ART AND ARCHITECTURE OF PASSION BY GIDDINGS.......2003-03-29
The most wonderful book full of breath-taking pictures. Designs are Tropical and colorful. I recommend this book to anyone liking tropical themes and decorating.
Book Description
In this book Francesca Alfano Miglietti offers a collection of everything that has created scandal, enthusiasm, excitement and a sense of participation in fashion, and examines the construction and de-construction of our bodies and our identities, beginning with what we wear and the relationship our clothes have with all that is contemporary. In 44 interviews, previously published in the Italian art magazine Virus, designers and photographers define their concept of fashion. The simple yet extravagant style of Ann Demeulemeester, the multiethnic contaminations of Romeo Gigli, the nihilist and aggressive look of Alexander McQueen, the erotic and ironic play of Anna Molinari, the irreverence and unpredictability of Jean-Paul Gaultier, the audacity of the queen of fashion Vivienne Westwood, and more are discussed and illustrated in this highly-readable and visually delightful book.
Book Description
Encolpius, a soldier of fortune, despiser of pedantry, lecherous and contrary, and the beautiful Giton, who lives off his charms, are invited to a gargantuan banquet hosted by the prodigal, pompous, newly rich Trimalchio. When the feast turns into a riot, the two, joined by the down-on-his-luck poet Eumolpus, leave town quickly to avoid trouble. So begins the Satyrica, a bizarre odyssey through the carnivalesque landscape of Nero's empire.
The author of the Satyrica, Petronius, had been Nero's intimate and advisor on all matters of artistic taste and elegance but a jealous rival turned Nero against him. No longer enduring "the suspense of fear or of hope," Petronius eluded his former patron by ending his own life. His novel has lived on, preserving for centuries tales of a time when virtue and vice, power and money, human comedy and human cruelty, mixed and melded unpredictably.
The translation is accurate and contemporary. In addition, a chronology, introduction, and commentary offer the reader background on Petronius's social milieu and on the fascinating complexity of his seemingly low-brow novel's poetic structure.

Intelligent, elegant, ironic, poetic..........2002-03-28
At present on Amazon.com, there are 3 different
editions of the SATYRICON offered. They are all
excellent...I own all 3. And if permitted, I plan
to review each of the three individually. This
edition is hard to find, because of its title.
Amazon has indexed it by its title -- SATYRICA -
and thus, it does not come up on searches for
"Petronius" or "Satyricon." Which is unfortunate,
because it is probably the best of the 3 editions,
with all of its extras.
There have been many writers who have been influenced
by having read Petronius and the SATYRICON (or SATYRICA).
Some of these writers have even gone so far as to offer
their opinions about Petronius or about the SATYRICON
itself. One of the excellent features of this edition
of the SATYRICON (published by Univ. of California Press),
translated and with an "Introduction" by R. Bracht Branham
and Daniel Kinney, is the fact that in the back of the
book they include a section titled "Petronius and his
Critics." In this section, they give provocative quotes
by authors starting with John of Salisbury (12th century)
and extending up through T.S. Eliot in 1932. What they
may not have known is that Herman Melville also has
a short piece about Petronius in his novel REDBURN,
Chap. 56, in which the narrator of the novel talks about
the hands of his friend Harry Bolton and says: "It was
not as the sturdy farmer's hand of a Cincinnatus, who
followed the plough and guided the state, but it was
the perfumed hand of Petronius Arbiter, that elegant
young buck of a Roman, who once cut great Seneca dead
in the forum."
The SATYRICA (or SATYRICON) contains materials which
might be considered salacious. So that warning should be
noted. Defenders of Petronius and the SATYRICON are wont
to point out that he does not seem to be presenting the
material as if he is trying to appeal to the prurient
interests of his readers, but that he is rather simply
saying "that's the kind of world that's out there, folks."
