At last, here is the compendium of cigarette packs that collectors have been waiting for! Joe Giesenhagen has compiled a fantastic collection of cigarette packs dating from the 1880s to the present, in all colors, shapes and sizes. See the incredible diversity of character in cigarette packaging over the past century, and the amazing creative effort some companies exerted to make their cigarettes appear exotic, luxurious, colorful, feminine, masculine, festive, or even medicinal. This book includes color photographs of over 4000 packs of cigarettes to accompany in-depth listings of Merchants & Vendors, Factory Numbers, Merchant Code list, up-to-date pricing information, anecdotes of the industry, and much, much, more. Cigarette packs are a great field for collecting, with a huge diversity, availability, and price range. This book is an excellent ground-level entrance for anyone looking to begin a collection and a valuable resource for anyone in the process of building one.

A little out of date already.......2003-07-23
Unfortunately when this book was written, online auction sites (very popular ones) had not really contained a lot of tobacciana. Now the prices for the packs are out of date and out of touch with what is happening on these auction sites. Some packs he lists as around $$$ have gone for more than $$$ at auction, and some he lists for $$ can't be given away, etc. It is a good compendium of information on packs, manufacturers and dates, but the prices are not to be counted on.

Are you naturally amazing? Have you been sent here from a distant dying solar system? Do you have a preoccupation with dubious rubber suits?
If any of the above apply, then The Superhero Handbook is for you! Find the answers to all your questions, plus lots of advice on how to develop your superhero potential. You'll soon learn that you're not alone, that your retro hairstyling choices are perfectly normal, and that there's more to being a superhero than saving the planet, changing in phone booths, and struggling to disguise your fatal flaws.
On the heels of the movie releases of Star Wars III: Revenge of the Sith, Batman Begins, and Fantastic Four, everyone will be asking themselves, "Am I a superhero, too?" Unveil your true identity.

Weak and Derivative.......2007-09-14
This book had the single virtue of being short, so that the suffering was not prolonged, so I will be similarly brief. There's been an outburst of faux-manuals about how to become a superhero, or survive robot or zombie attacks. Some are quite excellent. Others are just average. And a few are coming in at the tail end of the trend in a naked bid to cash in. This book is of the last variety. Overpriced for its skimpy content and exceptionally unfunny attempts at humor, it is to be avoided. It is not one-tenth as good as Barry Neville's definitive "How to be a Superhero". Put this book down, back away, and run for the door. Run, I say! And go buy the Neville volume.
The Secrets of the Hero Business Revealed.......2007-01-06
Whether you are a mutant or some crazy guy who loves capes this is one of the most instructive books you'll ever read on how to be a super hero.
Important topics such as breaking through walls, catchphrases that should never be used, excuses for breaking a date, hideout and mode of transportation, and of course the ever important rules to think about when hiring a side-kick (and coming up with a more ridiculous costume for them).
For those unsure about the dark side, this manual discusses some of the downfalls of being a bad guy (such as the dumb henchmen you'll constantly be forced to destroy) and questions to consider before joining that guy who keeps trying to convince you to help him take over the world.
Possibly the funniest book of its type.
So you want to be a superhero..........2006-12-05
Michael Powell presents us with a short and humorous text on what you need to do to be a superhero. Beginning with symptoms/traits of superheroism budding inside you, selecting a name and costume, accessorizing with sidekicks, tips for wisely choosing you arch-nemesis, selecting appropriate catchphrases and headquarters, carefully choosing your day-job and how to protect your alter (civilian) ego, even what to do once you get on in years and shouldn't be mainstream superheroing anymore.
Quite a funny little book. It's another off-the-wall satyrical look at comics. While the author doesn't specifically name many heroes, he does insinuate the likes of Superman, Spider-man, Batman, Wolverine, Darth Vader(?), and... George Foreman. It really is worth the read and it won't take but a few hours to finish it. Plenty of artwork throughout the book so the written text is only about half the book. There's a few other similar books out and this one holds its own against them.
Wear your underwear on the outside!.......2006-05-25
This delightfully brilliant and silly book called my name in the Public Library in San Francisco's Mission district. And I have since bought two copies. It is a semi-serious little handbook with quite pragmatic advice on being a superhero. It contains warnings about possible pitfalls, and some sound advice on how to juggle jobs, relationships, liability issues while saving the world from evil. It is a must-have for any superhero or as a gift for that special superhero in your life. Excuse me, I need to go and work on my cape.

