Book Description
Since he first came to public attention in the 1970s, Richard Hell has made a spectacular if specialized reputation for himself in every conceivable medium--from music, painting, and photography, to fashion, design, and writing. A man with a vision, Hell was the Prophet of Punk: the originator of the spiked haircut; ripped, drawn-on, safety-pinned clothes; and the seminal punk anthems Love Comes in Sputs and (I Belong to the) Blank Generation.
For the last two decades Hell's work has appeared steadily in the widest range of media: poems and notebooks in literary magazines and small-press books; essays in periodicals from Spin to GQ to The Portable Lower East Side; song lyrics in CD booklets; as well as photos, drawings, and paintings on the walls of small New York galleries.
On the pages of Hot and Cold, Hell's multifarious work is finally gathered under one cover. The book is less a collection or an anthology, and more an astonishing cohesion of the various media that ink on paper can comprise. Just like old times, Hell will blow your mind.

recommended to the adventurous reader.......2002-09-26
Richard Hell's writing has the effect of stopping me dead in my tracks after every third sentence or so, to accommodate some new point of view, or hallucinatory image, or just to laugh at the sheer madness of it. I particularly enjoyed the open-hearted, wickedly truthful eulogies (of Johnny Thunders, and other fallen comrades ), the journal entries, and ~ the song lyrics are all here as well. Along with his full-length novel 'Go Now', this is essential Hell - and the drawings and photos are a bonus(and, probably ensure that you won't be finding a copy at the county library!).

"OUT OF THE MOUTHS OF BABES........".......2005-06-30
H. Jackson Brown's phenomenal bestseller, "Life's Little Instruction Book" was steady on the New York Times list for over two years. A compilation of some 500 simple but true suggestions for a happy and satisfying life, the small volume sold more than 6 million copies.
Then, Brown turned his attention to the observations of children, ages four to 17, or "The Peanut Butter Gang." Consider, "Guests is just another word for cleaning. Chanelle, Age 12." Or, "If your sister hits you, don't hit her back. Parents always catch the second person. Michael, Age 10."
In addition to children's sayings, the slim volume is decorated with colorful drawings and includes pertinent quotations from the likes of Harry S. Truman and Aristotle.
"Wit and Wisdom from the Peanut Butter Gang" will bring smiles of recognition from parents and grandparents alike. It simply proves what we've always said, "Out of the mouths of babes....."

Peanut Butter for the soul.......2002-11-29
I liked this harmless collection of misguided children's ramblings, but I think we heard far too much from Crunchy. I would have liked to have heard some more from Smooth, and I noticed, with alarm, that in this edition there were no submissions from Smooth with Chocolate Whirls.
Great fun, charming, and absolutely hilarious at times!.......2001-11-08
Two thumbs up for the Peanut Butter Gang! This book is both truthful and wise, and it could only come from the innocent hearts and minds of children. Some of the quotes are hilarious, and some are incredibly touching. I'd recommend this book to anyone needing a smile or even just a quick laugh now and again.
Out of the mouths of babes.......2001-02-05
As one who is always looking for insightful books and spiritual quotations, I happened upon the Peanut Butter Gang and was truly delighted. Each quote comes from the heart of those who are not yet jaded and hopefully, will never be. This book is a great reminder that life is much easier to focus on in simplistic tones. A true joy, this is one title I plan on buying for all of my friends and family.
A truly heartwarming collection of wisdom from kids.......1997-07-24
There isn't anyone who will not find something to relate to in this collection of "worldly wisdom" from kids----as you read, you will say out loud, "that is SO true!!" Some words are hilarious, some are tender--be prepared to enjoy them all