Some critics have said that Petronius is really being
an ironic satirist and is rubbing Rome's nose in its own
decadence and saying, "Look what you 'noble Romans' have
become." I would like to think that this last is the
case. He is no prude...no Puritan...but an intelligent,
elegant, ironic, poetic satirist of Rome's lifestyles
of the "wannabe" wealthy and powerful. He holds up a
wonderful satirical mirror for them to see themselves --
as only a sharp, clever, intelligent artist might
paint their portraits.
But the best "review" of Petronius among the critics
at the back of this book is that by the author J. K.
Huysmans in his work AGAINST NATURE (1884). I would
like to quote part of it as the conclusion of this
review:
"Petronius was a shrewd observer, a delicate analyst,
a marvellous painter; dispassionately, with an entire
lack of prejudice or animosity, he described the everyday
life of Rome, recording the manners and morals of his
time in the lively little chapters of the SATYRICON. Noting
what he saw as he saw it, he set forth the day-to-day
existence of the common people, with all its minor events,
its bestial incidents, its obscene antics.
* * * All this is told with extraordinary vigour and
precise colouring, in a style that makes free of every
dialect, that borrows expressions from all the languages
imported into Rome, that extends the frontiers and breaks
the fetters of the so-called Golden Age, that makes every
man talk in his own idiom .... There are lightning sketches
of all these people, sprawled round a table, exchanging the
vapid pleasantries of drunken revellers, trotting out
mawkish maxims and stupid saws, their heads turned towards
Trimalchio, who sits picking his teeth, offers the company
chamber pots, discourses on the state of his bowels,
f**ts to prove his point, and begs his guests to make
themselves at home." [asterisk "censoring" is mine]
(pp. 176-177)
Amazing insight, excellent writing, excellent book --
I will heartily recommend these qualities in this version
of the SATYRICON, and you will have to decide
for yourself whether you wish to peruse Huysmans,
or not.

Book Description
This volume explores the literary representation of male sexual dysfunction and discusses the natural and supernatural elements of an ancient folk medical system based on conceptual associations between male sexuality and specific plants, animals and minerals. The work incorporates material from both literary and scientific sources to draw parallels between ancient and modern paradigms of healing. The literary depiction of attempts to remedy impotence demonstrates how an accessibility to cures contributes to the sexual and social reintegration of the sufferer. The Satyrica of Petronius echoes this process by means of the text itself and so effects similar ends. The book provides new insights into literature and the ancient belief systems underlying it with its original and integrative approach to disciplines such as philology, botany, mineralogy, zoology and medicine.

Book Description
The Satyrica of Petronius, one of the fictional key texts in ancient literature, have been the focus of international research since the 1960s. It is all the more surprising, therefore, that modern commentators have only concentrated on the central part of the work, the famous Cena Trimalchionis. This defect is now remedied with Habermehl's commentary on the especially neglected second half of the work (a second volume, on Sat. 111'141, is scheduled to follow in about two years' time). The commentary provides the reader with all the necessary apparatus for understanding the language, the factual elements and the action of the text. In addition, it includes critical discussion of the novel as an exemplar, and thus renders a contribution of fundamental importance to the interpretation of the Satyrica in their entirety, which are still the subject of much controversy.

Gary Cooper off Camera is a tribute to a Hollywood star that manages to be sentimental, glossy, and passionate all at the same time. A fond introduction by Tom Hanks opens the book, but its multifaceted pleasures spring from the love of author Maria Cooper Janis, who clearly felt it was a unique and great privilege to be the daughter of Gary Cooper. Janis's writing--from the loving letter to her father's ghost to the text that accompanies the many photographs--is charged with filial warmth.
Though the book offers many glimpses of Cooper on the set, it also sheds light on sides of the actor that never appeared on screen: the family man, the sportsman, the host and guest who opened his affections to many Hollywood luminaries. It is these photographs that really make the book a delight. The camera has loved very few men as much as it did Cooper, and this collection captures the ease and joy of an American icon who in films often played awkward and alienated figures. Page after page of extraordinary black-and-white shots reveal the warm relationships Cooper had with his family, and with friends like Pablo Picasso, Ernest Hemingway, and Jimmy Stewart. This volume offers a tender view into a rare and fading kind of celebrity life, one that appears to have been somehow both glamorous and private. --Raphael Shargel
Customer Reviews:
GARY COOPER FANS...ATTENTION!!.......2005-09-24
This is a great book for initial insight into Gary Cooper by his daughter. It is very obvious she adored her father. The book is very informative about the personal life of "Coope" with many wonderful pictures, however, the book is more images than writing. The details are only touched on. If you are a Gary Cooper & you want many unseen pictures, this is the book for you...
