Book Description

In this illustrated biography of Daniel Johnston, his life and art are chronicled through extremely rare photos from his early childhood through all stages of his career, along with his own artwork, interviews with the people in his life, and an up to date discography. About Daniel Johnston: Daniel Johnston has spent the last 20 or so years exposing his heartrending tales of unrequited love, cosmic mishaps, and existential torment to an ever-growing international cult audience. Initiates, including a healthy number of discerning musicians and critics, have hailed him as an American original in the style of bluesman Robert Johnson and country legend Hank Williams. A number of artists -- among them the Dead Milkmen, Yo La Tengo, the Velvet Underground's songs. And he as collaborated with the likes of Jad Fair (a founding member of Half Japanese, who've also done Daniel's songs), the Butthole Surfers, Bongwater/Shimmydisc guru Kramer, and members of Sonic Youth. Daniel gained his widest public exposure to date when, at the 1992 MTV Music Awards, Nirvana leader Kurt Cobain (who constantly touted Daniel in interviews) wore a Johnston T-shirt.

It's not much of an exaggeration to say that next month is Daniel Johnston Month in New York. The Biennial begins on March 2, with more than a dozen of Mr. Johnston's recent hallucinatory pen and Magic Marker drawings on view. -- The New York Times

3 out of 5 stars A Few Grievances.......2007-03-17

This is a jumpy, amateur publication. Maybe that's okay -- if you can think of it in the context of Daniel's own early, home-made work. It succeeds in collecting interesting epherma from throughout Daniel's life but it would not be a good place for an introduction to this complicated man. If you have seen the film (The Devil and Daniel Johnston) and have an appreciation for his music and/or visual art, then by all means pony up the dough and fill some gaps in what you already know.

5 out of 5 stars Van Gogh of Rock.......2000-06-08

I've always been a great fan of Daniel, and I'm so thankful to finally get a book about him! This book answers many questions. It's great to finally hear the whole story! I wasn't aware of Daniel's visual art, and it was great to see hundreds of reproductions of his drawings and see how they're all tied into his complicated Hobbit-esque subreality of Daniel's own creation. The book gave me a deeper understanding of Daniel's creative process. Inspiring!

5 out of 5 stars Rock and Toil.......2000-06-07

Although much could be made of Daniel Johnston's troubled life and the wild stories it produced the author choose to down play this part of the Daniel saga (not completely ignoring it) choosing instead to decontruct his artistic process with brillant results. The book includes plenty of Daniels art, lyrics, and collorbations. Musicians have done well covering his songs and in an unusual twist, artist Ron English "covers" Daniel's drawings with amazing results. Daniel, in my humble opinion, is a national treasure and it is pleasing to see him written about with such insight and respect. I would love to see author Tarssa Yazdani tackle someone like Johnathan Richmond, Mojo Nixon or maybe even a visual artist.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book.......2000-05-15

I loved this book. It's a heartbreaking story of how raw genius for songwriting can almost but not quite be beaten down by mental illness and the music industry. But with a little help from his friends, this guy keeps turning out gems of songs and glorious drawings about survival and triumph. And his life's story is still being lived. This subject deserves a second book, and hopefully, a happy ending. It would also make a great movie. Hey, Mike Meyers, here's your next role.

5 out of 5 stars My thoughts and a response to the Dentist.......2000-05-02

Dentist: Hello Daniel Johnston fans. I'm sorry, but I don't really agree that this is definitive account of Daniel's life.

Fan: Of course you don't because you're not mentioned in the book. It's obvious you're bitter because no one asked your opinion. Not a definitive account? 95% of the information in this book comes from Daniel himself, his closest friends, not to mention his parents. What are you thinking?

Dentist: You see, I have been a friend of "Danny's" for most of his life and believe the early portion of Tarssa's account is bogus.

Fan: Bogus? I have spoken to the author and Daniel about this book and the information has come from INTERVIEWS WITH REAL PEOPLE so what you are saying is that everyone is lying?

Dentist: I know I'll get alot of "this review didn't help" but who cares.

