Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars An impressive and fully rounded presentation.......2001-06-07

Roy Lichtenstein is one of America's premier "pop art" painters and print makers. His style is instantly recognizable and powerfully influenced the popular culture of the last thirty years. Roy Lichtenstein: Interiors is an informative, wonderfully illustrated introduction and analysis of his "interior" paintings -- many published her for the first time. Robert Fitzpatrick is Director of the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago and effectively collaborates with Dorothy Lichtenstein, the late Leo Castelli, Sidney B. Felsen, and Cassandra Lozano to present an impressive and fully rounded presentation on the life, work, and artistic innovations of Lichtenstein. Roy Lichtenstein: Interiors is a very highly recommended addition to personal, academic, and community library American art history collections.

5 out of 5 stars Blends social commentary with caricatures.......2001-05-18

Roy Lichtenstein has a distinctive pop art style which blends social commentary with caricatures: Interiors profiles many of his drawings of structures and space, with occasional people included in the sketches. Full-page color drawings accompany surveys of Lichtenstein's works and achievements.

      Book Description

With a new theme and format for each new issue, Visionaire stretches the imagination and boundaries of what an art and fashion publication can be. Issue #30: The Game takes as its inspiration the Louis Vuitton Cup, the qualifying round of sailboat races for the America's Cup, and the first major competition of the new millennium. Mirroring the Cup's format of entrants from seven different countries, Visionaire assembled 'teams' of artists, photographers, and image makers to represent each of the Cup's participating countries. Accordingly there are seven different versions of this issue, one per country. Each version comes in the form of a puzzle: sixteen cubes when placed in the correct configuration form one of the six different images. The cubes along with a book of all forty-two images are packaged inside a silk-screened Lucite case created by Louis Vuitton. Among the participating artists are: for the USA, Alex Katz, Nan Goldin, Mary Ellen Mark, Steven Klein, David LaChapelle, and Elizabeth Peyton; for Australia, Tracey Moffatt; for France, Serge Lutens and Karl Lagerfeld; for Italy, Maurizio Catalan and Francesco Clemente; for Japan, Syd Mead and Takashi Murakami; for Spain, Pedro Almodovar and Juan Gatti; and for Switzerland, Raymond Meier, Pipilotti Rist, and Francois Berthoud.

Described as the "couture version of magazines," this highly collectible publication-as-art-object pulls together the design, fashion, and art world's most important image makers.

      4 out of 5 stars The Game.......2000-04-08

The Game is inspired by the Louis Vuitton Cup, in which seven countries participate. Artists from the representative countries were asked to come up with photographs, drawings and paintings that were intepretations of "The Game". These could be mind games, sports, it was left open to artistic interpretation. Hence each country edition consists of 6 different images, that can be arranged with the 16 cubes that are provided. Each image created by the cubes were the result of artists/fashion designers usually of the representative country. Karl Lagerfeld for France is a notable exception. A note on the quality of The Game. I was slightly disappointed at the quality of the finishing with regard to the French Edition of The Game, since Visionaire is usually a high quality enterprise. The colors were not crisp and the printing looked cheap. Overall the finishing did not reflect the relatively high purchase price. The idea of using cubes to form different images is fairly interesting, and the high collector value is what in the end redeems the cost. It makes a nice display item, because of its uniqueness and unconventionality. There are 6,000 pieces being sold of each country edition, i.e. USA, Italy, France etc. Some of the earlier Visionaires only had 6,000 pieces in total. In short, if you want a piece of art, that's comparatively affordable, yet also a good investment I suggest purchasing it. If however, you are expecting 150 Dollars worth of quality, you'll find yourself feeling slightly cheated.

