I recommend it!.......2001-04-25
The combination of photos, measured drawings, and brief commentary makes this a great resource for designers and craftspeople. On the down side, the drawings are at weird scales (like 0'-1 3/8" = 1'-0"), so if you want to draft from them, you'll have to get crazy with the photocopier or scanner. The organization could be a little tighter-- there's a stool in the table section--, and the pieces aren't quite in chronological order. Still, the details are clear, and the catalog is fairly good. One hundred and two photos! Over 500 drawings! (I think this includes each view/detail.)
It's a Dover book! You're not going to find this information for less.

One of the most useful books in the field to furniture designers, manufacturers, craftsmen, antique dealers and collectors. Photographs and drawings of the most striking furniture pieces of the 16th, 17th, 18th, and early years of the 19th centuries comprise the book; accompanying text described stylistic features and developments, prototypes, kinds of wood used, the function of the piece, and where the original is now located.
The author points out all the distinguishing features of the particular piece and the style of furniture it illustrates: the cabriole leg and the ample proportions of the Queen Anne chair, the gracefulness of line in Hepplewhite furniture, the Dutch influence on the work of the early American colonists, the turned or twisted legs and stretchers of the Cromwellian armchair. Present day designers can see how the great furniture makers of earlier periods combined curved lines with straight ones, gave certain pieces delicacy and grace while others assumed a sturdy, massive strength, used richly ornamented surfaces or left the wood simple and unadorned.
Selected from collections in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Boston Museum of Fine Arts, and the Museum of the Rhode Island School of Design, the book shows chests, tables, chairs, dressing tables, desks, highboys, commodes, couches. Styles include Colonial American, Duncan Phyfe, Windsor,Sheraton, Hepplewhite, Chippendale, Louis XIV, 18th century Dutch, 16th century Italian. The most outstanding feature is the measured drawings for each piece of furniture. Accurate to the nearest 1/16th of an inch, these drawings can be used to construct precise duplicates. There are several drawings for each piece - front, side, and back elevations and often details of individual sections. An extensive bibliography compiled by Adolf Placzek, librarian at the Columbia Library of Architecture, provides sources of measured drawings, offering time-saving leads to hundreds of furniture styles in other books.

Fantastic Visual References........2007-03-17
It's really terrific to see so many creative depictions of mermaids and the like in one little book. I really enjoyed the different perspectives- some terrifying, others humorous, all outstanding in their own unique way.
PLAYFUL AND DEADLY MERMAIDS.......2005-08-29
Mermaids is another fine series of Gallery Girl collections from SQ Productions. Sal Quartuccio continues to give an outlet to a very diverse and talented assortment of fantasy and erotic artists. This is the first of the three volumes currently available in the Gallery Girls Mermaids series. Mermaids have always had that enchanting allure of beauty for men of the sea. While these creatures of myth are usually presented as peaceful, playful, and perhaps a bit mischievous, many of the artists in Mermaids Volume One have a different perspective on them. The book starts out with a gorgeous, painted, wrap-around cover by Joe Chiodo whose style is well-matched to the lighthearted side of mermaids. The interior artists include Daniel Pascarelli, Tomas Giorello, Jose Torres, James Ryman, Pelaez, and Mike Hoffman.
Pascarelli takes a fairly traditional approach as he shows two mermaids, a blonde and a brunette, lying on a rocky shore, soaking up the sun. Another Pascarelli piece features a blonde mermaid lounging inside of a giant clam. Mike Hoffman presents a gorgeous piece with a mermaid, armed with a trident, battling a male warrior. Hoffman is one of my new favorites among fantasy artists due to his strong Frazetta influence and his art stands as a tribute to that true master of fantasy art. Showing that not all mermaids are playful, Artist Quintabani has two mermaids locked underwater in a duel to the death. James Ryman probably gets the honor for most horrific piece in the collection as a beautiful mermaid finds herself facing an enormous beast that is part humanoid, part crab, and part octopus that looks like it just walked out of a Robert E. Howard story.
A strong-willed mermaid rides a mammoth great white shark in a piece by Boada, and Capdevila provides a picturesque work of a tranquil shoreline with a mermaid reclining on the beach as seagulls fly overhead. The great Pelaez has a number of outstanding pieces in the book including one showing a mermaid discovering the bones of an ancient seaman at the bottom of the ocean. Whether these creatures are lying serenely on the shore or battling fierce beasts far below the ocean's surface, this initial collection promises to be a great new series in the Gallery Girls line. I look forward to seeing the next two volumes!

A loved reading 'to hell and back......', it is so good to hear another fans feelings on catatonia, and have such insights of what it was like in the early days to see them live, hear how they progressed, and to gain a 'realer' veiw of their lives.
This books weaves from stories and information about the band and their music, to a moving insight into one persons troubled life, and how how overcame these problems through following the band (quite literally!),
A sad/happy story told in a witty and interesting way, any fan of catatonia will love this, as would other people merely interested in the music industry, or who are just plain nosey about brian wrights life!
A book written by a true fan.

