Women of Faith.......2005-10-25
Sisters of our faith, prophets for our time - throughout the twelve portraits and stories of Sisters and Prophets, Mary Lou Sleevi weaves brilliant threads of sisterhood and prophecy. Her intensely personal stories remind us that theses women are related to us; they are family; they are our own. They are also gifted, visionary. Through them we learn something about ourselves and God. The reflections have doors wide open for personal involvement and response.
Sleevi's artwork, rendered in very contemporary "Hard Edge" form, uses vivid colors and stark simplicity to create bold images that tell stories of our faith through nearly forgotten tradition of sacred art. Her images capture both the strength and vunerability of these women of scripture in the moments of their most profound contact with God.
Through her representations of these women of vision, we are able to renew our vision of what it means to be a person of faith. At the heart of the salvation story, on the path of the Journey of Light, we find the strength and courage of Deborah's prophecy, the triumph of Hannah's faith, the gritty determination of the woman with the 12-year hemorrhage, and the joyful exuberance of Miriam's dance.
For many who have read and appreciated her first book, Women of the Word, this book will be a welcome second journey into the lives and stories of women who figure prominently - or not so prominently - in both Hebrew and Christian scriptures. For newcomers, the book will be a refreshing look into the lives and hearts of foremothers of our faith. -- from book's back cover

Book Description
We have to get away," Mama said, her voice right in my ear,"Do as I say, Laurel. So you don't die." I wrapped her shawl once around James, picked him up and ran as fast as I could. My bare feet slapped at the cold ground. I ran without looking back, straight to the woods.
Volume 1 of the In The Times of the Prophets series
Laurel's family lives in Missouri in 1838 with other members of the LDS Church, hoping to avoid the persecution that has followed them and their prophet Joseph Smith.
Laurel only wants to play with her friends by the blacksmith's shop, but her mother has forbidden Laurel from leaving the yard, even though she is almost twelve. Her mother can't explain whyshe just "has a feeling."
Suddenly a sound like thunder startles Laurel out of her daydreaming and horsemen plunge into the clearing around Jacob Haun's mill. Laurel and her brother run into the woods, and into a series of adventures that prove she is braver than she ever dreamed.

Fascinating Book.......2007-05-20
After reading Snow Flower and the Secret Fan, I had to learn more about foot binding and the slippers...wonderful book and the pictures are amazing.
Haunting and Beautiful.......2006-09-06
Like most Westerners, I am both horrified and fascinated by the Chinese tradition of footbinding. I found this book to be an excellent source of images and history, and cultural context of this rite of passage for Chinese girls. I appreciated that this book is written in a neutral voice, allowing the reader to explore the many meanings of footbinding, rather than simply condemning it as an abhorrant practice.
really lovely volume.......2006-03-14
A stunningly visual book, with wonderful pictures and lots of historical information. Enjoy!
Beautiful Photography.......2006-03-01
This is just a gorgeous book. I bought it to use in a class that I taught on culture. It has great "shock" value in terms of educating students about the power of culture over physical circumstances and "voluntary" body alteration. I do have an appreciation for the craftsmanship of the tiny slippers as well.
Lovely.
All my questions about the custom of footbinding were answered........2005-11-30
Subtitled "A Thousand Years of an Erotic Tradition", this 1997 book measures 10" by 10" square. On the cover is a photograph of more than two dozen authentic shoes which were handmade for the tiny bound feet of Chinese women.
I've always been interested in learning more about this custom, and this book clearly explains every single thing I've ever wanted to know. The author is an American photojournalist whose travels often took her to China. Often, she would find some of these tiny shoes in a market and started collecting them. She also did a lot of historical research and interviewed many elderly Chinese women who still can remember the details of their childhood foot binding. Some of them even allowed her to photograph their bare misshapen feet.
Foot binding has been outlawed in China since the Communist revolution. Women born after this time grow up with normal feet. But before 1949, little girls had to endure a painful childhood. It must have been awful but people really believed that if this wasn't done, the young girl would have no chance of getting a husband. Indeed, this was true. Marriages were arranged and the future mother-in-law would insist on seeing a shoe that the girl had embroidered. If the shoe was very small, it would be understood that the girl could withstand pain. If the embroidery was good, it would prove that the girl was well disciplined. The men also wanted wives with bound feet. Not only did it reflect on the man's wealth and standing in the community but it was also an erotic turn-on.
They say that one picture is worth a thousand words, and this book certainly proves it. There are many pictures of the tiny shoes and of the women wearing them. I was impressed by the complexity of the workmanship and their startling beauty. But the most moving of all were the photos of the bare feet themselves. Looking at them gave me a sick and uncomfortable feeling.
I loved this book because it opened my mind to a culture that is very foreign to me. It made me understand exactly what these women's lives had been for more than ten centuries. Yes, I was saddened. But I was also enlightened. I learned something. And that made this book very worthwhile.
This is a beautiful book. I highly recommend it. But it is certainly not for the squeamish.

