    Book Description

Showcasing the best and brightest young photographers, illustrators, and stylists that have graced the large-format Tank magazine since 2002.

Since its inception in 1998, Tank magazine has been at the vanguard of fashion publishing. Initially published in a small-format "bookzine," it signaled a new era of the small print-run, highly tailored style publishing that was innovative in both its experimental art direction and design and its introduction of photojournalism and fine art. Such is its influence that the magazine was exhibited in the Museum of Modern Art's first exhibition devoted exclusively to fashion photography in the summer of 2004.

Tank magazine has cult appeal, shapes tastes, and dares to be resolutely different. The successful first Tank book featured the highlights of the magazine's first three years and has become a standard resource for talent scouts. This second chapter in the Tank phenomenon lends even greater credibility to the magazine's canny ability to point to fashion's future. 550 illustrations, 500 in color.

5 out of 5 stars A gathering place for artistic imagery and ideas drawn from the fashion, architecture and design worlds alike.......2006-07-09

The founders of the magazine "Tank" envisioned their publication as a gathering place for artistic imagery and ideas drawn from the fashion, architecture and design worlds alike: a uniquely visual magazine that would challenge and stretch the boundaries between these worlds. This second fathering of images from Tank covers four years worth of works and continues to excite and amaze by focusing on startling concepts grouped by theme. From ideas of elitism to etiquette and social mores, images of people and places juxtapose a range of approaches and provide colorful reflective images. University level art library reference collections must include a copy of Tank Too.

5 out of 5 stars Garfield Loses His Feet: Can't believe I hadn't read it before.......2006-03-29

This is, by far, the best garfield book I've ever read. It includes the best vacation sequence, the Garfield vs Air and Plumbing systems sequence and the third "Oh no! My stomach has outgrown my legs!" sequence. Very good jokes, fern pulverizations and dietry yuks. Pure Garfield down to the last panel.

5 out of 5 stars Garfield loses his feet but not his sense of humor.......2004-04-02

What else is there to say about Garfield that I haven't already said before? Garfield is the inner cat in us. He says things that we all wish we want to say but can't. He also does things that we wish we could do but can't. Garfield is probably the one cat I wouldn't mind owning although it would probably be a costly living expense having to feed him non-stop of lasagna and pizza. I love going through all my Garfield books, especially the early books when there were no spider jokes and Lyman was still around. Like in all of the books, "Garfield Loses His Feet" is peppered with sarcasm, diets, dog kicking, and farm jokes. One of my favorite moments in the book is when Garfield imagines himself married to his girlfriend Arlene. I loved it when Garfield pretends to be Amoeba Man and walks around the house wearing hear blanket. I had to laugh out loud when Garfield attempts to lay down on a hammock but because he so fat, he ends up sinking to the ground in the hammock. The time Garfield literally eats so much that his stomach outgrows his feet was priceless. My all time favorite moment in the book has to be when Nermal comes to visit. I love seeing Garfield and Nermal match wits. There are so many hilarious moments in the book it is really hard to pick a favorite strip.

        5 out of 5 stars GARFIELD RULES!.......2000-06-24

Everybody out there keep buying Garfield books! They can be worth a lot of money someday and can become collector's items! I'm always going to keep all of mine so when I have kids they can read them!

5 out of 5 stars When Garfield was funny........2000-04-10

The mid 1980's was the highest point for the Garfield comic strip. The jokes were still fresh and funny and so was the artwork. One of the high points of this collection is when Garfield eats so much that he can no longer walk and spends most of the time laying on his belly. I recommend this book out of all of the books in the series.

5 out of 5 stars This is the bestest book out of all of them.......1999-07-17

Garfield is funnier, meaner, better than ever in this book and you would realy like this book.

