Customer Reviews:
Encyclopedia--yes, but organized? no.........2006-10-30
This book is very rich in techniques for all kinds of pastel work, from ink and wash with pastel overlay to oil pastel. Many artists' works are featured, and there are plenty of demos on how the work was done. Plus there is a beginning section on various stroke techniques and the effect of colored stocks on how pastel looks applied.
My beef with this book is that it is not particularly organized. So if you are interested in oil pastel, you have to sift through 20 index entries where oil pastel is just mentioned in passing to where it is demonstrated in full.
Still, there is a huge variety in this book, so there is bound to be something to appeal to any artist, no matter what their technique or style.
This book is a treasure.......2005-08-31
This is one of the best art books I have found. The author teaches a lot in a few words. (Have you ever opened an art book, and turned to a subject, only to ask "Is that all they are going to say?") Part 1 is Techniques. Part 2 is Themes. Part 2 breaks general subjects like Landscape, Environment, and The Figure, down to teach you about Seasons, Space and Distance, Industrial Settings, Mood and Atmosphere, Standing Figures, Groups of People, Figures in a Setting, Full-length Portraits, Pattern in Still Life, etc. Even though each section is only a few paragraphs, I learned more than I thought I would. Each section also has several artworks with a paragraph explaining what the artist did.
This book shows a wider variety of illustrative styles than most I've seen. I found I could take a new subject, and flip through it until I found the style I thought would best represent it. It is full of color, good teaching, and variety.
Tremendous shame this book has gone out of print.......2000-04-01
As a professional artist working with pastel, I find this book to be an ongoing source of inspiration and reminders of alternative ways of 'doing' pastels. When I get stuck in a rut, or feel 'stale', browsing this book is one of my favorite ways to get rolling again. With the growing popularity of pastels as an artistic medium, this book truly should be re-issued.
I looked for it for several months locally, then placed my order through Amazon.com. It took six months, but the wait was well worth it! Thank you, Amazon.com!

Book Description
Comme des Garcons -- "like the boys" -- is the title of a French soldier's song. It is also the label of Japanese designer Rei Kawakubo. Reserved in word but radical in action, Kawakubo is one of the most influential and subversive figures in contemporary fashion. At the forefront of stylistic movements that rocked the fashion world in the early eighties, Kawakubo created Comme des Garcons in 1973 and continues to reinvent her vision of clothing with each show.
Her mysterious creations are often closer to sculpture than clothing. Ragged, asymmetric, voluminous, or distressed, Kawakubo's designs mix eastern and western influences to articulate new shapes and a new definition of beauty. A figure at once rigorous, daring, and intellectual, this reclusive Japanese designer consistently receives praise from the press each season, both for her effect on new trends in beauty and for influencing the newest wave of young talent. Restlessly innovative, Rei Kawakubo has overturned every fashion convention over the past twenty-five years, ultimately redefining the very meaning of fashion itself.
Customer Reviews:
Ceci n'est pas comme "comme des garcons...".......2001-08-27
One can only assume that the author of this book felt that (s)he also had the genius touch and creativity of Comme des Garcons' Rei Kawakubo. Unfortunately this is not the case. The essay is pointless, dull, and without enlightenment. The photographs--reprints of Comme des Garcons publicity materials--do not describe, critique, or illuminate the fashion or design work done by Kawakubo or Comme des Garcons, a dubious artsy pose instigated by Kawakubo herself. Only Grace Mirabella's foreward and the one-page company history at the end offer anything of interest to those fascinated by Kawakubo's amazing and uniquely original designs. What a waste.
Japanese Art..........2000-10-06
I was so excited when I saw a book had been published about Comme des Garcons and I was so disappointed when I got it in my hands. The book is full of very "arty" photographs of the designs but so arty that one can not even really see the clothes!
I have almost every book in the Universe of Fashion series and they are all superior in every way to this one - I was really sad about this as I LOVE Japanese design...therefore I still have to give it at least 3 stars.

Disorganized, Disjointed and Disappointing.......2007-06-08
I alway enjoy checking out new points of view on Japanese manga criticism, so I ordered this book to see what the author had to add to the work done by Fred Schodt and other manga scholars.
While this book has its merits, I found it difficult to read, appreciate and use as a reference. By titling it "500 heroes and villains," it gives the illusion that it provides lot of content, or at least a lot of manga reviewed in this volume. But really, the author just dissected several characters from a few manga and split them up into 'groups' based on their roles in the various series.
Splitting up the heroes and villains for each series and talking about them in separate sections of the book makes it harder to understand the relationship dynamic between these 'good' and 'bad' characters' and how they drive the plot of the various series. The result is a disjointed critique that is difficult to cross-reference or refer to as a resource for discovering new manga series or understanding the history of manga.
Also, there are a lot of listings and descriptions of characters without illustrations to accompany them. I would rather that the author had concentrated on fewer series and provided illustrations for each entry rather than jamming in a lot of entries w/o accompanying artwork. Without artwork to illustrate the various points she's making about each character, it's like a cookbook without pictures of food. it does the job, but does it really entice you to cook the dish, much less think its worthwhile to do so?
Entries jump from decade to decade, describing a character from a series from the 1970's next to one introduced in 2002. This is because the author opted to list characters alphabetically by name.
Again, this is a bizarre way to organize this book. Most readers relate to a manga series by its title, not by its individual characters' names. For example, most fans of "Bleach" by Tite Kubo would look for "Bleach" vs. looking up Ichigo Kurosaki, the name of the lead character, much less try to find him in the "Heroes" section.
I'm tempted to sell this book back -- but there are things in here that aren't available in other similar books. I'll just gnash my teeth anytime I try to refer to it -- but I wouldn't recommend it for either the casual manga fan or the reader looking for insight into the evolution of manga and why it's so special and unique compared to Western comics.
Bad Spelling!.......2007-01-03
Now when I first picked up this book I thought it would be an interesting read. When I started to read through information on my favourite heroes and villians I was shocked to see the misspellings. Helen McCarthy couldn't even spell Ikumi right, I suppose it could be a typo but should have been checked before published. Sohma wrong put it as Soma, she should have checked these things out.
I was very disappointed.
Interesting and Rich.......2006-05-15
When I saw it today in my favorite bookshop I did not imagine how interesting this book could be. It's updted and treat almost equally shoujo and shounen. Find in there some characters such as Hiromi Oka from Ace Wo Nerae shows how the author research was good.
Great acquisition for anime and manga fans.

