Great way to decorate on a budget.......2002-11-18
I just love the beautiful paintings of Maxfiled Parish and have wanted to place his works around my home for a long time. However, being on a tight budget makes this difficlut....at least it did until I got this book of posters. While the prints aren't as large as I would idealy purchace, the quality and quantity for the price can't be beat. This is a good, inexpensive way to get good-quality art onto your walls even on a pin-up poster budget.
I agree..........2000-06-17
I was hesitant to purchase a book of prints without being able to see it first, but what a great purchase it turned out to be. I would recommend this to any Parrish fan.
My review is extremely favorable, and I mean every word........1999-10-24
This book is tastefully constructed, and the quality of the prints is impressive. Aside from the amazingly coloured and detailed prints, a short biography is included for those newly aquainted with the artist. It is an excellent buy, not only for the purpose of economy, but with consideration to some of the lesser-known works. It is incredibly rare to see so many prints in one place. Anyone who has this collection can tell you that you will never regret buying it, and for that price you simply can't afford to pass it up.

Better than an owners manual.......2007-08-13
This book is better than an owners manual for cs2, taking you through step by step instructions, if you already know something just skip that section, if you don't then it works, and it's easy to understand. The pages are color coded, great index and it has lots of picture examples.
must-have for photographers.......2007-05-30
i would recommend this book to anyone who is a photographer or thinking about taking up photography as a hobby. it's an amazing book and has very nice tutorials. i've been using it for about a year now. the price is very nice too.
Lots Of "Eureka" Moments Here.......2007-05-29
I've taken an abbreviated Photoshop class only to leave with more questions than answers. Fortunately, our teacher appreciated this fact and recommended this book to all the photographers in her class. I have not been disappointed except for lacking the time to work my way through this massive tome. Every time I open this book I discover another wonderful timesaver or neat trick to improve my photographs.
As good as it gets.......2007-05-14
Even more than I could expect! This book is intended to teach digital photography with Photoshop to make your photos get a new level that you could never imagine before. But if you want to learn the camera or tips to make your photos better without using your computer this is not what your need. One plus is file format explanations. And if you want to get muscle, this book is perfect for you too; because it's made with the best paper I saw in a book with photo quality in all pages the weight is a ton.
Good formatting.......2007-04-10
Besides being a good book about CS2 I really like the color coded chapter edge tabs. Frequently, it is the little things that make a difference.

Mutts II- Comic Du Jour...for all time!.......2002-03-02
I LOVE Patrick McDonnell! Without arrogance, profanity, or the modern deluge of grotesque vernacular, he took two wonderful characters (Mooch and Earl), their "families" (em, packs) and made them timeless.
Having 6 cats, two dogs, four ferrets, a half-dozen rabbits, and a few fish, I see Mooch, Earl Stinky Puddin', Woofie, Doozy, Millie, and all the other wonderful beings in McDonnell's books as a reflection of REAL people. Not fashion models, rock stars, and other modern pop icons...real people who really love their pets...friends.
I also like McDonnell's subtle and thoughtful animal issue strips: One can be political without being in-your-face. Overpopulation, how mankind has affected THEIR world, man's inability to care for our sentient frinds...
I certainly hope he never retires: Every morning I take one of my dogs, Google, down to the paperbox to get the daily paper, and our daily dose of MUTTS.
You will LOVE this book. The strips on pages 8 &9 will make you think. Page 15 is how EVERYONE should feel! Page 76 is farm-time funny. Pages 104 & 105 are timeless and funny. But the center strip on page 119...All I can say is YESH!!!!
One of the best around..........2001-04-25
Patrick McDonnell's "Mutts" is one of the best comics in the papers. Nothing could be finer then, than to have a book (or several) of the collected strips to peruse at one's leisure. "Mutts" is funny, warm, clever, honest, and this collection has been nicely printed. I was especially amused by the Sunday strips' clever references to comics of days gone by. I hope that in the future, colored collections will be available.
All creations by Patrick McDonnell are just "schwell"!.......2000-02-12
All five publications by Patrick McDonnell are a joy to own, read and re-read! With the premature departure of Bill Watterson, Gary Larson and the retirement of the beloved Charles Schulz, Patrick McDonnell has filled the void with his wonderfully witty and wise panels both hilariously funny and yet reminding us of our responsiblity to those who cannot speak for themselves. His work is both satisfyingly current and yet contains the best essence of the earliest cartoons (Krazy Kat, etc.) I await the next compilation! Cheers, Patrick!
Too bad..........2000-01-16
... that I can't rate this higher than five stars!
This is the sweetest comic strip ever. Its innocent characters, pet antics, and angstless plotlines make me feel that the world is a beautiful place. Amidst a thousand cynical strips, this one matches "Peanuts" for charm.
Made me schick to my schtomach.......1999-08-31
All molasses, no zip, this treacly twaddle must give people who think Hallmark cards aren't sticky enough a real chance to drown in cuteness. The drawing style is superb and harks back to Herriman and The Little Hitchhiker, but the strip itself is deadly stuff. I can't schtand it anymore!

