Book Description

Ambiguity is inherent in images because visual perception is an interpretative act involving memory and imagination. Modern art has made this aspect of perception crucial to its relationship with the viewer. Potential Images, the first systematic exploration of this topic, considers those works of art that rely to a great degree on imaginative response.Dario Gamboni concentrates on the last decades of the nineteenth and first decades of the twentieth centuries, during which ambiguity and indeterminacy became defining characteristics of art. He examines how work by Redon, Gauguin, Rodin, Duchamp and numerous others sought to involve the beholder and reshaped artistic communication. Drawing on a vast range of sources, Gamboni finds striking parallels in other realms of contemporary culture and points to the intense exchanges that supported this process of cultural transformation. Potential Images also identifies the historical antecedents of this appeal to the viewer, finally proposing a conception of art in which artist and audience occupy symmetrical, equal and even interchangeable positions.

This is one of those rare books on art history which offers many new and very insightful interpretations on familiar works of art and the intent of well known artists. It broadens the reader's perspective in interpreting art. Outstanding! Richard Kelton

    Book Description

A tortured psychodrama about a painter who becomes obsessed with his model.

Ripple is a breakthrough graphic novel for Dave Cooper, creator of the wildly surreal and critically-acclaimed graphic novels Crumple and Suckle. Unlike those works, Ripple is a highly realistic story in terms of subject matter and drawing style. Martin is a floundering painter desperately attempting to pursue his fine art inclinations rather than toil in the world of commercial art. He hires a homely model, Tina, to pose for a series of "erotic" paintings that he hopes will be his breakthrough into the gallery world.

Over time, Martin and Tina's relationship evolves from a tenuous working relationship to a confused sexual one. Martin's initial repulsion for Tina slowly turns to attraction and eventually lust, causing him to re-evaluate his own notions of beauty and sexuality. Meanwhile, Tina's own motives behind working for Martin are slowly turned upside down as well, building the book towards its inevitably explosive end. Throughout it all, Ripple is a complex love story poked and prodded from all angles, from Martin and Tina's physical and emotional feelings toward each other, Martin's dishonesty to himself, Tina's self-loathing, and everything in between. Sad, funny, and often uncomfortably titillating, Ripple is a remarkably introspective graphic novel, rendered with kinetic realism in a pen technique that calls to mind a more controlled Edward Sorel and Jules Feiffer. 136 pages of three-color illustrations.

    5 out of 5 stars Uncomfortable...yet strangely tittilating...........2004-04-23

Reading this graphic novel is like being thrown into the deep end of the pool: you aren't expecting such blunt and graphic realism, but once you get into it, it's hard to take your eyes away. Take care: this isn't remotely for a kid of any age.
Since the summary is taken care of, I will say that I found myself thinking the story plays out almost like a FA (fat admirer) confession, of sorts. The ideas, art and ultimately the moral are much deeper and more personal than the brutish, roughly realistic and oftentimes disturbing art style would let on. The idea of large women being attractive is not found much in modern media, let alone in comic books. At first glance this appears to be a perverse sex romp, but don't judge this book by its cover.

5 out of 5 stars Ever read something that got under your skin?.......2000-11-02

Dave's art always makes my skin crawl, but it's also hypnotic -- the pages are interesting enough that I find myself skipping ahead without reading just to take in the landscapes that he's come up with (or the various fluids that might be dripping off his characters or buildings at any given time).

The story follows the beggings of Basil's life -- we see his birth, his first meeting with other humans (?), and his first experience with psychedaelics. And as this is a Dave Cooper book, there's lots of sex (none of it vanilla) and violence thrown into the mix!

    Highly recommended!

Winsor McCay's beautiful dreamscapes appeared in the New York Herald between 1905 and 1911, and the comic strip "Little Nemo" is considered by some to be the best, most brilliant comic strip ever published. Six-year-old Nemo (Latin for no one) falls asleep in his bed and is transported to the fantastical Slumberland--at the request of King Morpheus--where he encounters all kinds of strange creatures. At the end of each trip he wakes up, unsure of what was real and what was a dream. The exquisitely detailed, art-nouveau-style colored panels in this edition are reproduced from rare, vintage file-copy pages. Alongside George Herriman's bizarre Krazy Kat, McCay's work helped to create the grammar of comic art. This Little Nemo collection--an entertaining romp into Slumberland--also provides a lovely glimpse into the origins of an art form.

