4 out of 5 stars What is a sourcebook? A display of old things! And a good 1.......2000-06-05

Taschen writes this is a sourcebook. It just shows where design comes from. What was done in that era. And this book does just that and does it good. No high-brow comment, just reproductions of pages of house-plans, chairs, sidetables, glass ceramics etc. So, if you want to know if your old chair has any historic relevance, look in this book and see if there is a design original, or you might own it! Emphasis on the US, England Scandivavia, Italy and the Netherlands.

1 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2000-05-31

Once you get past the lovely cover, the interior of this book consists entirely of magazine pages from the 1950's reproduced wholesale. While that means authenticity, it also means small, uninspiring black and white photography. Like looking at an old magazine, not the beautiful graphics one usually expects from Taschen.

4 out of 5 stars MORE MODERN THAN YOU!.......2000-05-17

An absolute must have for anyone with a love for the modernist design movement of the 50's and 60's, or if you're looking to stay consistent with a modernist theme while redecorating. It's so sleek and plastic and modular. I love it! And in the tradition of Taschen books, the price is well worth it!

Forget rumors about married people living longer, or that single people are miserable, or that two can live as cheaply as one: married people started these rumors out of pure jealousy. Which inspired single freelance humorist Allia Zobel to correct the record. Joined by New Yorker cartoonist Roz Chast in her first-ever collaborative effort, the authors refute the bad rap singles have gotten with dozens of insightful, irrefutable reasons to celebrate living alone. 138,000 copies in print. Illustrated by Roz Chast.

              4 out of 5 stars Cute........2006-03-16

This is just a short book with humorous reasons why it's better to be single. It's true, being single is great and here are some reasons why...
*You never have to watch Monday Night Football
*You can use all the hot water
*You can eat cold pizza for breakfast and jellybeans & coke for dinner
*My personal fav... you can sit in a chair and read a novel cover to cover without feeling guilty.

Three cheers for the single life!!

5 out of 5 stars The glass is half full.......2001-03-22

This simple, short little book is a great, lighthearted reminder of all the positive and enjoyable things there are about being single. It may even elicit a smug smile to know that there are a lot of Marrieds out there who are secretly envious of your independent life.

4 out of 5 stars Fun Fluff for the Bubble Bath.......2001-01-19

This is an excellent book for people who don't take themselves or their unsightly habits to seriously. It's one of the first things I pick up after any breakup no matter how minor. Not for serious inspiration, but just for a laugh. It's a great thing to lend out to any woman who's over the guy, but needs a little push to get her over the IDEA of the guy. And the illustrations are great.

1 out of 5 stars The Joy of Being Single.......2000-04-03

This is a joke book for divorces who want to be slobs. I found it to be sad.

4 out of 5 stars Fun and Funny!.......1998-08-11

20 reasons why it's better to be single, with color sketchbook illustrations - and the illos (not to mention the reasons) are often quite funny - the gal in the illos looks pretty average (if a bit on the geeky side), and her cat is a riot! Anyway, for anyone feeling bad about being single, this is a fun read! And it makes you think about and appreciate some things you've probably taken for granted.

A light and optimistic book, verging at times on silliness, Wendy Keller's song of praise to single motherhood should be an encouragement to anyone who has gone on a date with a smear of baby poop on her shirtsleeve. In very brief chapters, she describes such trials as the Homework Wars, her attempts to find balance, and her recurrent self-doubt as a parent. She provides quotes from her favorite performers and books, especially Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi's Finding Flow, which advocates finding pleasure in duty.

Keller's emphasis on the positive can be very funny, as in her chapter on worry, "Crying in the Dark," in which she suggests facing the Worst Thing That Can Possibly Happen, and then realizing how you could survive it. "Let's say you get evicted," she argues. "It's better than being executed at dawn for a crime you didn't commit and having your child raised by the state to hate your memory. There are plenty of examples in history of this happening."

On a more sober note, the author's daughter Sophia is her third child. The first two were killed in a car crash. Maybe it is this horrific loss that has helped focus Keller's mind on how much is possible, after all, and on how not to waste precious present moments by brooding about the past or future. --Regina Marler

              Book Description

              A Word about Motherhood

              The greatest love is a mother's, then a dog's, then a sweetheart's. —Polish proverb

The hand that rocks the cradle rules the world.

              —German proverb

The foundations of eternity are laid in the nursery. —WK

Before I had children, I had six theories on how they should be raised. Now I have five children and no theories.

              —Ronald Kelly, minister, father

The very word “motherhood” conjures up a thousand pictures in our heads. The famous portraits of Mother and Child, the ideals we had for our children when they were small, the plans we made for our beloved child when we were pregnant, even sometimes ideas we had about what motherhood would be like from the vantage point of our teenage years.

Some of us swore we'd do it differently than our mothers had, and others wanted to be similar in our style. Some of us wished to marry and have babies when we were grown ups, and others wanted to postpone babies, maybe indefinitely, while we cured cancer or made millions or showed men how powerful we really are.