            Book Description

Hail xenophobia! This is the anti-UN, a decided call against the brotherhood of nations, a poisonous feast of insults from one countryman to another. No nation is exempt: If anyone is born a German, God has sufficiently punished him, claim the Russians. "Every time Europe looks across the Atlantic to see the American eagle, it observes only the rear end of an ostrich," asserted writer H.G. Wells. And, Joan Rivers has something bad to say about the British: "Boy George is all England needs-another queen who can't dress." Every toxic drop of rudeness is organized by the different areas of the world, then by nationality, and finally by theme. Krauts, Kangaroos, Polocks, Japs, Spics, Rooskies: all the epithets make their appearance. Amusing and scurrilous, this is not for the politically correct. But, don't worry--for every undiplomatic barb leveled your country you'll find just as many to throw back!

            Book Description

Throughout the 1940s, Zachary Scott (1914-1965) was the model for sophisticated, debonair villains in American film. His best-known roles include a mysterious criminal in The Mask of Dimitrios and the indolent husband of Mildred Pierce. He garnered further acclaim for his portrayal of villains in Her Kind of Man, Danger Signal, and South of St. Louis. Although he earned critical praise for his performance as a heroic tenant farmer in Jean Renoir's The Southerner, Scott never quite escaped typecasting.

In Zachary Scott: Hollywood's Sophisticated Cad, Ronald L. Davis writes an appealing biography of the film star. Scott grew up in privileged circumstances—his father was a distinguished physician; his grandfather was a pioneer cattle baron—and was expected to follow his father into medical practice. Instead, Scott began to pursue a career in theater while studying at the University of Texas and subsequently worked his way on a ship to England to pursue acting. Upon his return to America, he began to look for work in New York.

Excelling on stage and screen throughout the 1940s, Scott seemed destined for stardom. By the end of 1950, however, he had suffered through a turbulent divorce. A rafting accident left him badly shaken and clinically depressed. His frustration over his roles mounted, and he began to drink heavily. He remarried and spent the rest of his career concentrating on stage and television work. Although Scott continued to perform occasionally in films, he never reclaimed the level of stardom that he had in the mid-1940s.

To reconstruct Scott's life, Davis uses interviews with Scott and colleagues, reviews, articles, and archival correspondence from the Scott papers at the University of Texas and from the Warner Brothers Archives. The result is a portrait of a talented actor who was rarely allowed to show his versatility on the screen.

5 out of 5 stars Must have if you are a fan of the 40's!.......2007-05-11

This is a very informative book if you like Zachary Scott. Very detailed about his life growing up and his desire to be a stage actor and movie star. His family life growing up, his closeness to his mother, his marriages, and the making of movies is very interesting. If you love Mr. Scott, as I do, and have seen his movies, this is a must have!

5 out of 5 stars A Very Suave, Sophisticated Movie Star.......2006-11-11

Zachary Scott, what more can I say! A beautiful man, a great actor and one of the five top "film noir" actors in my opinion. Unfortunately, he was "tagged" as a villain in most of his films. He has a most interesting background coming from a very well to-do family, but fortunately for his fans he chose to become a movie star. A very good book if you want to get to know Zachary Scott, and I did!

3 out of 5 stars Half the story is better than none...I suppose........2006-06-29

Zachary Scott was not famous enough an actor to warrant more than one biography. Davis had complete access to Scott's family and friends and to archival material never before tapped. He supplies much factual information previously unknown to the general public. But Davis refuses to face head on Scott's alcoholism and homosexuality. He pussyfoots around these issues oh so gingerly, so genteelly that the reader can only guess how these aspects of Scott's personal life contributed to his one-dimensionality as an actor. Davis blames studio bosses for stereotyping Scott in his film roles, but surely Scott himself was at least partially to blame. Scott's failure to deal with his personal demons no doubt contributed to the limitations in his performances. Sadly, Davis allows Scott to continue in this charade. The result is a biography with little psychological depth. And because Scott is a minor figure in film history, it's not likely that a more probing biography will ever see print. This same problem mars Davis's earlier biography of Van Johnson. However, Johnson is still alive and may yet write an autobiography. Unfortunately, in Scott's case--the books are closed.