5 out of 5 stars Great comic, great draftsmanship, great art..........2005-05-07

What's to say? The greatest cartoon ever is out of print and can't be seen by anyone. Thankfully his animated work is available on DVD through Amazon and it's a humbling experience. Those were the first animated cartoons and in some respects they've seldom been equalled. His first one--THE first one--is a shocker, like some amateur building the Taj Mahal on the first try. In terms of raw, fantastic, dizzying, imagination coupled with stunning craftsmanship McCay may have no equal.

If this material is not made available pressure should be exerted somewhere, maybe with the Smithsonian, to release new editions. The lack of availability is almost criminal: like finding out that Don Quixote's gone out of print or something. Really, I'm not being hyperbolic. For all the interest there is in comic art these days, all the Manga, Fantastic Fours and graphic novels, this has to be accepted as the medium's Shakespeare.

5 out of 5 stars The first volume of Winsor McCay's classic comic strip.......2002-11-11

Winsor McCay's "Little Nemo in Slumberland" is a rare combination of artistry and imagination that deserves to be considered the first classic comic strip. "The Yellow Kid" came first, but it never demonstrated the superb craftsmanship of McCay's work, which is done in a distinctive "art nouveau" style that presages the coming of surrealism. Within the frames of his story McCay was able to create illusions of vast size and space, showing a word that was remarkably futuristic. Each of Little Nemo's weekly adventures told of a dream of the tousle-haired boy (of about six?) and concluded with him falling out of bed or waking up. McCay's son Robert served as the model for Nemo. Before working on the Slumberland strips McCay had experimented with other comics including "Little Sammy Sneeze," "Hungry Henriette," "Poor Jake," "Tales of Jungle Imps," and "Dream of the Rarebit Fiend" (the last one under the pseudonym Silas), but none of them even hinted at the splendor of "Little Nemo." In 1909 McCay would go on to create "Gertie the Dinosaur," the first commercially successful animated cartoon, which is probably how most people know of McCay's work. But that can only be because they have yet to be exposed to this comic strip.

The "Little Nemo in Slumberland" comics in this book originally appeared in the "New York Herald" Sunday color supplement from October 15, 1905 to March 31, 1907 and are faithfully reproduced in their original colors from rare, vintage file-copy pages in the hands of a few choice collectors. There is even a special strip that appeared in the European edition of the "Herald" that was never printed in the U.S. The strip continued until 1911 and those strips are published in the other volumes in this series. In these early adventures Little Nemo first enters Slumberland and learns to cope with his unpredictable flying bed, pursues the beautiful Princess of Slumber, searches for the castle of King Morpheus, and endures the ministrations of Dr. Pill. Nemo also meets up with the devilish Flip, a green-faced clown in a plug hat and ermine collared jacket, who starts off always trying to summon the Dawn and wake Nemo from his dreams but then becomes our little heroes boon companion in his Slumberland adventures which involved an impressive array of strange giants, beautiful mermaids, humongous elephants, mysterious space creatures, exotic parades, fantastic dirigible rides, a jolly green dragon, and anything else McCay could imagine.

By both artistic and historical standards "Little Nemo in Slumberland" is the first truly great comic strip. When you look at the great strips that followed, such as George Herriman's "Krazy Kat," George McManus' "Bringing Up Father," Bud Fisher's "Mutt and Jeff," and Frank King's "Gasoline Alley," they are all decidedly different from what McCay was doing, although the use of "art nouveau" interiors and zany byplay by McManus is clearly an homage to "Little Nemo" as far as I am concerned. There is a sense in which those who see nothing similar appearing on the funny pages until Bill Watterson's "Calvin and Hobbes" have a point, although I would acknowledge Snoopy's imaginative life in "Peanuts" as well.

This volume includes "Perchance to Dream," an essay by Richard Marschall, who I think was the single biggest contributor of the strips reprinted in this volume. The essay provides a concise summary of McCay's life and career, with examples of some of his earlier work, "Little Nemo" postcards, and an incredibly detailed editorial cartoon. But the most important thing is that Marschall's efforts have preserved the premier American comic strip for the enjoyment of posterity. There has never been a more magical comic strip. Never.

4 out of 5 stars Before Calvin, there was Nemo ..........2000-08-08

Long before a little boy and his tiger explored the imagination with wry social commentary and surrealism, Winsor McCay did the same with this amazing series of full page newspaper comics. This is a veritable treasure trove of comics history.

