In 1985, a Chicago hair stylist named John Lanzendorf bought a sculpture of a Tyrannosaurus rex on a whim. Fifteen years later, he had added more than 420 pieces to that initial purchase, assembling a collection that, paleontologist Philip Currie writes, "is the envy of many museums," and that one day doubtless will form the core of a museum collection itself.

Cataloguing only a portion of Lanzendorf's holdings, Dinosaur Imagery joins works by painters, animators, and sculptors, such as John Gurche, Donna Braginetz, and Gary Staab, with extended captions by paleontologists such as Michael Brett-Surman (Smithsonian Institution) and Mark Norell (American Museum of Natural History). The works of art range from the rigorously representational to the occasionally playful (but, fortunately, seldom kitschy), and there are some wonderful finds among them. The texts are revealing; it will come as news to many readers that the ancestor of the aforementioned T. rex may well have sported feathers (its posture, recent anatomical studies suggest, also resembled that of a chicken), that theropods hunted in packs, that sauropods traveled in herds, and that "the extinction of dinosaurs, although scientific dogma for decades, is now recognized as taxonomic illusion."

This well-made book is manna for fans of dinosaurs and dinosauriana, and an ideal gift for budding paleontologists. --Gregory McNamee

Book Description

The art of natural history is often both compelling and emotive, as well as emblematic of society's view of the world. This art reflects the messages that scientists hope to send to a general audience as a part of their effort to influence how public funds are spent in support of science. The art is the medium AND the message. The public fascination over dinosaurs has been fueled by images that eloquently illustrate current scientific theories about dinosaur behavior, physiology, locomotion, and reproduction. The evidence for many of these theories is very good. The art of dinosaur depiction is firmly rooted in the processes of scientific inquiry. Because the paintings and sculptures that illustrate dinosaur science are so powerful, collectors vie for this art paying top dollar to acquire it and display it. One of the largest personal collections is held by John Lanzendorf--over 100 superlative paintings and drawings, 40 significant sculptures (bronze), many other small pieces, drawings, figurines, action figures, and more. Artists represented in this unparalleled collection are the best illustrators, painters, sculptors and movie-magicians.

Key Features

* Contributions from 20 leading paleontologists - each have written a short commentary on a certain piece of art
* Eye-pleasing layout - full pages of art are complemented by an accompanying page of commentary

5 out of 5 stars Dinosaur Imagery:The Science of Lost Worlds and Jurassic Art.......2004-11-12

"Dinosaur Imagery: The Science of Lost Worlds and Jurassic Art" (The Lanzendorf Collection) photographed by Michael Tropea is a wonderful art collection book by John J. Lanzendorf, with the imagery of dinosaurs that are awe inspiring. Small as coffee table books go, but the art contained within its pages is rather breathtaking.

There is statuary, hanging art, and sculpture all depicting dinosaurs of museum quality artwork of different settings. If you like "dino-art" then you'll truly love this book as you get to see just a fraction of the John J. Lanzendorf collection. Lanzendorf has collected "dino-art" for decades and has amassed quite a collection. I've seen part of his collection exhibited at the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago, Illinois on a past visit to the "Windy City" and it is a sight to behold. This book does a good job at depicting the art in a favorable light.

But, if you ever get the chance to visit the Field Museum and they have the Lanzendorf collection on display it is worth taking a look. This book about the Lanzendorf Collection does an honorable job of displaying the art so the masses can see what is in the collection. There are numerous contributors to this book, far to many to mention ing the short review, but all of notarity. The book has four distinct chapters and they are as follows:

Extinct--but not Dinosaurs
"Fearfully Great Lizards" of the Triassic
Jurassic Art
A Creataceous End to and Lost World

There is an excellent epilogue and related references and credits and contact information contained in this book. All in all, I gave this book the full and strong 5 stars that is deserves for depicting excellent art and presentation.

5 out of 5 stars I wish..........2001-11-04

...I had this man's collection! But, short of that impossible dream, this book is the next best thing. John Lanzendorf shares his more than impressive collection of dinosaur art with dinosaur lovers the world over. From some of the better know "paleo-artists" (James Gurney, Mark Hallett) to others I, personally, have only discovered thanks to this edition. It is an interesting expedition to discover the various interpretations of the same dinosaur by different artists; Tyrannosaurus, bulky or lean? Raptors with feathers? Amazing stuff...