MET Mummies, Oh My!.......2004-05-10
This book contains all the rules you need for live-action Mummy games, based off their gameline Mummy: the Resurrection. Like the other live-action World of Darkness games, it contains all the basic Mind's Eye Theatre rules, and the standard photos and signature character fiction (which actually fits in pretty well with the mood and setting). However, it also includes stuff specific to Mummies. After getting through the basics, the book introduces Mummies, the Holy Land and the Djinn. Mention is made of ancient Egyptian history and mythology (complete with a deity list), up to the events that caused the return of Osiris and the mummies. Theres a brief look at the various Mummy factions (like the Cults of Isis and Osiris) and a glossary of Egyptian, Greek and Arabic terms. Theres also a look at the mummies homelands in the Web of Faith, setting details for Egypt, Saudi Arabia and the Underworld.
Chapter Two covers the advantages, traits and weaknesses of the Mummy splats, each based off the ancient Egyptian parts of the soul (the Ka which guards the physical body, the Ba which carries knowledge from the underworld, the eternal Sahu, the Khu which connects to the divine and the dark urges of the Khaibit). Following this is the chapter on character creation, which includes all of the rules, Traits, Abilities, Backgrounds and Influences, specifically geared towards playing mummies (particularly the Backgrounds, such as Ka, Tomb, Vessel and so forth). Theres also a list of mummy specific Merits and Flaws, and details on Willpower and Sekhem (mystical energy). Then theres an entire chapter on Hekau, ancient Egyptian magic. It includes things like alchemy, necromancy, name magic, weather control (even calling down the Ten Plagues!) and making ushabtis. All are arranged in the standard Basic-Intermediate-Advanced format, but each one includes numerous rituals rather than a set list of powers.
Chapter five covers the basic Mind's Eye Theatre stuff: rules for tests, combat, using weapons, mass challenges, derangements, etc. Theres also the mummy specific stuff, including the rules for Balance, being judged, death and rebirth (mummies are functionally immortal, but they still have to spend time in the underworld between resurrections), loosing Sekhem, corruption, aging, disease, Vampires, the Veil and so on. The next chapter also covers general stuff on Storytelling and running a live-action game. Finally the book closes out looking at allies and enemies. The Apepnu (bane-mummies) are covered, along with their undead servants, cannibal cultists and so forth. Theres also mention of the Followers of Set and Hashashinn vampires, Ahl-i-Batin and Taftani wizards, shapeshifters (were-jackals, cobras, cats and crocodiles) and even other mummies who don't serve Osiris (including the Incan Cappacocha and the Asian Wu'Tian).
Overall, this is a wonderful book, giving you and your players the chance to portray the ancient Egyptian "undying" in their dark battle against the forces of Apep (corruption). Unlike the other World of Darkness games, you portray a hero fighting to restore ancient balance to a dying world. Its both a dark game, and a game of hope. In addition, it draws very heavily on Egyptian and Middle Eastern mythology (ie Set, Osiris, mummies, Djinn, Apep, etc) and covers Egypt and Arabia in the World of Darkness. Overall, this is an awesome game, either by itself or in conjunction with other Live Action games (especially Vampire, Mage, Werewolf and Wraith)

Weak, weak, so very weak. Just as weak startups should never be started in the first place, some books (about startups, the irony) should never be printed in the first place. A tear for the tree who got cut in order to print this book. Such waste...
A solid book but poor editing.......2006-07-02
The book's unique approach of using what they call "Star Charts" is interesting and innovative. The authors give their advice backed by solid, almost painstaking research of 350 startups they followed over many years.
One of the most aggravating aspects of this book, however, was the sheer repetition -- of stories, of advice, of summarizing other company's history. There are numerous instances of where virtually the same passage is repeated in 3 or 4 different places in the book -- a quote, a snippet of advice, 3 paragraphs of background of a particular startup (really, do we need to be constantly reminded of what company did what? I get it!), of conclusions even.
I felt this was done basically to pad the book. That the book, had it been well-written and properly edited by someone who actually ready it from front-cover to back-cover, it would've been about half its 293 page length (100+ pages of which is an Appendix). So you basically have a 193 page book that should've been about 100 pages.
Is it worth the hefty price? Probably not.
Disappointing..........2006-04-11
I really had to push myself into finishing the book instead of throwing the book against the wall in frustration.
Why? Because the book offered gems like "Manage your cash. Startups in the bubble years burned through money, but companies today have to be run much more tightly."
I got the sense that the authors were just trying to fill the pages when same quotes were used 2 or 3 times across different chapters like a high school student trying to pad a book report.
Intriguing title but ultimately the authors just served up rehashed conventional wisdom.
Solid Startup Game Plan.......2006-03-22
Author Joel Kurtzman, consultant and former editor of the Harvard Business Review, has distilled a mass of research into a handy navigation tool for the intrepid startup entrepreneur. The Global Technology Center at PricewaterhouseCoopers, where Kurtzman was a partner, conducted quantitative research on 350 startup firms and held qualitative interviews with many entrepreneurs and startup CEOs. Kurtzman and co-author Glenn Rifkin present a number of conceptual frameworks based on this research. As an entrepreneur, you can use their frameworks to guide your thinking during the startup process. This book explores structural issues you must address to build a new organization, including setting up a board, forming management and sales teams, forging alliances, acquiring customers and creating business plans. Perhaps because of the particular startups surveyed - mostly technology companies - the book's advice is often carefully hedged against various "ifs", "ands" and "buts." However, the writers ultimately settle on 10 "critical factors" for startups, basing each one on their solid body of research. The first-time entrepreneur will gain much by considering each of these factors - and evaluating them in light of the nine-point business model presented - while seasoned corporate founders will see that the authors' research reinforces lessons they have already learned. We recommend this book to entrepreneurs (particularly in technology), investors, startup CEOs and the directors of new companies.