Admittedly, the jokes are not the same as Calvin and Hobbes so do not expect the same feelings. I find that Nemo evokes more feelings of wonder and delight while C and H brings about the hearty "guffaw". Also, the ending of every episode is exactly the same in that Nemo awakes to find the night's adventures were all within his head.

On the other hand, this book gives wonderful background of McCay and his world as well as beautiful reprints of the original prints.

I would heartily recommend this to anyone who enjoys fantasy, childhood, comics, or the dreams of past days.

5 out of 5 stars Winsor McCay was more important then Walt Disney !!.......1998-12-10

Winsor McCay has been forgotten by the mainstream Nostalgia R' US spoon-fed media circus that we are all tapped into. Winsor McCay was a pioneering creative genius. He may not have been the very first motion picture animator but created some of the first animated shorts which featured CHARACTERS. His first was Gertie the Dinosaur. McCay would actually tour with his short and interact with the dinosaur on the screen, making it roll over and other tricks. McCay's Little Nemo is a feast

for the eyes. His eye for detail gives us a window to the early days of the 20th Century. The characters are completly fantastic. He was decades ahead of his time.

5 out of 5 stars The Fantastic Dreamworld of Little Nemo.......1998-12-07

Although originally published as a weekly comic strip at the turn of the century, time has hardly diminished the charm or imaginative experiences of Little Nemo. As an unscripted character in his episodic dreams, a little boy named Nemo endeavors to keep up with the developments in "Slumberland" as they rapidly unfold. Recurrent characters show up to join in on the adventures, usually already in progress, and to clue Nemo in on where he is expected to go. As in dreams, the logic is usually skewed, and the storylines quickly gain momentum till they peak in a cataclysmic event that ultimately awakens Little Nemo. The wonderfully illogical development of the dreams are still as fresh today as they were a century ago. The only reminder of the era they came from is the quaint clothing and manner of the characters. The innovative story developments, though, are still uniquely fresh, having come from the visionary mind of Winsor McCay, who is credited with being the father of modern animation.

      Book Description

The book teaches skills and techniques in a way that not only provides an understanding of MAX X and its functionality but also how to apply those tools to a normal work environment by using a single, comprehensive project. Each chapter contains a section that provides an explanation of the tools, features and techniques being used, some sample exercises for reinforcement, and some of the artistic insight behind the process. The chapter concludes with the "workshop" section, which walks the reader through a series of step-by-step tutorials that culminate into a final, working project by the end of the book.

The tear card, color section, tips, notes and sidebars are filled with expert advice and supplemental information and together with the chapter material provide the reader with an invaluable resource that they can return to time and again.

      Amazon.com

3ds max 4 Workshop is very appealing in a number of ways. For one, the entire book is primarily focused on creating a single film, from sketching out ideas on paper to creating the final end credits. Also, the inside front and back covers of the book include a handy list of keyboard shortcuts, and a two-page tear-out examines the interface and defines every icon and palette.

While the book opens with the usual examination and explanation of the interface, the remainder breaks from the pack and introduces the tool set on an as-needed basis. The goal of the book is to create a sci-fi short film while teaching the hows and whys of the Max 4 tool set. This philosophy works very well, introducing tools based on need rather than just for the sake of the tool, and an ample number of screen shots clarify all instructions.

Over the course of the book's nine chapters, just about every major tool is used, from the various ways of modeling to adding surface detail to setting up bones and using kinematics for animation, through final rendering and compositing using Video Post.

3ds max 4 Workshop is not a handbook or reference, but more of a series of tutorials. This style of book makes a fine companion to the program's manuals and other 3ds max reference books, as it describes tools and techniques in a more in-context light. Designed for new Max users, the book goes out of its way to use features new to 3ds max 4, which are noted with a specific icon throughout the book. The sketch-to-final render examples are priceless, and the easygoing style of the text makes working through the chapters a breeze. --Mike Caputo

If you are an aspiring artist (with a copy of 3d max), interested in divulging further into the world of 3D, but don't know much about it...
      THIS IS FOR YOU!

With very good wording and layout, this book sets out to teach and enlighten you in a number of different subjects, not just 3ds max. I found Duane Loose's collection of quotes and tips from other artistic professionals invaluable. And among other things, his advice on storytelling and pre-visualizing soon to be eye-candy for YOUR viewers is also invaluable. Not to mention, the hands on training is typically as easy and rewarding as pie.

