Good Lord! (choke!).......2007-07-28
How dare "Gooch"(if that is his real name) claim such an outragious statement! Mr. Friedman was one of the hardest-working caricaturists in business from the time period in which he used innumerable ammounts of dots in his work(and certainly the same for hard-working cartoonists, right up there with Henriette Valium)! I admire his work greatly, and I would not prefer it to many cartoonists if in fact your "rapidograph" statement was indeed (psssh!) true! From now on, research something before ya write a review claiming something you obviously made up, thinking no one could have such great talent. And claiming that Vonnegut got "high-minded" when compairing Drew to Goya is an insult to both Mr. Friedman, and Mr. Vonnegut. Furthermore, I will enjoy your reply and/or apology and/or insult posted on this fair site, that is, if you will stop being insulted, and actually take in what I have typed. May the Earth smell of Drew Friedman's philosophical celebrity skewerings evermore, amen.
ThE PREVIOUS REVIEWER IS DEAD WRONG.......2006-04-12
Mr. Gooch McCracken is quite incorrect. Drew Friedman has NEVER used a rapidograph pen in his work, EVER. He uses a Crowquill pen with a HUNT nib, the reason being that the line drawn by a rapidograph does not vary. Mr Friedman is much more of a true ARTIST than THAT.
Schlock mysticism at its finest.......2004-06-29
Ya see? This is what happens when 2 shlubs waste their precious time watching Sandler & Young on THE MIKE DOUGLAS SHOW. (Didn't Bruce ever tell them to go outside and get some fresh air?)
Josh's wordage really outdid itself in ENTERTAINMENT FREAK (my favorite thingy). Wherein the word "entertainment" takes on the hypnotic quality of a mantra. The sour crabby look on Miriam's face happens to be the greatest pictorial rendering of anything since...oh...I'd have to go back to Margaret Keane in her prime.
In case you're curious, Drew accomplishes his stuff with something called a rapidograph. Kurt Vonnegut got all high-minded by claiming that Drew is right up there with Goya. But I very much doubt if Goya or Van Gogh or even Ernie Bushmiller (the illustrious illustrator of NANCY & SLUGGO) could've been capable of the meticulous subtlety on display here.
Brilliant Satire of Arcane Subjects.......1998-12-01
The Friedman brothers are without a doubt two of the most brilliant satirists alive. Warts and All contains capsule biographies of a variety of obscure individuals and bygone celebrities. There are odd juxtapositions of serial killers and celebrities. The artwork (meticulously crafted with rapidograph) is excellent. Warts and All is dark, very dark comedy. It is not for everyone. However, if the reader is familiar with the references, one can appreciate what a virtuoso work this is. Highly recommended for the twisted lay person.
Product Description
Hollywood Warts 'N' All is an anthology of scandal, trivia and anecdotes about the first one hundred years of American cinema. For more than a decade the author has gleaned thousands of items from hundreds of films, biographies and movie publications in general, focusing on the bizarre, the scandalous and the controversial aspects of Tinseltown and, in particular, the private and public lives of the stars themselves. As the title implies, it is a no-holds-barred portrait of an industry notorious for its promiscuity, eccentricities and outrageous behaviour.
In these pages the reader will find tales of 'the casting couch', racial discrimination, criminal activity, drug and alcohol abuse, shady deals and cover-ups. Myths and legends are exposed and war records examined. Accidental deaths, suicides and murders are scrutinised as well as censorship wrangles, ruined careers and sexual preferences.
On the set clashes, feuds and insults, romances and affairs, marriages and divorces are all depicted as they happened. Editing and continuity gaffs, humorous exchanges, mishaps and technical problems, tricks of the trade and casting anomalies are also featured. For movies based on actual events, the author has drawn comparisons between Hollywood's, quite often, ludicrous interpretations and historical fact.
Over five hundred films are featured alphabetically, from
A Beautiful Mind to
Zulu, from the industry's humble beginnings in 1905 to the present day. This book is for movie buffs intrigued by the unusual and seamier side of the business, for those more interested in what makes their idols tick than in their actual performances on the screen.