A unique collection of hilariously candid British real estate ads.
Customer Reviews:
True stories!.......2002-06-09
This book's property reviews are startling in their candor. It's startling that one man dared be frank about the condition of the property he hoped to sell or rent--and hilarious that he included impressions of the former owners.
I bought it excitedly after having heard about it on the radio. Then, when I finally got it, I realized I'd basically heard the best ones on the radio--but they're buried in there for you to fine. And the less-than-best are still quite more interesting than anything you'd find in circulation today. Mr. Brooks has a great vocabulary and a wonderful way of reducing many a dynastic saga to a column-inch.
I have withheld the fifth star because of the printing rather than the "work". It seems the novelty of a narrowly shaped book was deemed necessary to further titillate the prospective reader-far more necessary than legibility. As other reviewers indicate, it's hard for the American reader to get some of the jokes unless she's spent some time in London and has a familiarity with the neighborhoods. Further, the abbreviations standard to a newspaper in another era, in another country in my case, are indecipherable. Each of these shortcomings could have been addressed with a map of the city and a key to the abbreviations and their meanings-either of which would be far preferred to the hasty and uninspired line drawings the publisher saw fit to include.
A Bathroom Reader.......2002-02-19
Since the real estate listings are so small they make perfect bathroom feeding fodder. I have this book on the back of the throne and break it out whenever I wish to spend a few minutes relaxing.
The listings are generally quite funny (although the humor can be a bit tame). Some references are obscure for Americans (as the real estate listed in in London).
Decent book if you like this sort of thing.

French Cinema: From Its Beginnings to the Present
ASIN: 1903364086 |
Book Description
Through an analysis of films as diverse as Jean de Florette, Ma Vie en rose, and Nikita, this collection of new essays is a comprehensive introduction to the concerns and styles that characterize contemporary popular French film. Set within an economic, political, and social context, France on Film reconsiders the direction French cinema is taking today, bringing into focus critical questions concerning wide-ranging notions of French culture, identity, and nationhood. Examining questions of popular cinema as opposed to art cinema, this book also seeks to (re)present films that have been widely popular in France and internationally and to thus challenge the traditional art-house view of contemporary French cinema. It also includes a comprehensive filmography and statistics detailing the current state of the French film industry.

color pages fell off the book within 3 days.......2006-11-10
The rough guide ot morocco is definitely better than the LP guide in terms of its content. But, this particular book, shipped out from amazon, got binding problems. The 10 or so color pages in the beginning of the book all fell off before I reached Morocco. Lucky enough, the rest of the book was intact for the whole trip, enduring my rough treatment. In any case, it might be better to go without the color pages anyway, because they are just picture bearing no help to the trip and weight a little more than the regular paper.
Weak binding.......2006-07-04
I bought this book from amazon.com and then noticed exactly the same edition in my local bookshop for a similar price but in the strong paperback binding (versus the weak paperback binding as sold by amazon).
Good but more on the local language.......2006-02-17
I have no complaints about this guide. It served me reasonably well on my trip to the country. One thing was missing though. Some guidance on the local language. I mean expressions, food, all the things you need when you visit. I tried to use my European French but I was not always understood. A new edition of this guide could include an extended section on the language. That would complement it quite nicely.
The new edition is excellent.......2005-04-17
I have no experience with the previous edition, and until now I only used the Lonely Planet on Morocco, but I did some tests on issues I had found missing in the Lonely Planet and the new Rough Guide passed the test excellently.
For instance the Lonely Planet had hardly anything on the nice road between Taroudant and Ouerzazate, in between two Atlasses, so almost fully skipping saffron paradise Taliouine and carpetters paradise Tazenaght, while the Rough Guide does not assume you will pass that road through Marrakch, which requires crossing the High Atlas twice.
And even on the road from West to East behind the Anti-Atlas through Tissint etc. the Rough Guide has a feature.
It is more weighty than the Lonely Planet, but that is because it has more information, and that is what one eventually needs.