Daddy's Girl .......2004-09-15
The cover photograph, of Gary Cooper spoon-feeding ice-cream to his daughter on the streets of "Hadleyville," is a poignant clue to what follows. Maria Cooper was a girl who lived a very rarified life, and she lets us take a delicious peek at it.
Beautiful Pictures Captures Public Image.......2004-04-03
Well, let me start with what beautiful tribute this book is to her father. Maria Cooper's book is beautiful, but too many of the pictures look posed (Hollywood style). And the pictures that are actually not posed say more in body language about a family that clearly protects the Cooper family image. These people are beautiful, but they are too perfect: clothes, hair, makeup, you know it's all there. One picture I found fascinating, is of the three of them on a beach facing the ocean. Maria and her mom on the left, and further away is Gary Cooper and his body language is quite clear. Hmmm, that definitely was a candid shot. And if anyone is really looking, the beautiful Maria seems to be the glue that kept that family together. There is a gorgeous shot of the three of them in their ski clothes in an old house. Rocky with little makeup is quite beautiful, but Maria and her Dad are the ones in sync in this picture. I don't know, but these pictures show a definite strain in the family relationship far more than I ever realized. With friends, the pictures are happier. I am a fan of Gary Cooper's and always will be. And the fact, that he adored his beloved daughter and she adored him is clearly seen in this book. Maria Cooper shows us a Gary Cooper I have already seen in other pictures other people have taken of him. There really isn't a lot of hugging, and touching, and birthday parties, water fights, and family occasions, events, like most people and other stars have of their lives while children are growing up. I would love to have seen a picture of Mr. Cooper in his overalls in his garden (he was an avid gardener), teaching Maria to do things, showing her how to ride a horse, acting goofy.. Maria Cooper is quite lovely, and this book is wonderful to look at, but I don't really feel anything but a little sadness that she didn't show us more candid and "real" photographs about of her Dad and the family. There was a great deal more to this man than meets the eye. I didn't get too much of a glimpse into that.
Gary Cooper Off Camera.......2001-07-14
In a day and age when the children of "the stars" write the most deplorable books about their parents, this book is a wonderfully tender tribute to a true hero. Absolutely refreshing.
An Appealing Memoir.......1999-11-06
Smack in the middle of these cynical, jaded times comes this warm and appealing memoir by Maria Cooer Janis of her father, acting legend Gary Cooper. How wonderful! Maria Cooper Janis's open love for her father is there for all to see on every page. This alone makes the book worth owning. We've come to expect the negative, the cynical, in books of this type. But Ms. Janis has put together an extened love letter to her father and mother. And good for her!

Book Description
Albert Schweitzer, the philosopher, theologian, physician, biographer of J. S. Bach and musician, and Alice Ehlers, the harpsichordist and great Bach interpreter, met as musicians. This book makes available for the first time a selection of letters these two great personalities exchanged between the years of 1928 and 1965. Although music is the main subject of these letters during the early period of their relationship, the letters increasingly deal with their personal and professional lives. Later letters reveal the help Ehlers rendered Schweitzer's hospital through benefit concerts, Schweitzer's concern for the future of his hospital, and his happiness with the growing world-wide acceptance of his ethical ideas. Schweitzer's last letter was written only months before his death.

Customer Reviews:
Perfect book to know wonderful world of string games ( not only for beginners).......2007-01-09
This is really wonderful book. This is my second acquaintance with string figures. First meeting with string figures was about 10 years ago (i accidentally found two simple figures in one science magazine), and now i decided to know more about string games. Together with my 8 year old son we tried to learn more string figures, and we succeeded with it so easy. This book is perfect not only for beginners, but for advanced users too. Figures are explained clearly, and as simple as possible to do it with so complex thing as string figures.