5 out of 5 stars great ideas great photos and normal LV excellence packaging.......2000-01-22

Here's the deal. 7 boxes in Louis Vuitton cases each one containing 16 cubes - all lines up on one side a perfect photo, turn the cubes one way and helter skelter....you have to reconfigure them to create the next photo. Quality is usual suberb excellence from Gan and crew. I am not sure what Amazon is selling as I understand that there are definelty 7 boxes each from a different world area such as USA, France, Italy, UK, Japan, Australia and one Scandinavian country. Ed of 6000 and as I understand it they are $150 each times 7 boxes. The collectors have to have them but that is big big bucks. Quandry. Editions keep growing as does price. But they are marvellous. Display copies in usual places.Easch box comes with booklet containing full photo and artist info.Good for Visionaire - they always credit the artist. Usual suspects - La Chappelle, Testino, and crew. Now the pic Amazon has is the US version --where are the others

In this, her third volume, Molly Ivins (columnist, NPR commentator, and three-time finalist for the Pulitzer Prize) sheds light on the "great clouds of obsfucation" that stymie attempts to clearly analyze President Clinton's job performance. Ivins stayed a Clinton supporter after most of her fellow liberals bailed--up until 1996, when Clinton signed the welfare "reform" bill. "My expectations of Democratic politicians exceed my expectations of Republicans by only the smallest of margins," Ivins states ruefully, "but real Democrats don't hurt children. Clinton did." Nevertheless, current Clinton bashing defies logic and she provides a levelheaded analysis of the wave of anti-Clinton sentiment by distinguishing between the usual brew of Republican and Democrat animosity and such phenomena as "the well-financed propaganda machine funded largely by Richard Mellon Scaife of Pittsburgh."

The title flushes out the core concern of the collection. One of the oldest sayings in politics, "You got to dance with them what brung you," points to the reality that special-interest money rules today's politics. For Ivins, the centerpiece of corruption is gold, and such inevitable consequences as the tax burden shifting from corporations to individuals; the widening gap between rich and poor. You've Got to Dance with Them What Brung You, inimitably bold and broad, attacks racism, homophobia, terrorism; offers a terse and dismally delightful excoriation of the "ineffable" Newt Gingrich; reports on political farces at both the state and national levels. It's full of incisive gems that offer insight on some of our national extremes (Timothy McVeigh's obsession with the bizarre and racist book, The Turner Diaries, replete with the bomb recipe that blew up the Murrah Federal Building).

Champion of commonsense and compassion; frank and boldly funny, Molly Ivins has been called by the L.A. Times "H.L. Mencken without the cruelty, Will Rogers with an agenda." Those of us who love Molly Ivins read her for her gutsy, lively, liberal values, and those of us who don't ... should.

        Book Description

In her long-awaited new collection, the Colt Peacekeeper of American political
humor draws a bead on targets that range from the Libido-in-Chief to Newt
Gingrich, campaign funny-money to the legislative lunacy of her native Texas--and
        hits a bull's-eye every time.

Whether she's writing about Bill Clinton ("The Rodney Dangerfield of
presidents"), Bob Dole ("Dole contributed perhaps the funniest line of the year
with his immortal observation that tobacco is not addictive but that too much
milk might be bad for us.  The check from the dairy lobby must have been late
that week"), or cultural trends ("I saw a restaurant in Seattle that specialized
in latte and barbecue.  Barbecue and latte.  I came home immediately"), Molly
takes on the issues of the day with her trademark good sense and inimitable wit.

