Book Description
A major historical phenomenon of our century, exile has been a focal point for reflections about individual and cultural identity and problems of nationalism, racism, and war. Whether emigrés, exiles, expatriates, refugees, or nomads, these people all experience a distance from their homes and often their native languages. Exile and Creativity brings together the widely varied perspectives of nineteen distinguished European and American scholars and cultural critics to ask: Is exile a falling away from a source of creativity associated with the wholeness of home and one’s own language, or is it a spur to creativity?
In essays that range chronologically from the Renaissance to the 1990s, geographically from the Danube to the Andes, and historically from the Inquisition to the Holocaust, the complexities and tensions of exile and the diversity of its experiences are examined. Recognizing exile as an interior experience as much as a physical displacement, this collection discusses such varied topics as intellectual exile and seventeenth-century French literature; different versions of home and of the novel in the writings of Bakhtin and Lukács; the displacement of James Joyce and Clarice Lispector; a young journalist’s meeting with James Baldwin in the south of France; Jean Renoir’s Hollywood years; and reflections by the descendents of European emigrés. Strikingly, many of the essays are themselves the work of exiles, bearing out once more the power of the personal voice in scholarship.
With the exception of the contribution by Henry Louis Gates Jr., these essays were originally published in a special double issue of Poetics Today in 1996. Exile and Creativity will engage a range of readers from those whose specific interests include the problems of displacement and diaspora and the European Holocaust to those whose broad interests include art, literary and cultural studies, history, film, and the nature of human creativity.
Contributors. Zygmunt Bauman, Janet Bergstrom, Christine Brooke-Rose, Hélène Cixous, Tibor Dessewffy, Marianne Hirsch, Denis Hollier, Henry Louis Gates Jr., Linda Nochlin, Leo Spitzer, Susan Rubin Suleiman, Thomas Pavel, Doris Sommer, Nancy Huston, John Neubauer, Ernst van Alphen, Alicia Borinsky, Svetlana Boym, Jacqueline Chénieux-Gendron

Customer Reviews:
Keep Far Away From this manga.......2007-08-29
Though being only slightly interesting this series is dull and un inspired.Only if because i was waiting for her to explain some plot, or what the awakening is and how it awakens. or how it could be Noriko. Or I don't know..if she was ever going to explain anything. I got to volume 4 and still didn't care about any of the characters nor did i understand this "political" crap side story the author adds in.
Noriko is your typical damsel in distress and the names of the characters couldn't be dumber. It's tired, it's been done better. and besides the characters not being able to communicate in the begining (which how this is a plus i can barely understand) THERE IS NO INNOVATION.
this story is as boring as it's undistinguishable lead characters. if i don't care after FOUR volumes...you know a story is lacking something...like real heart or genuine interest.
A good story, for younger readers.......2007-03-04
This is a review to express my feeling after having completed the 14 volume series.
I picked up this manga b/c I was having Red River withdrawal, and thought I'd give another 'teleport to a distanct country/time/place' manga a try.
The reason I'm giving this manga 4 starts instead of three is because as a story, this is well written and despite being disappointed by the lack of 'romance' in a manga that's labeled shoujo... I did enjoy it. As a fantasy/action story, this one was rather refreshing. The main heroine doesn't annoy me like so many 'virginal' pure manga heroines do, she does her best to be strong throughout and isn't self-absorbed or whiney, and you just have to love the main hero of the story. His predicament reminds me a lot of The Violinist of Hameln, raging demon on the inside that if he doesn't learn to control, will consume him, etc... The villains were pretty well done as well. Gotta love those cute lil' Chimos hehe.
For me tho, I wanted to see more development in the relationship between Noriko and Izark, there just wasn't enough romance for me to be satisfied. I was expecting even a KISS at the end or something... major dissapointment there... I can count the number of times Izark kissed Noriko on one hand throughout all fourteen volumes. I would recommend this for a younger reader, but if you are like me- (you enjoy a bit of fantasy and would rather search after a mature + label) I would recommend Red River instead.
Greetings From Far Away- An Overview of the Entire Series.......2007-01-20
Viz's Shoujo imprint has some of the best epic fantasy/romance manga on the market. From Far Away is comparable to series like Red River, Basara, and Fushigi Yugi: Genbu Kaiden in that they focus on the lives and loves of young women with great and often seemingly tragic destinies. I dearly love the above mentioned series, and since From Far Away has recently concluded its English language release, I'll tell you how it stacks up in comparison.
At the heart of From Far Away is a beauty and beast love story set in a fantasy world. The beauty is Noriko Tachiki, a spacey high schooler whose brush with death sends her hurtling through time and space to an alternate dimension. She is the Awakening, a ominous person spoken about in legend who will herald a disastrous time for this new land. The beast is Izark Kia Taj, a handsome, stand-offish mercenary with a terrible fate. He harbors the Sky Demon within himself, which will consume him when he comes in contact with the Awakening. As political turmoil and civil unrest engulf the land, powerful men would stop at nothing to claim the Sky Demon's power for themselves.
