    Book Description

In 1951 Robert Motherwell published a collection of writings called The Dada Painters and Poets: An Anthology. Conceived as a sequel to that volume, Surrealist Painters and Poets: An Anthology does for Surrealism what Motherwell's book did for Dadaism. The concept and contents were discussed with Robert Motherwell and met with his enthusiastic approval.

The essays, manifestos, poems, and texts in this anthology offer a composite picture of the Surrealists-- their convictions, styles, and spirit--from the movement's beginnings in France just after World War I to its second flowering in America after World War II. The book includes writers and artists from Belgium, Chile, Czechoslovakia, Cuba, Egypt, England, France, Germany, Guyana, Italy, Martinique, Mauritius, Mexico, Spain, Switzerland, Senegal, Uruguay, and the United States. Caws's main criterion for inclusion was that the works be the best and most representative of the different forms of Surrealism. Among others, the artists and writers include André Breton, Marcel Duchamp and Rrose Sélavy, Max Ernst, Mina Loy, Francis Picabia, and Tristan Tzara.

4 out of 5 stars Wendel Is Us.......2001-06-30

Howard Cruse's Wendel comic strip chronicled the adventures of Wendel, Ollie, Sterno, Deb, Tina and the rest of the gang in the Advocate Magazine during the 1980s - a decade on unequaled turbulence, triumph and tragedy for the gay and lesbian community. Seeing these strips together for the first time, I am struck by what an important legacy this represents. Cruse brings a face and heart to the central topics of the day. Creeping conservatism, outing and coming out, gay parenting, queer politics, bashing, gay normative behavior, AIDS, rifts in the community, the rise of the gym cult and homophobia in the media - it's all here.

His little community is our community, and he renders his characters' adventures with such loving care and compassion that you cannot help but be moved by and relate to their world. I always thought of Wendel as a "cute little strip," but this collection proves that it has the epic sweep, vision and, on occasion, even the gravity of an Angels in America or Tales of the City. And, as a portrait of the everyqueer, it runs circles around flashy fluff like Queer as Folk.

Wendel All Together isn't just one for the time capsule, however. Its insight, humor and drama remain fresh today. In many ways, only the shoes, hairstyles and AIDS meds have changed!

            Book Description

Chosen an "Outstanding Book on the Subject of Human Rights in the United States" by the Gustavus Myers Center for the Study of Human Rights.

In this volume of incisive essays, Ward Churchill looks at representations of American Indians in literature and film, delineating a history of cultural propaganda that has served to support the continued colonization of Native America.

During each phase of the genocide of American Indians, the media has played a critical role in creating easily digestible stereotypes of Indians for popular consumption. Literature about Indians was first written and published in order to provoke and sanctify warfare against them. Later, the focus changed to enlisting public support for "civilizing the savages," stripping them of their culture and assimilating them into the dominant society. Now, in the final stages of cultural genocide, it is the appropriation and stereotyping of Native culture that establishes control over knowledge and truth.

The primary means by which this is accomplished is through the powerful publishing and film industries. Whether they are the tragically doomed "noble savages" walking into the sunset of Dances With Wolves or Carlos Castaneda's Don Juan, the exotic mythical Indians constitute no threat to the established order.

Literature and art crafted by the dominant culture are an insidious political force, disinforming people who might otherwise develop a clearer understanding of indigenous struggles for justice and freedom. This book is offered to counter that deception, and to move people to take action on issues confronting American Indians today.

1 out of 5 stars Bad research from an Indian who isn't.......2005-05-09

Ward Churchill's bad research is evident in the fact that he can't even spell names correctly. More serious is the fact that Churchill is NOT an American Indian. His tribal membership was honorary and his diatribes have angered the very people for whom he claims to speak. Avoid at all costs and seek real facts from real historians or AIM.

1 out of 5 stars Honorary Indian Lit.......2005-03-10

Ward Churchill's "scholarship" would be laughed out of publishing houses if he did not have the "excuse" of supposedly being Indian--that ugly bit of reverse racism that presumes that Indians can't do first-rate academic or intellectual work and ignores the achievements of real American Indian scholars like Joseph Marshall, D'Arcy McNickle, Kate Shanley, Vine and Ella Deloria, and Donald Fixico. Like Jamake Highwater, Churchill's intellectual career has been built on a foundation of patronizing racist assumptions.