5 out of 5 stars "Do what?" That says it all in Texas.......2005-09-15

I must admit, right off the bat,I've never heard of Molly Ivins;but I sure know who she is now.I loved this book from beginning to end. What this book is,is a collection of her columns from a Texas newspaper 'The Fort Worth Star-Telegram' during the 1990's.She cut her teeth on journalism working for peanuts on a little Texas leftist paper called 'The Texas Observer'.
She is an avowed left wing liberal and makes no bones about it;and you can't fault anyone for being honest;which more than anything else she is.If you ask me,I would call her down home Texas Redneck. She came from an upper middle class family. Her mother was a lifelong Republican;but as she maintains on page
118 that "there's nothing you can do about being born a liberal-fish gotta swim and hearts gotta bleed".On page 206,she also talks about a group of people who want Texas to separate,as being "born in a state of high indignation and profound misunderstanding". So it seems that this trait in leftists is inbred;I guess that explains a lot.
When her columns deal with Republicans, she can see no good and when she deals with Democrats she sees no wrong;and even if there is,it's the devility of the conservatives at work.Hey,I'm not faulting her for that, that's where she comes from, and more power to her.At times I get the impression she is a Texas Redneck and strives hard to be a liberal at the same time;not an easy course to sail.
She's at her best in writing about Texas politics and comes up with much better lines when on home turf.If she comes up short sometimes ,it's that liberal trait of believing that politicians and government will look after her and all the ills. This is an approach that always leads to disappointment whether one is left or right wing inclined.
This book was published in 1998,while Clinton was still President and little did she know what disappointments were lying in wait. She was also very surprised that Richards had lost to George W Bush as Governor of Texas. The liberals are great in deluding themselves, and that was just the start of things to come.If someone told her at the time, that GW wound not only win the Governorship of Texas but would go on to win the Presidency--twice;she would have thought them ridiculous.Again, they deluded themselves over Gore and Kerry being unbeatable.Let's not even talk about the Terminator and his Democratic wife in California.
There is no reason to lose any sleep over why things turned out that way.All she has to do is to call Rush and he will explain it to her.But therein lies the problem, she knows what he would tell her,and since she could never believe him, the libs will continue their worn out tactics.
Another thing she had no inclination of when she wrote this book is that something even more prepostrous was in the future.Kinky Friedman is now running for Governor of Texas and he says if elected he will put his friend Willie Nelson in charge of ATF(Alcohol,Tobacco &Firearms).Willie has been pretty opposed to Bush,so that must make him a liberal and Kinky is a Jewish boy from the Village in New York come Cowboy and writer and that sounds kinda liberal as well;so we could be in for some interesting times.Hey,Jessy Ventura,The Terminator---and now the dynamic duo of Kinky and Willie.Buy the way, Kinky tells us the Jews and Cowboys have something in common---"we both wear our hats indoors".He also has a idea of replacing the Star of Texas with the Star of David.
Molly reminds us on page 200:
"Before you accuse me of hopeless parochialism, consider the
one great truth that all Texas liberals grasp in their cradles:Things Can Always Get Worse. In fact, they often do.Therefore, it is incumbent upon us to rejoice now, because these will turn out to be the Good Old Days".
Hey,it ain't over yet.I am going to read another book by Molly published in 2005,"Bushwacked",this should be a humdinger too.And if I'm not mistaken,I think I saw another at the bookstore a couple of days ago.

        3 out of 5 stars A Change of Pace.......2003-08-07

After reading this authors book on George Jr. - Shrub, I was excited to pick this one up. I figured I was going to get non-stop chapters of defense and support of President Clinton. Unfortuantly what I wanted only covered 50% of the book. The other half of the book covered Texas politics and personal columns on people she admired. The book is just a few years of her columns arranged by topic into sections of the book. This did make it easy for me to skip through the areas I was not interested in.

Overall the book was funny and interesting. I found that when she was writing on national political issues, I tended to be with her step for step. She is not a blind supporter of President Clinton, but takes a more practical approach to her politics. She does not just disagree with all things Republican and agree with all things Democratic. I found that I even liked it when she did give Bill some grief about some of his many missteps. So I really enjoyed half of the book, and given the title was surprised that anything-other then national politics was covered. I just was not that interested in reading about a local Texas Senator working on a road project.

5 out of 5 stars Ivins is liberal -- sensible and factual.......2003-02-10

Molly Ivins is simply a top-notch columnist who documents her opinions with facts that cannot be denied. So, her detractors resort to calling her "liberal" as though that word has the Magical Power to transform sense and reason and humor and documentation into a negative.

The far right, filled with paranoia and mistrust, needs to resort to name calling when they deal with this witty, tough, and very well-informed treasure. Why? She's got the goods on them. (She has been a thorn in Bush's side relentlessly cutting through his misdirection to reveal what he does. And, oh, how that annoys those who want to revive the House Committee on UnAmerican Activities -- that wonderful little gang that brought blacklisting and mud-slinging to the halls of congress.)

Ivins is a patriotic writer -- too in love with her country and its Constitution to sit by quietly while it gets dismantled in the name of "security" by those who use fear as their political cover, and too sharp to allow the politics of destruction to go unpunished.

Thanks to Molly Ivins, there is something to love about Texas after all!

4 out of 5 stars Political Insights with Wit and Texas Charm.......2003-01-02

Whenever I see a Molly Ivans piece on the op-ed page of my morning paper, a warm feeling of anticipation comes over me. So when I came across this collection of her essays at an airport ``bookstore'' before a long trip home, plunking down the $12 was a no-brainer. I wasn't disappointed.

