Book Description
Original compilation of 41 full-page and 6 half-page drawings — some finished sketches, others studies — depict dancers on stage, in the classroom, and at rehearsals. Customer Reviews:
A must have for Degas fans.......2004-02-23
This book is worth every penny you pay for it, and then some. It gives you a full page of information on Degas at the beginning of the book. Just 1 page. The next 44 pages are his sketches. You get 47 of these, most of them fill the entire page. Each plate is of the highest quality. It's almost as if you're looking directly into Degas' sketchbook. Alot of them even show where he made changes to what he originally drew. Most of them have his notes. Nearly all of them have his signature. Printed under each plate is it's title, size, and year it was drawn. This is, for the most part, the beginning of his wonderful paintings. The sketches from his studies of the dancers.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who even remotely likes Degas, or anyone who likes good art. The sketches are just beautiful, and there isn't a whole lot of history overshadowing the art. This book is just amazing. A must have!

Cute, but no depth.......2006-06-12
This book is a cute read, quick but cute. It's really just filler with a couple of funny ideas along the way. There's not too much depth to it. This idea would be good as a daily comic strip but is too close to a one trick pony to last the length of a graphic novel.
A raucous, exciting, and more than a little satirical graphic novel.......2005-09-11
Cryptozoo Crew, Volume 1 is a raucous, exciting, and more than a little satirical graphic novel following a handsome, brawny, gung-ho cryptozoologist and his stunningly beautiful not to mention ruthlessly resourceful wife. Together their voyages of discovery pit them against chupacabra, cave monkeys, carnivorous plants, skunk apes, yeti, and many more monstrous denizens of terrible jungles in which no man can bear to ask for directions and listen to the answer. Tongue-in-cheek humor, rip-snortin' black-and-white action, and a lighthearted nod to many pulp adventure comics in the past make Cryptozoo Crew, Volume 1 just plain fun cover to cover, and leave the reader hungry for more.

Book Description
This comprehensive analytical study of the Phantom of the Opera proposes answers to the question, "why do we keep needing this story told and retold in the Western world?" by revealing the history of deep cultural tensions that underlie the novel and each of its major adaptations. Using extensive historical and textual evidence and drawing on perspectives from several theories of cultural studies, this book argues that we need this tale told and reconfigured because it provides us ways to both confront and disguise how we have fashioned our senses of identity in the Western middle class. The Phantom of the Opera -in varying ways over time-turns out, like the "Gothic" tradition it extends, to be deeply connected to Western self-fashioning in the face of conflicted attitudes about class, gender, race, religious beliefs, Fruedian psychology, economic and international tensions, and especially the shifting and permeable boundaries between "high" and "low" culture. This book should interest all students of the history of Western culture, Gothic fiction, opera, musical theater, and film.
Customer Reviews:
A very extensive look at the Phantom.......2007-07-30
This is the most extensive, in-depth analysis you can find on the Phantom. It's not just a psychoanalytic reading though, and Dr. Hogle looks at all manifestations of the phantom-but especially the book which started it all. He provides great insights into the underlying meanings of the text and why we are ultimately intrigued by the man who becomes a phantom. He has an interesting theory on how the carnivalesque infects the bourgeois opera, the underlying class struggle within the novel, and the identity formation of various characters. With all the pop culture junk out there, it is very refreshing to have a book I can actually use for research-in fact, I'm almost mad because I want to write an article on Leroux's book but Dr. Hogle has done such a thorough study, I'm beginning to wonder if there's anything left to write about (and of course there is). Very much for those who like literary theory, gothic theory, psychoanalytic readings of literature. And if you're just a die-hard phan it's very well worth your effort to understand what Hogle has to say. If you can get past the academic writing, you'll find some of the most interesting things about the Phantom you didn't know.
OK...for researchers.......2005-10-17
This book is very dry and full of "Freudian" suggestions...but this only stands to reason as the original novel (by Gaston Leroux published in 1911) was written during the height of the Freudian belief system....
I would not discredit this work in any way, other than to say it's not a "leisure read" or a bit of foolish, fluffy "PhanFiction" by any means. Those who wish to try it, do so...but be warned...it's more of a university level text that could very easily be used as an assigned text for psychology majors. It's definitely NOT for the silly "Phantom Phan" sect (and this text is often rejected by them).
Whether you buy into Freud and his ideas or not, remember than Leroux was a child of that era and his original novel often depicts many Freudian undertones.
Not easily accessible.......2002-12-16
Hogle's book is written using dense professorial obsurantism. Readers will need an outstanding education and exceptional literary sensitivity to understand what the good professor is trying to exposit. One professional reviewer stated that the author's approach to his subject was "strenuous and original". I couldn't agree more. "Strenuous" completely describes not only this work but also the process of deciphering what it is that Hogle has to say. While it is an in depth and intensely researched look at the implications of this story for western society throughout the past century, it trades psychological insight into the cultural phenomenon for a more contextual social analysis. The personal psychological impact of the story for readers is something he seems to approach only distantly. Unfortunate, because this would give greater insight into the larger social ramifications. Also, Hogle can be repetitive with themes during the course of his analysis of the subject. I have praise only for his commentary on the original Leroux novel, which is insightful and meaningful. His commentary on the remainder of re-adaptations of the original novel ranges from good to weak. This is nowhere more apparent than in his discussion of what he calls, "the most important... renovelization of the original book" referring to the novel by Susan Kay. Here he attempts to prove, in less than four pages, a thesis that is both absurd and ill supported, despite the importance he himself has attributed to the work. Overall, his book is something that those persons enraptured with the story should avoid and that literary scholars should approach with appropriate discernment.