Be Heard Now! Lee Glickstein

Customer Reviews:
Becoming a Great Speaker.......2004-03-20
I have been speaking professionally for 3 years. Prior to that, I spent years speaking in Toastmasters and other non-paid forums. I have read numerous books on public speaking, but by far my favorite is Lee Glickstein's Be Heard Now! The tape complement's the book very well.
Once you get beyond the nuts and bolts of public speaking, you are ready for learning the art of this craft. Lee Glickstein takes you to there. Although there are a few nuts and bolts (he gives what I think is the best formula for structuring a speech, especially how to make your opening remarks), most of the book goes to the subtleties of great speaking-building rapport with your audience. He also makes the profound observation that rapport comes more in the silence between spoken words than the words themselves. You can read the connection in the eyes of your audience. Lee Glickstein shows you how. Finally, he talks about the concept of "Speaking Circles" - similar to Toastmasters in some ways but with an even more of a supportive slant.
This book and tape can take you from being a good speaker to a great one.
Too much waffle, not enough meat!.......2000-01-30
Did I listen to a different tape from the one that most listeners awarded five stars? I found it full of new age waffle that certainly wouldn't help me prepare a speech. I did find a few useful tips on tape 2, but it was a long time to wait!
Great help for turning fear into fuel for public speaking........1999-05-21
This tape augments Glickstein's book and provides a comprehensive roadmap for turning fear into a joyful strengh for those who want to be more effective in communicating - whether to small groups or to large audiences. He clues you in to the power of your own essence when you use it to to both receive and give as you interact with the audience. Also great tips on structuring your talk.
Lose the fear of public speaking!.......1999-05-13
Lee Glickstein offers a unique approach to public speaking. No more canned, "polished" acts in front of a group! Who likes to memorize, anyway?? BE HEARD NOW involves becoming more connected to your audience, which in turn creates an authentic, fresh message each and every time you speak to a group. Yes, there are preparations to be made before you speak but it doesn't work to copy someone else's style or words. The idea in this book is to bring out your own creative, genuine style when you speak. And, by weaving personal stories and anecdotes from your own life into a message you truly feel compelled to talk about, you can draw rapt attention from your audience. It's a wonderful, refreshing approach to speaking from the heart. I loved this audio tape. I've listened to it a dozen times. I used the techniques in a recent promotional opportunity at work and was chosen hands above the other candidates. It works!
Terrific Tape.......1999-05-12
This tape is a wonderful work that will help you connect with your audience. You might find some of the techniques far removed from the beaten path of traditional speech coaches, and that's okay. Lee Glickstein has figured out how to really build a personal bond with audiences that transcends the traditional rules of thumb. Read the book. Listen to the tape. You'll be amazed with the results.

Book Description
Music isn't something students just learn about by reading or sitting in lecture--they also have to able to compose it, play it, and listen to it with a trained ear. Music First! takes a hands-on approach to learning the fundamentals of music theory and basic composition.
Customer Reviews:
One of the better texts for music fundamentals..........2007-05-22
I've tried a few texts for teaching music fundamentals to non-music majors and this is one of the better books. I really like that the book starts with the keyboard as a visual representation of music theory. The book could use updated music excerpts/examples. Also- the fact that students tear out workbook pages renders the book invalid for buyback programs. A separate workbook would be a much better option for college use.
Excellent approach.......2005-10-28
Gary White takes a different approach to learning the study of music, one which should serve as a model for other books of this type. Much more focus is pute on interaction and music-making (i.e., active, rather than passive learning). This can be used independently of a classroom experience, though it is intended for that situation, and works better when there is a teacher to clarify notational issues.

