Book Description
Throughout eight years of existence, La Panader'a served Mexico City as a vibrant non-profit space for exhibitions, residencies, and cultural events involving local and international artists. This retrospective catalogue exists as a collective testimony on the artistic productions and exhibitions that resulted from the space, which was founded in 1994 in a former bakery by local artists Yoshua Okon and Miguel CalderAn. La Panader'a emphasized, by way of its inherent nature, the integration of eclectic marginal practices. Young artists were invited to exhibit video, photography, installation, and performance based works, but the space was also characterized by parties and concerts, reflecting a lifestyle and a social dynamic that opposed a rigid set of paradigms which dictated how art should be. La Panader'a: 1994-2002 is a visual and theoretical digest representative of the national and international art scene, presenting a selection of 60 exhibitions by foreign and Mexican contemporary artists via photographic documentation, a brief descriptive text, and ephemera such as invitations. Six critical texts consider the relevance of the space, while anecdotes from artists and the visiting public pay testimony to it. Dozens and dozens of artists are represented here, including Carlos Amorales, Chris Johanson, Emily Jacir, Francis Als, Gelatin, Kirsten Stoltmann, Las ultrasAnicas, Luis Felipe Ortega, Miguel CalderAn, Minerva Cuevas, Semefo, Shepard Fairy, and Uri Tzaig. The book is accompanied by a CD with music by Silverio.

Book Description
Dressed to Kill puts fashion and style in their rightful place-at the center of the historical stage. Fashion has been a symbol of falling dynasties, rising queens, infamous celebrities, criminals, and movie stars. While critics and moralists through the ages have deemed fashion as essentially frivolous, the deeply subliminal and theatrical power of fashion cannot be denied. Dressed to Kill displays fashion's supreme importance in our cultural memory, almost Proustian in its power to mark notable times and places in history.
An anthropologist's dream source for studying ongoing political, sexual, and social trends, these fashion talismans offer future generations an extended, if quirky, index to past centuries. Who can imagine the 1950s without James Dean's signature black leather jacket? Though never worn in a movie, it became the symbol of rebels everywhere. The topless bathing suit was as headline-making a symbol of new sexual mores as the blue jeans were in the 1960s, both sexy and radical in their androgyny. This dynamic, engaging compilation addresses the way we look, proving that, at least in history's eyes, we are what we wear.
Nan Richardson is an editor, writer, and curator. Co-author of The White T (1996), Louise Dahl-Wolfe (2000), Lillian Bassman (1997), and other books on fashion, she has also curated exhibitions of fashion photography at FIT New York, The Center for Creative Photography, Tucson, and other museums. Richardson lives in New York with her husband Andrew Karsch and two children.
Jennifer Dillon is a playwright, screenwriter, and columnist. She lives in New York City.

Book Description
Pat Oliphant's razor-sharp editorial cartoons have skewered the denizens of Congress for more than 25 years. Now, in this companion volume to an exhibit of his work, he is honored for his art in the very repository for that illustrious body: The Library of Congress. Oliphant's Anthem will catalog the 60 drawings, sculptures, and various art media that will be exhibited as a special tribute in March of 1998 in the Library of Congress. Interviews with the artist througout the book will highlight his thoughts, concerns, and considerations as he has created this impressive body of work.
Customer Reviews:
The art and science of "stirring up the animals" .......2005-09-30
Pat Oliphant is one of my favorite political cartoonists and this is among the best of several collections of his work. What to say? Oliphant's Anthem is the companion volume to an exhibition at the Library of Congress (in 1998) which commemorated his art. It provides graphic and compelling illustrations of his reactions to a period which extends from the Viet Nam War until the Clinton administration. The collection includes 60 drawings, sculptures, and various art media which have been added to the Library's permanent collection. In the Preface, James H. Billington observes that the Library of Congress is pleased "to add Pat Oliphant's name to the pantheon of great political artists represented in our holdings and proud to contribute, through this exhibition and publication, new information about a creator whose ideas, accomplishments, and art will certainly endure." Credit Sara Day with gathering and then editing the material provided in this volume.
That said, and with all due respect to those who praise Oliphant's art, it requires no explication. It speaks for itself and does so with a visual power and eloquence which I (at least) am unable to describe. So, what would be appropriate to share in a brief commentary such as this? First, that Oliphant's best work immediately seizes one's attention (as does Picasso's Guernica and Munch's The Scream) and the viewer either "gets it" or doesn't. Also, he captures in each drawing and in each sculpture the essence of his subject (as he perceives it) and challenges those who view it to absorb and digest the implications of what he offers. Finally, he communicates his sense of rage in response to what he views as (for lack of a better term) "man's inhumanity to man." Even as he expresses anger, dismay, frustration, and impatience, he never indicates that he has lost all hope that various inhumanities can be eliminated while insisting that none should be tolerated.
