Book Description
This work surveys Edwin Dickinson's life and career, both of which revolved around Cape Cod, Buffalo, and New York's Finger Lakes region. It covers the artist's influential career as a teacher, and analyzes Dickinson's self-portraits and major symbolic paintings.

A Major Catalogue Raisonne.......2003-03-25
EDWIN DICKINSON: DREAMS AND REALITIES is a major work. Again we have a catalogue for an exhibition (that started at the Albright-Knox Gallery in 2002 and is still traveling) that is so well written and illustrated that it becomes a standard reference for any library of art.
Dickinson is not a name that carries instant recognition outside the circles of art historians and artists. He spanned (1891 - 1978) a period in American art history which jumped from academic Realism to Cubism and Abstract Expressionism and through all of these changes he retained his own style, pausing here and there to prove that he was thoroughly informed by all the new schools in the arts while continuing his mission as a representational artist. His studios were in New York and in Cape Cod and it is here that he observed and painted the world as he saw it. Some of his canvases took years to complete: other canvases and works on paper were dashed off in a most facile fashion.
This major book celebrates an artist who probably will always be an enigma in the history of American art and brings his entire oeuvre to our attention. We are shown self portraits painted throughout his career, always a fascinating and valid way to track and artist's progress. The color reproductions are a bit bland and tend to flatten the images. Oddly the black and white drawings suffer the same fate, becoming shades of gray rather than strong lines. The various contributors to the book add a significant dimension of awe for this under-appreciated artist. It is up to the viewer of this book to judge how visually important rather than hisortically significant was Edwin Dickinson.
Profusely illustrated with 72 full color reproductions.......2003-03-10
The collaborative effort of Douglas Dreishpoon (Curator of 20th-Century art, Albright-Knox Art Gallery), Mary Ellen Abell (Assistant Professor, Dowling College, Oakdale, New York), and independent American art historian and expert Francis V. O'Connor, Edwin Dickinson: Dreams And Realities showcases the life and work of Edwin Dickinson (1891-1978), a representational painter best known for his abstract expressionist landscapes, nudes, and still life paintings. An informative monograph details Dickinson's more than 35 years as a very highly regarded and influential American painter. Profusely illustrated with 72 full color reproductions and 91 black/white illustrations, Edwin Dickinson: Dreams And Realities is a quite welcome and very highly recommended addition to academic, personal, and professional Art History reference collections.

Andi Watson is a bad Buffy writer.......2006-01-08
I'm a big BtVS fan and have listen to and read many of Joss's interviews. Joss is extremely detailed oriented, but unfortunately, Andi Watson is NOT.
Example, in this comic book, the first story, "White Christmas" there is a graphic of the shopping mall, however, the mall has a sign "Sunnyvale" on it. It's supposed to be "Sunnydale". Furthermore, there's some dialogue a few frames down that references "Sunnyvale" and not "Sunnydale".
It is also apparent that Andi Watson has not watched BtVS much. If she did, she would have known that the dialog for Oz is completely out of character. In addition, we see Buffy relpying to Giles: "Darn tootn'"--sorry Andi, this is a Willowism, not a Buffyism.
Oh! After reading Andi's introduction, we now know she did not watch BtVS, because at the time of her writing this, BtVS was not airing in the U.K. How can ANYBODY allow anyone to write about something they know nothing about?
I think some severe slayage is in order--someone should be beheaded for not catching these mistakes and inconsistancies before running the printing press.
Darn tootn'.
I must say this is the worst Buffy comic I have read. BTW, my favorite Buffy graphic novel so far is Haunted, written by a REAL Buffy writer -- Jane Espenson.
Darn tootn'.
Welcome to the Party.......2002-09-03
This trade paperback includes the stories from issues 4 through 7 of the BTVS comic series. This firmly cements the tradition of reissuing the comic stories under paperback cover with better quality paper, sometimes including an extra tale or art feature added in. This may seem mercenary, but it is a way for people who do not have access to the comics to keep up with another source of Buffy stories.
