Book Description
Artist Mark Cooper creates remarkable art with children. Visiting classrooms around the country, he helps children create ambitious art objects—together. From decorated sculptures to billboards against violence to maps of the world, children plan, design, and complete the projects themselves, often tying their art to larger themes. The resulting pieces have been featured in newspapers and displayed in the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, and many other venues.
Wherever Cooper has worked, he has left behind delighted teachers—and not just art teachers—who are inspired and empowered to create similar projects.
Making Art Together will enable all teachers and other adults who work with groups of children to re-create the successes of Cooper's versatile approach. Cooper argues that seeing teachers as master artists, using the insights of contemporary art, and tapping the unique power of collaboration can revolutionize what art can accomplish in schools. And he makes the argument practical with dozens of examples and scores of illustrations. Making Art Together promises to change the way people think about creating art with kids.
"A thought-provoking book, this volume will be a wonderful and useful resource for all parents, teachers and youth leaders. The authors do a tremendous job of making these large-scale projects seem very doable. Even teachers without any art experience or knowledge will come away feeling empowered that they can tackle what is described in this book….This resource explains the power of collaborating with youth while providing wonderful details on brainstorming, funding, making and displaying powerful pieces of art."
—Voices of Youth Advocates, review in the February 2007 issue
Mark Cooper is a professor of art at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and at Boston College. His solo work has been exhibited in prestigious galleries and museums, and his work with kids has received the support of leading foundations and arts organizations.

From birth, Cesare Borgia is surrounded by hellish shadows that threaten to consume him. Damned by his own father, hated by his closest brother, separated from the sister who loves him and driven by the demons of Hell itself, he sets out on a quest for power that threatens to set the world of Renaissance Italy ablaze. Will he find salvation in Michelotto, a mysterious assassin bent on saving Cesare's soul - even if it means slaying his demon-possessed body? Or will all of Italy be seduced by the tragic eyes of the infamous murderer known as Cesare Borgia?
Customer Reviews:
Wickedly Divine.......2006-11-19
In the 4th volume of Higuri's series about Cesare Borgia, starts with speculation about incest between Cesare and Lucrezia, when the siblings reunite. Another female character is also introduced; Sancha D'Aragon, Princess of Naples, wife of Cesare's youngest brother Jofre. Juan Borgia, Duke of Gandia also returns to become commander of the papal army. Juan however is incompetent and Cesare chafes under the restrictions of the cardinal's robes since he wants the job himself. Lucrezia confesses her love to Cesare, but Cesare deceives her by saying he only loves her like a sister. Cesare does this because he has plans for Lucrezia's next marriage that will further his schemes. Higuri illustrates her characters even more wonderfully in this volume, the costumes are definitely better and sexier, and the plot becomes more complex and convoluted as Cesare's schemes are woven skillfully with more poison. Delicious.

Book Description
The redneck lifestyle is exposed through the hilariously antithetical filter of formal Japanese haiku in this collection of original verses. Each of the over 100 wickedly funny poems contains just three lines and 17 syllables, yet together they address the whole spectrum of redneck culture, including RVs, Wal-Mart, beer, Pop-Tarts, pickups, monster trucks, NASCAR, boats, trailers, trailer parks, barns, hunting, shotguns, dogs, Las Vegas, and the lottery.

