Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A beautiful biography --.......2006-12-18

-- or is it? Masereel's remarkable little book declines to explain itself.

These 165 expressive woodcuts present snapshots from the life of one man, or so we assume. He's not all that special - he's not a great hero, leader, or lover, though he's each at one point or another. He doesn't rise above or sink below anyone else, except in the usual ways. As with Copland's "Fanfare for the Common Man," this book celebrates the ordinary. And, when seen in such detail, the ordinary becomes quite extraordinary.

The book opens with the un-named man's arrival by train. The crowd and surroundings excite him, as does the mechanism of the train itself. Then, he's off to his new life in the city. We see that life in an uneven, even surreal pace. Masereel's vivid, expressive images hopscotch through the years of his life. Sequences of unrelated images seem to compress years into just a few pages. Other times, long sequences examine individual stories in detail - the adoption of a daughter, his happiness in her, and her final illness and death may be the most moving. It's a life-changing event, and sets the anonymous man off on a lengthy voyage, perhaps to lose himself or to find himself again. He returns to the city life, and eventually retires. The imagery changes radically at this point. It suggests Van Gogh's "Sunflowers" and "Starry Night," and also hints at Van Gogh's death.

Or maybe not. The imagery speaks volumes, but speaks a different volume to each viewer - and will probably speak differently to me when I read it again. Although it's an illustrated story, it's not for children. It is for anyone who wants to see the grandparents of today's illustrated fiction, or who appreciates woodcut in itself. This Dover edition is a beautiful reproduction, with richly saturated blacks but paper opaque enough to keep each page from bleeding through. It's easy to enjoy - so go ahead, enjoy it.

5 out of 5 stars Powerful Catalyst.......2000-05-23

Like the Tarot, the images here are universal and transformative. They have the additional benefit of a wry sense of humor and subtle undercurrents of a humanist sensibility.

A must have for any searcher or thinker.

5 out of 5 stars Pure Inspiration.......1999-05-01

When my sister gave me this book for my birthday, it was one of the greatest presents I ever received. I was inspired, comforted, and emboldened by Masereel's wordless tale of a questing spirit. Despite the fact that I've read it literally hundreds of times (almost every night when I was working in Calcutta), I always see something new in the subtle, highly expressive woodcuts. Besides the brilliance of his technique, the story Maserel tells is exciting, complex, hilarious and moving. A treaure I wouldn't trade for practically anything.

5 out of 5 stars reviewing the reviewer.......1998-08-24

I do not agree with the reviewer that wrote the following lines concerning Masereel's work: "We can no longer flip through it with the passion and mounting excitement which Mann describes in his introduction. For us, such journeys seem to end very close to where they began." This commentator seems to arrive at this statement from an overly-pessimistic outlook. Perhaps it would be better to comment merely on the genius of the work rather than make broad socialogical/philosophical judgements which are not well grounded, (or rather which are grounded in the reviewer's own pessimism). I suggest weekend outings as a alternative to staying home and reading a novel.

5 out of 5 stars a transcendant, wordless novel.......1996-06-01

Frans Masereel made this "Novel in 165 Woodcuts" in 1919. With these 165 beautifully stark images, Masereel tells the story of a man's life - his love, his grief, his awe, his despair - without using a single word. "Passionate Journey" unfolds like a silent film; its attempt to communicate the reality of a lived life across boundaries of language (and literacy) gives it a quality of spiritual striving and - ultimately - transcendence. A small, luminous masterpiece.

"Look at these powerful black-and-white figures, their features etched in light and shadow. You will be captivated from beginning to end..." - Thomas Mann

5 out of 5 stars More historic fashions.......2000-04-26

Those of us who are particularly interested in the early 19th century are always eagerly looking for more extant costume examples, and this year's calendar has several. The turn of the 18th century mantua is also a treat as there are so few of them illustrated anywhere. Ms. Queen has done her usual excellent job compiling the photos from a variety of museums. I can hardly wait to see next year's!