A reasonably good book.......2004-07-16
This book has a nice variety of figures in a good range of difficulties. The illustrations are generally quite clear. The written directions, while acceptable, are not as clear as in some other string figure books I've used. My major problem with the book is that the authors did not see fit to include written directions for some of the later figures, and they needed it. The pictures are clear when backing up the words, but cannot stand alone nearly as well. Aside from this, I liked the book.
Getting started with String games and designs.......2001-06-13
This book has unique designs to create and explains each movemnt step by step. The designs are creative and will keep anyone entertained for long periods of time as they try to master these string games. The only problem I found was that the various designs required different lengths of string. I ended up making my own string lengths and they work out just fine.
A wonderful assortment of unusual string figures.......2000-10-18
This book, a compilation of string figures previously published in the String Figure magazine, presents the string figure enthusiast with many figures that have generally not been in other more popular publications. The directions are very clear, and information on the source as well as interesting anecdotes are included for many. The reader will have their fingers in knots of many designs at a bargain price. Highly recommended!
A WONDERFUL BOOK.......2000-05-13
This book have 23 STRING FIGURES. You won't find here what you know already. This book is a compilation of six String Figure Magazine issues. There are three string figures invented : "Wheelbarrow" by Carey C.K. Smith (New Zelande); "Spectacles for your nose" by Udo Engelhardt (Germany); "Andromeda Galaxy" by Felix Paturi (Germany). The others figures are: Night, Twinkling star, Seven Diamonds, Polar Bear, Fox and Whale, Turtle (a modern figure), Baby being born, Cobweb, Catching a Cockroach (a trick), Hammock, Two eyes, Little girl with pigtails, Sandsnipe, Sun, Toad and a man, Swan, dog with large ears, Erupting volcano, Sewing machine and Two islands joined by a log. There are over 500 drawings. These strings figures are some easy, some difficult. All are very interesting and the explanations are excellents.

An in-depth look at the trading system that anyone can use
The Logical Trader presents a highly effective, yet simple trading methodology that any trader anywhere can use to trade almost anything. The "ACD Method" developed and refined by Mark Fisher after many years of successful trading, provides price points at which to buy and sell as determined by the opening range of virtually any stock or commodity. This comprehensive guide details a widely used system that is profitably implemented by many computer and floor traders at major New York exchanges. The author's highly accessible teaching style provides readers of The Logical Trader with a full examination of the theory behind the ACD Method and the examples and real-world trading stories involving it.
Mark B. Fisher (New York, NY), an independent trader, is founder of MBF Clearing Corp., the largest clearing firm on the NYMEX. Founded in 1988, MBF Clearing has grown from handling under one percent of the volume on the NYMEX to nearly twenty percent of the trades today. A 1982 summa cum laude graduate from the Wharton School of Business, University of Pennsylvania, Fisher also received his master's degree in finance and accounting from Wharton.
New technology and the advent of around the clock trading have opened the floodgates to both foreign and domestic markets. Traders need the wisdom of industry veterans and the vision of innovators in today's volatile financial marketplace. The Wiley Trading series features books by traders who have survived the market's ever changing temperament and have prospered-some by reinventing systems, others by getting back to basics. Whether a novice trader, professional or somewhere in-between, these books will provide the advice and strategies needed to prosper today and well into the future.
Customer Reviews:
Good, but not great, A and C formula revealed.......2007-07-21
I will spare you from a synopsis of this book and get straight to the pros and cons of what this book is about. First of all, I want to say that I adopted the ACD method and am having some great success with it. This does not mean you will though. I have read many books on systems and have only really felt connected with this system. If your looking for others books
on par or above this check out Carter's "Mastering the Trade," Douglas' "Disciplined Trader" and "Trading in the Zone."
Pros:
-The thing that is really great about Fisher's system is that it is very flexible. It is not for novices though. It is not a black box system, it is simply a loose structure that (after mastering) gives more freedom with trading.