WWJGD?.......2005-04-09
Mary K. Witte, Redneck Haiku (Santa Monica Press, 2003)
What would Jim Goad do?
That was what I kept thinking as I turned the pages in this small tome. Would the author of the celebrated, reviled Redneck Manifesto be deeply offended, or would he be laughing his ass off?
Probably both.
The worst factor in the writing of American haiku these days, and it affects almost every otherwise-non-poet (and far too many actual poets) who attempts to write haiku, is the slavish devotion to 5-7-5. Pick up a few books on how to write haiku, people. Or a few books of haiku by recognized American masters, or recognized Japanese masters translated by someone worth their skin. 5-7-5 is an upper limit, not an upper AND lower limit. The shorter your haiku, the better. Slavish devotion to 5-7-5 leads to filler. Yes, even in haiku. There's more than one piece here that could have used a few words carved off here and there. (That said, there are some surprisingly excellent pieces as well.)
Now, ask yourself the question: will you feel guilty laughing at stereotypes? Sure, it's a redneck writing about rednecks (Witte, according to a recent interview, grew up on a farm outside Tulsa, and swears that some of the events she depicts in this book really happened to family members of hers), but do you feel guilty for laughing about it? Maybe you should. That said, this stuff ranges from the grimly amusing to the down-and-out hysterical. If Jim Goad wants to kick my ass for thinking so, that's his right, and I'd probably let him do it, too. ***
Haikus at an all new level.......2003-11-29
If you love the art of the haiku AND have an off-beat sense of humor, then this book is for you! This book has a place of honor on my coffee table - it is simply entertaining to gauge the reactions of my friends and family as they pick it up and start reading it. It's definitely a conversation piece.
"No wedding complete/without cold beer & Elvis/impersonator".......2003-05-21
Follow the condensed adventures of Bubba, Flo, Wanda, Jake, and the feisty Grandma ("Last Las Vegas trip / spoiled by Granny's indecent / exposure arrest") in this amusing little book. NASCAR, guns, gumbo, and award-winning BBQ sauce, dogs under the porch, marriages and divorces -- the life of an extended redneck family chronicled in 17-syllable chapters. One haiku per page, just over 100 haiku; sit out under the awning of your trailer and read it straight through for the most laughs.
Book Description
This expanded version of the original cult poetry classic contains not only all 106 haiku from the first edition, but also nearly 150 brand-new redneck poems that are sure to generate the same big laughs as the original. Once again, the redneck lifestyle gets the black tie treatment through the hilariously contrasting filter of the formal Japanese haiku. Each of the nearly 250 wickedly funny verses contains just three lines and 17 syllables, yet they address the whole spectrum of redneck culture: RVs, Wal-Mart, beer, pop tarts, pickups, monster trucks, NASCAR, boats, trailers, trailer parks, barns, hunting, shotguns, Las Vegas, the lottery, and more. Readers will laugh until the cows, chickens, and, of course, hound dogs come home.

Haiku for the rest of us.......2007-04-03
Sometimes, traditional haiku bores me. Mentions of the season, nature, etc.
However, this book lends lighthearted humor to the poetry style.
Enjoyed it then passed it along to a friend.