Of special interest to me is Harry Katz's interview of Oliphant on pages 13-78, accompanied by relevant illustrations with brief explanations. Oliphant responses to questions which readers such as I would probably ask if given the opportunity. For example, this brief excerpt quoted verbatim:
"Katz: So you were aware pretty early on that cartooning didn't get the respect that it deserved for the quality of work that it represented.
"Oliphant: Yes, not enough anyway. David Low did more for the art than anybody in this century, I think. Of course there've been others, but his penmanship and his brushwork, and his sense of draftsmanship were just so well advanced. And of course you need to believe in something when you're doing this business.
"Katz: What did you believe in at that time? [i.e. late-1970s] What was behind the passion? Did you feel in your gut that there was a tradition you wanted to be part of?
"Oliphant: Yes. And I don't think there's such a thing as a good conservative cartoonist. I think you have to have a fire in the gut to do it, and that doesn't come from being a conservative. You have to, by necessity, be a liberal. Otherwise you don't get into cartooning. You go and be a lawyer, or a stockbroker. You're not gonna sit there complacently and let things happen around you or to you. It's a way of being able to participate and maybe influence. Any cartoonist who rates himself or herself as a conservative will inevitably turn out cartoons which look like book illustrations -- all very competent, but with no fire or heart."
Oliphant never seems to lose what Rafael Sabatini says of Andre Moreau in the novel Scaramouche: "He was born with the gift of laughter and a sense that the world is mad." One of my personal favorites portrays President Ronald Reagan as he was about to launch his campaign for a second term. Oliphant created a whimsical illustration of him ("There he goes again," page 40) wearing a top hat and tails and carrying a cane, leaping from one ice floe to another. The caption refers to a favorite Reagan putdown in presidential campaign debates as well as to his reputation as the "Teflon president."
Most of his cartoons leave no doubt whatsoever as to what his opinion is of the given subject . The cartoon for which Oliphant received a Pulitzer Prize in 1966 is an indictment of the Viet Nam War. It portrays Ho Chi Minh, carrying a dead Viet Cong in his arms, proudly announcing "They won't get us to the conference table...will they?" (page 39) Another cartoon ("Remember Tiananmen Square," page 46) expresses Oliphant's contempt for totalitarianism's suppression of individual freedom in China.
Those who share my high regard for this volume are urged to check out other collections of Oliphant's editorial cartoons as well as Attack of the Political Cartoonists which provides representative selections from almost 150 of his contemporaries. They and we are in Oliphant's substantial debt, especially as frustration with government leaders throughout the world is, if anything, greater now than ever before. When it comes to (in his words) "stirring up the animals," no one has done it better.

Product Description
Before she was a glamorous actress, before she was a war-time pin-up star, even before she was Carole Landis, she was Frances Lillian Ridste, an insecure young girl from Wisconsin. She was strikingly beautiful, talented, and on her way to becoming a movie star, yet she spent her entire life searching for love. Though she appeared in more than 60 films during her short career, Landis was better known for her extraordinary beauty and many romantic relationships than for her acting or comedic timing. Like many starlets of the time, Landis worked her way up from uncredited bit parts (and according to rumors, from the casting couch) to leading roles in such films as Topper Returns (1940) and My Gal Sal (1942) over the course of her 11-year career. She spent more time visiting troops during World War IItraveling hundreds of thousands of miles and coming near death twicethan any other Hollywood star. Despite her seemingly glamorous and carefree life, Landis was unable to build a lasting relationship, a fact that contributed to her suicide at 29. This work examines Landiss life and career in Hollywood, focusing on how her movie career affected her short, unhappy life.
Customer Reviews:
Carole Is A Goddess.......2007-04-13
I adore Carole Landis! She was an actress, a pin-up, a wife (four times), a victim, an American hero, and now she is a legend. This is the one book all Carole Landis fans must buy. It is simply the only book where you will get Carole's full life story. Carole's life was a tragedy but you will be amazed at how much she accomplished in 29 years. I can't believe it took this long for someone to write a book about her. The author is obviously a fan of Carole because he tells her story in an honest yet sympathetic way. My one complaint is that a lot of the photos are labeled wrong (for example photos from 1940's are labeled as being from the 1930's). This really isn't such a big deal especially considering how many gorgeous photos are in the book. The war candids are priceless! If you know someone who loves classic films give them this book and I guarantee they will fall in love with Carole too :-)
The Only Book We Have On Her.......2007-04-03
This book was better than's Fleming's book about Mannix and Strickling. But it wasn't great. But it's the only book we have about Carole, and I am glad he wrote it. The author does seem to want to make Carole into someone she wasn't necessarily. She wasn't a great actress and she didn't have very good movie roles. And she probably was a bit slutty. She is better known for the photo of her laying in the bathroom than her movie career. That's just how it is. I went to the library and read the newspaper reports of her funeral service because what Fleming says in the book was just too much! But much of it did seem true, but it seems he over exaggerated bits and pieces. He makes it sound more like Valentino's funeral and I don't think it was quite like that. In my own reseach, Hollywood hadn't had a "good" funeral in several years, so I guess they decided to make Carole's their occasion. I do hope his book on Wallace Reid is better than these last two, as I am anxious to read about him too.
