VERY FUNNY BOOK.......2007-08-25
I loved this book - I laughed and laughed as I read it...... Highly recommend !!!!!
2 sides to every story! and...what are the ethics?.......2006-01-14
Just keep in mind that there are 2 sides to every story! Just as there are some crazy families out there- there are some crazy nannies too!
I do question the ethics of writing about this (without disguising names/families) You are exposed to such an intimate circle of family life it just does not seem quite right.
I once had the pleasure of sitting next to (on a plane) a lifetime nanny, who had nannied for a royal family and was with her current family (a beautiful young woman with a fairly old gentleman!)
She said "oh if I could only write a book, no one would ever believe me!"
That's the point- she would never write an expose, she was a trained nanny and viewed herself as a proffesional. Someone with a high level of ethics is the type of person I would want as a nanny, not someone who wants to cash in!
No wonder it was self-published!.......2005-12-21
I love all the tell-all books written by former nannies, so I thought I'd love this one too. But this book really suffered from a lack of an editor. The format (in which the book is "organized" according to a movie theme, and the author creates imaginary scripts for how scenes could have played out) is just SO ridiculously cheesy that I actually rolled my eyes several times. I see that it will be published soon by a major publishing company, and I can only hope that they will have subjected this work to some major editing. Hopefully they ditched the movie theme too - it made it read like a high school report. Read this only if you really don't care about how well a book is written or if you are that desperate to read any former nanny's tell-all story. There's not really that much dirt here to make it worthwhile.
LOVED IT!!.......2005-01-29
I absolutely LOVED this book and the author! I felt for her and could so relate to what she was going through. Llike Suzanne, I grew up in a small town and left home at 19 to become a live-in Nanny. I was paid $150.00 a week to care for three kids 24/7, clean house, and cook. Unlike Suzanne, I had NO ONE to talk to except my Mom, IF I could afford the long distance phone call. Anyway, I felt her pain and LOVED the book. She is also VERY funny!!
PS. Steve Swartz REALLY IS Mike Ovitz:
Mark Ebner -- investigative journalist and contributor to the jaded, snarky, underground Hollywood rag LA Innuendo -- has a new book out on February 24. "Hollywood, Interrupted: Insanity Chic in Babylon -- The Case Against Celebrity," co-written with Andrew Breitbart (Matt Drudge's right-hand guy). Basically 416 pages of celebrities behaving badly. Read how Mike Ovitz's then six-year-old son once peed on a tree in the front yard, yelling "My mom said I could, and mom is in charge of you, I could have you fired!" to his nanny when she scolded him.
Badly Written and Boring.......2005-01-14
This book is so poorly written, it is almost embarrassing to read. It just isn't funny, it's boring; in fact I read it with a morbid fascination wondering how much worse it would get. I finally gave up after asking myself why am I making myself read a book that is making me cringe at the author's lack of literary skill, humor, and artistic talent. The Nanny Diaries it isn't.

Book Description
The screenplay for Stanley Kubrick’s disturbing and exhilarating masterpiece, featuring 800 film stills chosen by the director.
This unique illustrated screenplay features 800 still images from “A Clockwork Orange,” selected by Stanley Kubrick when the film was first released in 1971. As Kubrick comments in his introduction: “I have always wondered if there might be a more meaningful way to present a book about a film. To make, as it were, a complete graphic representation of the film, cut by cut, with the dialogue printed in the proper place in relation to the cuts, so that within the limits of still photos and words, an accurate (and I hope interesting) record of a film might be available… This book represents that attempt.”
Screenplay by Stanley Kubrick, based on the novel by Anthony Burgess.
Book Description
Bringing together new and critically informed essays about one of the most controversial films ever made, this collection of writings examines the literary origins of the work, the nature of cinematic violence, questions of gender and the film's treatment of sexuality, as well as the difficulties of adapting an invented language ("nadsat") for the screen. The volume also includes two contemporary and conflicting reviews by Roger Hughes and Pauline Kael, a detailed glossary of "nadsat" and reproductions of stills from the film.

Book Description
This award-winning picture book invites children along to dance to the rhythm of swing at the Savoy in Harlem, to rejoice to the rhythm of gospel from a church pew on a Sunday morning, and more. Each stunning spread—including art, poetic text, a description of the music style, and a time line of selected historical events—encompasses the spirit of the times and the strength of the communities where the music was born. Toyomi Igus's lyrical text, matched with artist Michele Wood's daring vision, captures the feel of each style of music and pays tribute to the musicians who gave the music life.

