Book Description
The first edition of Connections was chosen by the National Association of Publishers (USA) as the best book in "Mathematics, Chemistry, and Astronomy - Professional and Reference" in 1991. It has been a comprehensive reference in design science, bringing together in a single volume material from the areas of proportion in architecture and design, tilings and patterns, polyhedra, and symmetry. The book presents both theory and practice and has more than 750 illustrations. It is suitable for research in a variety of fields and as an aid to teaching a course in the mathematics of design. It has been influential in stimulating the burgeoning interest in the relationship between mathematics and design. In the second edition there are five new sections, supplementary, as well as a new preface describing the advances in design science since the publication of the first edition.

Product Description
The Wild West provided the setting for some famous battles, but the gunfight at O.K. Corral doesn't hold a candle to the Bone Wars. Following the Civil War, the (Re-)United States turned its attention to the unexplored territories between the Mississippi and the Pacific. The railroads led the way, and to build them we blasted through mountains and leveled valleys and exposed rock that hadn't seen the light of day for millions of years. This is the story of Edward Drinker Cope and Othniel Charles Marsh, two scientists who found and fought for those bones, and the artist Charles R. Knight who almost single-handedly brought dinosaurs back to life for an awestruck public. Guest starring Chief Red Cloud and hundreds of his Indian Braves, the gun-totin' and gamblin' Professor John Bell Hatcher, colossal and stupefying Dinosauria of the New World, and featuring special appearances by The Cardiff Giant, P.T. Barnum, Buffalo Bill Cody, Ulysses S. Grant, Alexander Graham Bell, and a plentiful supporting cast of Rogues and Gallants from the Eastern Scientific Establishment and The Old West, the colorful supporting cast makes for a rich blend of history, adventure, science, and art.

Hoping for more.......2007-01-02
This is a mostly made up version of the famous "Bone Wars" between Marsh and Cope and would have been more interesting if they had stuck to the facts (see "The Gilded Dinosaur" by Mark Jaffe). More art work of the dinosaurs would have been a bonus. One of the few dinosaur books I've given away rather than kept.
Could have been much, much better.......2006-06-09
Ottaviani has good ideas and an interesting narrative sense, and his attempts to bring to popular notice via graphic novels some of the less well-known people in the recent history of science are certainly laudable, but his execution never seems to be up to his intentions. Here he recounts the history of the infamous "Bone Wars" of the late 19th century between rival American paleontologists Othniel Marsh and Edward Drinker Cope, which greatly entertained and greatly annoyed their colleagues (and sold lots of papers for James Gordon Bennett). The competition was virulent, with vituperative personal attacks, "salting" of scientific digs, bribery of workers, spying, and violations of Indian lands. Marsh, the first American professor of paleontology (at Yale), could be brilliant, but also was capable of dynamiting sites to keep other researchers from exploring them. Cope, probably the better scientist of the two, was also brash, melodramatic, and a bit paranoid. Together, the two men gave American paleontology a bad reputation elsewhere in the world that took several generations to undo. Ottaviani's story isn't nearly that clear, however. The book would have benefitted from a "dramatis personae" at the front, to give the reader a sporting chance at following things.
Fun book.......2005-12-13
this is longer than i expected(~165 pgs), but in a good way: perfect for a preteen to get into but not finish in 1 sitting. i love the sepia graphics but just wish there was a fling of color once in a while (its all sepia toned between the colorful covers). overall, very nice.
Believe It Or Not - The Bone Wars.......2005-11-28
In the graphic novel Bone Sharps, Cowboys, and Thunder Lizards, Jim Ottaviani and the folks at G.T. Labs take on E.D. Cope and O.C. Marsh and the Bone War. In the last third of the 1800's, geologists were exploring the West, and two of those geologists, Cope and Marsh, were looking for dinosaur bones. These rivals discovered and named many of the most famous dinosaurs while carrying on the most famous [sometimes violent] feud in geology. Bone Sharps, Cowboys, and Thunder Lizards is a fine book, but didn't impress me to the level that the earlier graphic novels Fallout and Suspended In Language did. I still highly recommend this book to anyone with an interest in history, the old West, dinosaurs, and is willing to give the graphic novel format a try.

This 1983 book is 292 pages long, and it has everything in it that you would want to know about the making of this film. It includes a detailed, diary account of the day-to-day making of "Jedi." It includes actual telex messages (before the email/Internet era) between the filmmakers, set schedules, actual call sheets, and much, much more! This will make any Star Wars fan drool, but it's also for students of the filmmaking process. The sheer detail of the information inside will satisfy even the most demanding Star Wars fan.