The characterization is perhaps the best aspect of From Far Away. Noriko manages to get her act together fairly quickly, and evolves into a plucky, resourceful heroine. Izark, of course, learns about love and stuff. There rather slowly unfolding romance is responsible for the best scenes in this series and any other shoujo comic I have read thus far. Of course, over the course of their journey to break their fates, they meet a colorful cast of side-characters. Another admirable aspect of From Far Away is the way the artist portrays people that otherwise wouldn't be portrayed as heroic as heroes. From a stout middle-aged woman with wisdom and nerves of steel to an aging political administrator, likable side characters drift in and out of the story.
However, the political storyline is the weakest aspect and it shares nearly as much face time as the character interactions. Of course, there is a crew of villains who want Izark and Noriko for their own nefarious purposes. The villains are never particularly well-developed and come across as being crazy evil for the flimsiest of reasons. The political situation of the world was never particularly interesting from the get-go but it is continuously developed throughout the story without ever managing to spark one iota of interest. Indeed, From Far Away stumbles by cementing Noriko and Izark as a couple way to soon. By volume 9, they are pretty much dedicated to each other and they don't have anywhere to go as characters. This leaves five volumes for the uninteresting political storyline to take center stage. Honestly, by the time the final volume was published, I was so sick of the good vs. evil storyline it almost didn't pick it up.
Overall, From Far Away is a series that went on too long. I don't think it helps that it is an acquired taste. After going back over the entire thing, I find it hard to believe that I followed it until the end because the first two volumes are dreadful. I have fond memories of many parts from the middle of the series, and I wouldn't hesitant to recommend it to younger girls that aren't mature enough to handle other shoujo epics like Basara and Red River. However, this just isn't a story that will endure multiple readings.
actually.......2007-01-14
I had actually read this story in another form (with different charaters*) and wanted to see how that story stayed true to form... and it did and i love it... i will have to find a husband who can afford my manga habit...Hey, there are worse habits.... i recommend this manga to all who read manga...
Great artwork!.......2006-08-27
This is one of my favorite manga. I love the artwork. It's beautiful! The storyline is a fantasy with a little romance thrown in. The lead female character is helpless alot so that kind of bugs me but then sometimes, very seldom, she is fearless. The lead male character is cool! A great read! This manga is 14 volumes. The end is almost here, I can't wait to see how it finishes up.
Book Description
There are books written especially from the male perspective on how to parent, and how to participate in the birth - but none on how to be pregnant. Until now. What you hold in your hand is a combination sage advice, expert opinion, and side-splitting truths on the up and downside of pregnancy for men. Alan Thicke, one of America's favorite funny men and father of three, with a little help from father-friends including Ray Romano, Wayne Gretzky and Dave Barry, has written the ultimate how-to guide for dads-to-be.
Alan provides the real information and comic relief necessary to assure that your sense of humor doesn't fall victim to your pregnancy, as he expertly guides you through each step of the nine months. From Breasts to Birthing Class, How Men Have Babies is about pregnancy from a man's perspective, intended to get him involved early and fully.
Customer Reviews:
Not bad, but, not wonderful.......2005-10-12
I got this for my husband. Alan Thicke is kind of consistently and gently slamming or joking about women and thier behavior while pregnant. It is humorous most of the time... so I didn't have a problem with it. But, If you're looking for a book that is really educational or filled with knowledge about pregnancy-this isn't it. Like the title says, this book is more about teaching men to cope with thier wives while the are pregnant than it is about pregnancy.
Most entertaining of the expectand dad books!.......2003-06-29
Funny and informative. Bought this for hubby but of course read it first. Thicke is in great comedic form, lots of interesting facts, and although he has lots of physiological/medical info it's not overwhelming...Also a very quick read- laughed aloud alot and then passed it on to my better half.
Just what the doctor ordered!.......2000-05-02
After reading so many books that are filled with facts, statistics etc. It was REALLY fun to sit down with a lighthearted book that really made me laugh. I already knew the odds of a pregnant woman over 40 giving birth to a baby with Downs Syndrome, and why it's not OK to drink while you're pregnant. This is not the reason I went to a book by Alan Thicke. If you just need to be entertained and relate to the stories he tells, buy this book!
I thought this book was funny and interesting.......2000-03-25
I really enjoyed this book. We as woman know what we are feeling those 9 months of pregancy, its nice to see it from a man's point of view. It was fun to compare Alan's experience to that of my husband's. I think it takes a lot of courage for a man to put his pregancy thoughts and fears down on paper for the world to read. This book just show's another talent of the multi-talented Alan Thicke.
It was fun to see a man's point of view on pregnancy.......2000-03-25
I thought it was a good book, Alan showed the man's point of view which most of us woman can't see during the 9 months of pregancy. We know what we as woman are feeling but in this book we can see the man's side. I also enjoyed the quotes from other celebrities. This book show's another talent of the multi-talented Alan Thicke, he's a great author too.