Book Description
Sean Connery began the sixties spy movie boom playing James Bond in Dr. No and From Russia with Love. Their success inspired every studio in Hollywood and Europe to release everything from serious knockoffs to spoofs on the genre featuring debonair men, futuristic gadgets, exotic locales, and some of the world's most beautiful actresses whose roles ranged from the innocent caught up in a nefarious plot to the femme fatale.
Profiled herein are 107 dazzling women, well-known and unknown, who had film and television appearances in the spy genre. They include superstars Doris Day in Caprice, Raquel Welch in Fathom, and Ann-Margret in Murderer's Row; international sex symbols Ursula Andress in Dr. No and Casino Royale, Elke Sommer in Deadlier Than the Male, and Senta Berger in The Spy with My Face; and forgotten lovelies Greta Chi in Fathom, Alizia Gur in From Russia with Love, and Maggie Thrett in Out of Sight. Each profile includes a filmography that lists the actresses' more notable films. Some include the actresses' candid comments and anecdotes about their films and television shows, the people they worked with, and their feelings about acting in the spy genre are offered throughout. A list of websites that provide further information on women in spy films and television is also included.
Customer Reviews:
Another must read book on sweeties from the 60s.......2004-10-30
This is the third Tom Lisanti book I have purchased (the others being Fantasy Femmes of 60s Cinema and Drive-In Dream Girls). This book profiles far more ladies than either of those two books (107) and because of that, the profiles are not as in-depth and don't always involve interviewing the subjects (which Lisanti did quite throroughly with all of those profiled in the other two books). Also, some of the superchicks covered here were included in the other books. So, while I do suggest you get this book, I would make it a priority only after you have purchased and read the other two books first.
The first James Bond movie, Dr. No, led to an explosion of interest in secret agents. For the next ten years, everyone got in the act, with more James Bond films, Matt Helm films, Coburn's Flint movies and lots and lots of cheaply made European knockoffs, plus of course the tv shows like Man From Uncle, Mission Impossible, and I Spy. Lisanti - for this book only, in tandem with Louis Paul - does an admirable job of covering the lovely ladies who graced those projects. My only real disappointment was the omission of busty Carol Wayne who appeared in episodes of Man From UNCLE, Girl From UNCLE, and a memorable episode of I Spy: The Trouble With Temple. I asked Lisanti about this oversight and interestingly enough, he told me he was also approached about her absence from the book by Wayne's own son when Lisanti appeared on a local LA talkshow where Wayne's son was the director. Lisanti said he excluded her because he only included tv actresses that he interviewed. This requirement must not have applied to the enclosed film actresses, as one of those profiled is the late Sharon Tate.
The 107 actresses included here are (those with an asterisk were profiled in one of the other two books): Beverly Adams, Ursula Andress, Pier Angeli, Ann-Margret, Laura Antonelli, Claudine Auger, Tina Aumont, Barbara Bain, Alexandra Bastedo, Senta Berger, Martine Beswicke, Daniela Bianchi, Jacqueline Bisset, Honor Blackman, Erika Blanc, Dominique Boschero, Barbara Bouchet, Thordis Brandt, Ahna Capri, Judy Carne, Helene Chanel, Greta Chi, Tsai Chin, Joan Collins, Yvonne "Batgirl" Craig, Doris Day, Lynda Day George, Danielle De Metz, Mimi Dillard, Karin Dor, Andrea Dromm, Shirley Eaton, Rosella Falk, Sharon Farrell, Barbara Feldon, Anne Francis, Eunice Gayson, Gila Golan, Shelby Grant, Alizia Gur, Jean Hale*, Mie Hama, Susan Hart*, Gloria Hendry, Sharyn Hillyer, Jill Ireland, Karen Jensen*, Kathy Kersh, Sylvia Koscins, Nancy Kovack, Nancy Kwan, Jocelyn Lane, Sue Ane Langdon*, Daliah Lavi, Margaret Lee, Suzanne Leigh, Helga Line, Sue Lloyd, Bebe Loncar, Tina Louise, Joanne Lumley, BarBara Luna, Deanna Lund*, Carol Lynley, Arlene Martel, Marlyn Mason, Lois Maxwell, Diane McBain, Marisa Mell, Donna Michelle, Mary Ann Mobley, Terry Moore, Rosalba Neri, Rosemary Nicols, France Nuyen, Eileen O'Neill*. Lucianna Paluzzi, Trina Parks, Joanna Pettet, Nyree Dawn Porter, Stefanie Powers, Dorothy Provine, Eva Renzi, Janine Reynaud, Diana Rigg, Salli Sachse*, Jill St. John, Tura Satana, Jane Seymour, Nancy Sinatra, Sylvia Solar, Elke Sommer, Stella Stevens, Yoko Tani, Sharon Tate, Linda Thorson, Maggie Thrett, Marilu Tolo, Irene Tsu*, Sigrid Valdis, Monica Vitti, Ira von Furstenberg, Lesley Ann Warren, Raquel Welch, Lana Wood*, Celeste Yarnall*, and Francine York* (whew!).
Lisanti Does It Again!.......2002-06-03
The author's obvious love for his subject matter makes his newest work another delight for movie buffs! His coverage his thorough, his narrative amusing and oh, the wonderful photos! Whether it's Rebel Chick Nancy Sinatra, the [rear]-kicking Emma Peel in the form of Dame Diana Rigg, the staggering beauty of blonde Carol Lynley (betcha didn't even realize she WAS a spy chick!) or the camp factor of Agent 99, there is something in here for every fan! Plenty of "Where Are They Now?" information, too. SO much to have on your coffee table!
Must have book for spy film fans!.......2002-05-04
If you are a fan of spy movies - James Bond and all - then you need to get this book. It is full of exciting interviews and profiles of all the women in these films. It is a great read and a fun reference. It is also full of some great photos. I really enjoyed it.

Book Description
A real-life thriller—the story of kickbacks and payoffs, of shady deals struck in secret with known felons; a story in which half a million people lose enormous sums—some their life’s savings—in the largest securities fraud of the 1980s, with names like Onassis and Bush numbered among the victims.
Customer Reviews:
Disturbing.......2007-03-06
Its not the best written story of a financial scandal and overly relies on several characters for the facts and anecdotes. That written, it is a disturbing look at what was allowed to happen in the key mid-tier brokerage firm as controls lapsed in the pursuit of profits.
An exciting read...........2006-03-09
This is not Eichenwald's best book. But it's still better than 95 percent of the junk that passes for thrillers these days. In fact, I would be raving over this book if I hadn't read Eichenwald's "The Informant" and "Conspiracy of Fools" first. Those two set a very, very high bar. This one doesn't clear it completely, but it still gets darn close.