Book Description
The forces that shape America's most powerful consumer agency
Because of the importance of what it regulates, the FDA comes under tremendous political, industry, and consumer pressure. But the pressure goes far beyond the ordinary lobbying of Washington trade groups. Its mandate-one quarter of the national economy-brings the FDA into the middle of some of the most important and contentious issues of modern society. From "designer" babies and abortion to the price of prescription drugs and the role of government itself, Inside the FDA takes readers on an intriguing journey into the world of today's most powerful consumer agency.
In a time when companies continue to accuse the FDA of nitpicking and needlessly delaying needed new drugs, and consumers are convinced that the agency bends to industry pressure by rushing unsafe drugs to market, Inside the FDA digs deep to reveal the truth. Through scores of interviews and real-world stories, Hawthorne also shows how and why the agency makes some of its most controversial decisions as well as how its recent reaction to certain issues-including the revolutionary cancer drug Erbitux, stem cell research, and bioengineering of food-may jeopardize its ability to keep up with future scientific developments.
Inside the FDA takes a closer look at the practices, people, and politics of this crucial watchdog in light of the competing pressures and trends of modern society, revealing what the FDA is supposed to do, what it actually does-and fails to do-who it influences, and how it could better fulfill its mandate. The decisions that the FDA makes are literally life and death. Inside the FDA provides a sophisticated account of how this vitally important agency struggles to balance bureaucracy and politics with its overriding mission to promote the country's health.
Fran Hawthorne (New York, NY) is a senior contributing editor of Institutional Investor and has connections deep within the business and finance communities. Hawthorne has been covering healthcare and business for more than twenty years for such publications as Fortune, BusinessWeek, and Crain's New York Business. She is the author of The Merck Druggernaut (cloth: 0-471-22878-8; paper: 0-471-67906-2).

Customer Reviews:
Highly Informative (and Neutral) Look at the FDA.......2007-08-08
Democrats want more Big Pharma regulation and consumer protection. Republicans want to protect Big Pharma's profits. The tobacco and diet supplement industries want to be left the hell alone. And consumers want miracle drugs for free. Somehow, some way, the FDA navigates the minefields of the food and drug industries every day and tries to base its decisions on science. While some authors take cracks at the FDA because of a political agenda, Fran Hawthorne remains neutral and thus provides the most level-headed look at the FDA that's on the shelves. While the reading is pretty dense, this is a book that every concerned citizen needs to read.
If you want to know about an administration that controls a third of our economy, this is the first step........2007-08-03
If you know nothing of the FDA, than this will blow your mind. By the time you are through half the book you will be considered an expert on the subject by all your friends.
Not one of the more exciting reads, but extremely informative. Not just about what you might think it is about, but much much more. This book will give a clearer view of where we all live.
Interesting look at an important regulatory body.......2006-12-20
For those who have ever wondered how the FDA makes decisions and how those decisions effect companies this is a great starting point. Hawthorne takes an objective stance towards the FDA and shows their faults along with the positives. She tracks several instances of FDA oversight and gives their results. I think the part that tracks the companies progress through the FDA's is the most instructive. One of my fields of study was health and pharmaceutical economics and this was a great way to start learning about the FDA.
Fascinating, Informative Look at Food & Drug Administration.......2005-05-28
"Inside the FDA" is a thoughtful, balanced, and well-researched look inside the controversial and troubled Food and Drug Administration. Author Fran Hawthorne is an experienced business journalist and her skills are evident here.
Digging into the FDA's complex and conflicting world, the book provides an informative picture of FDA's bureaucratic, political, and scientific drivers. Ms. Hawthorne does an excellent job of laying out what the FDA is suppose to do, what is really does, and where and why it fails.
It makes for a great read.
Amazing book, although it misses one key insight.......2005-05-07
Far better and more balanced than any book to date on the subject. The book does an amazing job explaining the external forces tugging in all directions at the FDA without those shrill calls for "reform" made by so-called public interests like CSPI or misguided lawmakers like Hinchey out of NY.
The only thing missing from the analysis are the internal forces. FDA attitudes are very much related to the belief system of the staff and the culture fostered by the institution.
If you've ever been on the receiving end of an FDA action, you know the prevailing culture inside the FDA views the entire industry as the police view criminals. The FDA often seems to doubt every iota of data, question every motive and act as if the administrative procedures which insure fairness are somehow boundaries on a power they believe should be limitless. Many parts of the FDA are an "end-justifies-the-means" culture. Staff who don't toe the line and approach industry with all out animosity and suspicion are often suspect themselves of being deficient in intellect and/or integrity.
The book does a bang up job analyzing external forces. If Ms. Hawthorne actually could have gotten inside the front lines at FDA, she would have had all the facts she needed for a superb analysis.
