Higher levels of artistic knowledge.......2003-06-20
Dougs last entry page says it all and you do not want him to end now you want to learn more.
In Dougs writting he is trying to 'teach' the 'reader' to 'think' like an artist. Doug has not only explained the methods and materials easily but has gone beyond the basics. He has shared his 'insights' and 'knowledge' through his life learning journey as an Artist as though you were with him in person.
Reading through the first 34 pages of his book with active mental imagery has been an inner eye ephany that I have never gotten from any other; Art book or magazine, various selective workshops or art classes, color theory course studies, or even through my Associates degree program in Advertising Art and Design.
I came to this Web Site to see if he has written any other books or recently, but this site shows none. I will certainly try and follow any future Artistic publications by "Douglas Purdon".
And I sincerely look forward to working through his 'basic demonstrations' to comprehend even more 'in depth' with my own 'hands on experiences' with his 'reflected insights' and detailed step by step guides. This is a treasured Art Book that I know I will always remember I have on the shelf as the years go by. (And I do have numerous)
This book is comprehensive and clarifying a blessing for any frustrated Artist who wants to design and create, and to know 'HOW' and 'WHY' and understand with simplicity.

Talented artist.......2001-07-30
Doug Purdon is a very talented artist. His paintings look like photographs. He is a landscape painter. In this book he demonstrates alot of rock formations and scenes with water. He's very detailed in his explanations and even tells you what colors he mixed. One page in the book, he goes over all the things you should check for in your painting, which I will really use alot.
I think he used too many rock formations as examples, but this is a good book regardless. He paints incredible skies. You will definately want to try alkyds after you see his water effects. Now, I just wish he had a video.

A good addition to costume collections, but a little disappointing.......2007-01-16
I have wrestled with myself over how to rate this book. I was tempted to give it five stars simply because this is a topic that gets little coverage. I think that the book is not terribly clear on certain important points, and does not make good use of its resources. As an example, there are no references from the text to an illustration, even when they are separated by a number of pages. Further, terms were insufficiently defined. Sometimes de Marly was very careful, explaining for example that at one point, "frock" referred to two very different garments. Unfortunately, terms like dress, skirt and petticoat are ambiguous and have also changed over the centuries, and she is does not make it clear what means by the term. Dresses, for example, can be one or two piece; a skirt can be an independent garment or part of a dress. My dictionary lists 4 separate meanings for petticoat that apply during the time period covered by this book.
While I was reading this, I had in the back of my mind learning something about lower class dress in the sixteenth century. In this area, we have a Renaissance Faire set in the era of Henry VIII. The costumes that are usually recommended, i.e., the skirt with a contrasting, fitted bodice worn over a shift, don't seem to match the few pictures that I have seen. De Marly seems to be saying that while this was the basis of many of the later European peasant costumes, it was not popular in Europe. Having in mind the concrete intention of designing a new costume caused me to carefully attempt to visualize what she was describing, and I was often uncertain as to what the garments would actually be.
De Marly explains that there are three basic groups of lower-class dress: servants, whose costume would be in some measure determined by their employer; people who lived close to a large city, e.g., within a hundred miles of London, who wore used, formerly-fashionable clothing in preference to a distinctive lower class style; and people who fit into neither of these categories. All groups might have distinctive occupational clothing, but it was the third group who had styles more or less independent of upper class fashion. She stresses the importance of the used clothing trade.
Up to 1600, most working people of the third group wore "regular dress" protected by a aprons and frock smocks. Unfortunately, I am uncertain what the women's regular dress was. Was it basically a shift, covered by a long one-piece tunic, similar in general cut to men's tunics? That would be my guess, since even fashionable women for most of the period wore one piece dresses, and a separate fitted bodice would be more difficult to make. Some of the pictures that I have seen elsewhere of 16th century commoners do appear to be wearing a dress that could be two-piece, but of course I don't know the social status of those people. I think this remains a continuing problem with women's costume throughout much of the book. When de Marly tells us that a woman is shown in a bed-jacket and striped skirt, does she mean that the skirt is the visible part of a dress, or an independent garment? Why sometimes "skirt" and sometimes "petticoat". The history of trouser-wearing by women is much clearer. I also thought that the classes could have been better delineated. Obviously, even in the sticks, there had to be people who had new clothing made in the local style for the poorer people to have used clothes to buy.
Despite these frustrations, I did learn a lot from the book, and the descriptions from later times were clearer. I thought that the discussion of men's costume was more successful, i.e., I thought I had a better understanding of what they were wearing throughout the centuries. In the beginning, de Marly had almost no variations to describe and by the end she had more than could possibly be delineated. I would recommend it to anyone interested in lower class dress.
One point for non-British readers. The book of course uses British terms, so one must try to be aware that the terminology may be unexpected. The British vest is the American undershirt, for example.
The reader may wonder how this compares to Margot Lister's Costumes of Everyday Life and Elizabeth Ewing's Everyday Dress, 1650-1900. Both of those differ from this book in that they cover a wider class of people. They include upper class clothing that might be worn on a day-to-day basis, as opposed to high-fashion special occasion clothing. Ewing's book is like de Marly's in consisting of a lot of text paired with contemporary illustrations. It is unlike it in that it covers a shorter time period. Margot Lister's book, while it does have substantive text, consists chiefly of line drawings, and as such, illustrates, rather than describes more types of garments. It stops in 1910, whereas de Marly's book continues until the end of World War II.