The Dangerous Book for Boys

Customer Reviews:
Pretty darn cute.......2007-09-12
These days, my opportunites to share great children's books are limited. My 27 year-old son is so over storytime. I have no grandchildren and my nephews are in high school. My husband spends all day listening to his students read out loud.
When "A Field Guide to Monsters" landed on my desk last week, I was happy to once again read something light, bright and everso creative.
The publicity packet included with the book says the author is "a firm believer in monsters and will trust any report of monster sightings until proven false."
It takes a very active imagination and a mind open to all possibilities to write truly engaging children's stories. Face it. The Brothers Grimm already have a patent on the most popular plot lines. This encyclopedia of scary things that lurk under beds, in closets and bathtubs is a bright and fresh addition to adolescent literature.
With this book, young readers will "learn about monster habitats, life cycles, and how to avoid the most dangerous creatures; see historical evidence of monster sightings; read about chilling monster encounters; and find out how to become a monsterologist, too."
Olander teaches us the importance of having the right tools when on a monster hunt and how to go about stalking and finding new species.
Olander says it's helpful to have an old sheet or blanket and to cut holes for your eyes in the blanket so "you can see out while remaining covered."
He says "many monsters have a sensitive sense of smell, so using cloves or potpourri can be used to mask your human scent."
The very first monster Olander chronicles is the Balloonseter (bulla inflatus). Balloonster consumes gas of any kind, even plain air and is not aggressive or dangerous.
No safety measures are necessary when encountering a Balloonster.
Not so with the Corner Cat (felis angulosa). You'll need rubber galoshes or leather boots to protect your ankles from Corner Cat bites, since the creature is a specialist in "lightning fast sneak attacks and can cause grave injuries to small children."
According to Olander, there is no need to be afraid of the Domestic Dust-Devil (sarcinula diaboli domestica), even though he has distinguishing features that include "limbs full of barbs that catch dust bunnies and other prey." Olander reminds us that the Dust-Devil's natural enemy is the vacuum cleaner.
Olander warns of the dreaded Flesh-Eating Tub Frog (rana labrum carnivora). "This creature eats human flesh, soap and bath products. It also loves fruit- and bubble-gum scented bubble bath."
Although the Flesh-Eating Tub Frog is very rare, be careful if you find one of the hop toads in your bath. "If you find one, there are often many more."
Monster-X (monstrosaurus rex) seems to prefer children with few friends. They're vegetarians, so it's safe to hang with them. However, they are candy thiefs. They reproduce by laying eggs, which can usually be found in abundance during the month of April.
Olander takes a close look at the care and feeding of other scary beasts, such as Wearms, Two-Toed Jumping Rats, Snouted Grabbers and Hangers. Olander, who is also an illustrator, adds clever drawings to explain some of the monsters' peculiarities.
Olander's insight into the creatures and their habitants is just delightful, although not for the faint of heart.
Editor's note: The publisher has set the age guidelines from 9-12. You might want to push that up a year or so if your youngster is squeamish about guts, gore and things that go bump in the night.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent introduction to Japanese extreme cinema.......2003-09-11
Another entry in Creation Book's excellent collection of cinema exploration is "Eros in Hell," which gives the reader an introduction to the bloody world of Japanese extreme cinema, from the "pink" period (adult films) of the 1960s to the extreme gore of the notorious "Guinea Pig" series. Although it certainly would have benefited for a more in-depth examination of the subject, writer Jack Hunter does cover a lot of important milestones, from the early pioneers of Japanese extreme cinema to the independent filmmakers of today.
Japanese culture is complicated and full of paradoxes, and those paradoxes are reflected in the films highlighted in "Eros."
Left me hungry for more substantial food..........2003-02-07
This is a highly distressing book. For as much information as the reader discovers, the sense of lacking mounts, creating more questions than this book has means, or intent, to answer. It is best to think of Eros in Hell as a primer for the reader interested in getting a taste of extremism in Japanese cinema. The high points of the book include the chapter on Koji Wakamatsu and the "underground" films of Shinya Tsukamoto, Shojin Fukui, et. al. Meanwhile, the rest of the book founders under the weight of excessive footnotes¹, goofy interviews of Japanese filmmakers by Parisian photographer Romain Slocombe² and a pedantic chapter covering the minutia of Nagisa Oshima's AI NO CORRIDA (IN THE REALM OF THE SENSES).
For readers with more than a passing interest in the Japanese New Wave Cinema, I recommend picking up David Desser's Eros plus Massacre (named after Yoshishige Yoshida's film). Hampered by its aggressively wide scope and passive acceptance of misogyny, Eros in Hell does a terrific job of stressing the need for a comprehensive look at the radical reaches of Japanese Cinema. (ISBN: 1871592933)
¹ All of the footnotes in Eros in Hell would work much better if integrated into the text.
² Slocombe is best known for his photographs of Asian girls in bandages and, apparently, he feels a need to bring up his fetish with everyone to whom he speaks.
Explore Japanese cinema without boundaries.......2002-07-01
Jack Hunter states in his introduction that one of the only things that Japanese cinema bans is the depiction of genitalia, and states that this sole barrier has brought something that is lacking in the West: an absence of boundaries.
For his book, Hunter has chosen to explore blood, sex and madness as themes running through Japanese films. For the average film viewer, chances are the only film they will have seen or heard of in this book is "In the Realm of the Senses." For the Japanese film connoisseur, this book is one of THE handbooks.
Chapters detail film genres along with specific directors who have shaped the modern Japan film industry. There are also tons of black and white pictures, showing personalities as well as scenes from the many movies.
Tokyo Decadence.......2001-10-25
Being a fan of both Japanese movies in general, and horror movies in particular, this book is a rare gem indeed. Not only does it cover some of the films released by Japan Shock Video ("Naked Blood", "Mermaid In A Manhole", "Entrails Of A Vergin") but it also gives you a brief history of "pink films", exposes the Japanese fascination with fetisches of all kinds and shows some of the differences between Western and Japanese culture.
While it offers only a few answers to why films like "Raping Female University Students" or "Rapeman" are tolerated in Japanese society, I'd say it's a good start for someone wanting to understand a culture so very different from ours.
Since most movies are mentioned with both English and Japanese titles, it is also a good book for film collectors - for me it's more or less a shopping list.
"Eros In Hell" - approved.
Great book for bedtime reading.......1999-08-19
This excellent book offers an in-depth account of porn films in Japan, with an emphasis on films that feature both sex and violence/gore. The photos included are fantastic, although some of them are difficult to make out the details. The text is easy to read, although I wish the publisher had used a better font.
A good companion book to "Babylon Blue".