        4 out of 5 stars exquisite.......1999-12-26

While the primary focus of this calendar is on fashions from 1890-1910, there are a few examples of early 19th century dress plus one lovely embroidered mantua (a loose-fitting gown) from 1700. The main emphasis of this calendar is not so much on dress, however, as on the museums from which the featured items of clothing were selected. A different museum is showcased each month along with several items from it's collection. Information on how to contact each museum is also listed, including web addresses. Featured institutions include: Royal Ontario Museum, Old Sturbridge Village, Missouri Historical Association, Hillwood Museum and Gardens, Old State House, DAR Museum, Nevada State Museum and Goldstein Museum of Design.

5 out of 5 stars A Forgotten Gold Key Original!.......2006-03-29

I have to admit that I never read Gold Key Comics as a kid. I didn't know who Doctor Solar was until he was resurrected by Valiant Comics in the early 90's. But I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed reading this Archive Edition published by Dark Horse Comics. This hardcover edition reprints issues 15 - 22 of the original, Gold Key Doctor Solar series from the 1960's and presents readers with a fascinating character. In his introduction, Mike Baron refers to the art of Frank Bolle as scratchy, but if you compare Bolle's art to a lot of the stuff from Marvel and DC of the same period and I think it holds up quite well. It's certainly superior to say Don Heck and some other Silver Age artists.

One thing that stands out in these tales written by Paul S. Newman is his knowledge of science, specifically physics and nuclear physics. Newman isn't Stan Lee inventing contraptions like the Ultimate Nullifier. Clearly he either had more than a working knowledge of nuclear science or at least did his homework. He may have take his plots to the fantastic, but he seemed to have built them on a solid foundation of actual science. I don't know that I've ever read comic stories from the Silver Age that had a better grasp of scientific principles. Of course, I suppose this could have worked against the book if readers found the material to be a bit over their heads, though. Throughout most of the stories in this volume Solar is plagued by his arch-nemesis Dr. Nuro, who bares more than a slight resemblance in both looks and character to Lex Luthor.

In the opening story, straight out of the cold war 1960's, a colleague of Solar is distraught over the proliferation of nuclear weapons and gives a cryptic warning about something that will happen several weeks into the future before he dies of a heart attack. Solar uses his atomic abilities to travel to the exact time in the future that the warning gave. A bomb containing radio waves goes off, intended to render the worlds missiles useless, but instead causes the worldwide stockpile to launch, eventually tearing the world apart. Solar has to now try and travel back in time to stop the man from placing the bomb.

In "War of the Suns" the worlds scientists plan to build a small, nuclear sun and put it into orbit on the opposite side of our sun in order to keep the world in sunlight all the time. The reasoning being that with the ever growing population, farmers need to be able to grow food 24 hours a day to feed the masses. However before they can launch their miniature sun, Dr. Nuro tries to beat them to it with his untested atomic sun. Soon the small sun goes off its orbit and threatens to hit the Earth unless Doctor Solar can stop it in time.

Nuro then sacrifices one of his own loyal henchman in a bizarre experiment that turns the man into a giant comprised of fiery lava named Primo! Solar has found that his own powers have decreased because his body doesn't have enough mass to hold the atomic energy. Doc has to find a way to gain mass without size and battle this new terror. In another story, Nuro uses his robot sidekick Orun to discredit Solar. The robot is given an atomic heart that boosts his powers and then puts on a costume just likes Solar's so he can wreak havoc and have Solar get all the blame.

The great thing about this book is that you need not have read the first couple of volumes to know what's going on. The stories are self-contained and usually wrapped up by the end of the issue. The other great attraction of the book is the reprinted, painted covers by artist George Wilson. Those covers always made Gold Key comics stand out and they are simply gorgeous.

This book was very informative. The information on egg storage and incubation was invaluable. I also appreciated the section on caponization which was something I have been wanting to learn about. This book is very easy to understand, and the information that it contains has helped both me and my husband get our chicken project off to a great start. I liked this book so much in fact, that I gave my first copy to my Father-in-Law for his birthday! (He runs our other farm in WV, and is my partner on the Project) We refer to this book over the phone all the time. Even though he is a "Seasoned Farmer", he finds himself relying on the information just as much as I do. Great for beginners and pros!