5 out of 5 stars The best dinosaur art collection available.......2001-08-16

Well,I did received this book for my birthday, and guess if I was happy! It is probably the best birthday gift I've ever received.
The title sounds exciting and suggestive, and so is the book itself. It features parts of the Lanzendorf Collection, which is the largest dinosaur art collection in the world. This 160-page book features about 20 per cent of the collection, but it is still amazingly much. Of course,it would be impossible to collect all dinosaur art beeing made today, but if anyone did,John Lanzendorf would be the one to do it. His apartment contains only dinosaur collectibles and artwork - no other decorations! That must be a really amazing home to live in!
With this book,I have the option to view some of the work hanging there. Although this book has some pictures of beautifull, triassic dinosaurs and jurassic ones as well,it focuses mainly on the cretaceous period, which is called "A Cretaceous End to A Lost World". And that is may be because most of the really fantastic dinosaurs lived during the mid-late cretaceous. There are a lot of pictures of T-rex,which is particulary my favorite dinosaur, and the most inspiring one in this book. Some of the other amazing dinosaurs featured here are Sinsauropteryx,Carnotaurus,Lambeosaurus, and many more.
It does have some inspiring, peacefull pictures of plant-eaters,although the pictures of theropods are the highlights.
Each artist has their own, unique style. John Sibbick has an immidiate sense of detail, and is one of the best. Luis Rey has a little sense of surrealism in his detailed,a little strange paintings. Mark Hallet has the classical style in dinosaur painting. John Bindon is the master of black/white dinosaur art.
Donna Braginetz always make it feel so real you believe they are really there!
Of course, the bronze sculptures makes a nice addition to the artwork, and they look very real. Must be nice decorations!
Over all,the combination of the artists`s different talents makes this book a wonderfull coffee-table book, and a unique collection of dinosaur art that should be a part of every paleontologist`s or dinosaur maniac`s library. I know it is quite expensive, but believe me,it`s worth every penny you spend on it!It has been very helpfull to me when learning to paint good dinosaurs, and the different talents makes me take little inspiration from every painting in the book.
So,if you like dinosaurs seriously, this is a must-have!No dinosaur artist should be without a copy of this book.

5 out of 5 stars the beauty of paleoart.......2000-11-07

This is one of the finest dino-art books I've come across to date. Johns collection is by far amazingly complete in regard to his T-Rex's. Beatuful work by all the artists and excellent job of collecting them by John. Highly recommend this book for any collector.

5 out of 5 stars A beautiful blend of art and science.......2000-07-29

Dinosaur Imagery: The Science of Lost Worlds and Jurassic Art is as unique as the art collection which it mirrors. Academic Press is to be commended for presenting these images from John Lanzendorf's private collection to an extremely receptive public. This book is a testament to the dynamic beauty of paleo art and sculpture which has allied the dinosaurs of the past with admirers in the present.

The high quality photos of the paintings and sculptures are accompanied by substantial commentary on the subject matter either by the artists or by experts on the particular species. Much more than a coffee table book, it can also be used as a reference book, with the works of the finest paleo artists illustrating the science. The groupings and progression make a visual statement as to why John Lanzendorf continues to acquire these images and Academic Press and the Field Museum of Natural History are successfully displaying the collection.

Dinosaur Imagery also includes contact information (e-mail/web page addresses) for many of the artists and scientists who contributed to the variety and theme of the book, thus linking scientific imagination with the interactive cyber world.

5 out of 5 stars The most recent of the Bulwer-Lytton collections;.......2001-03-20

This is the fifth of, to date, five collections of entries from the annual Bulwer-Lytton fiction contest. This is a contest, named after Sir Edward George Bulwer-Lytton, whose 1830 novel, "Paul Clifford", opened with the instant cliche, "It was a dark and stormy night...". The object of the contest is to write the opening sentence to the worst of all possible novels, generally by using impossibly complex and tangled syntax combined with vermillion-purple prose, guaranteeing that no noun is without more than its share of excessively flamboyant adjectives, no verb without more than its share of ridiculously flamboyant adverbs, and if possible including an incomprehensible or mixed (or incomprehensibly mixed) metaphor.

If you enjoy the language enough to appreciate attempts to pillory those who abuse it, and have a sense of humor such that you find satire to be an appropriate form of pillorying, you will enjoy this book (and any of the others in the series, "It Was A Dark And Stormy Night", "Son Of It Was A Dark And Stormy Night", "It Was A Dark And Stormy Night: The Final Conflict", and "Bride Of Dark And Stormy"). I found this one to be on a par with "Final Conflict", which is to say, better than the original, but not quite as good as "Son Of...". (I've yet to track down a copy of "Bride Of...", so I can't compare this one to that one.)

2 out of 5 stars Great movie, but what sort of example is this for a budding screenwriter?.......2006-12-13

If you look at the first except page, T.S. Eliot's last name is misspelled. Hollywood supposedly demands that every spec script be free of misspelled words and bad grammar, yet I've seen shooting scripts with "He could care less" instead of "He couldn't care less" (not dialogue, mind you) and frequent misspellings. Much like the literary agent industry, professionalism is demanded (agent name, book proposal, nice paper, SASE), but often not reciprocated (e.g., they'll send you a photocopied form letter [Dear Author . . .]).