Fan: Well, if you're really Daniel's friend wouldn't you want this book to do well? For him? Doesn't this book celebrate the man, the artist, the songwriter? Not to mention clarifying alot of misconceptions that have been floating around for years? Isn't the overall perception of this book positive or am I missing something? I've read it ten times! Try reading it off of Nitris Oxide (sp)

Dentist: I lived it with Danny.

Fan: Then why didn't they interview the siamese twin?

Dentist: I visited him when he was in Weston State Hospital in Weston, West Virginia; I picked him up from his home in New Cumberland, WV and brought him into my home to listen to his troubled times during manic as well as depressive stages, I was there when his medicine wouldn't work, I was there when his parents, Bill and Mabel, needed someone to talk too, I was there when Danny decided to start recording again and dug out my bass to play along, I was there when we practice in Bill and Mabel Johnston's basement preparing for "Artistic Vice".

Fan: All I can say to this is READ THE BOOK! There are many accounts of the friends that have helped him throughout the years. Contact the publisher so you can give an interview for the next edition. Quit bitching.

Dentist: I am still here when Danny calls from Texas at least twice a week.

Fan: You don't have to fib. A little bird told me it MIGHT be once a month. Dentists aren't allowed to use hyperbole.

Dentist: Don't label Bill and Mabel Johnston as religous zealots. They are good and honest,God fearing people and have raised Danny the best they could.

Fan: I know for a fact that Mabel and Bill have both read this book and they don't feel the way you do. I looked for the word zealot and can't find it anywhere. You are so off base with that statement. This book talks endlessly about the support they have given Daniel since his childhood and never ONCE does it say anything bad about them.

Dentist: Yes, Danny had his moments of fuzzy recollection,

Fan: You say you've read this book but that's all you can come up with is "fuzzy recollection" I would say objectively he is quite lucid in many of his recollections.

Dentist: and yes he didn't always get along with his parents, but they do love him and Danny loves them.

Fan: Where does it say anywhere in this book that they don't love each other!

Dentist: I love him too, and am still waiting for a "definitive" auto-biography. This one isn't it.

Fan: It's not an auto-biography! It's a handbook. Do you love him enough to want what's best for his musical career? Thank God you don't have clout.

Was this review helpful to you?

Fan: Yes, in a way. It made me re-read the book to try and find out where the this guy is coming from and after reading the "more about me" section it's obvious he's bitter about not being interviewed for the book. I'm just glad that he didn't facilitate a book about Daniel himself for half of it would have been about Dentistry and how much he loves blood, and we would have to find out why the walking advertisement for Clockwork Orange puts a pacifier in his mouth. The one question I have for the dentist is......

Why didn't you let Kramer play bass?

        Book Description

Thomas Noonan Peters is an entrepreneur down on his luck. He's living on the streets of New York City and his pants are ripped and he has a new friend. It could not get much worse for the self-proclaimed renaissance man, but in Hi, How Are You? it does. Usually Peters will flee from the slightest difficult situation; no problem was too small that he could not run away from it. But, Peters has an odd feeling about this friend. This person HAS to be his friend and no one else, he felt. It is that particular thought, like a lead bolt in the middle of his brain, that despite all his efforts to ignore it and to avoid it and to run away from it, causes Peters a lot of grief.

Others on the streets eventually call Peters' newly found friend the "moon man". It is an appropriate name for the tall, gangly, nearly mute creature that latches onto Peters, though Peters forever refers to him as "him" or "you", as if the moon man was simply an extension of himself. Together this pair gets into a lot of trouble. The friendship eventually leads to the destruction of Earth, but that comes at the end of the book. Before the Earth is destroyed Peters and the moon man tramp about the streets of New York, meeting other strange characters. They are nearly cast in an underground film, they sleep with dogs, cry over sewer plates, they are attacked by a mime, Peters pretends to be James Dean, the moon man begins to collect odd items from the garbage and drags them around in shopping bags and, they try to kill Santa Claus. In Hi, How Are You? a gift of a broken eggbeater is a sign of affection and the very sighting of a particular shopping mall sends Peters into deadly tailspin of despair.