Customer Reviews:
A good book, but..........2001-04-04
...it only has one design for each component. We were hoping for a book that had several designs in it (at least for a play yard). The play yard plan included is the one you see on the front of the book. It also includes one plan each for a playhouse, covered sandbox, balance beam, picnic table, and teeter-totter. The book is still VERY helpful on tools needed, wood to choose and other basics, but the materials lists and such won't work if you aren't going to build exactly what's in the book.
Good How-to for Beginner Backyard Builders.......2000-10-21
We were originally interested in this book for an easy, sturdy way to build a seesaw, but the plans for a complete gym set and surrounding equipment were easy to follow, also. The materials list and cutting guides are excellent and we had little to no waste. There were plenty of illustrations and our projects came out super! More advanced builders might find the simplicity tedious and the projects limited, but for a beginner trying to save a few bucks by doing-it-yourself, it was great.
Good in some aspects, but lacking in others........2000-08-02
If you are looking for a book which features plans for multiple types of play yards, then this is not the book for you. The book does have some redeming features, however. The first couple of chapters discuss basics such as useful tools, pros and cons of different materials, and standard safety practices. It was these first few chapters which I found very useful as I began to design a play yard for my children. The rest of the book describes how to build the play yard featured on the book's cover. If you're looking for a solid, fun play yard and don't have creative aspirations of your own, then the featured play yard is, indeed, very functioanl and fun. If, however, you're looking for many different styles and ideas to incorporate into your own design, then look elsewhere. Overall, the book was a good starting point to learn more about what goes into a play yard.
no selection of structures.......2000-06-09
I was very dissapointed with this book. It only has one "master" plan which includes a climbing structure, slide and swingset. The "optional" plans are simply the elimination of one of the master plan segments (e.g. without the swingset). Also, the plan is quite elaborate and expensive to build. It may be good for a church or school, but more than a typical family could undertake or afford.
Highly recommend!.......2000-03-11
My partner and I are beginning to intermediate woodworker/builders. We found this book very informative. It shows very easy to read illustrations for various projects, from fairly simple balance beams and swing set to more complex tower structures. It also has recommendations and modifications for younger and older kids. What I liked about it, as a beginner, is that each project is simply illustrated and diagrammed with a materials list right down to the nuts and bolts! The author also has information and diagrams on how to use the various power equipment needed to perform the work plus a wealth of safety information. If you like the look of handsome, well constructed, wooden play structures this is the book for you.
The only thing it lacks is incorporating recycled materials into the play yard.
Book Description
Playtime never looked so good! This delightful new volume is packed with ideas and how-to instruction for innovative play structures, tree houses, sandboxes, swings, kid-friendly water features, and more. Twenty-four fun-filled projects include ways to involve children in the planning and building process. Shows how to attractively integrate play areas into the overall landscape design with a special section on family gardens. Detailed step-by-step photography and art show how each structure is built. "Quick Ideas" offers ideas for enhancing playtime with props, fun additions, and projects.
Customer Reviews:
must have.......2005-04-20
Book is very informative and give several plans. Also explains how to make your own cargo net (if you can find the materials) and a really cool spider-web climbing net
Book Description
Digital photography is hot, and kids want to get in on the fun. This comprehensive instructional guide, created especially for youngsters, tells them exactly what they need to know to capture those birthday parties, school events, sleepovers, and family vacations. Every important question gets an easy-to-understand answer: What’s a pixel? What is resolution and why does it matter? How can I make computers, scanners, and printers work with my camera? Children will get creative with software that alters and enhances images, and learn new ways to add text, adjust color and brightness, and change a background. Fifteen appealing projects, from turning snapshots into puzzles to crafting unique CD covers, photo magnets, and digital scrapbooks, make this a no-brainer for the budding photographer.
Customer Reviews:
Not for young children........2007-08-14
Although the cover shows a young girl and a young boy on the back cover who appear to be 7-8 yrs old, in my opinion this book is not for 5-8 yr old children. It is too complicated, the computer work, editing, layering, templates, internet, webpages, etc, are more appropriate for 8-12 yr old kids. It should clearly indicate (on the front or back cover) what age child it is for. We bought it for a 6yr old, by the time we hang on to it for 2-3 yrs, digital photo technology, software, will likely have advanced... The book would be good for older kids.
Kids guide to digital photography.......2007-03-16
Wonderful guide for kids, and those of us who are starting with photography. Great descriptions and clear directions.
great book for kids or beginners.......2007-02-07
this book covers the basics. easily written for a kid to understand. my daughter is 11 and that seems about the right level for her. i wish it covered more setting up a good composition. it covers the basics on camera use and scanners and fixing photos after in the computer. i wish photo books would stick to teaching how to take good pictures and not so much on fixing them up in the computer afterwards, but every book seems to spend a lot of time on that. overall, its the best book i could find for a kid. it's written in language that i think they will relate to well.
Wow! What a Great Book!.......2006-07-23
While there may not be a "perfect" guide for digital photography, this one comes as close as I've ever seen.
It covers everything from choosing a camera (and how to get the most out of it) to editing, printing and even using the web.
It even covers areas that many adults seem to have problems with, like the "Reality Check" regarding built in flash.
Focus, composition, exposure and even ISO are all covered. Granted, some subjects are just touched on rather than discussed in depth but remember the intended reader. (In my case, my 12-year old.) If the kid really wants to learn about any given subject there are countless specialized books to be found.
Overall I have to say that I highly recommend this book.
I'd even go so far to say that I would even buy it for an adult, especially one that might be a bit technophobic.

