                * Probe (Ch. 6)
                * Propose (Ch. 7)
                * Listen

The 3 Ps represent the primary areas of the negotiating process; using good listening skills is an overarching principle that's essential throughout the process.

The discussion of how to deal with difficult negotiators is valuable (pp. 171-187). This section focuses on recognizing the emotional bait and teaches you how to avoid falling for trap. Don't take it personally, and don't make it personal. The authors provide concrete examples of typical emotional tactics and how best to respond to them to keep your emotions in check and adhere to the process.

The book concludes with an excellent ten-page section of worksheets that tie it all together (pp. 268-277). These worksheets encompass everything the book covers and serve as a ready-made tool that you can use and reuse in your negotiations.

I highly recommend this book. It's an excellent work that's particularly valuable to those in business. But, because "negotiating" applies to so many other things in life, just about anyone can benefit from its wisdom.
