This is one of the best books on photography I've read so far. Lots of great tips and ideas. I really like the down to earth language he uses to explain his concepts.

The book is written in plain English, easy to understand and very enlightening.
I would recommend to amateur photographer and even beginners who like to know more about Digital photography, Photoshop and more.

For the digital newbie, or photography newbie for that matter, this is a nice intro book. I'm sure that a lot of the techie issues that other reviewers are calling Mr. Peterson to task on will be addressed in a 2nd edition.
There is enough information on photographic concepts and techniques to redeem the book for some of the technical flaws regarding digital images (See Rennie Petersen's review for info on the techie stuff).
If you haven't read "Understanding Exposure" by Bryan Peterson I'd highly recommend it.
Ignore the digital techie parts.......2007-05-01
I purchased this book when I got my first camera and knew nothing about photography but quite a bit about the physics of light and computers. This book helped me take some great shots because it does a great job of explaining, in simple to understand terms, photography basics and provides a plethora of pictures to illustrate the concepts. If you are a rank beginner, this book will walk you through aperture, f stops, the basics of exposure and basic composition to produce good photos and I highly recommend it for that purpose.
The technical aspects of the book -- both digital camera components and computer formats -- range from dumbed down to the point of being overstated to plainly wrong, an issue covered in several other reviews. However, they do give enough of an introduction to allow one to understand better, more accurate and more detailed discussions of technical components. If you know nothing about the "digital" (as opposed to film) side of cameras and formats, it serves as a readable introduction to the meaning of the terms. Be aware that most of the information beyond what the terms mean is wrong.
If you are anything more than a rank beginner I suggest you skip this book. If you are just starting out and more than a little intimidated by the seemingly complex world of "taking a good picture" then you will the book of value.
Excellent first book.......2007-03-29
This is a really great book to start off with. It explains all the basics and more. Easy to understand and full of great ideas and techniques, interspersed with humor. Sound ideas that will help you become a better photographer. Excellent style of writing. I've really enjoyed and have have learned from his books.

Very enjoyable light reading.......2007-09-23
This autobiography is well worth the time to read. Bruce Bruce writes about his life and the people who most influenced him: his mother and uncle among others. The content is light hearted and funny; the CD included is of a live performance, which gives the reader exposure to his comic act. The only complaint, that I find very annoying, is bleeping out certain words of the concert CD.

Thoroughly enjoyed Bruce Bruce's autobiography. A reccommended read for all ages.. keeps you smiling and thinking at the same time. A real page turner!!.. very entertaining!
Warm-hearted book.......2005-09-11
Bruce Bruce is living out his dream, and this book provides information on how he came to be a successful comedian. The best thing about the book is seeing how Bruce Bruce maintains a strong sense of family and values. He is grateful for his blessings and that's a wonderful quality. If only the book were more lengthy, we could further enjoy reading about his background and finding out what it takes to make it in the comedy industry. Recommended read.

STAGOLEE, POST 2000.......2006-11-12
My plan was to read I, Stagolee on next week's flight to Madrid. My mistake was to review the first chapter last Friday. I GOT HOOKED! I couldn't put it down all weekend. I've known the story of Stagolee since childhood. I've even sung Jackie Wilson's version of the ballad with friends. Most of my acquaintance with late 19th century African American literature comes from my research on black utopias written since that period. Amazingly, Cecil Brown's narrative is reminiscent of that staccato, syncopated, blues laden style.
Brown has raised the pimp and infamous "bad nigga" Stagolee to the heroic proportions many, if not most, downtrodden, harassed, ill treated African Americans of that day must have seen him. Even today the pimp is celebrated as a person with guts, ingenuity, style and charm. In underclass neighborhoods one can't get more dynamic or independent than the pimp or the gangster. After all, post Civil Rights, everybody else with those qualities has long since moved away. Rap and Hip Hop artists portray themselves as today's equivalent of a Stagolee and despite being reviled by those outside the community they rake in huge sums of money from both the underclass and from the very middle and upper classes by whom they are condemned. One hundred years after the death of Stagolee virtually the same relative socio-political conditions prevail among blacks in America. There was then and is now little chance for an uneducated black man to achieve both wealth and respect in the rough and tumble slums and there is a wealth of undereducated humanity living in those slums. We cannot say whether or not a pimp or gangster would turn to altruistic politics given the chance for sober reflection. Many people say that the Cripps gang leader recently executed in California, Stanley Tookie Williams, made such an attempt once given that chance in prison. Rap music mogul, Russell Simmons of Def Jam records, while not born of the underclass, is a rare person still to reach back and try to build a political movement founded in those who celebrate the gangster and pimp life style both in and outside of that community.
Maybe post 2000, Russell Simmons represents the new form Brown's Stagolee has taken. He's a "bad nigga," no doubt; pushed forward and inspired by, perhaps utopian, but still very much necessary dreams for a stable, peaceful, prosperous independence minded African America. I'm just pissed that he, Cecil Brown, and Stagolee have upset my plans for next week. Can anyone suggest a good book for my flight to Madrid?