Maybe it's the kid in me, but I loved some of these projects and can easily imagine building bigger versions so that I can play, too! Detailed plans for sturdy and attractive swings, seesaws, climbing frames, playhouses, sand pits, forts and castles, pools, and outdoor furniture are included here, and I wanted to build them all. I bet you will too when you see this book.

Unlike practically every other segment of the modern business world, the corporate-sales department has changed very little from the rigid organizational framework it first attained back in the gray-flannel '60s. But even that bastion of traditional business structure is starting to evolve, as customers at all levels begin to reconsider their expectations, purchasing patterns, and criteria for establishing and maintaining relationships with sales professionals. Rethinking the Sales Force, by Neil Rackham and John De Vincentis, is an innovative attempt to give today's salespeople a push in the right direction before the inevitable sea change now developing totally overtakes them and undermines their potential for future success. Rackham, author of Spin Selling, and De Vincentis, an independent sales and marketing consultant, use leading real-world examples such as Microsoft, IBM, and Charles Schwab to show how the commercial viability of assorted products and services can be dramatically improved by determining the real needs of three different types of buyers--whom they call "intrinsic value customers," "extrinsic value customers," and "strategic value customers"--and then developing the appropriate sales strategies to meet them. --Howard Rothman
Book Description
In today's markets, success no longer depends on communicating the value of products or services. It rests on the crucial ability to create value for customers. Sales forces need to retool current strategies by recognizing the customer's dominant power in today's economy and what that means for those who sell. Capitalizing on research into the practices of cutting edge companies, the authors show how the successful sales force breaks away from traditional thinking and transforms themselves into complex business processes with multiple sales approaches and selling mdoels that meet the demands of today's sophisticated customers.

Customer Reviews:
One of the best.......2007-06-27
As a sales coach, I'm always on the the look out for insight. Rackham's book is a must read for sales managers.
It's a classic ..........2006-11-26
... but getting outdated. Everyone interested in shaping and organizing a sales organizations should read it. Sales professionals should also review it for insight when thinking about segmenting their customers. It was very insightful in its days and is to an extent still today. As with all of these types of books it is ONLY ONE COMPONENT or view of how customer segmentation ans sales force alignment can be successful. SO take it as input, not gospel.
A must if you have anything to so with large sales.......2006-07-19
This book includes key considerations about the nature of large sales and shows, by means of contrasting with smaller sales, the specific requirements for success in this field. By reading this book the reader understands perfectly why extremely successful salespeople of low priced items fail when they are "promoted" to the selling of most prestigious and expensive items. It is a must for anyone in the field or large sales.
A pedantic, tired book from the guru.......2006-07-09
Having grown up on Rackham's sales models, I have huge respect for him and his work. When I was a sales rep at HP in the 1980s, Rackham's book changed my career and life, catapulting me from junior rep to SVP Global Sales (different company now). SPIN Selling is dead on the money in terms of what true sales pro's need to make the big bucks; it's still the best book in its field. I saw this new book from Rackham a month ago (note: it's been out there for 7 or 8 years) and bought it. I was very disappointed. Every great author/guru deserves one pass so I guess this is Rackham's. Rethinking The Sales Force is pedantic and tedious, filled with "consultant-speak" and the tired old models from McKinsey & Co (mgmt consultants) that every sales professional has had to labor through in internal process meetings. The "case studies" are mostly quips and 3 to 5 sentence anecdotes few of which are genuinely interesting or helpful. My real criticism of the book is it takes over 200 pages to say something that deserves one paragraph: some customers want a low-cost product and a low-end relationship, other customers want a more consultative, deeper relationship, and, pretty much, you have to know which is which to be successful. Makes sense. Worth an article in a magazine, but not a whole book. Summary: this is just not a strong sales book. LIke I said though, Rackham is a great figure in the sales field and his ideas have done a lot for me personally. I hope in his next book he shakes off the ennui so apparent in this last one and delves back into the original thinking.
Re-vampled and updated way of looking at your sales force and being customer focused. .......2006-06-27
This book is extremely thought-provoking in how we should focus on our customers and how we need to re-think how we segment our sales force.
Neil Rackham and John DeVincentis make a lot of sense, our customers have changed. Business environments have changed, technology has changed, and the way we approach our customers and sell needs to change.
Value creators, and the customer decides what value means to them, it is our job as sales professionals to find and demonstrate that value.
Love the book, have read it three times and I learn more every time.