On the whole, the comic tales are well written and illustrated, and these are no exception. They do focus more on feminine pulchritude though, in the stylized fashion typical of comic illustration. The artwork in this issue is all done by Hector Gomez and Sandu Florea. While the work is good, the characters are a bit too stylized compared to the actual actors. I prefer Cliff Richards and Joe Pimentel, or Joe Bennett and Rick Ketcham
White Christmas - When Buffy finds herself without the resources to buy a new dress for the Christmas dance she overrides Giles misgivings and gets a job at the Popsicle Parlor. Little did she know that the owner has found an entirely new way to chill out.
Happy New Year - Giles is more than perturbed when he discovers that the latest costumer for the school library is a hellhound bent on evening out an old score. Buffy steps in and nearly loses Willow.
New Kid on the Block - Buffy has a new friend - Cynthia. They hatch the idea for an all out slumber party that turns severely spooky when the pizza delivery tried to eat the party.
As always the trade paperbacks are all art and action, but they retain the basic human values of the show. The lack of superhero pomposity is one of the endearing things about the entire Buffy tradition. So order a pizza and settle in for a fun evening's reading.
Nothing too spectacular but still worthwhile.......2001-12-23
The first issue in this trade is "White Christmas" -- the previous trade (Remaining Sunlight) collected issues 1-3 that had a Halloween issue and a Thanksgiving issue to the logical next step is a Christmas issue in this trade collecting issues 4-7 of the ongoing series. :) Buffy gets a job at the mall at an ice cream stand but as usual luck would have it that the owner of the stand is a crazy guy who doesn't like franchise work so he summons an elemental ice demon. Angel makes an appearance in this issue. The characters don't really look like they should, but it gets the story across. Then we have "Happy New Year" where Willow is in a bad mood about Buffy brining Oz the escapee werewolf home using force. Lastly is "New Kid on the Block" Parts one and two where the new girl, who is not what she seems, plans a slumber party. Chaos, of course, ensues. In the intro pages of the trade there are some adorable sketches of a cartoony buffy, giles, etc. which was my favorite aspect of this trade. Not the best plot but it has its good moments of dialogue.
Buffy Kicks.......2001-08-29
this is a great comic book, i collect buffy comics and this one is one of the best, it gives the best descriptions of the "uninvited guests" and its amazing how buffy can fight anything.
gotta love buffy.......2000-10-25
I liked this graphic novel. No matter what form: books, videos, tv, or comics buffy is always entertaining. If you love comics you'll love these. Lots of fun.

Franklin’s
Autobiography is one of the most famous works in American literature. He started it as a private collection of anecdotes for his son, but soon it was transformed into a work of history, both personal and national, revealing Franklin as the man who, as Herman Melville said, possessed “deep worldly wisdom and polished Italian tact, gleaming under an air of Arcadian unaffectedness.
From the Hardcover edition.

Poor Richard's Almanack.......2007-09-30
Love this book. I am a fan of Benjamin Franklin. He is so witty and thoughtful. I also like Henry David Thoreau.
Ben's wisdom.......2007-03-23
Ben's wisdom (or interpretation) are unmistakeable. Wonderful to look at inside and out.
Ben. Franklin humor.......2007-02-21
Relatively short book filled with wit and brief advice (comments) on a variety of topics, definately a lighter and easier style than the autobiography and with more humor.
PoorRichards Almanack.......2007-02-13
Timeless. I read at least a page a day and when I get to the end, start again.
American Classic Must Read for All.......2007-02-11
Benjamin Franklin was a genius and a Renaissance Man. All of these sayings are wise and many are funny. I think this should be required reading for everyone in junior high or high school.