Our attitudes about motherhood change as we have children and with the circumstances of their births and lives. You may be finding that the ideal life you'd planned to provide your child is a little harder to provide than you'd hoped, or even that the child you got isn't quite the child you expected. You may find, like most of us do, that motherhood and parenthood in general are experiences beyond description, so much better and so very different than anything you'd planned on.

Motherhood is mysterious, magical, a whirl of drudgery and joy, carpools and kid caresses, sleepless nights and peak moments, the greatest joys, and the deepest sorrows. It is every emotion in the spectrum and every thought of selfless love that ever existed in the universe. Some say it is the closest thing to pure love that exists on Earth.

But isn't it funny how life turns out? I wanted a ballerina and I got a tomboy. Megan up the block was sure she'd get a singer, and instead she got a budding actor with almost no musical skills. Barry's son was supposed to follow Dad into the law. At twenty-seven, he shows no signs of following. They're their own little people, aren't they? So what does that make our job?

Remember when your mother wished on you a child just like yourself? Maybe you got that kid, and maybe not, and maybe that was a blessing from your mom, but maybe it was a curse. Either way, here you are, in the circumstances of your life as it is today. Here you are with your kid(s) in your house with your job and your life, and if you are doing this all alone, then it is all up to you.

Like everything else, that's a blessing and a curse. You have the liberty to craft the mind, heart, self-esteem, and virtues of the child entrusted to your care. You also have all the responsibility to provide structure, discipline, meals, clothes, a roof, and a warm bed for this little person.

When life doesn't match your expectations, when the “Happily Ever After” ends and the next chapter of your life begins, it's easy to forget the most important things. It's easy to forget there is joy in the simple fact that you are alive and you have a good mind. It's possible to forget for a moment that you are in control of your circumstances and that at any point you can create a whole new kind of tomorrow for your family. In any moment, there are things to be sad about and things to rejoice about. Your quality of life will be enhanced by remembering to celebrate the joys of single motherhood and soaring above it on the wings of your sometimes-angelic children.

Motherhood is a brief and precious time in our lives. Ask any woman, married or single, who has raised a family and watched each child fly the nest. She'll tell you it doesn't really last long, it just seems like it when you can't sleep through the night that first year, or when you and your child wage daily skirmishes. The period from birth to college or their first apartment seems like a long time, but in retrospect went like a flash. This little human being we've been given, with all her or his uniqueness, perfections, and imperfections, is ours to hold, ours to mold, for such a little while. Cherish that time!

You've heard “The hand that rocks the cradle rules the world.” Your child's destiny is in your power. Will you craft a neurotic little being who is a tyrant over the other people in his life? Will you indulge a spoiled child who grows up to embarrass you? Or will you set the plan, stay the course, be there with an open heart and open arms, nurturing, supporting, and loving this person who has been given into your care?

The time when we have influence over our children is terribly short. It's a solar flare on the timescape of our existence. The foundations of eternity are laid in the nursery. The kind of mother you are capable of being at your best is precisely the kind of mother your child needs. Here's to you, for caring enough to be the very best.

I've been a single mom for several years now, after a messy divorce. This book spoke to my soul. I cried, I laughed, I felt like I'd spoken with a longlost girlfriend for hours when I finished it. Ms. Keller writes beautifully, and the book is perfect for all us single moms out here. She made me feel like I was doing a great job of mothering, and gave me ideas to do even better. I loved this book! Thank you!

              5 out of 5 stars FINALLY.......2007-09-27

Finally ... a book that reassures the smart, attractive, creative, passionate, independent single people of the world that they're not defective because they're single and choose to stay that way.

2 out of 5 stars Few good points - but fairly dry overall.......2005-12-20

Whether you are single by choice or have recently found yourself to be single, I really don't recommend this book. Although the little signposts throughout the book entitled "Your Singles Advantage" were great, I found this book to be rather dry. The author makes some good points for singles...learning to stand on your own. This doesn't only mean taking care of yourself: it means understanding your own personality. Only on your own, without connecting your life to somebody else's, can you fully explore your needs, wants, likes, dislikes, and goals.
Most people have a lot of living to do before they're truly ready to settle into responsible family lives. Marrying before you've sown your wild oats may have caused you to bring a lot of unnecessary baggage into the relationship. There's the opportunity to finally be able to do things you previously felt inhibited doing. Many people find that as time goes by, once they've gotten over their grief, they take on major career changes, new hobbies and interests, personal growth.

5 out of 5 stars No stigma on being single-enjoy.......2004-04-11

I read this book in the mid-80's. Bought it for $1.00 at a sidewalk sale. Read it; thoroughly enjoyed it; practiced what it preached and mistakenly lent it to some co-workers to read. Never got it back. I want to buy another copy, now. It has made my life as a single much more enjoyable and without excuses or apologies. It's my life and I live it to the full. Ms. Harayda hits the nail on the head every time. Great read even now in the 2000's.

A "must read" book for all "singles" out there! I first read this book when it came out in the 80's and liked it very much at that time. I re-read it again recently and found that I had been following many of the suggestions which Ms.Harayda makes for single people and have had many positive results. If you are single-read this book!