Book Description
One of the biggest stars that Hollywood ever produced, Cary Grant was a unique performer with an instantly recognizable persona and an appeal that lasted well beyond his retirement from the screen. Adept at playing both comic and dramatic roles, and as comfortable in a romantic scene as he was with a pratfall, Grant eventually became something of an icon, a romantic idol whom women wanted to love and men wanted to emulate. This bio-bibliography provides an overview of the life and career of this superstar, and, unlike other biographies, it gives as much weight to Grant the star as it does to Grant the private person. The book contains several sections that highlight individual aspects of Grant's life and career. The biographical sections review the personal facts of the actor's life, from his lower-class birth in England to his screen stardom in America, while a chronology presents an overview of the important professional and personal events in his life. Four separate chapters detail Grant's career, providing comprehensive listings of his films, stage appearances, radio and television credits, and recordings. The book concludes with an annotated bibliography of articles published in books and periodicals, as well as a subject index. This work will be a welcome resource for film fans and scholars, and an important reference for courses in film history. It will also be a valuable addition to both public and academic libraries.
Customer Reviews:
THE Cary Grant Reference Book - A Must-Have for Die-Hard Fan.......2002-11-21
The most comprehensive Cary Grant filmography available, including a chapter-long informative biography. From his earliest stage appearances to cameos after he retired, this book lists them, even to include a chronology of the significant events in his life. Stage, film, radio, television, magazines, books, records ... if Cary did it, you'll most likely find it listed.
You'll find info on the casts, dates, studios, directors, crews, plot synopsis, reviews and commentaries on all his films. The commentaries often include information about the making of the film, choice of stars, profitability, working relationships, and events that occurred in Cary's life during the making of the film.
I'd call Buehrer's book my Cary Grant encyclopedia. Probably the book I turn to most often. If you want a comprehensive guide to Cary's work, this is it. You won't find better.
One note: While this book IS the ultimate Cary Grant reference book, it is not a Cary Grant photo book. There are very few photos. If you're looking for a great Cary Grant photo book to drool over, get "Cary Grant: A Life in Pictures" by Jenny Curtis.

Perfect for me and my son. .......2007-05-16
My son has just recently started piano lessons and this book is perfect for him. I love it because it has all the songs from my childhood and it provides a connection between us as he learns to play the piano.
It has no "left-hand bass lines". It's all right hand treble cleft melodies. It does provide chord info so you can improvise a left hand accompaniment. If you are learning your chords.
It includes the lyrics and melody to one of my favorite songs, "I Don't Want to Live on the Moon."
"Well, I'd like to visit the moon
On a rocket ship high in the air
Yes, I'd like to visit the moon
But I don't think I'd like to live there
Though I'd like to look down at the earth from above
I would miss all the places and people I love
So although I might like it for one afternoon
I don't want to live on the moon"
Book Description
Emperors in the Jungle is an exposé of key episodes in the military involvement of the United States in Panama. Investigative journalism at its best, this book reveals how U.S. ideas about taming tropical jungles and people, combined with commercial and military objectives, shaped more than a century of intervention and environmental engineering in a small, strategically located nation. Whether uncovering the U.S. Army’s decades-long program of chemical weapons tests in Panama or recounting the invasion in December 1989 which was the U.S. military’s twentieth intervention in Panama since 1856, John Lindsay-Poland vividly portrays the extent and costs of U.S. involvement.
Analyzing new evidence gathered through interviews, archival research, and Freedom of Information Act requests, Lindsay-Poland discloses the hidden history of U.S.–Panama relations, including the human and environmental toll of the massive canal building project from 1904 to 1914. In stunning detail he describes secret chemical weapons tests—of toxins including nerve agent and Agent Orange—as well as plans developed in the 1960s to use nuclear blasts to create a second canal in Panama.
He chronicles sustained efforts by Panamanians and international environmental groups to hold the United States responsible for the disposal of the tens of thousands of explosives it left undetonated on the land it turned over to Panama in 1999. In the context of a relationship increasingly driven by the U.S. antidrug campaigns, Lindsay-Poland reports on the myriad issues that surrounded Panama’s takeover of the canal in accordance with the 1977 Panama Canal Treaty, and he assesses the future prospects for the Panamanian people, land, and canal area. Bringing to light historical legacies unknown to most U.S. citizens or even to many Panamanians, Emperors in the Jungle is a major contribution toward a new, more open relationship between Panama and the United States.