Great for the armchair traveler.......2002-11-12
I am not actually planning to visit Morocco, but I like /thinking/ about visiting Morocco. I found this guide literate and insightful.
Customer Reviews:
This about the only map of Morocco I could find in the USA -- and it is almost impossible to get!!.......2007-07-30
It's an excellent map, very serviceable both for planning a trip and trekking through Morocco. I wanted 2, one for me and for my partner. They were only able to deliver one. You couldn't even get it from Rough Guide itself. I presume all the commpanies are making new maps -- but still, I don't understand it. I understand maps are easy to get in Europe, but Europeans go to Morocco with much greater frequency that US citizens -- so it may be a market demand issue.
But if you can get this map -- grab it... it probably is one that was left in some warehouse somewhere.

Morocco is a musical wonderland, stuffed with a bewildering surfeit of sounds; raw, sophisticated, ancient, modern, acoustic, electronic, mellow, fierce, deeply spiritual and extravagantly hedonistic. Culturally fed by rivers flowing in from all directions, its musical gene pool is rich and diverse, although the unique legacy of Morocco's own native Berber culture remains more rooted than any imported influences. This album features two of Morocco's musical giants, Jil Jilala and Nass El Ghiwane, the best-loved Moroccan female group, Bnet Marrakech, and the greatest al aita star of modern times, Fatna Bent El Houcine. Delving into some of Morocco's musical traditions, such as melhoun and gnawa, The Rough Guide To The Music Of Morocco also features some of the more contemporary and electronic sounds to have emerged out of this culturally rich country.

Book Description
At the time of Christ, a legendary culture was on the rise in northern Europe. Two millenia later they would be remembered for their reverence of nature, their treatment of women, and their courage in battle. Had they been allowed to expand and grow, they might have had their own Golden Age, and Western culture might be very different today. Instead, they met the Romans, who eventually conquered them all. This magnificent people was the Celts, and this is their story.
This volume explores their culture. Find out who they were, what they held holy, the monsters they fought - both real and mythical - why they battled each other, and what gave them joy. In addition to providing tons of detailed material on the Celts, this book allows you to bring them into your d20 campaign. A host of new Character Classes, Feats, Skills, and other special new rules, makes this the definitive book on fantasy role-playing in the Celtic Age.
Origins Award Winner - Best Role-Playing Game Supplement 2002!
Customer Reviews:
Excellent introduction to roleplaying in the Celtic World.......2003-07-12
The book is basically divided into two sections, the first half is an historical introduction to Celtic life and the history of the Celts between 100 BC and 100 AD. This was one of the best written and most informative overviews of Celtic life that I have ever read. Using sources ranging from Greek and Roman records and memoires, Irish legends, and the archeological record, the book covers everthing from warfare, daily life, diet, and the role of women, to religion, class structure, and technology (pointing out for example that the Celts invented or brought to Europe soap, chainmail, horse shoes, wooden barrels, steel swords and etc.)
My only complaint about this first section is that a bibiography would have been nice. The author also celtic swords as being four feet long and nearly impossible to wield one handed. Every celtic sword I've seen from archeological finds were three feet or less and usually had small grips only suitible for one hand use. All in all though I learned several facts and fascinating anecdotes I hadn't known about, which I later verified from other sources. Anyone intersted in the celts should love this book.
The second half with the D20 material is equally fascinating, and introduces several new combat rules and rules on social aspects such as prestige which could be applicable to many other genres.
Very good detail on Celtic history.......2003-06-04
This book has a great deal of detail on roleplaying in the Celtic age. Most of the game specific stuff is relegated to the later half of the book. The modifications made to standard D20 look well balanced, with several new core classes and prestige classes to give your games a Celtic feel. There is also details on Celtic gods (although it's suggested that Cleric not be used as a class) and Celtic monsters (although not enough for my taste).
The first half (or so) of the book gives a good background on Celtic history and society, such that no one should have trouble getting into character.
All-in-all a good introduction to Celtic roleplaying, although I could have used more Celtic specific monsters.

