Book Description

Pandora was the "pagan Eve," and she is one of the rare mythological figures to have retained vitality up to our day. Glorified by Calderon, Voltaire, and Goethe, she is familiar to all of us, and "Pandora's box" is a household word. In this classic study Dora and Erwin Panofsky trace the history of Pandora and of Pandora's box in European literature and art from Roman times to the present.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Learned and fascinating, with great pictures.......2005-03-26

My only reason for writing anything about this book - a classic co-written by Erwin Panofsky, a scholar of enormous learning - is to rectify the absurd fact that the child who reviewed it before me gave it 1 star (s/he was looking for a pop-up book) and thus ruined its Customer Rating. If you are interested in iconography, the development of myths, or the origin (surprisingly late) of Pandora's Box, you will certainly enjoy this fine work.

                  Book Description

Legends say that when it snows, it is because the snow princess is crying. From CLAMP, creators of Chobits and Cardcaptor Sakura, comes a collection of five tragic tales, all connected by the bond of snow. Shirahime-syo is CLAMP's return to traditional Japanese form and storytelling. Featuring luscious watercolors and gentle brushstrokes, it is a beautiful departure from CLAMP's usual fare. Discover for yourself the mystery behind the snow...

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful pictures and stories..........2006-11-16

I love manga, especially this book (which acutally really started me on manga... I was more into anime before this). I recieved it as a present last Christmas and read it as soon as I could. It is rather repetitive, I have to admit (namely, the quote about the snowflakes being tears of the snow goddess), but the plots and everything else make up for it by far. All the stories are about love and loss, perfect for shojo lovers like me. Buy it... and probably in hardcover, as you'll read it a lot during the snowy days at home. (Mine personally is a paperback and is bent because I have read it so much.) Highly reccommended. =)

5 out of 5 stars "They say that reviews are the tears of consumers...".......2004-06-21

A stunning, wonderfully-painted, atmospheric collection of short stories all focusing on the all-encompassing snow and a few unlucky people caught in it. This book was a thing of beauty, both the stories and the watercolored art would be fantastic on their own, but together, well, it's magical.

I will not go into the short stories, but I will say this: When you tire of typical manga fare (martial arts/gunplay), come check out Shirahime-Syo. A wonderfully written, enjoyably depressing, mythology-based anthology that almost made me cry, even at 16.

5 out of 5 stars This book almost made me cry.......2004-06-20

I just got this and I have already read it three times! (Even if it is REALLY depressing.) The artwork is fantastic, especially the watercolour pages, and the stories are wonderfully done. The only problem I had with it, though very trivial, is that this book is advertized to have 5 stories, but actually, the last "story" is a continuation of the first one. I love this book!

3 out of 5 stars Not as impressive...but dont ignore it its definitely good.........2004-02-28

First of all, I'd like to clear up the confusion about this being a book consisting of *five* short stories: its not. there is simply an introduction and a conclusion that link the three short stories together. This is a subtle, and beautiful work by the artistic team CLAMP. Despite prejudices against them, they are capable of wayy more than cutsie manga like card captor sakura, clamp school detectives and others. I admire their adversity, but this particular work earned only 3 of 5 stars...4 stars for manga that i really like, 5 stars for ground breaking manga (like Nausicaa). While this is a refreshingly different work, and the stories are all excellent in themselves, i felt that the brevity and absolute lack of characterization (except in "On Wolf Mountain") annoying. the stories were a bit repetative as well...and they ARE short stories so characterization is not something that is emphasized. Now that i have ranted and raved, i am (strangely enough) going to recommend this to anybody who loves a) traditional japanese storytelling/samurai storylines (this is shojo tho...and i am a huge fan of princess mononoke) b) enjoys tragedy or c) likes to collect mangas that depart from the beaten trail. Overall excellent, but overrated, if that is possible... It is one of the ones that you should probably look for on discount, or wait until the softcover version is released from Tokyopop.

5 out of 5 stars Unforgettable, melancholy, and superbly beautiful..........2003-12-25

'Shirahime Syo' is a manga beyond description - one of the best works that CLAMP ever produced. I bought an import two years prior to buying the domestic version, and was blown away by its art. CLAMP, instead of sticking with their G-pen nibs and screentones, decided to go back to the traditional Japanese form of brush art. What you get are elegant brushstrokes and ink washes for shading, which gives 'Shirahime Syo' its atmosphere, its mood, and its wintry splendor in which tragedy exists on so many fronts. There is also the added bonus of color pages in the beginning, which opens up the story in a mysterious way, and entices you to read further.

The three stories are quite beautiful and elegant in the old Heian tradition. The first one was heartbreaking, and one must look beyond the superstitions that the villagers believed in. The second one is a tale of unforsaken love even through the years. Unlike the first review above, when the girl describes herself becoming a flower, it's not literal. The girl, in true Japanese sense, wishes to preserve her beauty and youth for her lover - in the sense, being like a delicate ice flower that would never fade. The third story shows that even spirits can be caring, especially for a lost young samurai who pines for his lover.

Tokyopop surprised me with their quick claim to the domestic release, and the hardcover treatment deserves merit. What they had accomplished with 'Clover' by emulating the Japanese versions, they did better with 'Shirahime Sho.' Hardcover books are more durable, and the bigger size looks good on the shelf. The translations are very nice, managing to preserve Nanase's script.

This is a manga that any CLAMP fan should pick up. The difference in style and technique is unique. CLAMP's older works always hold truer to their stories and art. Unlike what Tokyopop claims, 'Shirahime Syo' wasn't published in Japan in 2001; an earlier version was published in 1992.