What we need to see are published versions of original speculation scripts. Shane Black's first release of "Lethal Weapon" would be more beneficial a read than these shooting scripts.

Sorry, got off on a rant. It's not that these shooting scripts aren't worth reading for new screenwriters, but there's a market out there for actual spec script versions. If your spec has as many SUPERs in it as this shooting script, Hollywood might throw your stuff in the bin . . . unless you're established, of course.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent! Like you're watching the movie all over again........2002-04-17

It's a great book. Everything is in exact detail as the movie. As I read, I picture the scene in the movie and I feel like I'm watching the movie all over again. It was written word for word, scene by scene. It even includes still photos and a full cast description of each character. It was everything I thought it would be. It was definitely worth the wait since ordering this book before it was even published.

This book is really useful: I play the medieval lute and the 'ud and I found very interesting and helpful the chapters about improvisation and basic theory of the modes.

        I really recommend it!

I agree with the other review of this book, the
Bagby article is wonderful in its insight and also
its discouraging the adoption of riffs from contemporary
cultures (a la "world music") while finding inspiration and advice in them. Non-western musical traditions have has its own genius and integrity witout insulting them by pasting them onto western practice. They should be studied for their own worth.
The articles about theory and practice in this book are the most practical I've ever seen in a book on the subject. Following Margriet Tindemans' advice in chapter 34 will definitely get you somewhere.
If you are going to buy only one book on the subject it should be this one. If you are going to buy several, this one should be the first.

5 out of 5 stars Sheep guts, neumes, and poetic imagination.......2001-01-05

This collection of essays attempts to give a fairly complete overview of things we need to know to do a credible job of recreating medieval music, including poetic and dramatic forms, modes, tunings, the ever-elusive question of notation, and specifics about the instruments. This last is particularly helpful when one is moving sideways out of one's own area of expertise (eg, singers wanting to know more about how to direct the instrumentalists in suitable accompaniment textures, lutenists seeking to create a repertoire out of 14th and 15th c vocal forms, sensible people curious about the hurdy gurdy's fall from grace, etc.). Within any given essay are plenty of challenges to commonly received knowledge, with abundant references and citations. Illustrations, though sparing, manage to make departures from the ones usually given. In all, this book is bound to serve as a standard reference for years to come.

For a taste now, if nothing else, anyone involved in recreating medieval music simply must read Benjamin Bagby's essay "Imagining the Early Medieval Harp." He presents a quest, and captures many hints to point to a truly passionate and organic reconstruction of authentic performance practice. Why do we go to such efforts to assemble these hints and scraps of the past? Why would we even think of limiting ourselves to musical instruments barely exceeding an octave? Imagine, with Mr Bagby, the legend of Tristan with his 8-10 stringed harp, described in a 13th c account as "playing such sweet tones and striking the harp so perfecly... that many who stood or sat nearby forgot their own names." This is a possible ideal even today: Read on!

Even more is given in the late Barbara Thornton's interview "The Voice," wherein very specific techniques are shared for cultivating a medieval imagination. Like a language itself, this imagination is also a receptivity to many emotional nuances and inflections that are simply not communicated by any other kind of music.

As Ms Thornton reflected, it was just as hard for a medieval person to gain mastery of medieval tradition as it is for us today. "The building blocks in medieval tradition are known and available." You'll find a treasury of them here.

        Book Description

Over the past twenty-five years Europe and North America have witnessed an enormous revival of interest in early music. Since the late 1950s numerous professional and amateur ensembles have delighted audiences with the vocal and instrumental music of the twelffth to the sixteenth centuries, while scholars have addressed themselves to the many problems involved in its authentic re-creation. This book unites the two fields; it is both a summary of the most recent scholarly investigations into the subject and a practical guide to the performance of early music based on the experience of the author and others who have performed a sizable portion of the early repertory.

McGee lays out clearly the foundation and background of each of the performance problems, presenting the most recent research and pointing out areas of incomplete knowledge and controversy, and then introduces practical solutions based on the scholarship.

All the topics necessary for a historical performance of early music are discussed: tempo, rhythmic flow, instrumentation, ornamentation, articulation, improvisation, style, and singing technique, along with some practical hints for selecting a program and shoosing substitute instruments. The final chapters is a reference guide to modern editions of the music and an introduction to the scholarly literature on early music performances.

At the time of publication, this book was the first to address the problem of how to perform medieval and Renaissance music. It is intended for both the amateur performing musician and the serious student.