The pieces in this book are full of Texas charm, humor, and just plain common sense, but also the facts that so often go unreported in today's news. Her topics are many, but three that come up often in this collection are media ethics (got that? media ethics debated by a journalist!), hypocrisy (Al D'Amato conduct an ethics investigation?), and her favorite, the U.S. campaign financing system (which she refers to as ``legalized bribery'') and its fundamental effects on our society. ``The truth is that there is no political story more important than campaign financing. It's not just the hottest political story---it's the only story. It's the key to the real source of class warfare in this country.'' Not only are these issues and many others addressed intelligently with an eye toward ferreting out the truth, but they are often a laugh riot!

The introduction to the book was written in January, 1998, just after the Lewinsky scandal broke, and all but one of the pieces were originally published from 1993 to 1997. Some of the events Ivans refers to are thus a bit dated today (early 1999), but her writing still packs a wallop.

1 out of 5 stars Horrible Communist Book.......2001-09-08

I read this book and I can tell you that Stalin would be proud! If you are looking for comic relief you might get it from this liberal fossil, but don't read it looking for any relevant information!

              Book Description

What does Richard Roeper know about the movies? Plenty. As the celebrated syndicated columnist for the Chicago Sun Times, Roeper has devoted at least a column a week to the buzz from Hollywood and the countless urban legends that emanate from Tinsel Town. And now, he's the co-host of "Ebert and Roeper and the Movies."

Did Jane Fonda betray American POWs while visiting Hanoi? What's the story behind Tom Green's supposed raid on a bar mitzvah? Was Marilyn Monroe really a size 16? Was Mel Gibson horribly disfigured in a barroom brawl, leading to more than five years of rehab and plastic surgery before he could show his face in public? And what's the truth about the infamous bloopers on such shows as "The Newlywed Game," "Password" and the "Tonight Show"?

Richard Roeper recounts these stories in Hollywood Urban Legends, as he gives us the truth behind the most deliciously false stories about our favorite stars.

1 out of 5 stars This "author" should stick to his day job.......2003-02-01

The concept of this book (urban legends regarding celebrities) is a good idea, but the "author" (cheesy movie reviewer) did such a horrible job writing and compiling this book that it was a major disappointment. The book is very disorganized, hard to follow, and haphazard in general. Instead of explaining each urban legend logically, the author will leave out important details, or will start in the middle of the story. Then scattered throughout the text are his own attempts at pointing out irony or including stupid puns. This book is more like an editorial, rather than a real source about urban legends.

The other thing that really annoyed me is that the "author" was incorrect about whether some legends are true or not. I have seen the actual footage from a particular game show (it's been played several times on bloopers shows) that proves that the legend is indeed true, and this book will tell you that it's a myth. At least get your facts straight before you publish a ... book.

Don't waste your money or your time. You could easily find all the same info in this book by spending a few hours surfing the web.

1 out of 5 stars Shockingly bad; high school D paper.......2002-07-15

What a waste of trees. Mr. Roeper merely cobbled together a bunch of stories from internet and print Urban Legend sites and made himself a book, and the whole mess is so pretentious and badly written that it's nothing less than shocking. I've never, ever seen such a poor compilation of urban legends. He debunks true stories, exaggerates false ones, misstates facts, and even writes himself into an urban legend. He couldn't have spent more than a couple hours on the internet researching this mess. Really, really, bad.

              5 out of 5 stars What FUN!.......2002-02-21

I have been reading Urban Legends since "The Vanishing Hitchhiker" in the '80's. This is a great take on the subject, Hollywood and those "Famous" stories. I appreciate Roeper's debunking, and he does and especially nice job with Marylin's dress size.

Unlike one person in the book, I don't consider Roeper to be "Mr. Urban Legend", that title is reserved for Jan Harold Brunvand. Brunvand's books are what you want to read for a general understading of Urban Legends. This book, however, is alot of fun to read.

5 out of 5 stars My Reading Experience.......2002-01-03

This was a truly great book to read! I'm 13, and I was even interested in most of the stories. There are so many, that if you skip a few it won't even matter! I let my Dad and one of my sisters read it, and they really enjoyed it. I loved it, and if you are one of those "gossipy" or "nosey-about-the-stars" people, I believe that you should read this....