2 masters at work here........2000-08-16
From the Elmore Leonard book, Quentin Tarantino is the best filmaker to take his work and turn it into the perfect movie that it is. Leonard's book was already good, but Tarantino understood how you need the extras in the story to make it great and the movie does all of that and more!
I am lying when I say I have read this book, but so what?.......2000-01-23
I saw this movie. In fact I watched it several times, because it was near perfect. One of my favorite scenes was the bailing out of jail of Jackie Browne by the bail bondsman. Here is a guy who is firmly fixed within his niche in life, is used to dealing with criminals in a professional capacity - purely business wise. Then he meets Jackie Browne.
As she walks toward him from her cold confinement, compassion for her plight embraces him, not effusively, but tentatively. He is a professional bail bondsman, after all. But he wants to get to know her, and so he does. The intersection of their lives is arrived at from two quite distinct cultural lines. Yet they become friends, for both want it, mostly him. He even stops into a music store and buys a Motown sound, the Shawndells (sp?). That is great characterization, simply superb, for it is a real parsing out of the humanity even the most lonesome, the most calloused of us can at times feel for another, and rendered in the movie perfectly. They are basically decent people and it shows. That's just one of the things about this movie I like.
WOW..........1999-11-17
Wow...based on Rum Punch by Elmore Leonard, this hardboiled but tamed Tarantino script has just about all you could want in a Tarantino film. But the finished product lacks a real raw power like Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction. Even True Romance was a little better than this.
THEY GOT THE MONEY!.......1998-08-24
Jackie Brown is a wonderfully acted movie! It does go a little too long and is a little boring at times. It's a movie about a girl, a killer, a cop, and a loan man trying to get to the money (robbing it). Kids wouldn't like this. They wouldn't get it. Rated R: for language, violence, a brief scene of sexuality
a great plot, who's playing who?.......1998-08-05
This is a great screenplay you wont wan't to put it down. Elmore Lenord does it again, you can't wait for the end, but you don't wan't the book to stop.

the unoffical work of Mark MacDonald and James Hogwood.......2000-09-25
I enjoyed the Final Fantasy VII: survival guide because of its details and writting format. It gives a great walkthrough of the game in a reader-friendly format. The illustations in this book let you see perfectly what the writters are talking about. Without a walkthrough of any role-playing game, you are bound to overlook several items throughout the game. This walkthrough is a perfect book to read if you want to get the maximum amount of enjoyment out of the wonderful game. While this book is not as well written as the offical walkthrough, it is a great, less expensive substitute.

Book Description
The Encyclopedia of Trading Strategies is for traders who want to take the next step to consistently profitable trading. The authors--themselves seasoned veterans of the futures trading arena--pinpoint the trading methods and strategies that have been shown to produce market-beating returns. Their rigorous and systematic backtesting of each method, using the same sets of markets and analytic techniques, provides a scientific, system-based approach to system development...to help you assemble the trading system that will put you on the road to becoming a more consistently profitable trader.
Customer Reviews:
I liked, but it could be better.......2007-03-25
I liked this book.
it presented many ideas and a right pragmatic approach to test a trading system.
I found tough the statistics part, but it's not an author's fault: it's statistics.
in the final part I found many repetition (many pages might be saved just writing: " hey, for this system we apply the same said at pag. xyz..").
Only two things remained a mistery to me (but I'm not much intellingent..): why didn't the author make any test for longer horizons? in the end, the strategies never approached a longer term trading strategy: usually the trades last few days.
maybe it's not worth? the author doesn't tell us
ah, and it's not an encyclopedia: why did he choose this name?
this is the second mistery...
Too Technical for Me.......2006-11-05
The Encyclopedia of Trading Strategies is well written and is a good book if you are looking for something very technical and mechanical. I was disappointed with the book. I thought it would offer chart set ups or set ups per technical indicators. Instead, it offered codes, etc for setting up mechanical systems.
Research oriented traders, read this one!!.......2005-12-27
Wow! For the research oriented person, this book is great! Not
only does it go over large variety of different approaches
to the commodities market, but the authors let you know the
pitfalls and traps to various methods of evaluating the markets.
The book is written in a concise manner that allows quick naviagation
and further study of any desired topics. The authors have
documented their sources well and really covered a lot of ground!
A *must* read for traders! *AND* I was interested in
the companion CD, called the number listed on the web site
and got to speak with one of the authors! He was very helpful
and answered all my questions right away! You can't beat
that for service with a book!
Best Book on Building Trading Strategies.......2005-12-19
This is by far the most complete and advanced work I've read on the subject. However, read Robert Pardo's "Design, Testing, and Optimization of Trading Systems" first if you are new to backtesting.
A must read for strategy traders.......2005-09-07
This is a good book. Everyone who is thinking about trading and/or is trading already should get a copy of the book. There isn't any "holy grail" strategy in this book, by the way. Rather, this book is about teaching how all these different indicators have performed under strict test conditions and unveils some of the mysteries about different strategies that people have talked about over the years. IMO, the author's work can be the basis of a great system. The first step has already been taken by the author, and you just have to elaborate it to add your flair and style. Happy trading!
