Superb Book Of Posters By A Top Notch Designer........2000-03-18

This is a beautiful full color collection of 108 posters by one of the masters of contempory poster design. The posters are from 1970-1994 and were designed for a great wide of clients. Goines style is bold with simplified line, color & design with strong influences from the Art Nouve & Art Deco movements. There is really not one bad poster in this collection & anyone interested in great posters & design should grab this one before it goes out of print.

The New Left and Sociology.......2007-06-04

This book takes on the new left and the sociological aspect of U.S. in the 1960's. It reveals a forgotten era of liberalism where the youth culture was pushing the walls to their limits, restraining the right wingers, allowing those not on the fringes of political and criminal elements to live in a land with far more freedom than we experience today. The right was simply inundated in both repressing all the political expression domestically and a failing imperialistic war where persons like Susan Stern and Weathermen and all political activists (John Lennon, Yippies, Panthers) became their main focus.

Now Bill Ayers, Fugitive Days is also excellent in the new left and weatherman politics, Stern goes deeper into cult group dynamics in self criticism sessions, living arrangements, sexual promiscuity, drug use and atmosphere and relative freedom in the streets, along with the many subcultures all clashing together in divisions and unifications against the U.S. war in Vietnam and traditional cultural repressions.

To agree the political ideology against U.S. imperialism is one ideology. To submit to anti-monogamous relationships, cult like criticisms, living arrangements with either right wing anti-pleasure principals or radical left irresponsible drug use and self indulgences to the point of extremism are other frames or reference.

Very admirable person in political values and ability to take actions. But the extremes in actions and irresponsible life style is one of self gratification and live fast die young. As in turned out Susan died (OD) in 1976, two years after this book was written and released.

We desperately need today a youth culture and all working people to push the government to end in its abuse in imperialistic wars and attack on civil liberties, all so without the cult group methods and self destructive elements of the Weatherman and violent extremists. I can't say you can rule out all violence, but I think it can only be effective AFTER the masses are duly politically educated where the small power elite continues to repress despite of.

Difficult but very valuable.......2005-04-18

Susan Stern's account of her time with the Weathermen is raw and rough, and a bit of an emotional process to read. She exposes some of the deeply unpleasant techniques of revolutionary group process that were being experimented with by the group in its formation. It becomes painfully obvious that a group is only as stable as its members, and the potential for a healthy revolutionary mindset is only as great as the mental and emotional health of its leadership. The grueling gut checks, the sometimes forced orgies, the never ending character assassination euphemistically called "criticism/self criticism" leave one taxed just from reading it... I can't imagine what it must have been like to live through it.

All this being said, Stern's desperation to belong, combined with her addictions to sex, drugs, and alcohol, as well as her worship of Weather-idols like Bernardine Dohrn, definitely must be taken into account when judging the veracity of her perceptions. Being clouded by substance abuse and having to deal with the humanity of people one puts up on pedestals is never pleasant, no matter the underlying facts of one's experience.

Still, her experience seems to ring true to a great extent insofar as one can imagine many going through the same emotional experiences.

A useful account of Weatherman from the female perspective.......2004-08-24

Susan Stern's biography provides the reader with a useful and detailed account of the environment and politics of the turn of the decade 1960s for the New Left. It specifically relates to Stern's involvement with Weatherman, later to be known as the Weather Underground, from its roots in SDS in the late sixties through the decision to go underground in December of 1969.

As one would expect from a biography, the emphasis is placed on Stern's perception of the events around her, and precludes use of the book as an academic survey text for that brief period. The text is especially valuable to academics, however, as a woman's perspective on the social functionality of Weatherman and their attitudes towards gender roles and women's rights within the New Left.

For the researcher, the book offers fresh insights into the otherwise relatively hidden world of Weatherman, and has to be considered the best biographical account of its kind, or certainly until the publication of Bill Ayer's 'Fugitive Days' in 2001. Even in its own right, Stern's account makes compelling reading for the transformation of a timid female graduate student into a revolutionary fighter and subsequently, a criminal.

The chapters cover Stern's life from August 1966-June 1972, and make fairly easy referencing despite the lack of an index.