BUDDY WAS THE GREATEST!!!!!!!.......2004-01-18
BUDDY HOLLY WAS THE GREATEST ROCK STAR TO HAVE EVER PERFORMED.TOO BAD HIS LIFE ENDED WHEN HE WAS SO YOUNG.I HAVE BEEN A BUDDY HOLLY FAN SINCE 1971 AND HIS SONGS ARE TIMELESS.HE HAS INFLUENCED COUNTLESS OTHER PERFORMERS.THE ROLLING STONES FIRST EVER HIT,NOT FADE AWAY, WAS A SONG WRITTEN BY THE LATE,THE GREAT BUDDY HOLLY.I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK!!!!!!!
The best biography of Buddy...and best balanced..........2001-12-31
I've been a fan of Buddy's since he was still alive. This is the best biography available. The authors do not deal in sensationalism and wacko explorations of Buddy's sex life or possible contributions to the crash of the plane. He died at 22, and was only famous for two years, and never was wealthy. He can be expected to have had moments of immaturity, and to have made mistakes in judgement. But the overwhelming evidence is that he was a nice, normal young adult with abnormal talent for singing, songwriting, guitar-playing and record-producing. He's been gone for more than 40 years, and he left about 80 recordings behind. Those performances are still wonderful, and this book tells you a lot about how they were created and captured and preserved. Who needs anything else?
Rave On!.......2000-10-25
This is, hands down, the best biography of Buddy Holly available. I have read them all and though others have their moments (mainly rare photos) they are spoiled with proven factual errors and unsubstantiated rumors. John Goldrosen's book is the standard by which all others are judged.
Goldrosen is a stickler for accuracy and his research is meticulous. He also keeps close to all things Buddy Holly. I first met him at the dedication of the Buddy Holly statue in Lubbock in 1986. Bill Griggs (founder of the sadly discontinued Buddy Holly Memorical Society) thinks highly of Goldrosen and there is no higher compliment for a historian of Buddy Holly.
The updates keep making the book better (and more accurate) but I will always keep my first copy which I've had signed by Buddy's parents, his brothers, Jerry Allison, Niki Sullivan, Joe Mauldin, and, of course, the author John Goldrosen. If you only read one biography of Buddy Holly, this should be the one. If you have read others and would like to know what Buddy was really like, get the latest edition of this book. You will not be disappointed.
Update 2005: Sad to note that this book is out of print. So is the earlier version titled "The Buddy Holly Story" by the same authors. It's still worth reading if you can find a copy. Check your local library or used book store. Hopefully another publisher will pick up the book and it will be available again.
Best one of all.......2000-08-13
This is the book to buy if you want an accurate, well-written biography of Buddy Holly, the greatest rocker of them all and the most influential person in the genre's history. If it were possible, I would give this book ten stars. It is absolutely the best biography of Buddy Holly. I got my first copy in August 1975 and have gotten updated versions as they came out. I've read it several times. John Goldrosen spent a year or so of his life (circa 1972) researching this book and talking to the people involved.

A must have for any FOrgotten Realms Enthusiast.......2000-06-17
This book is arguably one of the best forgotten realms supplements ever published. It details all of the major areas and locales that you are likely to encounter. In short, you MUST get this book
Book Description
Brands are typically associated with products and businesses, but David McNally and Karl Speak suggest the same concept can be applied to individuals and relationships, with powerful results. Be Your Own Brand shows how personal branding, like product branding, creates a special type of relationship fueled by a strong belief system and tied to an emotional connection. The authors help readers understand the importance of relationships as the currency for success in their personal and business lives. They present specific tools for success that include simple principles that define the characteristics of a branded relationship; a clear model that defines one's unique personal brand; and a way to distill the essence of that brand into a meaningful and actionable "brand promise." This blueprint for "personal branding" will help all readers achieve maximum career success - quickly and permanently - without personal compromise or selling out.

Self help for marketers- one useful idea.......2006-05-06
This book re-casts in marketing speak Adam Smith's old injunction for businessmen, that they ought to be honorable, because dishonorable behavior will damage their reputation, and thereby damage their business. Of course, those who have not noticed that other people judge them by their behavior, are probably so far gone that this book wouldn't help them anyway.
That said, thinking of oneself as a commodity, like toothpaste or hamburgers, can be a useful heuristic device for understanding the perceptions other people make about you, and where their understanding might not align with your own. It is, as the authors point out, not enough to simply be a good person. If other people do not "perceive" you as a good person, then you're unlikely to get many of the benefits of being a good person. The authors' most interesting peice of advice is to use metrics to measure how well your behavior matches your "brand" (the kind of person you want to be) and to also actively measure how well your "brand" accords with others' perceptions of you.
This is a rather starkly utilitarian perspective on self-development. This book contains several ideas in the details that are useful thought-experiments for understanding where there may be a disconnect between what you think you are, and what other people think you are.
Daves review.......2002-08-27
"I approached this book with great skepticism. Seeing myself as a brand was not appealing but the truth is we are all 'branded' in the eyes of others. What struck me immediately was the observation that people cannot see inside of me, they judge me by my actions. In the end I found the ideas in this book to be intriguing and compelling"
Be Your Own Brand.......2002-06-04
This is one of the most valuable books I've read. It's very insightful concepts and ideas inspired me to go after some long-held career goals just by using my natural abilities. Thanks to the author, it's working!