In a single note while discussing his extensive study of Westerns, he manages to misspell the names of Lash Larue and Johnny Mack Brown. That's a random selection; pick your own on any page. The Devil is in the details, and an honorary Indian needs to do his homework. If you screw up the little stuff, how can we trust the big stuff? Easy answer? Don't.

Churchill's "deconstruction" of the American Western is no more accurate than the depictions of Indians he derides. Replacing one ignorant prejudice with another, however appealling, is not progress. And taking the poor research and invective of a "honorary Indian" for the views of Indian people is a mistake. With friends like this, who needs the Dawes Act?

4 out of 5 stars Good set of essays.......2004-06-18

This is a must read for anyone who has a passing interest in the Native American in popular culture. It will make any fan of Westerns (movies/books) think twice about indulging in such things. This is not as compelling as some of his other work but it is still valuable nonetheless.

5 out of 5 stars ward churchill's second best, this time with improved prose.......2002-08-17

I would say this is worth 4 stars, but seeing how one reviewer is bent on giving it the worst possible to make a statement rather than a review, I decided to attempt to neutralize his rating.

Churchill's review on cultural myths and cinema tragecomedies that rewrite history to their liking are somewhat striking. One would expect that there is some bias, but to see it put under the microscope as churchill does is more than an eye-opener.

It's not another "white man steals again" books, but rather an intellectually secure book that makes claims outside the public spectrum of politics. And do I dare say, sometimes radical politics are right! Indigenous americans have been slandered. John Wayne has only secured the subtlely racist notions of indigenous savagery and such.

The truth will set you free

4 out of 5 stars Fantasies are fiction.......2001-12-07

Ward Churchill has hit upon a very important and eye opening subject for those that believe everything their history teachers and the media dishes out to them about the American Indian. Mainstream America is still in the dark about the reality of the first peoples of this country. I was moved by many portions of this book and would love to see it made into a PBS series for public consumption. The only sad part is most of the people that need to be informed wouldn't think of reading this book or watching anything on PBS. It is a consise and important work.

Considering the quality of Louis Gianetti's writing, it is both shocking and disheartening that "Masters of the American Cinema" is currently out of print. Delivering enlightened, career-spanning essays on superlative filmmakers such as Welles, Capra, Keaton, Lubitsch, and Ford, Gianetti also examines the cinema of still-working directors like Altman and Kubrick. Indispensable for readers interested in the American motion picture.

                Book Description

D.W. Griffith, most famous for his controversial film Birth of a Nation, was one of the undisputed pioneers of the film industry. This illustrated monograph, first published in 1940, traces Griffith's rise from an obscure actor-poet to the most imaginitive and resourceful film producer of his time. In this facsimile edition of a classic, Iris Barry gives a critical evaluation of the man under whose aegis the basic principles of the art of motion pictures were first fully developed. As Barry writes in the book's conclusion, "...the men who make films today know who it was that taught them the basis of their craft. The American public, which for 45 years has so keenly enjoyed and supported the motion picture, has been somewhat relctuant to allow it the status of an art. Now, gradually, they too are recognizing that in Griffith they have one of the greatest and most original artists of our time."

"Young, virile, and hungering for something more than a stagnant New England mill town has to offer, Timothy is at a crossroads. He can work in the local lumberyard, his nightlife limited to fleeting, clandestine encounters with strangers. Or he can earn more money than he ever dreamed possible. The price: the next three years of his life. ¶ Now, willingly enslaved by the enigmatic man known only as Montclair, Timothy is imprisoned on a lavish estate. Here, his harshest nightmares--and most erotic dreams--are about to become reality. Never looking back, Timothy plunges into a bizarre, seductive world where his master's wish is his command--and where the ties that bind might just lead to true emancipation..."--© zebraz

                5 out of 5 stars still a classic.......2004-06-24

There's nothing new in this edition so if you have one of the earlier printings, that will do. However, if you don't and you consider yourself a fan of gay SM fiction, you must at least borrow a copy to read. Though we don't learn much about The Network that sells human beings into what is initially consensual slavery, we see the beginning of one young man's journey into that world. Along the way Preston explores the biases that switches once faced (they might still in some places) and the interworkings of a few men's minds and groins. Well done.