Full-length comic story.......2005-04-11
Adult black & white graphic novel ("full-length comics story").
This is the sixth (or at least sixth) Housewives book (not counting "Housewives at Play Book 1" which is a collection of the first five comics (not the picture books, but the comic magazines). This book is a full-length comic as opposed to the others in the housewives graphic book series, which are collections of pictures. This book falls between the fifth and sixth comic magazines. The housewife comic series is published in a small thin adult comic magazine-form, and follows the story of Cathy, a housewife, that becomes a slave to two female neighbors, acquires a slave of her own (one of her daughters female friends) and introduces her daughter to the life-style. This particular book-length comic tells the story of Cathy in an insane asylum telling her story of her life as a lesbian slave to a female doctor.
An interesting well-drawn comic. The book contains bondage, lesbian sexual slavery, whipping, waterworks, and incest.
Book Description
Reading The Odd Body is like having your doctor patiently answer all your random questions, one by one. But Dr. Juan goes well beyond the usual and ordinary things people wonder about bodies, like why most individuals are right-handed or why you get chills when chalk screeches across a blackboard. He also tells readers how a dead body is made into a mummy, the success rate of those who bore holes in their own heads to relieve headaches, and much, much more. The Odd Body is a unique combination of fun and fascinating material that's delivered by an expert who happens to be a great storyteller. The book's question-and-answer format makes it easy to pick up, turn to any page, and immediately become drawn into the intricacies of anatomy and physiology while gaining a better understanding of humans' need to know more about themselves.
Customer Reviews:
Good Book.......2005-09-06
"The Odd Body" is on of the most fascinating books I have read so far. It is
not one of those boring books on Body Science that you had to read back in
High School. This book answers all the weird, silly and bizarre questions
you have ever wanted to know about the human body.
It answers interesting questions like:
a) can you keep a severed head alive? (Something I have always wanted to
know)
b) Can we die laughing?
c) Can we live for ever?
Once I started to read this book I found myself unable to put it down. So if
you are the type of person who is into the mysteries of the human body I
would highly recommend this book.

The most up-to-date and comprehensive book of its kind, it explores the ever-changing images of queer characters onscreen as well as the work of queer filmmakers and the cultural histories of queer audiences--from the works of discreetly homosexual filmmakers during Hollywood's Golden Age and classical Hollywood's attempt to purge sex perversion from films, to queer exploitation and physique films, cinematic responses to AIDS, and how contemporary Hollywood deals with queer issues. An essential volume for film buffs and anyone interested in sexuality and culture. Visit our website for sample chapters!

Now let's do something!.......2007-07-29
I read this book between showers on a UK beach holiday.
I found it easy to read, lots of information in an easy to understand lay out. Rather than just telling me how to do things there are many exhibits which show you how and provide lots of ideas to relate to your own business.
It has certainly given me food for thought and hopefully this will encourage me to start my own business sooner rather than later.
Just For Beginners.......2007-05-09
If you are into marketing at all - especially online marketing - you know about Dan Kennedy. And you either love him or hate him. I actually love his approach and strategies because at the end of the day - they work. So when I read this book I was wondering how informative it would be. I probably should have read this book when I was starting my business because while it is pretty comprehensive etc. it is written primarily for the beginning marketer. So if you are starting your business - I recommend that you pick this book up and introduce yourself to Dan's philosophy and proven strategies for marketing your business. It's worth the read.
Ultimate it is not.......2007-04-12
I am in the planning stages of a new business venture. I have never written a marketing plan before and needed some insight and advice as to what tactics work and how to write the plan itself.
This book reads like a list of useful one-liner marketing tips and examples of how the author's friends have used them. It is not a how to book on writing a marketing plan, and it does not go into much depth as far as how you might accomplish the things that he recommends.
The most annoying part of this book is that every other page contains an advertisement for you to join some 12-week commitment mailing list that the author has created. He entices you by saying that you will receive additional tips and information for 12 weeks.
HELLO!!! McFLY!!! Didn't I just buy your book so that I could learn your marketing insights? YES! So then why do you make it seem like I just paid for the teaser information, and that the good stuff is behind the curtain that requires me to become a pawn in your marketing career? My price of admission stops at the price of this book, and it should not seem like I'm only getting half of the story that I paid for!
Get Back to the Basics.......2007-04-05
If you are just starting out or your business is
not where you want it to be. This is a good book
to look at and see where to begin or just where
to start. This is a must have for any startup
small or home business.