                    Book Description

Everyone who's in business, works for a business, or even just gives others the business is amazed: Scott Adams never lacks for yet another way to lampoon the corporate world. It's not that Adams is anti-business. He's more anti-bad boss than anything. But poor management practices, the effects of bad decisions, and what it all means for the average worker add up to more comedic material than even the man who created Dilbert can tame. Since Dilbert was first syndicated in 1989, Adams has built a following that would be the envy of any corporate sales and marketing team. His work not only generates howls from readers as they rush to plaster it on lunch-room refrigerators and scan it into interoffice e-mails, it has those same fans reading about "their" workplaces every Sunday in a multiple-panel, color format. And that's what this treasury, The Collected Dilbert Sundays, collects for the first time-all the colorful Sunday cartoons of the past five years! This 16th collection published by Andrews McMeel Publishing offers yet another glimpse into the zany life of Dilbert, Dogbert, Ratbert, and the rest of the crazy cube crew through the masterpiece Sunday comics. Here's even more of the great Adams's irony, sarcasm, and satire that so many have come to depend upon to cope with the corporate workplace. Many of this collection's Sunday cartoons have never before appeared in color. A great number will be new even to loyal Dilbert followers. But all of them, without fail, will include that trademark humor that has made Adams and his office-bound alter ego icons of the popular American scene. Dilbert, in fact, has grown far beyond its original place on newspaper pages. The strip and its characters have translated to the Dilbert television show on UPN, calendars, cards, watches, balloons, and even Dilberitos, Adams's recent real-life push to create a nutritious food. All this points to the strength, appeal, and empathetic tone that the Dilbert phenomenon represents. The Collected Dilbert Sundays humorously continues the tradition of poking fun at the world of business from which we all seek to temporarily escape.Bank

These are funny strips, as is usual for Scott Adams and "Dilbert". I dock it a star because some of these strips have appeared in previous books, but many have not.

This book has five years worth of Sunday comics, bursting with wildly funny office humor. In my opinion, the Dilbert Sunday comics may be the best of Scott Adams's work. From Dogbert and Wally's sarcasm to the boss's stupidity, it all balances out with perfectly hysterical comics.

#16 of a series of Dilbert Books; this 224 page paperback book contains all the Sunday comics strips from 1995 to 1999. All the comics in this book are in color. If you want all the Dilbert Sunday comics in one book, this is it. Nice compilation.

4 out of 5 stars Decent book of quotes.......2007-05-15

The whole book consists of quotes from Barkley grouped by category, such as race, basketball, Phoenix, etc... I guess the other person who wrote a review is not a fan of Barkley, but this book contains some funny and witty quotes that show Barkley's strong opinions about various issues, people, etc.. If you enjoy watching Barkley on TNT I don't see why you wouldn't like this book.

                    1 out of 5 stars Don't bother.......2006-02-22

If you try to read this book ( I could not ) You will know why you can buy it for a penny. And that may be over charging.

                    Book Description

Rolling Stone, Entertainment Weekly, Elle, Ebert & Roeper, and more rave about this "corrosively sarcastic comedy [that] packs an emotional wallop similar to The Catcher in the Rye and The Graduate" (Stephen Holden, The New York Times)—marking the debut of Burr Steers, nephew of Gore Vidal, in this new United Artists release. The cast includes Kieran Culkin, Claire Danes, Jeff Goldblum, Jared Harris, Amanda Peet, Ryan Phillippe, Bill Pullman, and Susan Sarandon. 22 b/w photos.

3 out of 5 stars Discover the meaning of life... or whatever........2004-04-29

"Igby Goes Down" is the sort of first movie that most directors dream of -- cast of stars (Claire Danes, Susan Sarandon, Ryan Phillipe), sharp polished story, and just enough surreality to keep it from being dull. This warped coming-of-age tale is shown in its original screenplay format here.

Igby has flunked out of virtually every prep school his elite, rich family has sent him to. Now he's being sent to military school -- but he has no intention of staying. So he flees to the heart of New York, living in the loft where his godfather's mistress lives and hanging around with a beautiful college bohemian called Sookie. But Igby's life begins to unravel when his secret is found out, and Sookie falls in love with his brother.

Burr Steers certainly had a good thing going when he wrote "Igby Goes Down." It's a bit hard to follow if you haven't watched the film, since the movie has only a vague sort of plot. But Steers keeps it interesting with lots of witty dialogue and intricate details (he even describes what kind of shirt Sookie should wear in one scene). It's hard to believe that this was his first screenplay -- the end result is that polished.

