This is a collection of essays about Chinese impressions of America over the last 150 years. We know what Americans thought of the Chinese when they first arrived -- this is a rare opportunity to learn what the Chinese thought of Americans. Topics include helpful suggestions concerning American ettiquite, essays on American women, black Americans, and the various problems in America (too much traffic, excessive consumption, etc.). This book will allow the American reader to examine his/her own society from a different perspective.

Fifty issues--collected into 15 volumes that total 2,000 pages--the Hernandez brothers' Love and Rockets is an enormous achievement that helped to create a new audience for comics. Notable for their strong female characters and their focus on relationships, rather than on traditional comic-book 'action', the stories collected in this volume, and the rest of the series, show how the comic format can be used to create characters and situations as detailed and compelling as in any novel.
Reviewers have compared Gilbert Hernandez's work--set in the fictional Latin American town of Palomar--with that of Gabriel Garcia Marquez and Robert Altman. Reading his brother Jaime's work--most of which focuses on a group of Southern California Mexican American women--is like reading Tolstoy, if only Tolstoy had written about twenty-something punk girls. Love and Rockets has certainly earned its legendary reputation among the comic-book cognoscenti, and deserves to be read by an even wider audience. Welcome to the world of Los Bros Hernandez.

uninformed soapboxing posing as writing.......2001-05-29
Gilbert Hernandez, who certainly is not without some talent, became ever more lazy with his artwork as Love and Rockets progressed, perhaps realizing that it was impossible to compete with the visual brilliance of his brother. He seemingly tried to compensate by becoming more "writerly" with his little fictions, and ended up creating in Poison River and especially this awful volume just the sort of stilted, derivative hash one would expect of a half-educated adolescent with an interest in puck rock and comic books. There is nothing worse than some guy trying to lecture on subjects he doesn't understand in the least (this guy thinks on the level of someone who slept through high school, never attended college and then read a book or two about politics and thought it made him a philospher) and disguising it in the form of a badly drawn and truly horribly written comic book. It is sad to see his talent go mostly to waste; he could have been a decent middleweight cover designer or children's book illustrator if he hadn't imagined that he could write.
A low point for Beto..........2000-04-12
One of my least favorite of these 15 incredible volumes -- why? Basically, there's a fine line between letting your characters have strong opinions and proselytizing through your characters -- in LOVE & ROCKETS X, Senor Hernandez seems (unfortunately) rather too snug on the latter side of that boundary, and the work suffers for it. The diversity of the characters seems incredibly forced here -- he continually falls back on an extremely limited lexicon of cliches and racial stereotypes, the contrary result of which tends to be the obscuring and confounding of GH's own aims (namely, a noble, active tolerance and appreciation of the HUMAN, as opposed to the Caucasian or Latino or African-American or Gay/Lesbian, ad nauseum) -- but a little of that goes a very long way (likewise for overlong sociological Iggy Pop diatribes and the sort of musicological conversational asides which seem more like a vehicle for GH to brag about his record collection than anything else) and it times this book gets so supersaccharined with such unnecessities I had to restrain myself from hurling. The "All the World's Problems Would Be Solved If We'd All Just Embrace Our Inherent Bisexuality (Not To Mention the Nearest Available Member of Your Own Gender, Though Preferably One of a Different Race Just To Make Absolutely Certain That Beto Hernandez's Message Is Not Lost On Anyone) and Flesh Out Our Record Collections With Old Germs 45s, etc." message, presented with all the subtlety of a Chick tract, ultimately estranges (read: nauseates) the reader. Crosby, Stills and Nash la-la-ing "Love The One You're With" elicits a similar reaction out of me as this book -- when the Hernandez's stuff works, it really works; but when it doesn't (as here it does not), it's as smarmily insufferable as being forced to watch "The Big Chill" alongside some overtalkative person who counts it among her top ten favorite films of all time...
Secondly, it seemed to me, reading this particular story, that something which ought to have been intrinsic to the story seemed instead to have been lost on the artist: i.e., the fact that the set of unspoken rules which govern human relationships (govern them as the moon governs the tides) is not the same set in Palomar and in Los Angeles. And this should have been central to Riri and Maricela's running-away experience, but was hardly explored (that was to be left up to Steve Erickson, who copped/altered/fleshed out similar chemistries in his second novel "Rubicon Beach"). But -- more pertinently -- the story falls flat on its (admittedly quite attractive) face for the same reasons. Los Angeles ain't Palomar. Los Angeles is so apalomaric (sorry) it might as well be on another planet. I sort of got the feeling that he was jumping into brother Jaime's territory. Later work based around the LA-Palomar pipeline (I'm thinking specifially of the unbelievable "Luba Conquers the World" and of last year's "New Love" series) juggles all of these themes, characters, plots and conflicts admirably and successfully, so I imagine Gilbert eventually found his way through to the same clarified butter as the sorely missed Mr. Coltrane. But "Love and Rockets X" seems more to represent a sort of learning-through-mistakes...