-It can be applied to any trading entity. This point really cannot be pushed enough. A lot of traders do not understand how important this fact is. The ability to apply a Good C Up Through Pivot (What Fisher claims is a high probability trade) to ANY entity in trading will have you trading better opportunities more often, unlike, say, Carter's TICK fading system that can only be applied to the main Eminis.
-The choice is in your hands. This is not a system that overrides your pyschology in an attempt to dampen your natural reactions to market events. All too often we are told that we need to eliminate fear and greed from the equation, but in reality, suppression of these emotions can create sub par results. It is only after accepting and working with your own unique psychology that you can maximize your trading (see "The Disciplined Trader").
-You get to pick the other indicators. For example, you really only need to nab the opening range and the A values to create your own system. Instead of C values and his pivots, you could use the daily pivots like r1 r2 s1 s2, etc. Or support and resistances from other sources, or even stochastics, MACD, or anything else really that is to your taste.
-The ease with which a day trade can become a swing trade or vice versa. Because of the flexibility in this system, and the rules he lays out, it is easy to see when to take a day trade over night and when to sell it, all based on the probabilities that that day presents. This system is VERY good at showing you when you can press your bets and when you can test the waters, all with the probabilities ON YOUR SIDE.
Cons
-I think the major con that most people complain about is the fact that Fisher does not provide the ways to calculate the A and C values. If you go to his website though and read his Q&A, he tells you that when in doubt, take 25 percent of the 30 day average range of said entity. This equation is quite simple with most charting technologies (AVG30(H-L) comes to mind). I trade this system and I do not subscribe to anything of his and it works quite well. At the moment, for the QQQQ, the A value is 13 cents.
-I wish the "Macro ACD" chapter was a bit clearer. While I understand the reasoning behind it, he only really hints at what it means that a -9 or +9 day occurs; does this mean we should go long/short for the long run? Does it mean that that day will be a trending day? A chop day? should we look for a new trend to start (what I suspect)?
-The information provided in this book is not well laid out. I had to reread many sections, and between the lines to really get across what he was trying to say in certain parts. And part of the reason I was even able to discern those facts is because I have experience with other systems and trading in general, a novice would be hard pressed IMO to create a working system from this book.
Conclusion: All in all, I believe this book was worth the price FOR ME. If you already have a system that works for you, by all means, don't throw your money at this book. It can be easily summed up by saying. Take your favorite day trading time segment (ex. 5 minute), put lines at the first bar of the day or this segment, aka "opening range," take 25percent of that entity's 30day average range(H-L), put lines above and below the "opening range" by this number, use all lines as support and resistance, and apply any other indicators you like to them. But then again, most really good systems are simple like that, they simply let the trader's experience guide them. This book will have a place on my bookshelf for sure, but I doubt I would put it with "Reminiscences" like PTJ.
Logical Trader--Its very logical.......2007-03-02
In the course of 25 years, I've traded on the floors of the (3) major exchanges (stocks, options, and futures) as well as trading upstairs for a leading "prop trading house", and for my own account.
Suffice it to say I've interrogated and/or tested out a wide variety of 'systems'--and the fact is Mark Fisher's approach is actually one of very few that have merit. For (4) very logical reasons.
Reason #1.
When followed properly, the ACD Method can work for just about any actively traded product. Stocks, futures, and some fixed income products--as long as you have access to real-time data, a good charting package, and the ability to execute in quick fashion...
Reason #2. Fisher has incorporated a quantitative approach that involved significant back-testing..Pretty straight-forward thinking--every product trades based on trends. And the trade date speaks for it self..Its understanding how to interpret it without overthinking it.
Reason #3 Perhaps the most important--"Fish" has been using this system since he first developed it at Wharton 25 years ago. Its commmon knowledge within the New York and Chicago trading floor markets that he's one of the most consistently profitable traders in the industry---and explains why Trader Monthly Magazine included him in their Top 5 Best of The Rest listing--(their poll is apparently based on rumored annual earnings)..Each of his prop traders--(rumor is that more than 50 are managing capital that he's put up} are required to use this approach...I've asked around...most have been with him for 10 years or more, and those that have left have simply done so because they made so much money, they decided to set up their own prop trading businesses.