Ki and Tube Float Up The River on a Darling Summer Day.......2006-06-30
Dearest Pam Ella Longfella, I have read your book and it is STINKFOOT. As Marcel Duchamp said about The Baroness Elsa von Freytag-Loringhoven "[The Baroness] is not a futurist. She is the future." One thing that I LOVE about this book is the width and depth and es-space-cially the breadth and thickness of it. It is not very THICK in fact it falls into the category (being itself about a category) of what Wilhelm Busch the former president of Then, would term "Ultra-Thin" [To Borrow another of The Baronesses' Admiration So-societies Corduroy Swaps] and in fact as I seem to have mis-laid my copy, right now and have ordered another from sea-urchin up who refered me back to the amazon dot calmly drifting avoiding the little whirl-pools and ebaylettes continue...I will review another book with the same ultra-thiness, curiously printed in iceland, entitled: the art of Barnoess Elsa von Freytag-Loringhoven from Franci M Naumann's Find Art Gal or Ease. She wasn't born a Barn. On second thought perhaps Ki, herself reviews it best as she relates " [it]was written by Vivian and I, more like thrashed out in our captain's cabin night after night after whatever had appeared on the stage that evening, whereupon Vivian would then fall asleep exhausted but I would type it all up into the early morning light... but every song was Vivian's at the top of his form. Some of these were written directly for the show: You Can't Confound A Flounder, Drowned Sailor's Song, Follow Your Nose, What My Public Wants BLOOD!, Parakeet To Meet You,etc., some were kicking around and needed a home: No Time Like The Future and Ready Maid of Stone." and where are my manners? Ki also introduces us to Stinkfoot as " Stinkfoot is an original, unique, totally eccentric, and completely absorbing Comic Opera. If I don't say so myself... who will? Not only that, it is three hours long" As I fall asleep listening to rare puss-in-boots legged CDz of the original Thekla or Bristol Performances and Blonde on Blondie's Desolation Row or was that King's Head Theatre? I encourage everyone to Buy This Book, it being a wonderful glimpse into the swirl of Vivian Stanshall's outstandup stage and ventriloquist gargle, which will never be equaled or even tally-hold. Dear Tube and Ki I hope I got the words right and rightly so. As always, please feel FREE to write a review of this review or drop by for a spot of tea and crumpled scripts. A good idea, but poorly executed.......2007-03-29
With such a large, expansive system like GURPS it's fairly logical to expect that all the supplements will not be created equal. GURPS Martial Arts is one of those supplements. Overall, the amount of new character options and abilities is really close to zero. The martial art styles you can take using GURPS Martial Arts are really packages of skills, advantages and manuvers that are covered in other, better books. In the end, listing the styles just creates clutter on your character sheet. Like, say, you have 40 points in the Ninjitsu style. What you really have is 40 points worth of skills that are listed under the Ninjitsu style in the Martial Art supplement. So those 40 points would be listed twice. In the end, the information showed in Martial Arts is no different from what is available in Compendium 1 and Compendium 2, which have lots of other handy information. If you are looking for a supplement to expand your GURPS play experience, this one will probably leave you pretty flat (especially if you have the Compendiums already)
GURPS Martial Arts.......2005-05-20
GURPS Martial Arts is a book with lots of different martial arts styles for your characters. It also includes maneuvers, which are like skill subsets. I really like how this book lets you build your own martial arts styles. Martial Arts also includes tables for all the weaponry, such as Sai (for anyone who's ever watched Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Raf uses a pair of these).
A lot of the illustrations are gory, reminding you that GURPS was never meant for kids (Steve Jackson Games should make that clearer, I think). BUT, aside from the "Silly Combat Rule" Bulletproof Nudety, there's no adult content! And while there's gore in some of the pictures, everyone's fully clothed. That's really, really nice.
an excellent resource.......2000-01-27
This is a highly useful book. The information in it can be applied to almost any genre or campaign. The listing of martial arts is comprehensive and there are rules to design your own new ones. I use this book more often than almost any other gurps book that I own. The only downside is the increase in complexity for combat. Extra realism brings extra complexity as usual. Note: you must have the gurps basic set to use this book.