Inaccurate and Dangerous.......2007-03-30
For a former accounting professor, Masters gets the numbers all wrong in this book. Using the logic in this book, Masters gets up to a 43% long-term annual return on real estate investments. In CH5 where Masters describes the source of real estate profits, the author includes paydown of a mortgage loans principal as one of the sources. In fact principle payments increase the amount invested in the property and reduces the return rather than increases it. This is just where the errors begin.
Masters targets this book at neophyte small investers. My advice is that neophytes who don't have a sound understanding of finance should stay far away from this book. For anyone else it's buyer beware.
Slow start with a good end.......2007-03-08
This book read a bit like a text book, probably because the author has a teaching background. I almost put the book down after the first couple of chapters, and would have if it was a library book and not a purchased book. I am very glad I did not! There was excellent information in this book which reinforced what I had learned and even built upon it.
Disappointing: out-dated and not comprehensive.......2006-02-27
While Mr. Masters does make several good points, most of the information in this book could apply to any real estate investment: whether it be residential or commercial even though the title of this book clearly makes it appear that this book will focus on commercial properties, which it does not.
Mr. Masters starts the book by making a quick comparison between real estate and other investments, such as holding your money in cash, saving accounts, securities, collectibles, and precious metals. He gives the advantages and disadvantages of each: namely, liquidity versus returns. Now, we get into the meat of the subject matter. First, Mr. Masters argues that an investor should own their own primary residence and have 12 months of expenses in the bank before venturing to invest in commercial real estate: conversative, but good enough advice. He gives comparisons between different commercial properties you can invest into, with garden apartment complexes and anchored shopping centers getting his nod as the best investment choices for a real estate novice. He argues that novice investors should form investment clubs to invest in real estate together; however, he gives very little advice as how to hold title and what form of ownership the group should take. I understand that people must consult with tax and legal professionals to see what best matches their situation, but it would have been nice to have Mr. Masters elaborate on this since its a key argument of his book.
To find property, Mr. Masters tells the aspiring investor to work with a knowlegable broker and not purchase a property with a cash-on-cash return or a cap-rate under 8-10%. While I agree its very important to buy properties with positive cash-flow, this is one of my biggest issues with this book: while in theory it'd be great to skip every property that offers lower returns, in today's market its virtually impossible in most top markets to find properties with those types of returns. If you follow the advice of the author, it will now be impossible to purcahse most investment opportunities as he does not leave room for exceptions in his rule. He also ignores other calculations and never shows how to construct an APOD, which really dates this book. There is no mention of an IRR or projected cash-flows. He also never says to independently confirm the income and expense figures given by the seller even though 9 times out 10 the cap-rate the seller gives on a property is calculated off of proforma numbers that are not aligned with market realities. I can sum up his financing section in a single sentence: find a good mortgage broker to find you a good rate on a fixed, 15-30 year mortgage. And to manage your property? Use a professional management company and watch them for a year to see how they do it, then you can consider doing it on your own. He gives very little helpful advice on what to look for in a management company, mortgage broker, or real estate broker as well.
Tax information is included relegated to an appendix, yet it doesn't even touch on a 1031 tax-deferred exchange and tax implications of real estate investments are hardly touched upon, and when they are, they're no longer applicable as tax laws have changed. I don't remember reading anything about what will effect the basis of your property, how to calculate cash-flow after taxes, or even more than a few quick words about depreciation!
For someone who has purchased their own home or has even a little bit of real estate knowledge, this book has little pratical use -- the only difference between this book and better, cheaper books that I've read is the author's limited information on investment clubs. He even gives poor advice on finding information online: he tells the reader to go online and type in a few keywords on a search engine, not realizing that the reader will find plenty of advertisers and unscrupulous companies in the results.
For anyone who's interested in investing in real estate, I recommend the first thing they learn is how to evaluate properties so they know what to look for in an investment opportunity. To that extent, I highly recommend Frank Gallinelli's "What Every Real Estate Investor Needs to Know About Cash Flow and 36 Other Key Financial Measures", a far-superior, more-practical, and less expensive book.

its a good book but very basic. i was looking for something more detailed and was a disappointed, but if you know nothing about real estate, it'll give u a good understanding.

My pen name is Big Al. I am also the writer of this book. When you self - publish a book if you don't review and promote it, then no one will. Which is what I am doing now. I have read dozens of investment books and they all ignore the almost unknown world of small-cap and micro-cap investing. Not to mention my specialty of penny mining stock investing. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced investor this book is a must read. The stock market can be very complicated, but Fred's forty years of knowledge and experience gives you the insight needed to invest correctly and make big returns on your money. The book is easy to read, a mixture of intellgent writing with humorus anecdotes. I highly recommend this book!