Probably the best book for the average player.......2005-12-22
Well, I don't normally write reviews, but given the quality of some of the earlier reviews, I feel compelled to speak up. I am a reasonably strong player (USCF 2200 years ago, today FIDE 2100) and know a little bit about chess theory, having trained several junior players over the years. I have bought hundreds of chess books and I know what it takes to improve.
The key to improving in chess is to learn the basic principles and then study typical positions which exemplify those principles. The study of master games is the best way to do this and there are no strong players who have not made a study of many master games.
The problem with the endgame is that there are few good books on the subject. Part of the problem is that, unlike the early middlegame, the endgame cannot be easily categorized into specific pawn structures. Most books deal with very basic endgames such as rook and pawn against rook. Perhaps you will play some of these endgames every now and then, but most players need to know how to play more complex positions. This book does an excellent job and, in my opinion, accomplishes the task of teaching this aspect better than almost any other book. A series of basic principles are laid down: 1) when to exchange and what to exchange 2) the two on one 3) strategic thinking etc etc and examples are shown.
This book would suit players up to about USCF 2000, ELO 1900 etc. (yes, even the more experienced can benefit from this book). By all means read a book on basic endgames (I like Albert's book "Just the Facts") but have a look at this book. The endgame demands serious study by all players who aspire to a rating of 2200 or above. Shereshevky's book "Endgame Strategy" is good too, but this book is better for the average player. In fact, there is some overlap (at least conceptually) between the Shereshevsky book and this one, but this one is a more entertaining read!).
Yes, in reply to one reviewer, the format is a little cute. But it seems to work (at least it does for me, and I am quite critical). It certainly isn't dry. Perhaps, in my dotage, I need to be entertained as well as informed.
Everyone should have a copy of this book. Andy Soltis continues to produce great books. This is one of his best.
Really Good Read on a critical subject.......2004-05-27
This book is really good at teaching the most critical aspects of the endgame. It is probably suitable for players up to around 1800 USCF.
Beyond that rating level, something more like Shereshevkys' series would be more appropriate.
Don't be put off by the single reviewer who signed on and left 3 reviews (two from Australia, one from new York) with 1 star. He clearly has some sort of ax to grind.
This book is very good, and worth getting.
Amazon.com needs to do a better job at eliminating multiple reviews from the same person.
What Secrets?.......2003-07-26
It is difficult to avoid the conclusion that the great reviews about it on this website were written by the author himself. The book is absolute RUBBISH.
I have never read a book with so little genuine chess content. The vast majority of the book consists of stupid (and annoying) discussion between the author, and a pupil concerning endgame principles. The trouble is, the discussion is so general and basic as to be meaningless. It only offers basic principles such as "keep your rook active", with little to no practical examples.
The book fails to cover numerous key endgame topics, such as pawn structures, pawn breakthroughs, entry squares for the king.
The title is completely misleading. The book is limited to basic concepts, which even then, are poorly explained, with very little supporting analysis or examples. The depth of analysis is truly pathetic - frequently no more than one or two lines of play, looking ahead 3-4 moves. If only endgames were this simple.
DON'T BUY THIS BOOK.
What Secrets?.......2003-07-25
Having read all the great reviews about this book, it is difficult to avoid the conclusion that they were written by the author himself. This book is DREADFUL.
Contrary to the title, it contains no secrets whatsoever. Rather, it states no more than obvious principles that any half decent player knows. What's more, it is full of general statements, lacking in concrete examples. Further, numerous key topics are not covered at all; eg pawn break throughs; penetration squares for the King.
The book contains extremely little analysis. On numerous occasions, it says something like: "If White plays this move, he should draw" without offering any supporting analysis whatsoever.
Making it even worse is the endless discussion between the author and pupil. I suspect this was put it to compensate for the lack of genuine chess content. Take out the endless dialogue bewteeen author and pupil and the book would only be around 20 pages.
Don't buy this book.
Don't waste your money.......2003-07-24
This book has to be the worst chess book of all time. 75% of the content consists of inane discussion between the author and a fictious pupil, containing no insight or relevance to chess whatsoever.
The analysis of positions is extremely scant; typically one or two lines of play only, looking ahead just four moves.
A more appropriate title for the book would be "Secrets for Players Rated Below 1200". For example, the book contains such wonderful insights as "Passed pawns increase in value as they progress further down the board" - hardly the insight of a grandmaster.
Don't waste your money.