She called it like she saw it .......2006-07-14
Alice Thomas Ellis was a tough British lady who took a long and cold eyed look at the state of the church in the years after Vatican II and she didn't like what she saw. She was horrified by the changes: priests who seemed more like athiests, nuns who were more concerned with validating themsleves that in serving Jesus, Masses that seemed more like a backwoods tent meetings and so on. She was not gentle in expressing her disgust and it's impossible to read the book without being shaken. Some people may find Ellis's tone too harsh but I saw her remarkable humor and wit amidst the fire and anger.
It's a very good book by a clever writer. Its passionate but not gooey. If you can find this book--- I gaurantee you that it won't be in your local Catholic bookstore, don't hesitate to buy it.
The Roman Church and Modernism.......2002-02-21
Ellis, a devout Roman Catholic herself, presents an outstanding essay on the modern Roman Catholic Church and its deviations from orthodoxy and sense. It is a gentle, loving but stern rebuke of modernism and relativism that has engulfed her church.
Customer Reviews:
A great thriller.......2000-12-13
This is a story that I missed when it first came out -- but I went back to it after reading Eichenwald's new book, The Informant. This is fabulous -- full of twists and turns, a real legal thriller. The new book is better, but this one still kept me up late at night.

Photographs of the rare and endangered rock art of the lower Pecos River area.
Book Description
The Southwest holds a treasure trove of prehistoric rock art, the fascinating images of petroglyphs and pictographs spanning thousands of years of Indian culture. Fertility has been identified as one of the most obvious and persistent themes in rock art, the record resplendent with symbols of birth, death, and procreation. Three-time rock art author Dennis Slifer takes a wide and deep look at symbols of fertility and fecundity, meticulously documenting drawings made by prehistoric cultures and the historical tribes of today's greater Southwest, and comparing the symbols with those fertility symbols found in rock art sites around the world.

Book Description
In Serpent Upon a Rock, Warren Stevenson displays the perfect combination of romantic passion with classical restraint, integrating intellect with passion. Witty and ironic, the poems have a wonderfully organic sensibility that combines both ancient and modern voices. With a phrase or an image he can transport us from those ordinary moments in modern life to ancient Greece or a celebration of the solstice with William Blake.Warren Stevenson's poetry reflects his interest in romantic mythopoeia, including the myths of the androgyne and the Golden Age, as well as what Northrop Frye referred to as modern "powerful myths of alienation." The poems in Serpent Upon a Rock are sculpted out of stone to make a sympathetic and an open-hearted eloquence. Throughout the poems we hear the shattered echoes of civilization and the prophesies of Blake. The originality and the various technical resources Stevenson deploys in highly rhythmical and musical verse reveals a poet with a marvellous ear and vocal range, who has learned his craft well.

Book Description
The Shaman and the Water Serpent is a book for children that demonstrates how ancient Puebloan peoples carried out their daily lives. Renowned children's author Jennifer Owings Dewey writes about the Puebloan peoples' relationships with animals, and Benton Yazzie recreates the rock art depictions of familiar animals: deer, antelope, and rabbits.
Characters include the shaman, a man with supernatural power who provides insights into the mysterious world of gods and the spirits. Men and boys honor the animals they hunt by singing songs to their spirits, while the women, children, and old people wait hungrily back in the village. A drought has set in and the villagers wonder when the rains will return. As they hope for rain, the women and girls tend to the corn and the men sharpen their arrow points for the next hunt. The water serpent, a revered animal, travels along the riverbanks and is thought by the Puebloan peoples to be just the animal to coax the rain back onto their dry fields.
Reading level: grade 4 and up
Dewey tells the stories of early Puebloan peoples and their reverance for the land and animals on which their survival depended.
Customer Reviews:
A picturebook that shows young readers how the ancient Puebloan Native Americans lived their daily lives........2007-04-14
The Shaman and the Water Serpent is a picturebook that shows young readers how the ancient Puebloan Native Americans lived their daily lives. A three-page text introduction summarizes what archaeological and narrative history evidence reveals about Puebloan culture. The Shaman and the Water Serpent uses black-and-white illustrations to depict people trying to survive in time of drought and scarce food, while the verse tells of shamanic efforts to communicate their need for life-giving rain to the spirits. "The shamans go to the rocks and pray for rain. / They make images of the water serpent / with their chipping stones. / They sing songs and tell the spirits / what they hunger for, / how thirsty they are." The occasional text-free two-page illustrations are an especial highlight of this welcome introduction to one of the many diverse Native American cultures, especially recommended for the children's section of public and school libraries.