An Exemplary Biography of a Forgotten American.......2001-09-30
Since his achievements as a music publisher are familiar, may I recall that Don Gillespie's biography is a masterpiece of historical recreation--personal and yet factual, detailed and yet thorough--about an obscure but influential music figure in American music a century ago. For those who don't already know, Ward taught Delius, assigned to manage a plantation in northern Florida, more than he learned at the Leipzig music academy a few years later. One charm of Gillespie's book is incorporating his research efforts into the narrative. Indeed, were I a professor of graduate musicology, this is the sort of book I would give to my best students as an example of how to do uniquely valuable scholarship with otherwise forgotten eminences. The awards this book did not receive upon publication are hereby discredited

Customer Reviews:
An essential entry-level guide to marketing research.......2006-10-15
"If you intend to execute a particular market research project yourself, you will certainly need to read more than this book - for the sake of brevity, this book won't go into a great deal of depth on any single technique, but will merely open the toolbox and explain its contents and application," states author Edward F. McQuarrie, who clearly sums up the purpose of this book in the preface.
This book gives a clear overview of different types of market research (secondary research, customer visits, focus groups, survey research, choice modeling, and experimentation), as well as related topics such as questionnaire design, probability sampling and data analysis. The units end with clear "Do's and Don'ts,' as well as very helpful lists of suggested readings for those interested in learning more about a particular area of research.
While I found this book extremely informative, I personally would have liked a few more examples to clearly illustrate some of the points. In any case, I recommend this book to marketers, who want to learn more about the benefits and limitations of marketing research techniques.
Very Good Entry Level Overview.......2006-03-21
For beginners in marketing research, this book will give you a strong understanding of the basic approaches and the relative values of different strategies.
The best value this book should provide are to people who believe that their business is doing market research by interviewing a few customers or conducting an occasional study. This book will clearly articulate the value and the errors that limited study can offer your business or group.
Especially valuable to Product Managers, Sales People, and their managers.
Marketing.......2005-10-24
Great book for research for the non-marketing professional trying to learn more about those specific skills.
Good, but EXPENSIVE !.......2003-10-23
Well, this book covers all the essentials to conducting marketing research, or at least to understanding how it is conducted! I would have given it a fourth star if the price tag had been lower.
Remarkable and perfectly titled.......2001-09-10
If you're dipping your toes into the waters of market research, you need this book. Its title is perfect: This really *is* a toolbox, written concisely for beginners.
I bought this book when my boss assigned me a market research task that could determine company direction. He gave me the task because of my past work with surveys and usability testing. I wasn't comfortable flying by the seat of my pants on this one -- determining company direction isn't the same as determining what people didn't like about a Help system you created or determining what does and doesn't work well in a computer program's user interface.
So I bought this book, and I'm glad I did. McQuarrie minced no words in explaining what market research is and what market research can and can't do for you. He next helped me determine the real goal for my research, and showed me what market-research tools are best suited for achieving that goal. He even told me what tools *not* to use. He did all this in the first 35 pages. The rest of the book describes the tools in the box. I only read the chapters about the tools relevant to my task. Within two hours, I had learned exactly what I needed to know for success -- no more, and no less.
I especially appreciate McQuarrie's writing style, which Strunk and White would call "vigorous." He packs a lot of information into very few words.
Take note: McQuarrie explains that his book will help you determine what tools you should use and tell you the basics of using the tool. However, he cautions that you should hire specialists to actually use the tools, because there is a lot of specialized knowledge behind successfully using each one. If you're determined to use these tools yourself, McQuarrie tells you what other books to read to get started.