No es lo que esperaba........2005-11-30
Fue el primer libro de ajedrez que compré(despues de oir que los finales eran primero) y el libro me descepcionó, la información es deficiente, los diagramas no estan en la pagina que se necesita (a veces tienes que adelantarte 2 paginas para ver el diagrama del que hablan); los analisis son malos siempre con una sola variante, maximo 2 (como si fuera tan facil), hay veces en que el "maestro" dice "el blanco debe ganar aqui con.." pero no se justifica con ningun analisis; tambien esta lleno de caricaturas sobre los jugadores que son de muy mal gusto; y lo peor no hay nada de secretos todo el tiempo es una aburrida conversacion, que no te enseña la tecnica para saber jugar los finales; el libro en español se llama "Finales de ajedrez" cuando leí el título en inglés, me moria de la risa...
En conclusión, no gasten su dinero en este libro, que al final de cuentas no les deja nada.

This book is fantastic!! It really get into the details so you clearly understand the path of where things come from. It's enlightening and well worth the money. While educational in nature it is also very interesting. You can't help running around the house looking for someone to tell them what you just read.

Stuff is a terrific exploration of the lifecyle of products and services that we pay for as consumers. This book feeds us info, but more importantly, shows us how to be more aware of what we consume and why. Great exercise for anyone interested in learning or teaching about our environment, (which should be everyone!)
Book and HTML versions are very different.......2007-01-03
I bought the "HTML edition" thinking that I'd save a tree and burn pixels instead. But the HTML is not the book; it is a very short essay. If you're expecting the same content as what's on paper, be warned.
Excellent information! An Easy & Fun Read!.......2006-07-31
Ryan and Durnings book contains excellent information about products we use everyday, and how our choices matter. After reading the first section tracing the history of coffee, I was prompted to go to my health food store and purchase "shade coffee" (organic or cooperatively produced).
I especially liked the sections at the end of each chapter on "What to Do?" with their helpful recommendations. I'm a social psychologist and author of "Quotes, Questions & Actions for Global Understanding". I highly recommend Ryan and Durning's book to all who want to easily make better choices in their day-to-day activities.
Serious but fun read.......2006-02-08
This is one fun and informative book and one I am buying for young as well as older friends. I sit here typing on a computer keyboard and because of the book I see things I never really stopped to see before. And with this comes questions and answers about how many people and natural resources does it take to make all the elements of this modern marvel. Not just the keyboard, monitor and speakers, but the people behind Amazon.com who are consuming coffee, flushing toilets, using lights and machines to process my order.
This is what the book is all about. Becoming quiet and looking around at everything we touch and consume and looking at the bigger picture and 'seeing' all the hands, and natural resources it has taken to produce the coffee we drink, water we drink, car we drive, magazines we read, lights we use, clothes we wear, and the list goes on.
At the end of each chapter, rather than leave the reader feeling like a glutton and bad, the authors have suggested better choices or alternative. Like writing about the average T-shirt and what it takes to make one to what it takes to care for one the authors suggest that one wash only full loads and don't wash after every use but when the item is actually dirty. T-shirts in summer cool the body better which means less AC use, and in winter extra layers of clothing means less heating costs.
Anyway, the book is one that even when I re-read it I discover something new that I hadn't read before. Will check out their other books as well.