The "system" as he explains in the book, is a function of the user embracing a disciplined approach..Hitting singles, riding profits, and taking loses without any emotion is the most fundamental aspect of successful trading..If you don't embrace that, there's no system in the world, including Fisher's ACD Approach, that will work.
Reason #4. When you read the book, you'll want to read it twice--you need to appreciate some basic mathematic principles, and you need to be able to understand how to follow a variety of diagrams (he makes it easy...ACD Method is available on a daily basis via a subscription service over a website.)..
There's never a guarantee when it comes to trading...but between the approach, and the philosophy that Fisher imparts on the reader, this is really very logical.
Full of high sentence but a bit obtuse.......2006-09-07
At times almost ridiculous.
No really...Using the opening range as a basis for trading works. I do it every day. But Fisher makes it all into a highly ideosyncratic dance to which he holds a magic key. The value of A and C.
TO me the book is poorly written and makes much more of things than need be.
If you doodle around with Tradestation and do a little thinking you can find your own way of trading the opening range and it will probably be a lot more flexible than Fisher's. And you won't need to worry about computing the magical numbers.
Fisher is from the 'pivot' school and says the calculated pivot ranges are 'more powerful'. I don't believe it, and he offers no proof.
I'm from the support/resistance school and think that the pivot calculations are purely arbitrary with no logical basis. The only reason they sometimes work is the number of other 'pivot people' out there who also think they work.
This Works!.......2006-08-03
I too was disturbed by the proprietary nature of the A and C numbers, and the somewhat sloppy omission of a few things in the appendices, but there is a lot of good stuff in this book. I have been doing very well trading 5 day rolling pivots in stocks, which only requires the high, low and close for the last five days. There are other usable methods one can apply without the A and C numbers. If you wish to use the ABCD method, I would suggest exploring various volatility measures, especially Toby Crabel on "the stretch" in "Playing the Opening Range Breakout" in STOCKS & COMMODITIES mag. Sept. 1986 (purchasable online). Many books on trading are a waste of time and money; if you have an open mind and are willing to do some work, this book is pure gold.
The Golden Sauce.......2006-03-14
95% of the info in this book is useful. Fisher himself recognizes the fact that the more people apply his method, the more potent it becomes - and that is the logical conclusion of a trend-folllowing breakout system. So, for those weary of reading books in that they think any advantage has attenuated at the time of publication, fear no more.
I'm a daytrader and here is how I've applied the Fisher method(s) to my trading.
1. The Opening Range. This is the only statistically significant data point in the trading day. This is the centerpiece of the Fisher System. I had a programmer automate e-signal for me so that the first 15-minutes are marked by bold yellow lines across the chart. This has made me so much more money, it's hard for even me to believe.
2. The Daily Pivot Range. This is the daily area of support and resistance. There are some nuances to it, so I'll leave you to the book for it, but all of it is stuff that can be done in MS Excel, if not in your head. I had a programmer automate e-signal for me so that the daily pivot range is shaded in blue across the chart.
3. 30-day rolling pivot score. Fisher believes that there is a statistically significant correlation between what will happen today and what happened 30 trading days ago. An example will show how well this works. Today is March 13, 2006. We had a sharp rally in the DOW on Friday (+104 pts). This is when I would normal fade and get short. However, combining the Fisher Daily Pivot Range and the 30-day Rolling Pivot Score, I came up with a net Bullish bias in all my stocks, for the DOW, and the S&P. I made money today, when I would have otherwise lost trying to get short. This day paid for 100 copies of the book..
Incidentally, combining the daily pivot range and the 30-day rolling scoring method has proven successful more than 80% of the time for me.
Thanks Mark. This is the only book out there worth reading. Nothing else even comes close.
That said, his guidance on stop placement is not ideal for me. So, I'm not a complete toady. I'd rather buy something in the middle of the opening range if I feel it's a long.