Despite a somewhat bland title and sparse prose, Terrorism in the 20th Century is a virtual who's who of politically motivated mayhem and murder in our times. Author Jay Robert Nash constructs a frightening rogues' gallery of both little-known and infamous criminals, beginning with the assassination of President William McKinley in 1901 and working his way up to the Unabomber and Timothy McVeigh. Nash provides detailed accounts of early labor activism gone awry (witness Harry Orchard and his pre-Unabomber talent for making political enemies explode into small pieces) and, later, pre-Mafia organized criminal factions in the United States like the Black Hand, a band of extortionists that terrorized many large cities while Capone and Dillinger were still in diapers.

Some of Nash's accounts are heartbreaking, such as the story of Leo Frank, a Jewish man railroaded in Atlanta on charges of murder and rape who was later lynched. Others figures are less sympathetic. Groups founded on certain political belief systems, such as Italy's Red Brigade, are revealed as vicious thugs, while still another set of the terrorist caste, like America's first skyjackers, father and son Cody and Leon Bearden, come off as bumbling, but not entirely despicable, stooges. --Tjames Madison

interesting but flawed.......2004-06-08

I saw this book in the bargain bin and it looked entertaining so I thought I would give it a try. Although this book contains plenty of interesting information, there are several annoying flaws. First off, the author has a pretty broad definition of what a terrorist is, including serial killers, organized crime organization, and anti-war demonstrators. Secondly, as silly as this sounds, the author isn't objective enough. This often leads to an unwillingness of the author to explore the motives of these groups, or put their activities or motives in historical context, instead offering opinions and condemnation. The writing style of the book can sometimes be biased and sensationalistic. Finally, the author ends the book by procaming that the greatest terrorist threat of the new millenium will be, not Osama bin Laden, but...Yassir Arafat! On the plus side, this book does have alot of information about many different groups, such as the Industrial Workers of the World, the Mau-Maus, and the German Red Army, and also an interesting timeline of terrorism in the back.

Best Book On Terrorism Ever.......2000-06-08

This book is necessary for anyone who studies terrorism and political extremism. It documents the activities of everyone from the anarchists of the early 20th century, to the KKK, to the left-wing groups in Europe, to radical Islam, to Oklahoma City. It has over 100 pictures and the tales of modern terrorism are exciting to read. Plus, there are also about 100 pages of every single terrorist attack committed in the 20th century from 1900 to 1998. It also has a list of every single terrorist group that has operated during the 20th century and what the motives of those groups are. To sum up this review, this is a great book!

This is a very useful book in many aspects: it's easy to read, interesting to read and it's easy to adopt the learned practices in real, daily situations. This is the best book on negotiation I have ever read. It is filled with practical advice on what to do when you face a tough counterpart. Even if you aren't the type of person who wants to use specific tactics in the "negotiation game" you still need to get this book to make sure you know what to do when certain tactics are used against you! Don't get taken advantage of!

Peter Stark takes common sense and turns it into "common practice." Just knowing a technique is not enough -- you need good examples and you need to learn how to counter tactics when used against you. This is both a good review of negotiation skills, as well as a primer for those who are negotiating for the first time. Check this book out -- your only disappointment will be in not using the suggested strategies.

Best book on negotiation I have ever read!.......2004-12-09

Negotiation is a major part of my day-to-day job and recently I was completely "out negotiated" by the manager of a printing company in our area. It was still a 'win-win' but I conceded more than I needed to without gaining anything in return.

As a result, I thought I better sharpen my skills and bought this book after it was recommended to me.

The ONLY Negotiating Guide You'll Ever Need is great! Not only did I finish it in a single day, but I was amazed that I saw word-for-word several of the tactics that had been used by the printing company manager (and many other decision makers over the last 10 years!).

Next time I will be ready!

Typically you get what you pay for. I have a den full of books that I paid over $50 for that I reference frequently and I have many books that I paid under $20 for that I look at and cringe when I think of the time I wasted reading them. This is an inexpensive book that gives valuable advice and examples that can help improve your negotiation skills immediately. I read it twice and plan on referencing it often. I circulated it to my purchasing department and made them read it (well at least they all claimed they read it).