I have checked this book out, along with many others, from our local library. This book has, by far, the most information. I was just beginning to raise chickens and it was a tremendous help to me.

3 out of 5 stars Raising Poultry the Modern Way.......1999-11-30

It seems to be an imformative book, but it doesn't define the different terms so that a beginner can understand what he's talking about. What is the chicken's vent or shank in plain language? Why does he assume I would know what culling is? What is a waddle? Just a few of the terms not defined and frequently not explained well.

5 out of 5 stars This book is the best book I have seen on raising poultry!.......1998-09-19

It covers a range of topics from "Should I Raise Poultry?" to "Meat Bird Production". It has information on choosing the best chicks, poultry housing and equipment, poultry house plans, brooding and rearing young stock, flock health and alot lots more. Great book to have on hand.

                    Book Description

Over the course of cinematic history, women screenwriters have played an essential role in the creation of the films we watch. The question of whether women write from a unique perspective has been debated since the silent era. Marsha McCreadie examines how this "female sensibility" has been defined and questions whether, in fact, it exists at all. The emergence of such films as Lost in Translation and Monster would seem to suggest that women screenwriters are moving in a new direction, heading away from the big-budget action movies that dominate Hollywood today. But there can always be found an Alexandra Seros, for instance, whose thrillers would seem to prove the opposite case. Working through these contradictions, Marsha McCreadie takes a captivating look at the words and lives of women screenwriters, allowing readers an otherwise unattainable look into the ever-growing and ever more essential world of women in film. Readers interested in film and women's studies will especially enjoy reading Marsha McCreadie's discussions of such films as Little Women, The Thomas Crown Affair, The Piano, Pollock, and Under the Tuscan Sun. Interviews with major women players in the movie business, including Sofia Coppola (Lost in Translation) and Emma Thompson (Sense and Sensibility), allow readers a unique chance to learn firsthand how women are trying to enter the business, how they pursue and approach the topics they love, and how they have managed to survive and prosper in the unforgiving world of modern cinema. By talking with writers working in Hollywood, Australia, New Zealand, and Europe, Marsha McCreadie provides film fans with an international perspective on the increasingly global film industry.

It's easily her best book yet, with wide-range appeal. It's sufficiently analytical and well-researched to pass muster with critics and academics -- I'm recommending it to my scriptwriting students at University of Houston - but it's also accessible enough to be a fun read for movie buffs.

As an American male, I developed an interest in the work of women filmmakers when I lived in Sydney and became something of an Aussie film booster. Gillian Armstrong and Jane Campion more than held their own against the Weirs and Schepisis as their early movies were released.

Two weeks ago, an aspiring screenwriter gave me Women Screenwriters Today, thinking I would enjoy it. And right she was-so much so that I bought copies for two friends. The author's choice of subjects is spot-on, her prose is eminently readable, and the personal histories are intriguing. Better still, the tips for novice screenwriters are worth their weight in gold. A very fine book all around!

                    5 out of 5 stars A pleasure to read.......2006-01-16

Witty, insightful, and gutsy from the first line to the last, Marsha McCreadie's bird's-eye view, "Women Screenwriters Today, Their Lives and Words," is a must-read for female writers of any ilk. An amalgamation of interviews, commentary, and history, McCreadie focuses on these women's works, their process, and their experiences breaking into the male-dominated film "business" (or, as McCreadie points out, "art" if you happen to be from a country that actually supports art and film, i.e. those "little" countries like Canada, France, and Australia). I enjoyed McCreadie's multi-layered investigation into women's vs. men's stories, structure, and form, a discussion bandied about at least since Virginia Woolf, who declared in A Room of One's Own, "the nerves that feed the brain seem to differ in men and women." Speaking as a novelist, I wish that I had read this book years ago and seen the references to women's writing as "fluid" (Stacy Cochran), or crosscutting through time, as McCreadie reiterates. It would have saved me years of questioning my own approach and style.