                      Book Description

In Greendale, Neil Young masterfully blended his activist bent with a poetic perversity and the irresistible musical hooks that have made him a legend. In his compelling tale of a multi-generational family living in a small town in California, a cop is murdered, Cousin Jed is arrested, Grandpa confronts the subsequent media onslaught with tragic results and granddaughter Sun Green becomes an environmental activist. Joining the music CD, the elaborately-staged concerts, the movie, and the DVD, this book provides a satisfying literary and visual complement to the multimedia masterpiece that is Neil Young's Greendale.

This book purports to be a companion/expansion to Neil Young's album, but all it really is is a reprinting of the lyrics next to a neat boxed cartoon. On the left page is a small block or two of lyrics and the opposite page contains the accompanying cartoon. The album liner notes are reprinted here as well. There is a small section depicting the characters and giving brief information on their background. The last thirty-six pages or so are paintings by James Mazzeo... for some reason. He's the artist who did lots of material for the stage show, but none of the paintings reproduced for the book have anything to do with Greendale whatsoever...

Altogether, it's a very nice companion to the album, but it is not necessary because it does not really add anything to the music. If you can spare the money for it, it will make a nice addition to your library, but otherwise, skip it.

For years, Warren Bennis has written about leadership in works such as Learning to Lead, Beyond Leadership, and the bestselling On Becoming a Leader. His aim in these well-received titles was to catalog the traits and styles of leadership that help individuals excel in their work. In his new book (and already another bestseller) Organizing Genius, Bennis declares the age of the empowered individual ended: what matters now is "collaborative advantage" and the assembling of powerful teams. Drawing from six case studies that include Xerox's PARC labs, the 1992 Clinton campaign, and Disney animation studios, Bennis and coauthor Patricia Biederman distill the characteristics of successful collaboration, showing how talent can be pooled and managed for greater results than any individual is capable of producing. Organized in easily digested chapters and written in clear, concise prose, Organizing Genius will be useful to folks finding their way in new organizational structures. The lessons Bennis and Biederman offer in the final chapter of the book don't constitute the obvious advice most business books convey; these are real experiences gleaned from the stories of collaboration they surveyed.

4 out of 5 stars I enjoyed reading this book ..........2007-02-08

Bought this book after a recommendation from Michael Gerber's website (E-Myth). It's interesting to see how real entreprenuers think, and how they interact in a group setting (i.e., how to be a leader) amongst highly intelligent and motivated employees (i.e., arrogant, know-it-all's). I especially liked the chapter on Walt Disney. I give it 4 stars because it's an enjoyable and insightful bedtime read.

5 out of 5 stars Not from instruction---but from story........2006-11-06

I selected this book as a core text for the leadership development program on collaboration for my company. Bennis is simply the gold standard. In the glut of "Here's one thing that will change your life, move your cheese or fill your bucket simplistic and even dangerous books that cram the shelves and compete for our attention" this book stands out because it lucidly and clearly tells compelling stories. I don't know who Patricia Biederman is; but I'm guessing she is responsible for the clarity of the prose here. And that's reason enough to put her name on the front cover.

The responsibility I am charged with when I go to work everyday is to build leadership development that can impact business results.

This book can hel me do that because it teaches not by instruction---but by story.

5 out of 5 stars Successful Structures for Super Team Perfomance.......2006-06-13

This is an informative book on leadership qualities and insights by Warren Bennis, who is a distinguished professor of business administration at USC, and who has also advised at least four presidents. Bennis discusses four organizations that were able to combine incredibly gifted people in such a synergy as to create hitherto unknown super-accomplishments: Walt Disney Studios with the first full-length animated film, Xerox and Apple with the first user friendly computer, Lockheed's Skunkworks with the first US jet fighter, and the Manhattan Project which yeilded the atomic bomb. What were the key ingredients to their success? What did they do wrong, but succeeded in spite of such matters? These questions are entertainingly answered in this book.
Among the fifteeen traits listed are: always having an enemy, seeing themselves as the underdogs, isolating themselves from unnecessary outside interferences, and hiring people that have both great ability and a talent for collaboration.

Warren Bennis and Patricia Ward Biederman describe the qualities that generate "Great Groups," capable of meaningful creative collaborations. Despite the myth of individual achievement and heroic leadership, the authors delve into major breakthroughs accomplished by group effort. Often Great Groups unite around the vision of a charismatic leader and work toward that leader's goal with obsessive commitment. Bennis and Biederman spend much of the book describing the workings of a half dozen such groups - from the Manhattan project to the founders of the Disney Studio to Bill Clinton's campaign team. These case histories read like individual short stories, but they each tell the saga of a driven creative collaboration. The authors conclude with lessons you can apply to bring the dedication of Great Groups to bear within your organization. We recommend this clearly written, logically organized book to leaders and collaborators in any industry, with two caveats. First, acquiring the requisite charisma is up to you. And, second, as to the authors' fulsome praise of obsessive work habits, well, that's so `90s.

5 out of 5 stars Really Great Insights.......2004-03-19

I got tremendous value out of this book. While I did not see or connect with all the Great Groups that Bennis used as case studies, there are powerful ideas and insights in every one of them. I have summarzied his 15 "Take Home Lessons" in a one page handout and include it in the materials for our School for Innovators and on operational Thinking Expeditions. I also got a video of "Fat Man & Little Boy" - the Manhattan Project (which is cited in the book) and have referenced it often as an example of a powerfully urgent Great Group coalesces and collabortes differently. For anyone trying to not just launch a fastforward team, but who also wants to inspire that team to greatness, this is a must read. Caution: this is not a "how to do it" book - rather it tells the story and paints the picture, and its up to the reader to take his or her own learnings and how to out of it (iontuitively).