Carole Landis was a true star: both woman and actress........2005-12-18
I only gave this book 4 stars because the beginning chapter was so hard to keep reading. However, it really became great and I couldn't put it down after the first 40 pages. E.J. Fleming has to be thanked for being so thorough as to minute details of Carole's life. There hasn't been a book written on her yet until this one, and I have to say, I was not disappointed and feel like I know her as a person and as an actress. I cried at the end, well sobbed, and thats what made me make the time to write a review. Bravo to the writer! He really touched my heart and I now want to re-watch every Landis film I can find. And I want to read Lilli Palmers' books and Rex Harrisons' bio (even though I hate him for not loving Carole the way he should have so we could still have her around).
I'm giving it 5 stars.......2005-12-08
The first reaction you have when you see the cover is "Wow...Carole Landis was a real knockout". Then you start reading and you realize that her amazing beauty never brought her a bit of happiness. I don't think you could come up with a more appropriate title for Carole biography. Her life was tragic. One of the main themes of this bio is that she kept trying. She tried to be a great actress, she tried to find true love, she even tried to save the world, but in the end she could not save herself from the demons that haunted her. The most tragic part of Carole's story is how she has been forgotten today. Buy more than one copy if you can and give it to a friend.
Thanks for writing a biography about Carole Landis.......2005-11-10
I cannot begin to express how ecstatic I am that there is finally a biography about Carole Landis. I have been a fan of Carole for the longest time but there is so little information about her out there :-( Most of what I knew about her I had read on the Internet. All I can say after reading Carole Landis: A Tragic Life In Hollywood is that Carole was wonderful, wonderful, wonderful! I always knew she was a good person as well as a gifted performer. Whenever I mention Carole's name no one know who I am talking about. I am praying that more people will discover her now.

Book Description
Management is an organized body of knowledge. "This book," in Peter Drucker'swords, "tries to equip the manager with the understanding, the thinking, the knowledge and the skills for today'sand also tomorrow's jobs." This management classic has been developed and tested during more than thirty years of teaching management in universities, in executive programs and seminars and through the author's close work with managers as a consultant for large and small businesses, government agencies, hospitals and schools. Drucker discusses the tools and techniques of successful management practice that have been proven effective, and he makes them meaningful and easily accessible.
Customer Reviews:
Great content, bad material.......2007-08-28
I'll give 5 stars for the content of the book, but why is it so small in dimentions and so THICK. I don't understand why it was made this way. Along with this book, I have ordered four more Drucker books and the paper quality of all of them is AWFUL.
The original and best work on corporate strategy.......2006-08-27
This is a heavyweight tome with clear insight. Every manager should read this.
For example, Drucker writes what strategy planning is not:
a box of tricks;
nor modelling;
nor forecasting;
nor masterminding the future.
Methodically, he explains what it is: Analytical thinking & commitment of resources to action.
Drucker is famous for his simple questions which resonated across the corporate world for 50 years, and was especially influential with Jack Welch at GE.
In this book Drucker poses these questions as the framework for creating a business strategy:
*What is our business?
*What will it be?
*What should it be?
...And the killer: *If we were not committed to this today, would we go into it?
Written in '73. Valid today.
worth every penny and time spent.......2006-03-08
this book is just great. i find it a straightforward and no frills book. yet reading it makes business interesting and encouraging. a truly indispensable reference and guide to management, better than any textbook i have come across in terms of giving clarity to the big picture. for that i have huge respect and admiration for peter drucker.
peter drucker is just "the man" in management in my book.
WOW.......2002-03-07
This is the book on how to make a business WORK! I am president of a small company and immediately took the ideas and practices out of this book and applied them to great success. This is not a quick read, and every item will not pertain to each individual person, but the observations presented explained a huge number of obstacles I was facing. If you are trying to manage any form of modern organization, buy this book and spend the time reading it. It made me a huge Drucker fan.
A monumental treatise on management and its functions!!!.......1999-10-23
This book is only one of its kind! Written well over years ago, even today it is of utmost relevance to all businesses. Recently we have come across so many "management gurus" who propogate different theories which ordinary business managers cannot relate to. One is never sure what the assumptions have been in such studies, nor does one know the extent of their applicability to the ordinary business.
BUT WITH PETER DRUCKER, YOU ARE ALWAYS SURE!!!
Go for this book if you want to have a real insight into the challenges a company faces and the right questions to ask to overcome those. An absolute must read for anyone serious about business management!