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great reference for performers.......2001-07-13

Timothy McGee's Performer's Guide was recommended to me by Therese Honey, who performs, records, and teaches medieval harp technique. I am very impressed with it and greatly appreciate her recommendation. This is a practical book, and could be used by someone new to early music as well as someone with a deeper background. A good index makes it possible to pick out sections related to a particular instrument. Good writing by a knowledgeable author makes it enjoyable to read the whole book.

        5 out of 5 stars A Performer's Companion.......2000-06-28

Renaissance music was a key aspect of my high school experience as I sang under the direction of a man who has received his Masters Degree in its components and has a compelling love of its applications. From sacred to secular and serious to silly, Renaissance music covered a breadth of ideas and ideals, many of which modern performers without depth of knowledge or experience cannot relate or understand. This book serves to quell those absences of information on such an important period of musical history. I think of this as a necessary tool for any performer in studying the intricacies of this period's collaborative parts. Notice the title does not mention EXPERIENCED performer's guide to Renaissance music. This is a tool for any musical performer to enhance themsleves as musicians and as people. It is for the layman and the scholar to enjoy, and enjoy they will. Renaissance music established a firm foundation for all modern methods of musical ideology. It is only reasonable to presume that the modern musical mind should want to discover its artistic roots through such a resource as this.

          Book Description

The Classical Sicilian is one of the most popular openings among top-class grandmasters as Black develops in straightforward and logical fashion. Whether White tries an immediate attack or chooses a quieter approach, Black retains the famed Sicilian counter-punch. The Classical is surprisingly neglected in chess literature; Grandmaster Yrjola finally reveals both the theory and concepts behind this well respected opening, making it accessible to players of all levels.

This guide is written by a renowned Classical Sicilian expert, covers all of White's main replies and explains an opening played regularly by Anand, Kramnik and Shirov.

          5 out of 5 stars A good "Easy Guide".......2003-08-04

This is indeed a solid book. It covers the theory very well in a nice way, since he offers explanations after many moves instead of just listing the variations followed by a "with advantage to black".

Regarding all major variations, he presents general themes and plans for both sides. There are many diagrams, and in some cases the positions in the diagrams are closely related which helps you understand the connection between some plans. In my opinion, these are very instructive.

After each variation is covered, he starts a discussion entitled "Which line to choose in the (for example) Sozin)", where he explains firstly his own view and experience and then generally the differences, which line suits the positional player, the aggressive player, the solid player etc. From someone who has tested different lines in various variations and then read his discussion afterwards, I can say that he is right on many points.

Between me and some of my friends, we own all the Easy Guides in the different Sicilian Openings and a few others as well. In my opinion, this one is the best.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Repertoire Book I've Seen.......2002-01-03

Easy Guide to the Classical Sicilian does a good job of balancing the need for general information on an opening, as well as getting into the specifics of each variation. The main strength of this book is that it does not try to take huge shortcuts that would keep you from memorizing a lot of material for the sake of being easier. The main variations are all deeply covered, up to move twenty or so in the h6 Rauzer, which prevents doubled f pawns. Some of his suggestions are not technically the "main line," but they are all lines played by top grandmasters including Shirov, Leko, and Svidler. The variations themselves are easily understandable, even up to an advanced stage. This is because the author does a good job explaining the main ideas before each chapter, so you understand the basic early middlegame plan even if you don't know the exact move at the moment. Another plus is that while it is a repertoire book, there are about 6 different ways you could put the lines together to form a repertoire. For instance, in the Sozin you have both the 5. .. Qb6 line, forcing the knight away, but making the game less concrete, or the dangerous (for both players) early queenside activity lines in the sozin and Velimirovic, as well as the main lines. In the rauzer, you have the plan of h6 to kick out the bishop, or choice of several Bd7 lines, with doubled F pawns. This also isn't a book that tells you that everything you play will be able to counter white, in fact in some places the author tells you that at this point black doesn't have a foolproof answer, but it's going to be that way with every line. If you're not yet facing the open Sicilian much, concentrate on the Anti Siclilians, but if you are facing the open more and more, this is the book for you.

5 out of 5 stars Know thy ennemy like thyself........2001-08-19

As a club player, I am often confronted to Sicilian players. I bought this book to find out what I was supposed to play againt the Sicilian. "Easy guide to the Classical Sicilian" not only shows the main variations on many positions types but more importantly it explains the plans behind these positions (the whats and the whys). For each position-type, Jouni Yrjola present, in an easy to understand way, half a dozen or so "Typical methods for White" and "Typical methods for Black". So this book tricked me, in addition to show me how to play againt Sicilian players, it taught how to become one of them!