                    Book Description

According to Jim and Tim, "If duct tape isn't the answer, then you must be asking the wrong question!" To prove it, they have collected the best and funniest questions and answers from the popular Stump the Duct Tape Guys section of their massive Web site (www.ducttapeguys.com), where real people submit problems that you wouldn't think could be fixed with duct tape. The Duct Tape Guys put on their thinking caps (made entirely out of duct tape, of course) and come up with solutions that never fail to satisfy, or at least amuse, their audience. From broken toasters to broken hearts, the Duct Tape Guys find a way to show that "It ain't broke, it just lacks duct tape."

I've been a fan of the Duct Tape Guys since their first book (1994). This is their seventh book and it's their most readable (sitting in your favorite chair with a cup of coffee - or can of beer) book to date. Their "breathtaking stupidity" provides for great light-hearted duct tape humor in an easy-to-read, well-crafted, question and answer format. This will definitely be the next must-buy gift for the duct tape lovers in my life.

4 out of 5 stars Series of mostly interesting interviews........2000-07-07

This book is a compilation of interviews with various B-movie queens of various eras. It's fairly frank and unassuming, so it's also often rather prosaic. After all, these are mostly working women who had (or have) careers in a relatively unglamorous area of film.

Ms. Shepard is interviewing her peers, in essence and this is not exactly a hard-hitting exposé, which is fine, but it's perhaps not entirely factual in places.

Nonetheless, it's difficult not to empathize with these women and their aspirations and well as what they have had to endure in their struggles to reach them, and ultimately the book is to be commended for shining some light in that area.

5 out of 5 stars Just Who Are The Ladies Making All Those B-Movies?.......1996-10-11

Jewel Shepard took it upon herself to contact a dozen or so of the past and current B-Movie Queens. Jewel's book contains her interviews, along with photos, of some of the most popular B-Movie and "Scream Queens" from the 50's to the present.

Jewel's questions draw out the people behind the images on the screen and gives their insights into the B-Movie business. I found Jewel's interviews funny and interesting. Most of the women knew what they were doing and saw B-Movies as an opening to bigger and better things.

5 out of 5 stars A Bible For The Entrepreneural Manager.......2007-06-29

I'm an executive in a highly competitive and aggressive sales organization with a colorful mix of "creative" and "analytical" minds. Beyond the valuable "personal organizational system" offered, this book is a powerful awareness tool for those expected to develop people's potential into bottom-line benefits; offering leaders a better understanding of how the two types of minds experience and interact with their world, and then how to synchronize them into a highly efficient go-to-market machine. It's very easy to make this book about you but, its true value is in making it work for those that work for and with you - then, everyone wins... especially, your customer!

5 out of 5 stars Creative People Organizing.......2007-04-05

As a professional organizer I find this book very useful and insightful. The authors present the information in a very easy and fun to read manor without a lot of useless extras. They also write in a positive tone to accept ones organizing challenges and accept them but they also give great examples on how to overcome them and become right-brain organized people. I would recommend this book to any one having or know someone with organizing challenges in their own homes and businesses. I would also recommend this book for professional organizers to read wanting to help their more creative clients.

5 out of 5 stars New Understanding for Clutterers.......2006-01-30

I was often puzzled by my inability to stick with the organizing tips from the many books I've read on the topic. Finally I discovered this book. It explained to me the wall-to-wall stacks of paper that blanketed my office.
My need to keep my work visible and accessible led to this "all out" array, but it also was hard to manage and retrieve. At last, I could understand where my resistance to traditional organizing originated.
You will recognize a lot of the tips here from other books on organizing, but the author relates them to the creative mind and how it applies to your style. It also explained to me when my cleaning efforts often bogged down due to my "global" view. Getting me to focus on detail and tackle one small part, made it all more manageable.

5 out of 5 stars Hope for the organizationally challenged.......2004-10-26

This is a wonderful book that hones right into the heart of the causes of the organizational challenges of many creative people. I thought I was a hopeless case until I read this book. It gave me so much hope and helped me to identify the way my thinking style affected my disorganization. It helped me to find new ways to overcome my lack of order and I am now much more confident and organized.

It's rather amusing that the few negative customer reviews actually prove one of the major points of this book: That left brain people have little understanding of the difficulties experienced by creative people, and, because of their analytical (and therefore judgmental) inclinations, they tend to be critical and think that there should be only hard and fast organizing rules, rather than methods that can be molded to individual needs.

This book is a classic, on book shelves for over ten years, and is the organizing "bible" of creative people. Because I personally know a professional organizer, I know that it was chosen by the National Association of Professional Organizers as a study guide for it's members and it is still regularly recommended by many professional organizers to their clients.

My recommendation: If you are the creative type and experience on-going organizational problems, buy this book! You will see yourself on every page. It changed my life, and it could change yours!

                        5 out of 5 stars If you're right-brained, this book works.......2004-02-13

I have read this book about twice now and I believe the authors completely understand right-brained (RB) people and wrote the book in a way that works well for RB's. My belief is that the people that gave this less of a review were perhaps not as much in the RB mode as they suspected. The book uses diagrams, formatting, summaries, examples and specific advice very well, making it easy for us RBs to understand why we're different and how to make the most of it.