Informative but too angry.......2005-07-26
Very well researched but the author obviously has a chip on his shoulder. He takes every opportunity to blast the U.S. Government (sometimes rightfully so) but the book would be much more bearable if he would just present the facts without taking every opportunity to play-up how the upper-class Americans oppressed, exploited and took advantage of the lower-class (Indian and African workers). I was looking for a book that presented a comprehensive history but the author is just too angry to be taken seriously.
A Book About Panama with Substance!.......2003-05-19
Lindsay-Poland has written an exceptional book that brings to light fascinating information about US activities and motivations in Panama. Anyone interested in Panama and/or US-Panama relations must read this book. Rather than looking at the isthmus superficially, e.g., focusing on the Noriega crisis or the Canal Treaties, the author takes an historical view of US military interests in Panama and even globally. The book is factual, insightful and enjoyable!

Sales call reluctance is the "social disease of the sales profession." The Psychology of Sales Call Reluctance offers practical, field-tested and well-researched technologies to diagnose and overcome career-limiting emotions that keep talented, capable people from earning what they are worth.
Customer Reviews:
The Psychology of sales call reluctance.......2007-05-07
This is the absolute most worthless book on sales call reluctance I have ever read.
Good Information BUT.......2007-04-11
This is a very good book but it has parts that are in-depth and one can look at in many different ways. You must be willing to read and put into use the information and learn methods to help yourself.
Ridiculous and Insulting.......2006-04-30
I gave this book one star because there is no option for zero stars.
This book is an insult to all sales professionals. The gist of the book is that call reluctance is some type of mental disorder and all salespeople who don't want to cold call have the disorder.
But what really made me want to burn this book is the authors' suggestion that the biggest symptom of this so-called disorder is when salespeople dress very well. Excuse me? I'm sorry but in sales, your appearance counts, and to state that dressing well indicates that a salesperson has a mental disorder is nonsense! Hopkins, Gitomer, and all the great sales authors who have a track record to prove that they walk their talk will tell you to wear great clothes and that your appearance matters.
I'd like to see one of the authors walk into an appointment dressed like a slob, and get the sale.
The sick part of it all is that many sales trainers have sold out and joined the cottage industry of teaching so-called sales reluctance 'cures.' Don't waste your money on this book unless you too want to sell out and preach this garbage and stab your fellow salespeople in the back.
You can sell and self-promote.......2006-03-24
The book is not for the faint-hearted. It is a quality, academic approach to the fears and reasons we have a relunctance to promote ourselves, our business, our product.
The Athena Tech is the best testing instrument around for diagnosing what is going on in our heads to set us up for failure in sales. I give this book to clients. It's great.

Has helped me.......2006-03-08
This book is an interesting look at the salesman's psyche. It gives you the opportunity to figure out which of their categories you fit in and a way to fix your weaknesses. I agree that we are naturally drawn to what comes easy for us. It is harder to work on the weaker areas in your personality.
My sales ratio has improved and I think this book has helped.

Customer Reviews:
Oh my god, this book is dull........2003-02-11
Okay folks. I have a bachelor's degree in Psychology and have been putting it to work as a real estate agent for over three years now. Presumably you are looking at this book because you want to improve your numbers and make more sales.
This is not the book for you. I will say that the science is excellent. It is extremely well researched and documented. The book would stand up well in any scholarly journal.
However, it does not serve to motivate or improve ones ability to make calls. In the business of Sales we are looking for motiviation to get on that phone or in front of that next client. This book attempts to identify why we fear making calls and how to confront that fear. But in its painstaking examination of ones personality type it gets incredibly dull. So achingly dull, in fact, that even those among us most determined to find a reason not to make our calls today become forced to find another call avoiding alternative due to sheer mind numbing boredom.
If you are looking for an excellent way to fall asleep at night buy this book. If, on the other hand, you are looking for a way to make those calls just a little bit easier, go somewhere else. This book will not do it. In this case, naming your fear does not tame it.
A well written and researched book . . ........1999-01-02
This book provides an intriguing analysis of the underlying fears and beliefs that inhibit our ability to positively promote ourselves, thereby limiting our financial success. The discussion throughout the book focuses on the behaviors of sales professionals, yet it has applications to anyone who must initiate contact with others--in a business or social setting. As you read this book, you will more than likely recognize some of your own behaviors and hopefully some ways to improve your ability to accomplish your own personal and financial goals.