                          Book Description

This book traces the lives of the Snowdens, an African American family of musicians and farmers living in rural Knox County, Ohio. Howard L. Sacks and Judith Rose Sacks examine the Snowdens' musical and social exchanges with rural whites from the 1850s through the early 1920s and provide a detailed exploration of the claim that the Snowden family taught the song "Dixie" to Dan Emmett--the white musician and blackface minstrel credited with writing the song. This edition features a new introduction in which the authors discuss the public response to this controversial claim, and present new information on the Snowdens' musical and social experiences.

                            Book Description

Make pool's most difficult shots with ease. Control the table, out-think your opponent several shots ahead, and finish the game with a "top-shelf" shot. To play competitive matches, 8-Ball, or 9-Ball, you need to have the shots, read the table, and know the strategies to be successful.

First, Pool Player's Edge will show you how to execute

                            · stop, stun, and drag shots;
                            · frozen ball shots;
                            · banks and kicks;
                            · combinations and caroms; and
                            · jump shots and curve balls.

Second, you'll learn how to incorporate these skills and shots into your overall table strategy (mapping the table), which gives you a superior plan of attack in every game you play. Remember, when you can consistently set yourself up for the next shot, thinking ahead several shots becomes much easier—and more important.

Third, you'll learn winning tactics for 8-Ball and 9-Ball. The book's three-dimensional diagrams showing ball position, cue placement, and shot execution will help you grasp the intricacies of the two games. You'll make smarter decisions, be more confident, and perform your best consistently in competition.

This is a great book fot the beginner and average player, it has a lot of techniques that will help build a game or develop and improve that of an average player.

5 out of 5 stars The Pool Doctor Is Making House Calls.......2003-10-28

I really enjoyed Precision Pool, but I loved The Pool Player's Edge! While the first book gave its readers gems and tips in acquiring fundamentals and advanced skills, Kanov and Stauch provide an opportunity to troubleshoot and apply those skills in their latest book. The first section gives the reader tools to diagnose and fix problems in fundamentals, which everybody needs. I don't care who you are, when you are having trouble with your game, chances are it's your fundamentals that need tweaking. The "Quick Fixes" work great to get you back on track. But the real joy of this book is in the last two sections on 8-ball and 9-ball. The sections break each game into Phases - Opening Game, Middle Game and End Game that provide the reader with winning strategies and key shots to employ those strategies.

The book is filled with great diagrams, as usual, and further uses some great action photos of real pros to illustrate the concepts provided in the text. It is a real thinking-man's book and I enjoyed it thoroughly.

This small sequel to the Billiards for Beginners volume is really more for intermediate players. While a book like Byrned's Advanced or Play Your Best Pool will teach you a lot more, there are a handful of gems in here. My rule of thumb: Get every pool book you can find, because you'll learn at least one thing from each of them that the other authors forgot to write about. (This is especially true if you re-read them, more than once - you won't absorb every detail in every book the first time through. Absorb what you can, play for 6 months, and start re-reading; repeat). Anyway, yes, this book doesn't get very in-depth about anything (what do you expect for such a small publication?) But it's cheap. And at roughly the price of one (good) beer, how can you lose?

This was certainly one of the worst pool books I have ever read. I bought this book because it was supposed to be for advanced players. There was absolutely nothing in this book that I didn't already know. And I am certainly not advanced enough to know everything about pool. It is more a book of fundamentals than anything else. The book by George Fels was 100 times better. I would definately not recommend this book

                              Book Description

A framework for transforming business cultural clashes into cultural synergy.

As the global economy continues to expand, the need for cross-cultural understanding is a key component to business success. In the U.S. and Japan alone, more than two million business people are directly involved in cross-cultural business situations.

Atsushi Funakawa, a native of Japan who has studied and worked extensively in both the U.S. and Japan, outlines his innovative model for managing people across cultures. This comprehensive guide shows how the two cultures have very different ways of communicating that often lead to conflicts in which each blames the other for problems. Funakawa's framework ?Intercultural Business Management? has proven to be effective for transcAnding differences and breaking down communication barriers to form a constructive dialogue across cultures. By applying this revolutionary model, companies can remake themselves into truly geocentric organizations.