Teacher worthy.......2007-01-05
I have used this book collaboratively with 3 & 4th grades at an inner city school. The rich information and fantastic illustrations are a perfect stimulant to lessons in language arts as well as dance and painting.
Rejoice in the Music............2002-08-14
"I see the rhythm. I see the rhythm of our beginnings. I feel the pulse of a people and a land in harmony. I hear the legends told by the drum, the beats of our beliefs, the music of our ancient history..." From its roots in Africa and slave songs, to the birth of the blues, ragtime, swing, jazz, and gospel, to rhythm and blues, rock and roll, hip hop, funk, and rap, Toyomi Igus and Michele Wood trace the history of African American music. Ms Igus' lyrical free verse, rich in imagery and magic, is powerful and evocative as it swirls creatively around the page, and is complemented by Ms Wood's stunning illustrations, full of emotion and drama that captures both the feel of the music and the times. Each two page spread also includes a brief description of the musical style, and a marvelous timeline that sets that musical period in its larger, historical context. Perfect for youngsters 10 and older, I See The Rhythm is an inspiring feast for the eyes and ears that celebrates African American music and brings it to life on the page, and is a terrific introduction that shouldn't be missed.
Excellent resource for teachers of all grade levels.......2000-06-13
This is an excellent resource for the classroom. It depicts the history of African American music from Africa to rap/hip hop with vibrant art work matching the electric words! Wow!
A great multi-functional book.......2000-03-07
This book is a great book to include in a public library, home library, or school library. This book can be incorporated in many areas of learning. The author does an excellent job discussing the historical and physical features of African American music. Reading the book is like going on a musical journey. Some of the music types discussed are; jazz, ragtime, blues, gospel, and bebop. Each music type is well described, and Michele has included in each musical description a timeline, important figures associated with the music, and sample lyrics. Michele Wood also includes an activity in the book. She has put a little girl in each scene, and the reader has to locate her. It is not always easy. The little girl represents Michele when she was growing up. I highly recommend this book to young and old. Michele Wood has done an excellent job writing an interesting and informative book.
Now this is non-fiction!.......1999-12-19
This beautifully illustrated book tells the history of African-American music through poems and art. It is both informative and inspiring. I hate age-level labels on books like this. Adults will appreciate this book as much as children. I stumbled upon it at a new multicultural bookstore, discovering later that it was a Coretta Scott King winner. I can see why!

Customer Reviews:
Not for people with too much education or life experience.......2007-08-19
The tests in this book would probably work best for someone at the early college level. I say this because as an adult with a degree behind me, and years of work/life experience, I took all the tests . . . and found that I scored extremely high in every area. How does this help me? It doesn't. I believe the high scores are a result of life experience - I knew the answers - not because I am gifted in every area, but simply because I have lived long enough to learn the answers. So, in order for this test to measure a person's aptitude, they need to NOT have too much life experience. The only area in which a person may get acurate results even as an older adult is in Logic. Those questions did seem to test the way you think - can you think abstractly? That is an area that may be more difficult to "learn" - most of us are either abstract or concrete thinkers by nature.
Where do your Career Interests Lie?.......2007-08-10
If you feel like taking some assessment tests, to determine what career path is right for you, then you might enjoy this book, "Discover What Your Best At". This large paperback book was originally published in 1982, and it was then updated in 1990, and again in 1998. This book could be a useful tool for someone who is approaching the age where they need to choose a career, but are still undecided. It can also be helpful to those who have been established in the workforce for a long time, but feel that they are not properly utilizing their talents.
This is comprised of questionnaires and self- tests designed to help identify your personal skill set.I found the tests to be fairly easy overall, but I admit that there were a few questions that did require a lot more thinking through than others. The results of my tests didn't surprise me at all, and neither did the lists of recommended career occupations. Before I even took the tests, I predicted that the order I would score, from highest to lowest, would be Business, Clerical, Logic, Numeric, Social, and then Mechanical. My actual finish was Clerical, Business, Numeric, Logic, Social, and Mechanical.
This is not a book that gives advice and counseling to the interested party. It's just a book of self- tests, and a list of the occupations that match the results. The author doesn't really go into great detail about the selection of a career. This book is really meant as a starting point. Once you have an idea about the different career options that are compatible to your skill level, you can then conduct more research on those careers and decide if they are really best for you.
Overall, this is a decent book, and I think it will be most valuable to high school graduates who are curious about their own skills and aptitudes. For established workers, it probably won't tell you anything that you don't already know about yourself. Because of this, I can only rate this an average book overall.
helpful.......2007-08-01
This book is great for help in determing where your strengths are. A good book for anyone looking for a career path or vocation. The tests were very thorough.
DON'T Discover What You're Best at!.......2007-05-24
This book just gives you the standard little logic tests and addition problems and so on, minor skill tests. If you have any experience at all, you already know how to do most of these things--or you need to finish high school. I can do those things, because I have had to, not because I am 'best' at them. This book was absolutely no help to me.
Reveal what you can do.......2007-04-18
I worked with this book along with "Do What You Are" by Paul D. Tieger, Barbara Barron-Tieger, and fortunately found out a clear career direction.
This book is to test your aptitudes, i.e. the inner abilities to finish task. There are six types of aptitudes: business, clerical, logical, mechanical, numerical and social. After running a profound test you'll see how you score on each category. And each of the comprehensive careers listed requires specific kinds of aptitudes(either one, two, or three), so you'll know what you're able to do. And those not-easy-to-guess-what-it-means questions make the scores result not from personal preferences but the underlying inner capability. (Unlike some other tests it doesn't let your interests interfere with the decision-making)
But after finding out the proper careers you've got to do the research because this book only gives an outlined information about each one.
Since this book is only about capable careers, options are wide. So I also used "Do What You Are" to figure out what sorts of careers fit the type of functioning of my brain. Combined with aptitudes and personality type I narrowed the focus and essence of the suitable career turned out to be very close to what I felt like doing when I was a kid according to my mom. I now know where should I head to.
I recommend it!