Book Description
This scholarly volume is the first extended European-language study of thumri, the most important and popular semi-classical genre of North Indian music. Synthesizing historical and musicological analysis with an approach rooted in cultural materialism, Peter Manual provides a rigorous, detailed, and yet readable look at this significant musical style. Manuel subjects thurmi to a detailed stylistic analysis, and, drawing on his own training as a sitarist, discusses at length the genre's development as an important instrumental style.

Great Resource for a Seminar Provider.......2006-12-13
This book was a great resource. The vendors that he provides to contact is well worth the investment.
Well worth reading.
It's OK, But..........2000-11-25
This book is a good, though only partial, treatment of the subject of developing a seminar business from scratch. It's actually better at teaching you how to promote yourself as a trainer or seminar leader than it is at showing you how to build a business. It's "you can do it, too!" approach is empowering but woefully incomplete.
Seminar leadership is a viable business in itself, as well as a component of any subject matter expert's business. There is tremendous potential in establishing onself as an expert and selling that expertise though seminars, including "backroom sales" of books, videos, audiotapes, and related products. Seminar attendees, book readers, etc., are also a potential audience for private consulting assignments. The ability and drive to leverage one body of knowledge into multiple formats and venues is central to this book's purpose.
After reading the book and listening to the companion audiotapes (sold separately), I attended a two-day "Seminar Leaders University" hosted by the American Seminar Leaders Association (ASLA), founded by the author and subsequently sold by him. I hold their "Certified Seminar Leader" (CSL) designation. However, none of these three resources addressed the *economics* of the seminar business or prepared me for the business of the seminar business.
Begin with this book, and follow up with Howard Shenson's books, epecially "How to Develop and Promote Successful Seminars and Workshops: The Definitive Guide to Creating and Marketing Seminars, Workshops, Classes, and Conferences," for the dollars and cents of marketing, testing, and delivering successful seminars.
"How to Make it Big" should whet your appetite for more substantial fare to complement its enthusiasm and introduction to the subject.
GREAT!.......2000-01-12
This book will give you the perfect map for beginning your own seminar business whether you are experienced or not. It also has so many references and tools that it will be the only book necessary regarding this subject for you to have and keep. Thank you Paul!
Wonderful way to learn more about how to get started!.......1999-09-11
This book was really helpful to me. It contained information on everything from what to do with the initial idea of a seminar business, to how to write a great seminar brochure, to marketing techniques. Overall, I'd HIGHLY recommend it to others interested in making money in the seminar business.
Also, a good selling point is the listing of names, addresses, and numbers for people in the business, contacts, good seminar locations, etc. Very worthwhile investment!

Not worth your time........2006-09-27
Basically I had to purchase this for a class. The book is full of acronyms and buzz words with no application. The end of chapter review is great if you just wanted to add new words to your vocabulary and be able to repeat their definitions with little understanding. This is a classic example of a text book gone wrong.
Good for its purpose.......2006-06-14
If you need a management information systems book, this is the book you should be looking for! Its not useful for much else, however, maybe kindling...
deluxe RIP OFF.......2004-12-20
I 'was forced' to buy this book for an MIS course. We all know how textbooks are scams anyway, but this one takes the cake. My college even had the balls to 'bundle' this with an MS Access book so we were stuck with a $170 bundle. All the info I needed to take the course was available on the website webct. If you can find a way to access that site, you don't even need this outrageously expensive book. I got an A in the course and never cracked the book. I just used the info on the website. You should try that route if you can, and forgo purchasing this book.
Just not worth the cost........2004-10-12
This book is compulsory for a class I am in. Do what I did, don't waste your money - borrow from a library..... or find other solutions. This is way too much money for information that can be covered in other sources. The publisher is clearly exploiting the fact that it is used as a textbook to raise the cost outrageously.
This book is a scam.......2004-09-09
My friend used Management Information Sustems: Managing the Digital Firm 8th edition. Now that I received this one I can see that 95% of of the content in the new book is identical to the one my friend has. Oh, right, the authors also added to the title the words "essentials of" Management...
I can believe the publisher let the authors publish this kind of book. A previous review says that the book is almost identical to the previous edition of the same book. Now I am saying that the book is almost identical to a different book writen by the same authors...this is outrageous.
Ah, yes. The cases at the end of the chapters are different