Book Description
The Whole Brain Business Book is the long-awaited culmination of Ned Herrmann's highly respected and extensive research and testing. In it, he presents his four-quadrant model of the brain and the corresponding thinking styles: logician, organizer, communicator, and visionary. Most people and organizations, he demonstrates, are stuck in a ``brain rut'' because their work is dominated by just one mode. Through highly practical explorations and exercises, he shows individuals and organizations how to harness the power of the whole brain. Readers will use The Whole Brain Business Book to expand their own thinking styles--to create and manage Whole Brain Teams--and to introduce new levels of flexibility and innovation into the corporate culture. It will show them how organizations like DuPont and GE use their ``whole brain'' orientation to thrive and profit in times of chaos--and it will help them to do the same.
Customer Reviews:
Spurred my burning interest in understanding the world's most powerful portable thinking machine located between my two ears!.......2006-10-08
'The Creative Brain' was my first brain book that helped me to understand my learning, thinking & decision making preferences - my brain dominance, to be precise. It came with a valuable proprietary personal assessment tool, the Herrmann Brain Dominance Instrument (HBDI). I felt very good after learning about my scored results (from the author's outfit in the United States) with the tool, which eventually allowed me to exploit my capabilities - & to overcome my limitations - in both professsional & personal terms.
The book also had an interesting story about the author, Ned Herrmann, & his amazing journey of personal self-discovery. He was trained as a physicist & worked at General Electric in a management function. Yet, he also enjoyed an active career as a performing artist - first as a singer & later as a painter/sculptor.
It was rather a thick book, printed in large format, with 400 odd pages, but it was filled with personal anecdotes, solid data, & useful charts.
I had enjoyed reading - & reflecting upon - the book very much at the time I had bought it in the late 80's. I was then working as a General Manager of a high- technology laboratory (Real Time Graphics) from Sweden, with a research focus in developing value-added applications with their proprietary real-time man-machine communication software, designated as 'EyesScream'. In reality, Ned Herrmann's book game me a lot of valuable application insights, particularly from the standpoint of cognitive ergonomics. The experiences allowed me to work efficiently & effectively with many customers.
Subsequently, I went on to acquire the author's second book, The Whole Brain Business Book, in the mid-90s. WOW, another wonderful book from Ned Herrmann! In it, the author expanded my understanding of the metaphorical four-quadrant model of the brain & its corresponding learning, thinking & decision making styles: logician, organizer, communicator, & visionary. I also enjoyed reading the book very much as I felt really inspired & empowered after learning how to harness the power of the whole brain.
By the way, this is Ned Herrmann's definition of creativity: "Among other things, it is an ability to:
- challenge assumptions
- recognise patterns
- see in new ways
- make new connections
- take risks
- & seize upon a chance."
In some way, the two books spurred my burning interests on a continuing quest for better understanding of the world's most powerful portable thinking machine, located between my two ears!
Too Simple.......2001-11-18
Details in the the explaination & implication as a Sales & Marketing is too simple as a Sales Person.
Herrmann's Brain Dominance Instrument: A New Way of Thinking.......2000-03-06
Ned Herrmann's book, "The Whole Brain Business Book", deserves a five star rating. Herrmann has written an excellent book, I only wish I had read it seven years ago when I first ventured out in the world to start my own business. It is a must read for anyone who is planning on starting their own business, has a startup business, or has decision making responsibilities in an organization. The Whole Brain Business Book is very easy to read and is written in a very instructive manner. The author provides many examples from his research and he uses a number of diagrams that are very useful in determining a company's and/or one's personal management style, in addition to some insight as to how one thinks, makes decision and work together with other people. A number of exercises and step by step instructions are provided to assist readers in learning how to make decisions that incorporate all of the brain's functions. I found some very valuable information in this book that I will use to enhance my decision-making process. Herrmann has made me stop and re-evaluate some of the ways I approach a number of business issues.
This book is divided into five dynamic sections; each section is packed with methodologies, examples and exercises for utilizing Herrmann's concept. Herrmann provides some hard evidence to support his Herrmann Brain Dominance Instrument (HBDI) tool. HBDI is an assessment tool that is uses to determine what drives the way one thinks and makes decisions. HBDI utilizes four quadrants (styles), Organizer, Personalizer or Visualizer, each quadrant represented by a letter A-D. Herrmann believes that we make decisions based on some combination of these four thinking styles and that cultivating these styles and utilizing the resulting energy is the key to productivity and creativity in business.
Herrmann presents some very interesting information about entrepreneurals, and how they rank based on his HBDI tool. He expands this discussion by pointing out the difference between a entrepreneural, one who works for him/herself and a intrapreneural, one who works for a company. Herrmann discusses risk taking and the importance in learning from failure. He pursues this further by describing the type of management that nurtures creativity and sets the stage for innovative thinking. Herrmann discusses characteristics of people who are on the outer realm, (he calls them Mavericks) and how and why they are so successful (he uses Tom Peters and David Letterman as examples). He touches on process reengineering, and how it is generally initiated based on cost savings versus change in work processes. In addition, he provides some interesting research data regarding CEO's and how they ranked a list of sixteen primary work elements. In the final chapter, Herrmann presents some helpful steps for becoming a Whole Brained Businessperson.
A "must read" for any business person!.......1997-06-12
Ned Herrmann's Whole Brain Business Book is one of the most useful business books to appear in a decade. Use of the whole brain model to align people's thinking style preferences with their work may be the single most powerful way businesses can increase productivity without increasing costs.
Mr. Herrmann's conversational style and "whole brain" teaching approach make the book highly readable. The book reviews the history of business in this country in terms of the kinds of thinking valued during each era. More importantly, it predicts the shift that must take place in business thinking in order to compete effectively in the growing global economy in decades to come. Effective team functioning and creative, strategic thinking are enormously important to business today. The Whole Brain Business Book tells how to maximize both.
The four quadrant model developed by Ned Herrmann is a powerful tool. The Whole Brain Business Book describes how to use it. Because the model was developed while Mr. Herrmann was working at GE, for use by business, and because it is physiologically based, it is more acceptable to many business people than many similar organizing constructs available today.
With this book Ned Herrmann provides individuals and companies with a tool to enhance understanding of themselves and others, take the emotional charge out of differences, and increase individual and team effectiveness. Unlike many business books whose ideas are good in the abstract, but difficult to make concrete, Mr. Herrmann provides simple graphics which make the ideas easy to remember and use. Examples include the Communication Walk-Around Exercise and the Whole Brain Delegation Walk Around Model.
Anyone working at any level in business should read The Whole Brain Business Book. Incidentally, it will improve your personal relationships as well. You will never look at yourself or others in quite the same way!

