Consuming Bodies explores the themes of sex and consumerism in contemporary Japanese art and how they connect with the wider historical, social and political conditions in Japanese culture. Essays by writers, historians, curators and artists, plus diary extracts of a sex worker, engage with a range of artistic practices, including performance, digital media, painting, sculpture and installation. Together the contributors examine the contradictions and ambivalences embedded in the Japanese experience of modernity, and the effects of commodification on the individual and the nation state. Sex and consumerism in art are inextricably linked to issues of power, gender, class and race, and move beyond the gallery into private and public realms, where the complex relationships surrounding sexuality and commerce are directly encountered in both the fast-changing marketplace and in the dominant ideologies within Japanese society.With over 150 intriguing illustrations, Consuming Bodies provides a wide-ranging perspective on an under-researched area of contemporary Japanese art practice and the critical issues it uncovers.

Never have we known Schultz to be so prescient as he is in this book from the 1960's. As we yearn for a simpler time when security does not mean taking off your shoes in airports, Schultz gives us simple, cogent heart warming snapshots of life from a simpler time as a reminder of what may yet come.

Great skill and style is shown in Todd Shorrs work. Fans of this type of comic book turned serious art will be amazed and pleased at this collection. The book also shows how his style progressed into a look that is very distinct.

If you enjoy Todd's work or lowbrow art in general, this book will be well received. Its 96 pages of full color plates and indepth text are excellently paired; even the layout throughout the entire book added to the experience of the artwork, which is chronologically reviewed in each divided area of style and influence. It gives a first-hand perspective of how much of his artwork came to be, why it is, and what it can become.

Eye Candy for the Cinema Buff!.......2007-04-26
Here is a well-rounded, nicely illustrated guide to classic Hollywood flicks from the '30s to the 1960s. In terms of coverage, there aren't many surprises; all the "usual suspects" are here but as an introduction to some ageless films, it's a nice piece of work.
Author Afton Fraser divides the films into various chapters: Must See, Drama, Suspense, Film Noir, Good Guys & Bad Guys, Comedy, Screen Teams and so on. Each film typically gets two pages of coverage, a mixture of text and four-six photos. Aside from a short plot summary, brief production notes, information on the stars and tidbits on the movie are given. Each section is preceded by a one-two page summary on why Fraser picked the films found in that section.
The book is sub-titled 'A Guide for the Beginner and the Aficionado.' I think it would be most useful for those people wanting to learn about America's rich cinematic history.

This book is amazing! This book is written by Brendan Fraser's (The Mummy) wife. This book has 15 chapters. Some of the chapters are Must See, Drama, Suspense, Comedy, Romance, Tearjerkers, One of a Kind, Musicals, Westerns, and Screenteams. Also on each new chapter she has on the side of the page a list of movie stars' picks of classics. It's their must-see list! This book even has a preface by the "Million Dollar Mermaid" herself, Esther Williams. The book includes a lot of never before seen photos. Another great thing about this book is on each movie, Mrs. Fraser includes info on Oscar awards, gossip, info on the leading stars, quotes, and info on screen teams (it shows info on what other movies the stars did together). This book is great for beginners who want to see old movies or just great as a gift for that special movie lover. Afton Fraser did a great job on this book and I hope she does another one! If you love old movies buy this book!

This is a book for everyone, for those that grew up with the Film Noir and those that would like to discover anew the B&W film era. The photos are beautiful and the information about each film intriguing. I recommend it highly, I will give several as Christmas presents to relatives this year.

This is the best list of "must see" films that I have ever seen. It is written by a movie star's wife, who knows many of the old stars, and provides their favorites lists.

I love the "Bob and Sheri Show", that's why I thought I would love this book by Sheri Lynch. It wasn't as funny as I thought it would be. Yes, some places had me really laughing, but not the whole thing.

This book is funny, warm, insightful and obviously written with love. I've never sat down and "read" a cookbook before. This is more like a page-turner that happens to have interesting recipes mixed in. It's an interesting glimpse into homes, restaurants, cooking school, people's lives, etc. Highly recommended.
Much more than a cookbook.......2004-09-25
I'm trying hard not to write something like "take equal portions of love, wry humor, delightful eccentricity and great writing, mix well, and you have this book." I can't stand that kind of thing. And yet, that's pretty much the story of "Leave Nothing on the Back Burner." From the very first, with Barbara Michelson's description of her "two-trick pony" mother, G.G., you suspect that this isn't an ordinary cookbook. When G.G.'s only recipes are (1.) Scrambled Eggs and (2.) Mueller's Spaghetti with Del Monte Tomato Sauce, and when those recipes are meticulously and charmingly set forth, you know you're in for a treat.
You don't suspect that it's a five-course treat until a little later, when you learn that Ms. Michelson earned a Grande Diplome from the Cordon Bleu in Paris and that she's done just about everything a professional chef can do, from working in top Manhattan restaurants to running a mail-order brownie business. And all along the way she collects friends and their recipes. One of the most charming came through her job as chef in the private dining room of a Manhattan investment banking firm. There are some fancy recipes, then, suddenly, an aside about Joe the security guard. The kitchen would always make Joe a plate of food. In turn, Joe would bring in an offering from home. And so, on page 159, there's "Joe's Wife's Calzone." I found that irresistible.
The most charming parts of all have to be about Cafe Amore, a little place created just for Barbara and her husband Jim by their children to celebrate their anniversaries, etc. Of course, the kids' ambitious recipes are included, with cocktails too.
For me, the mark of success in a life story is my wish to have been there beside the subject, witnessing it all. By the end of this book, I wanted very much to have been beside Ms. Michelson in all those kitchens, meeting all these very original people, sampling all that exciting food. And most importantly, I really want to be invited over for dinner.

Another disappointing job search book.......2006-08-11
I have long been hoping to find the ONE career book that will point me in the write direction of finding the career that I want out of life. I'm coming to believe that these books are mostly a waste of money.
This book contains a personality test that is not unlike any other career assessment test that you can take online, for FREE. It then contains a boat load of charts...50 highest paying jobs for this personality type....50 jobs for this personality type with the highest amount of women/men employed...ect ect. If this sort of thing interests you then by all means this book might be for you.
Most of the book however is a list of different jobs for the different personality types that contains descriptions, experience/education needed, related job, ect but it is all on a VERY BASIC level.
Save your money and speak with a career counsler.