                      Book Description

Here is a challenge that puzzle fans will find simply irresistible: a really smart, varied, and original collection of more than 200 contemporary brainteasers. Some are visual, others geometric, and still more are topological. They play games with words and numbers, and with matchsticks and coins. And many of them are of World Puzzle Championship level; in other words, really hard. Divide figures into their congruent parts, or rearrange the pieces of a patterned star so that the result precisely matches a checkered cross. Try a little puzzling origami: fold an origami square exactly six times to create the shape of a house. Do cubical inversions, shift coins around from shape to shape in a given number of moves, and much more.

5 out of 5 stars top notch puzzle book.......2005-11-14

Great puzzle book! - full of reworked classics, but with plenty of new twists and ideas - though you'll need to get plenty of paper and a pair of scissors to work many of the puzzles.

Let's hope for more puzzles from Serhiy!

5 out of 5 stars Not Your TYpical Puzzle Book.......2005-06-16

If you're an afficianado of visual/logicial puzzles, you've probably shared my experience when browsing through so-called new puzzle books at your local bookstore-they all recycle the same old familiar chestnuts! There are a few places to find original puzzles-Games Magazine, the World Puzzle Championships, Scott Kim, Cliff Johnson, Think Fun-but not many. Happily, Grabarchuk's new book is a welcome departure from the norm. His puzzles are original and first rate, in a league far above your typical Mensa puzzle book. Highly recommended.

                      5 out of 5 stars A great 3-quote book!.......2007-07-09

This is a great 3-quote book (i.e., you will have quoted it three times in conversation within the first 24 hours of starting to read it). What makes a great 3-quote book? A good story with interesting characters, a great story teller, and meaningful insight. If you are a student, learn from the well researched wisdom of the Capital Group. If you are a manager, recognize how to motivate, promote, and build great teams for greater returns. If you are an investor, take notes.

                      5 out of 5 stars Capital, a must read.......2005-05-17

If you are an investor and haven't learned of the advantages of the American Funds Family of Mutual Funds and its parent, Capital Reasearch and Management Company, this is a must read. Capital Research and Mngmt is a quiet company, they do not advertise, they do not sit for interviews or do press releases. They only manage money, period. As a result, they do it better than anybody. This book is the only place you will get in-depth information about the company short of visiting a broker who is equally enlightened. Discovering an equally enlightened broker, may I say, is rare to find in its own right. Rich people know about this company, but finding a rich person who will talk is equally difficult. Just read it, you'll see.

4 out of 5 stars Tedious at times, but a worthwhile read.......2004-06-16

I read this book on the advice of my investment advisor. The first half was tedious but the second half was packed with valuable information about a great company. This is stuff that I can use in my own business, and I don't regret the time that it took to wade through the early chapters.

                      2 out of 5 stars Great Subject...Lousy Book!.......2004-05-05

What a great story! Capital Group has one of the most amazing long-term performances and is one of the most unique organizations in the industry! But this book just stinks. I can barely believe the Charlie Ellis wrote this. It's completely disjointed. There's no structure at all. It's like they just published his notes. He skips across generations within a single paragraph. He contradicts himself. About 150 of the 300 pages is fluff and adds nothing to the story. About 1/3 of EVERY page is footnotes that add nothing. He references chapters within the same chapter. It's just terrible. It's obvious the publisher was just in a hurry to get the book out to make a buck off the mutual fund scandal before the hype died off. How ironic that Capital Group takes a long term approach, launching new funds against the tide, while the people at Wiley (by launching this book before it was ready) have shown themselves to be a bunch of short-sighted money grubbers.

1 out of 5 stars For students & admirers only!.......2004-04-15

I couldn't wait to get my hands on this book - it would be the first time that anything comprehensive has been written on the organization. I tried to navigate my way through all of the footnotes and irrelevancies but without much success. There seems to be no real structure to the book. Sure; the overriding message is that the organization is vastly successful, and the author praises Capital throughout. Frankly I'm surprised that the editors didn't intervene and reformat the entire thing from start to finish. A disappointing read - I can only liken it to a textbook without a curriculum, and oh-so disjointed. Oh and BTW - I work here too!