I worship this book even though I am a max v5 user and this book was written during the v4 period. Although I am not through it all yet, so far there hasn't been much confusion due to missing/changed layouts or options.

The only reason I neglected this book of a single star is because I wished for further detail during some of the beginning chapters, like the ones which detail the process which a true artist takes in order to appeal to his audience. Colored pictorials would be nice too, by the way. But then again, what IS a 5 star book?

BUY THIS BOOK AND LET IT OWN YOU. Because remember: THE THINGS YOU OWN END UP OWNING YOU...
But sometimes, this is what you want, and this is one of those times.

      Any questions?

This book provides a lot of useful info for learning 3DS MAX 4 but while reading it I felt that the book was only explaining to me how to use 3DS MAX 4 for the purpose of modeling the 6 scene short film in the book. There are also many typos in the book and I find that for people learning to use 3DS it is hard to follow the authors instructions.

4 out of 5 stars 3DS max for the beginner.......2002-03-22

What this book lacks for the advance max user, it more than compensates for the begining user. The layout of the book is based on the completion of a single production, outlining pre-production, storyboarding, modeling, texturing, rendering and post-production along the way. Duane Loose does an excellent job of not only explaining the animation process involved with using 3DS Max but also takes the time to explain the why, the story. After all if a picture is worth a thousand words at 30fps that adds up to a lot of words really fast.

4 out of 5 stars Overview of the latest ideas about strategic planning.......2007-03-16

This concise guide to strategy offers an excellent basic introduction to business strategy. David Dranove and Sonia Marciano not only outline their own benefits-minus-cost ("B - C") approach to strategy; they also usefully summarize the essentials of other widely accepted approaches, most notably that of Harvard Business School professor Michael E. Porter. They write lucidly, avoid academic jargon and stay focused on the essentials without burdening the reader with unnecessary detail. They illustrate their discussion with examples drawn from actual business successes and failures and two case studies, one from the airline industry and the other from the health-care industry. We recommend this book to beginning managers looking for a strategy primer. Experienced strategists can turn to it for a refresher course in fundamental business truths.

The last time I checked, Amazon and its online partner Borders sell more than 53,000 different books on the general subject of strategy. Presumably this number will continue to increase as organizations become more actively involved with formulating and then executing an effective strategy.

What we have here is one of the volumes which comprise a series produced by faculty members at the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University and on faculties elsewhere. In this instance, co-authored by Kellogg's Daniel Dranove and Sonia Marciano, Institute Fellow and Senior Lecturer at The Institute for Strategy and Competitiveness at the Harvard Business School.

I feel obligated to suggest at the outset that none of the volumes in this series is an "easy read." On the contrary, each requires but will generously reward a careful consideration of its contents which are carefully organized within nine chapters which range from "Getting Ready to Do Strategy" (with Samsung providing the illustrative example) to "Two Examples of Strategy in Action: Southwest Airlines and the Chicago Hospital Market." Case studies in and of themselves can be very informative. In this volume, the use of these three and others is especially effective as a means by which to illustrate both common business situations as well as the key points made in the article in which each case study is included.

Those who read this book are provided with an abundance of concepts, tools, and frameworks from which they can select those which are most appropriate and then, key point, make whatever modifications as may be necessary to accommodate the specific needs, interests, resources, and objectives of a given organization.

For whom will this volume be most valuable? There are several constituencies which include undergraduate and graduate students if business and their instructors as well as those who have recently earned a business degree and are now embarked on their career. Moreover, I think this book will be of substantial benefit to more experienced executives (regardless of the size or nature of their organization) who require -- and can handle -- a rigorous, at times daunting examination of how to formulate and then implement an effective strategy, and, how to obtain and then sustain support of it throughout the given enterprise. There are several reasons why such initiatives seldom succeed, among them being the inherent difficulty of charting an appropriate course and then remaining on it. Even the best of maps and Horatio Nelson at the helm cannot save a sinking ship.

Those who share my high regard for this book are urged to check out Henry Mintzberg and co-authors' Strategy Safari, Lawrence Hrebiniak's Making Strategy Work, Vijay Govindarajan and Chris Trimble's 10 Rules for Strategic Innovators, and Alfred Marcus' Big Winners and Big Losers as well as The Strategy-Focused Organization.