            4 out of 5 stars A Forgotten Leading Man.......2006-04-20

I have always been curious about what happened to Zachary Scott - he just seemed to disappear after several years as a leading man. This biography was very informative about his life, albeit, a little slow in the childhood and beginnings but it picked up nicely. It was interesting to know that he came from a very prominent and wealthy family in Texas. His personal life was chronicled in a thorough way and I felt the book was very much worth reading. I bought it and put in my library of Hollywood memorabilia and history.

John Cale has been a key figure in rock music for decades. Born in 1942 in a small Welsh mining village, he was playing classical piano on BBC radio at the age of eight, and by ten he had discovered rock and roll on Radio Luxembourg. He studied music at Goldsmith's College in London and in 1963 moved to New York City, under the tutelage of Aaron Copland. Cale was quickly drawn into the heart of the artistic avant-garde via Lamonte Young's Theatre of Eternal Music and Andy Warhol's Factory, and then, together with Lou Reed, founded one of the most influential rock bands of all time, the Velvet Underground. Having left the band in 1968 after disagreements with Reed, Cale has pursued his career as a solo pianist, record producer, and composer on the international rock circuit for decades.

5 out of 5 stars To borrow a song title of his, "Perfect".......2006-04-20

It is important to remember that there were four people in the Velvet Underground and only one of them was named Lou Reed. Though Lou has gone on to a waxing/waning career as homo heroin hipster in the thirty-odd years since their demise, the other three (Mo (best drummer on Earth) Tucker, Dr. Sterling Morrison (RIP), and John Cale) are just as relevant if not moreso. One might argue Lou hasn't done anything as great without them since the VU's demise.

Here we have the autobiography of uber producer (Modern Lovers, Patti Smith, The Stooges)/VU bassist/viola/singer John Cale written with NY scenester whore Victor Bockris (who wrote similar pieces on the VU with Gerard Malanga and on Patti Smith with Roberta Bayley). The time with the Velvets is here, as is his solo period, marriages and divorces, early childhood and history as a musician, in a book that runs the range of emotions not expected by someone approaching Cale with the reductionist mentality of "The dark other guy in the Velvets that wasn't Lou," which sadly, lots of people do approach him with.

This book screams for a "read by Cale" audio version as anyone who has listened to/seen footage of Cale interviews knows, the man has a hypnotic Welsh lilt to his voice.

Buy it, read it, find out more about one of the best bands of the latter part of the last century and one of the best musicians to come out of it. You won't be disappointed. The content as well as the graphic presentation are beautiful.

5 out of 5 stars A lot of jealousy, drug use and entertaining candor.......2002-08-05

After finishing this book in the wee hours of this morning I've come to the conclusion that Cale must be appreciated for his solitary genius in the fields of art and expression but also must be taken with a grain of salt. The entire book seems to be a thinly veiled attack at Lou Reed whom Cale seems overwhelmingly jealous of (thou others would tend to disgree) Plus it shows him as a very difficult individual to get along with (ie his many wives, his broken colaborative relationships with Reed and Brian Eno) I also found it amusing how he brought it other commentators only to attack Reed and make Cale out to be a saint. Overall this is a very well written book filled with sardonic wit and dry humor with an excellent view into the VU, The Factory days, and the progression of one man's struggles through himself and art. Cale is not blameless in his trangressions but I think he sees this...

5 out of 5 stars Cale can be so funny.......2001-07-01

I just recently bought this book. I love it. Great stories, and nice pictures. Sometimes it is painfull honest. It is so nice to read about the start of the Velvet Underground.

            Also the pictures are wonderful.