              5 out of 5 stars Recommended reading!.......2001-10-17

My wife and I first heard this book being promoted on television and as avid readers of entertainment publications and books, I figured that I would give Richard Roeper's second book on "Urban Legends" a try.

Once I received the book and started reading a few pages, I was instantly hooked. Next thing you know, I read the book completely. It's that entertaining.

The book covers mostly urban legends relating to movies and television and a few on music.

Without revealing too much what's in the book, here are a few urban legends that some of you may or may not know:

              * Was John Wayne a draft-dodger? Can America's movie icon who was portrayed in many movies as a military hero be a draft-dodger in real life? True or False?

              * Did Monica Lewinsky actually tell Larry King, "I've learned not to put things in my mouth that are bad for me"? True or False?

              * Did Tom Green really attend a Bar Mitzvah dressed as Hitler? True or False?

              * The reason why the Little Rascals is no longer on television is because Bill Cosby purchase the rights of "The Little Rascals" and he didn't want it shown anymore because of the shows portrayal of Blacks? True or False?

              * Did Mama Cass of the Mamas and Papas die of a ham sandwich? True or False?

              * Did Jane Fonda really betray P.O.W.'s during a trip to Hanoi? True or False?

              * Is the children's song "Puff the Magic Dragon" by Peter, Paul and Mary about Marijuana? True or False?

              * Was Lucille Ball a communist? True or False?

              * Is there a curse among the actors who were on any of the "Poltergeist" movies? True or False?

Roeper does a great job setting up the urban legend and gathering and analyzing the facts necessary to prove the urban legend right or wrong.

As a person who never really cared too much for urban legends or followed many of them, I found the book very interesting and informative. I mean, how would I ever know that Chachi of the TV series "Happy Days" was popular in Korea because his name literally translated to "penis".

Of course, for many people who have followed these legends, this book may be of no use to you because it may be a rehash of old legends that you may have known about already.

But nevertheless this is one entertaining book that I wouldn't mind sharing with friends.

                    Book Description

Restaurants are one of the most frequently started small businesses, yet have one of the highest failure rates. Survivors need a powerful strategic advantage: a sound business plan and feasibility study prior to opening. A new study from The Ohio State University has found the restaurant industry failure rate between 1996 and 1999 to be between 57-61 percent over three years. Don't be a statistic on the wrong side, plan now for success with this new book & CDRom package.

A business plan precisely defines your business, identifies your goals, and serves as your firm's resume. The basic components include a current and pro forma balance sheet, an income statement, and a cash flow analysis. It helps you allocate resources properly, handle unforeseen complications, and make good business decisions. Because it provides specific and organized information about your company and how you will repay borrowed money, a good business plan is a crucial part of any loan application. Additionally, it informs personnel, suppliers, and others about your operations and goals. Despite the critical importance of a business plan, many entrepreneurs drag their feet when it comes to preparing a written document. They argue that their marketplace changes too fast for a business plan to be useful or that they just don't have enough time. But just as a builder won't begin construction without a blueprint, eager business owners shouldn't rush into new ventures without a business plan.

The Cd Rom will cover the following subjects: Elements of a Business Plan, Cover sheet ,Statement of purpose, The Business, Description of The Restaurant, Marketing, Competition, Operating procedures, Personnel, Business insurance, Financial Data, Loan applications, Capital equipment and supply list, Balance sheet, Breakeven analysis, Pro-forma income projections (profit & loss statements), Three-year summary, Detail by month, first year, Detail by quarters, second and third years, Assumptions upon which projections were based, Pro-forma cash flow, Supporting Documents, For franchised businesses, a copy of franchise contract and all, supporting documents provided by the franchisor, Copy of proposed lease or purchase agreement for building space, Copy of licenses and other legal documents, Copy of resumes of all principals, Copies of letters of intent from suppliers, etc.

A new study from The Ohio State University has found the restaurant industry failure rate between 1996 and 1999 to be between 57-61 percent over three years. Don't be a statistic on the wrong side, plan now for success with this new book and CD-Rom package.