Whole brain thinking at its best........1996-07-02
At the core of Ned Herrmann's most recent book lies his belief that the functioning of the human brain is driven by a four-quadrant interconnected set of mental processing modes. These four thinking styles, says Herrmann, originate in the brain's left and right cerebral hemispheres, and in the left and right half limbic systems, each resulting in significantly different and distinct behavioral characteristics in human beings. How this complex brain interaction determines thinking mode dominance and thinking style preferences, and how individuals and organizations can benefit from such understanding, are the main themes of this highly thought provoking and exceptionally relevant management book. Herrmann's work is widely thought of by training and development specialists as superseding earlier "left brain/right brain" thinking models as well as having advanced new concepts of mind research and their applications in business settings. In fact, this is the first book exclusively dedicated to applying whole brain thinking to a wide range of business situations.Thinking dominance by one of the four styles leads to the development of preferences, which in turn establish our interests, foster the development of competencies, and influence our career choices and ultimately the work that we do, contends Herrmann. Knowing whether you, your organization, or a particular job, is predominantly quadrant A, B, C, or D oriented, makes all the difference whether or not relationships have an opportunity to develop and flourish or to remain counter-productive and underutilized. Mismatching people and assignments by not using whole brain thinking processes can be extremely costly, both in terms of individual psychological danage and in terms of negative organizational results, suggests Herrmann.Knowing your thinking preference is a good place to start understanding whole brain technology. You can get an idea of whether you are an Analyser, Organizer, Personalizer, or Visualizer (Quadrants A, B, C, and D, respectively), by completing the Preference Indicator Exercise provided in the book. Better yet, you can complete the HBDI (Herrmann Brain Dominance Instrument) survey, which, when evaluated by trained specialists from the Ned Herrman Group, will result in your own HBDI Personal Profile.