A Must have for people who play GURPS!.......1997-08-14
I have been interested in GURPS and Martial Arts for a long time. This book contains tons of styles and the rules for skills and manuvers are very nicely done. Although it doesn't have Every martial art in existance it does have a wide selection and rules for creating/integrating your own. I integrated Taido in and it worked really well. This book can add flavor to GURPS combat even if it is weapon-oriented (a lot of martial arts are.) However I would recommend the 2nd Edition but overall I loved it! The possiblities are pretty much limitless and that is what makes it so good
Excellent Supplement. A Must for any serious gamer........1996-09-10
GURPS Martial Arts is one of the best Martial Arts supplements I've seen for any game. It is a must for any serious gamer. Staying true to GURPS form a lot of research went into writing this book. It includes both historical information about most of the major fighting styles in the world as well as the game stats. It also expands the GURPS combat rules making them more realistic and fun to play
Customer Reviews:
Nice Introduction / Well organized book.......2007-08-31
Very helpful book and I give it 5 stars for easily fulfilling its purpose, i.e. an introduction to many of the problem solving techniques, and I highly recommend it for that purpose. This book does not go into a comprehensive discussion of the various techniques, nor was it intended to, but it does give a very good introduction to each and you can research further those techniques you would like to use. I have researched some of them on the internet (free of charge).
He categorizes the techniques by function (in other words, he presents the various techniques in the particular stage of the problem solving process in which they are most effective) and gives you an excellent summary in the Appendix.
I have read quite a few books on Problem Solving / Decision Making and they all come down to Divergence and Convergence, or Creative and Critical thinking. One book I read (Psychology of Intelligence Analysis) made the very good point that creative and critical thinking are both absolutely necessary in the problem solving process, however, in his words, they do not mix well. You must consciously and diligently halt all criticism and judgment, no matter how small, during the divergent phase of the problem solving process - "deferred judgment". This is the foundation for any productive brainstorming session, or even any individual analysis of a problem. There will be plenty of time to evaluate later on.
This book functions as a brainstorming session...it presents many ideas and approaches, and allows you to review each one and determine which is best for your situation. Many of the techniques in this book, and any other problem solving book, are really just different variations of brainstorming sessions (larger or smaller groups, an extra step or two, limitations on one thing or another, a change in procedure, etc..) which is OK too. Most problem solving techniques are either brainstorming sessions of some sort, or techniques designed to force you to lay aside your preconceived opinions and study a problem from different angles (yes that is a major simplification).
The book is organized and formatted very well. The information is presented in an interesting manner and never gets boring. Most of the sections are short and sweet, and what few times he goes beyond a couple pages is by necessity. I really liked the "Summary of Steps" that are throughout the book and the mini case studies were nice as well. Personally, I would like to have seen at least a couple extended case studies, but that was not the purpose of this book.
One of my favorites is the Delphi technique. I have actually used a form of it several times in my work before I even knew it was a technique, and I suspect many of you have used it too in an informal way. I have had some good success with it and believe it to be an excellent technique in any stage of the problem solving process, whether I am dealing with professionals, layman, mechanics, or bozos.
Very helpful, well written and well-organized book. The $15 or so for the book is a great investment for your career or business. I am sure there are more comprehensive books that cost alot more, but this one fulfills it purpose nicely.
Practical tools for problem solving and brainstorming.......2007-01-06
There are a lot of books out there on creative problem solving that are inspiring, but a person is left wondering how to really solve problems.
101 Creative Problem Solving Techniques is a great books filled with practical tools/exercies/activities to get people to think outside-the-box. My company has embraced brainstorming and problem solving as a critical element in doing business; this book is a much used resource.
Nice book with good ideas.......2005-09-14
I liked the book because it shows you in a clear way several techniques to generate ideas. Some of the techniques are unpractical, and some are incredibly simple, effective and easy to implement. I have a copy of this book at work and I use it with my team.
Excellent.......2004-03-10
This book is an excellent collection of creative-thinking techniques that will make you more creative in your business and personal lives. This ranks close to the classic book on creative-thinking "Thinkertoys" by Michael Michalko.
Original and good.......2004-02-08
This book is both original and good. The part that is good is not original and the part that is original is not good.