A blend of choral and vocal pedagogy.......2004-02-28
Key Choral Concepts is a condensed version of the 488 page curriculum guide compiled by Duane S. Crowther. Easy to read and comprehend, this book should be a necessity in every choral conductor's library. Methods and lessons are simplified (yet not watered-down)using both choral methodologies and vocal pedagogy in an affordable, no-nonsense presentation. This book would be ideal in a university education setting, providing choral educators-in-training with a convenient resource for reference. Bravo!

Excellent resource for adults working with kids........1998-04-23
(See review for Kites for Everyone by Margaret Greger) Another winner from Margaret! Even more kite patterns and plans and practical advice on using kites in the classroom, or other structured setting with several kids.
Excellent book for adults working with children!.......1998-04-23
Looking for a resource to interest kids in history, science, math, or art? This will do it with a minimum of materials, and no arguments or boredom from the kids (if you take the author's tips to heart!). Many excellent ideas on sharing information with kids (and teaching facts and skills). Also, includes a wide variety of plans and patterns of kites for all age groups, and all group sizes. Materials range from paper, glue, tape, sticks (dowel rods), to rip-stop nylon and fiberglass rods. As a 28 year kite aficiando, who has made numerous public presentations on the many facets of kites, I heartily recommend this book (and its sequel, More Kites for Everyone)! You will not be disappointed in the level of information, technical detail, or enthusiasm with which the author shares her knowledge.

Book Description
This isn't just "someone's opinion"...It's the first, definitive, evidence-based guide to effective management. In The Truth About Managing People...and Nothing but the Truth, Robbins delivers principles you can rely on throughout your entire management career--regardless of your organization, role or title. This is a management book that cuts through the soft opinion and conjecture books that have dominated the business shelves in recent years and shows what management researchers know actually works, or doesn't work, when it comes to managing people.
Drawing on the author's 30+ years of research and textbook writing experience, Robbins has distilled the results of thousands of research studies on human behavior into over 60 proven "truths" that can transform how you manage people--and the results that are achieved. The author provides guidance to you organized around key, human-behavior-related problemareas that managers face (hiring, motivation, leadership, communication, team building, conflict management, job design, evaluating performance and coping with change), along with guidance to help you apply the information and improve your managerial effectiveness.
Customer Reviews:
Simply the truth.......2007-08-16
This book is good! I recommend it to all managers and supervisors. it's worth the time to read.
Rolando Alberto
Truthfully, This Book Will Help You Do More Than Just "Manage".......2007-08-15
Robbins's book is a pleasure to read. He presents multiple topics in a short, easily digestible modular format and then allows you to learn more by providing you with references that go into much further detail. Let's face it - most management books are worse than worthless and are either New Age fluff or bluster and swagger. Robbins instead avoids the know-it-all approach by supporting each of his 'truths' with empirical evidence from sociology, organizational psychology, assertiveness training, and literature on leadership and group dynamics.
Unless you already have a Ph.D in Social Psychology, an MBA, and 10 years' worth of corporate experience, you will learn something new with this book. You'll do more than just 'manage' - you will succeed. Use this book as a springboard and a guide, as Robbins suggests, and you will almost certainly improve your workplace performance.
Good primer on managing.......2007-06-30
This book provides some basic information on how to manage and interact overall with people in the work place. It has helpful refresher information on group dynamics and motivation. The book is organized in 63 numbered "truths" that I thought were interesting and insightful. Each "truth" was about a page or two, so there wasn't as much detailed info on how to handle all of the situations discussed.
Some Good Some Bad.......2006-07-09
This is a pretty good book for learning for things to look out for when managing people, but not being pro-Christian it does have some seemingly immoral suggestions, one for example is to make people dependant on you by doing things as extreme as destroying instruction booklets on how to do certain things at work, so that for someone to learn what to do they must go to you.
There is also the strange advice, "Truth 19", to not criticize the employees when they mess up but rather their messed up behavior (which seems to have something to do with the "do not judge" concept, which is often taken out of context in the Bible.) Ironically on the same page the author says to say something like this to the employee, "Bob, I'm concerned with your attitude toward your work. You were a half hour late...". Notice how the criticizing is on Bob, not his behavior?
I don't recommend this book for a newbie Christian who is a manager or who wants to be one, but for one who is solidy grounded in the Bible I wouldn't mind giving this too them. I might point out it isn't perfect in a note or something however, like the don't criticize the person contradiction, so that they don't think you're endorsing the whole book.
A summary of diverse aspects of management thought.......2005-08-03
Mr Robbins' best-selling book is packed with briefs on effective management thinking and examples on diverse topics. An excellent, useful, and well-organized book comprised of 63 sound nuggets of management wisdom collected from many credible sources. The 10 categories make it easy to locate an item of particular interest. The small easy-to-digest `truths' make it easy to read a different truth each morning or to devour the book in one longer sitting. Each `truth' is also well documented if you'd like to explore the item in more depth. This book makes a great refresher, introduction, or point of embarkment on further research.