5 out of 5 stars INSPIRING TALE OF MY FAVOURITE MUSICIAN.......2000-09-04

I devoured this book about my top music hero and pronounce it good! It's not perfect though, I would have liked more background on some of the albums (people involved in the recording, events etc) especially his work with e.g. Nick Drake, and the editing is really sloppy: in one place early in the text, the title of a newspaper has just been left out, and Cale's collaboration with Bob Neuwerth is called Last NIGHT On Earth (it is DAY). It provides valuable insights into his personal life and artistic development, and early reflections on Andy Warhol and The Factory. Great photographs and illustrations too make for a very pleasing design. Certainly worthy of the man and his achievements.

5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT! A MUST BUY Now!.......2000-03-08

John Cale is one of my musical idols. I'm in the process of producing my own concert of his & my compositions. He has a great deal of range stylistic. I highly recommend you purchase this amazing life of an amazing artist! I actually bought the cardboard bonded first edition from the U.K. when it was first published. Very finely book. I devoured this book about one of my musical heroes and have found it good. It's not perfect though, I would have liked more background on some of the albums (people involved in the recording, events etc) especially Cale's work with e.g. Nick Drake. The editing is a bit sloppy. In one place early in the text, the title of a newspaper has just been left out, and Cale's collaboration with Bob Neuwerth is called Last NIGHT On Earth (it is DAY).

The chapters are: I Was Dreaming About My Mother 1942 - 60; Under False Pretences 1960 - 63; With La Monte Young In The Theatre Of Eternal Music 1963 - 65; A Radical Turn Of Events 1966 - 68; Flying Solo 1968 - 68 New York; Company Man 1971 - 73 Los Angeles; The Island Years 1973 - 75 London; In Dangerous Orbits 1976 - 80; The Terror Of The Moment 1981 - 85; Songs In The Key Of Collaboration 1986 - 90; Death Meets The Velvet Underground 1990 - 93; In Mortal Hope 1994 - 98.

At the start of the later chapters, some song lyrics are reproduced and the albums recorded in that period are listed. A proper discography at the end would have been preferable, and an index would have enhanced the value of the book as a reference source.

This autobiography provides valuable insights into John Cale's personal life and artistic development, and early reflections on Andy Warhol, The Factory and the legendary Velvet Underground. Great photographs and illustrations make for a very pleasing design. The book is certainly worthy of the man and his achievements.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT STORY OF A GREAT MUSICIAN.......2000-09-14

I devoured this book about my top music hero and pronounce it good! It's not perfect though, I would have liked more background on some of the albums (people involved in the recording, events etc) especially his work with e.g. Nick Drake, and the editing is really sloppy: in one place early in the text, the title of a newspaper has just been left out, and Cale's collaboration with Bob Neuwerth is called Last NIGHT On Earth (it is DAY). It provides valuable insights into his personal life (I was amazed to discover that his mother tongue is Welsh) and artistic development, and early reflections on Andy Warhol and The Factory. The text has a favourable reference to James Young's book on Nico, which is also highly recommended. Great photographs and illustrations too make for a very pleasing design. Certainly worthy of the man and his achievements.

            Book Description

Steve Scott held and lost nine jobs in his first six years after college. He was told more than once that he would never succeed. Yet this former corporate failure not only became a multimillionaire himself, more than forty others have become millionaires as a result of the efforts and advice of Steve and his partners. Ordinary people just like you, including a housewife, a makeup artist, a hair stylist, a salesman, a teacher, a convenience store clerk, a marriage counsellor, a carpenter, a doctor, a dog trainer, a former P.E. teacher, to name a few.

Not Simply a Book about Making Millions
A Book about Achieving Incredible Degrees of Success!

This book is not a guide to making millions, although its insights and advice could certainly result in that. It's not a book about theories. Instead, it's a step-by-step guide to success -- success in any field, at any age. It tracks Steve Scott's life from mediocre high school student to a corporate failure to number-one marketing entrepreneur in the United States. It shows how a "nobody" who couldn't even afford to pay for his first child's birth could create more than a dozen record-breaking companies in completely different industries, selling over one billion dollars in products.

Unlike Any Success or Business Book You've Ever Read!