That isn't to say that the screenplay really comes alive by itself. Without the vibrant sullenness of Kieran Culkin, Igby seems a lot less interesting and sympathetic, and Ollie seems much less cold without Ryan Phillipe's deadpan performance. And there are some scenes (like a freakish dream Igby has about Mimi) that never made it to the screen.

Adding to the interest is a series of black-and-white stills from the movie, and some production notes at the back. The notes include the origins of "Igby Goes Down," information on Steers, and what the actors have to say about their characters. It makes for interesting reading.

Lovers of teen rebels will probably like "Igby Goes Down," and people who loved the film will enjoy getting a behind-the-scenes look at the screenplay and production.

Nice movie. This book has the script (118 pages), a few pages of black and white stills, and the production notes. There's also a two page intro by the film's writer/director, to tell you what it's about, in case you don't get it.

This book is set in 2024. Odom does a great job of making a plausible (if somewhat dark) future. In fact, the biggest problem I have with Odom is that there aren't enough books out there with his name on them. His future is technology rich, and a little bit anarchic. In this book, a group called the F.R.E.E.Lancers (a private company that does security work for the government of the Great Lakes Authority) sets out to remove a mercenary dictator from Melaka (a.k.a. Malaysia). If you like a little blood, a little violence, a little conscience sprinkled in here and there, and a believable plot, give this books a try.

5 out of 5 stars Everything as the title suggests...very good!!.......2007-01-11

This is an excellent book on XI, and I am not sure what the other reviewers where expecting from this book. I can agree that sometimes the language in the books a little difficult to understand, but that would not stop me from recommending this book to other XI users. Author provides an in-depth analysis for each component in XI. Here is how the book is organized:

Chapter 1 and 2 are essential for understanding all subsequent chapters, fundamentals of XI are explained here. Chapters 3 through 5 concentrate on design and development with SAP XI independently of specific system landscape. Chapter 6 summarizes everything discussed in previous chapters: It describes how you can configure the cross-system process for a specific system landscape, based on the developments made at the logical level. The order in which the topics are addressed reflects the chronological order of the corresponding steps in the SAP XI integration project. Chapter 7, which deals with SAP XI runtime, could be read concurrently with all other chapters. Chapter 8 completes the first part of the book with its description of the cross -component BPM, which marks the transition from stateless to stateful communication.

To illustrate how SP XI is applied in a business context, the second part of the book examines two customer scenarios that have been realized with SAP XI. Chapter 9 describes how cross-component BPM is used as part of an XI scenario at the Linde Group. Chapter 10 shows how the B2B features of SAP XI help connect a CRM system to an electronic marketplace over the Internet.

2 out of 5 stars Very cryptic - Tough to understand.......2006-12-13

It is expected that the chapters 1 & 2 be read before going ahead with any other chapters. It would have helped the readers if these two chapters were presented in a simpler way. May be the blame goes to the translation.

Seems like this book is for those who already have good understanding of XI or who have worked on XI before.

2 out of 5 stars Good high level but not technical.......2006-07-27

This was a very difficult book to read because it is so incredibly dry, like many other SAP Press books.

It provides an excellent overview of SAP XI, and explains the architecture very well. It also gives very good business examples. Unfortunately, I was looking for something much more technical, and this was not detailed enough for me. I had much better luck figuring out how to use XI on my own rather than reading this book.

Perhaps I just had the wrong idea as to what sort of a book this was.

4 out of 5 stars shows in part why JMX failed.......2006-06-26

The book explains how a programmer might use the SAP API for Exchange. There is much detail provided by SAP, with additional explanations given by the book's authors. For example, we see that the Mapping Editor can be used to provide a graphical view of an XML document. Though the graphics are somewhat constrained if you have a very long document.

Messaging is an important part of EI. We are shown how to exchange messages. This EI aspect can also be hooked up to a Java Message Service. Where here, messaging is not email, in general. But data packets that might be used by external Web Services.

The book shows inadvertantly why JMX proved so useless in practise. EI offers management control functionality for SAP processes that is equivalent to what JMX once promised for controlling distributed java applications. Alas, JMX was too general. Whereas EI gives specific control hooks into an already well accepted and popular SAP package.