This book doesn't stop with general principles or psychological motivation, but instead gives specific tasks you can instantly apply to your personal or business life.

            Your Personal Notebook for Success

Each chapter ends with a section that leads the reader through a step-by-step process that can result in greater success than he or she has ever experienced. The Notebook for Success provides a guide that can be used by anyone from a high school student to the CEO of a Fortune 500 company. You'll understand why Steve Scott firmly believes that ANYONE can significantly increase his or her "batting averages" in any area of life and break through the barriers that separate mediocrity from phenomenal success -- barriers imposed by others or even by ourselves.

If you want to achieve a higher degree of success than you've ever thought possible, this book will become the most important book on success you, your employees, and your children will ever read.

5 out of 5 stars A great book for infomercial marketing.......2007-07-17

As marketing director for my company, I read constantly read marketing and sales books. Occasionally a book comes along that really peaks my interest. A Millionaire's Notebook is such a book.

Many products have been marketed using infomercials, most fall flat on their faces. But some soar, making millions for the companies that sell them. Steven K. Scott has been around for a long time. He has marketed many products that you would recognize using both infomercials and 2-minute television spots. In his book, A Millionaire's Notebook, he outlines exactly what it takes to take a product to market and make a fortune.

He covers how to write a good television spot, how to write and engaging infomercial. He teaches how to pick or produce a great product with a fertile market. His writing is clean and his instruction is easy to understand.

If you hope to market using television, this book should be on your shelf.

            Excellent job, Steven.

            Hope this helps.

            5 out of 5 stars But Wait There's More!.......2007-01-11

More than just a book about "How Ordinary People Can Achieve Extraordinary Success", Steven Scott has given us what I consider to be one of the best books on the subject of making infomercials. I've produced, written and directed over a hundred infomercials myself, so I feel qualified to make this endorsement. I thought Steven explained the business so well that I purchased and gave away over two dozen copies to my clients, colleagues and friends. If you want to learn what making infomercials is all about, while discovering secrets on how to vastly improve your business life, then order your copy now!

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant marketing & copywriting book -- powerful tactics!.......2005-05-27

This is one of my top 3 favorite marketing/copywriting books of the year (also get Eugene Schwartz' Breakthrough Advertising, and Joe Sugarman's books, and Ron Popeil for infomercials).

As an internet marketer and producer of internet infomercials, I found the insights shared by Steven to be priceless. The checklist on page 194 has helped me make thousands in sales improvements on a single campaign, and the inclusion of actual scripts and objection-handling phrases and marketing perspective was absolutely stunning.

Scott's a brilliant man, and this is one book that I will refer to for years (especially all the later chapters where his best secrets are revealed -- crucial stuff for marketers and copywriters).

In addition to personally profiting from Scott's tips, I recommend it highly for all my students at the online copywriting university site. Wickedly brilliant. Also study Dan Kennedy's stuff, priceless.

Buy this book -- one of my all time favorites, and I've bought hundreds.

            5 out of 5 stars Fabulous book!.......2005-03-16

I've read this book about 5 times, starting from when I was 23 years old and floudering around in the business world trying to figure out what I could do for a living.... making about about 1/5 of what I do today, 8 years later.

Steven Scott meshes practical skills and advice with actual step by step activities to do to immediately put what he's saying into action in your own life. He's the genius behind such products as Richard Simmon's "Deal a Meal", Suzanne Sommer's "Thigh Master", and Christie Brinkley & Chuck Norris' "Total Gym".

Extremely easy reading by a man who has done it. It's like having a personal coach who is a multi-millionare at your side telling you how to do it. I recommend it to anyone of any age.

2 out of 5 stars nice autobiography.... but little useful info.......2002-04-06

this guy writes a nice autobiography about how he did it in marketing... maybe interesting for some but not for me. I guess I was expecting something more than a horn blowing fanfare of an "I did it my way" brag-o-rama.
