Book Description
From Savile Row to Carnaby Street, from the bohemian dress of the Oscar Wilde circle in the nineteenth century to the punk street styles of recent years, London has been a significant source of fashion style. This stunning book, a rich and stimulating history of two hundred years of London fashion, explores the circumstances and characteristics that have made the “London look” distinctive.
Focusing on the design, production, marketing, and consumption of clothing during this period, the authors place these activities in the context of social, cultural, and economic change in the capital. They move chronologically, discussing the rise of the West End as a center of fashionable life; the era of imperial fashion when London dominated the world politically and economically; the increasing democratization of fashionable dress; the challenges and conflicts of modernity; the school of couturiers that emerged midcentury; and the rise of the independent fashion designer and small boutiques. Finally they describe the London punks who, toward the end of the twentieth century, theatricalized the street in a mood of social and sartorial dissent and paved the way for postmodern styles.
Lavishly illustrated, the book draws on photographs of the Museum of London’s remarkable collection of objects and images, and material from the London Institute.

The Curious Incident of the Beagle in the Nighttime.......2004-07-06
There can't be too many people who haven't heard of Charlie Brown and his crazy beagle, Snoopy. This compilation, first published in 1999, features the duo and the rest of the Peanuts gang - including Charlie's little sister, Sally, hard-hearted Lucy, Linus and his security blanket, Peppermint Patti and the 'excessively weird' Marcie.
The main highlights of this book, for me, were the sections that focus on Snoopy. A very imaginative dog, his escapades as a GI, a World War One flying ace and a member of the French Foreign Legion are touched on. His adventures see him join Charlie on a trip to summer camp, and he attempts - several times - to write that elusive best selling novel. Snoopy's sporting abilities are also in evidence, as a golfer and as the shortstop on Charlie Brown's baseball team - which, admittedly, seems to be on a never-ending losing streak. Snoopy's trusty sidekick, Woodstock, also appears. A little of Woodstock's ancestry is revealed when the duo discover a cage that Woodstock's grandfather had briefly lived in. Snoopy also comes down with pneumonia in this book and has to go to hospital. While a patient, his visitors include his brothers Andy, Spike and Olaf.
For me, Peanuts is the best cartoon strip around - it sets the standard and is guaranteed quality. In fact, the only thing it left me wishing for is more !
The world is better with Charles Schulz.......2000-06-24
The familiar little round-headed Charlie Brown has become a world-wide cultural figure since his creation, as has all of Schulz's other characters. The Peanuts gang not only brings laughs to its readers, but every comic has a deeper profound statement. His comedy more than simple slapstick, Schulz brings to life the pains and joys of childhood; messages of inspiration and hope and illustrated through loveable characters like Snoopy and Linus. Charlie Brown (based on Schulz's own childhood) is a perfect demonstration that no matter how many times things mess up, you should always try to kick that football or write that letter to the little red-haired girl.
The World is Full of Mondays is well-arranged, with enough comic strips to keep you laughing (with sometimes a tear or two in between) through many readings. With a tasteful mixture of color and black-and-white comics, along with sections arranged by subject, this is a beautiful collection that should be transcended from generation to generation (and not always in order from oldest to youngest.)
Charles Schulz, you have made the world a better place for many people. We will miss you.
The World Is Filled with Mondays...and Baseball!.......2000-05-11
This has Peanuts comic strips from 1994. When I first read this book, I laughed for a long time! It was also my first Peanuts book and now I am hooked!

Great Bag Full Of Peanuts!.......1999-07-04
More Peanuts classics featuring Charlie Brown and the gang. This is a great series because it contains a full year's worth of strips in a single volume. Highly recommended and they should put out more of these books, especially one that cover the years 1955-1970.

Book Description
Over 1,000 films are listed in this visually arresting, full-color celebration of the silver screen. Film personalities, including actors, directors, cinematographers, and animators, write about their favorite films from a variety of angles. Martin Scorsese, Nicole Kidman, and Nick Hornby are among those who weigh in. Writers are matched to suitable (or sometimes surprising) themes and genres within the wider subject of how films can alter the course of a life. Movie stills and posters, trivia, and top-ten lists make this a book that can be dipped into or read from cover to cover. Great screen moments — endings, beginnings, kisses, death scenes — are given special spreads. The eclectic approach speaks to fans of big Hollywood blockbusters and factoid-reciting film geeks alike. Time Out guides have become well-known for their hip, savvy travel coverage, and this wider-ranging pop cultural coverage follows in this tradition.

One of the 20th century's greatest composers, Duke Ellington (1899-1974) led a fascinating life. The first biography to draw on the vast Duke Ellington archives at the Smithsonian Institution, this book recounts the entirety of his remarkable career: his childhood in Washington, D.C. and musical apprenticeship in Harlem; his long engagement at the glamorous, gangster-owned Cotton Club; the challenging years during the Depression; his tours to Europe and into America's deep South, where he helped lower racial barriers; the postwar years when television and bebop threatened to eclipse the big bands; Ellington's own triumphant comeback at the 1956 Newport Jazz Festival; his collaborations with Billy Strayhorn, Johnny Hodges, Ella Fitzgerald, and John Coltrane, among others; and of course, the music itself, five decades of hits and masterpieces that constantly broke new ground.
John Edward Hasse serves as Curator of American Music at the Smithsonian Institution, curator of its traveling exhibition Beyond Category, and producer and annotator of the boxed set of recordings by the same name.
Book Description
One of the twentieth century's greatest composers, Duke Ellington (1899-1974) led a fascinating life. Beyond Category, the first biography to draw on the vast Duke Ellington archives at the Smithsonian Institution, recounts his remarkable career: his childhood in Washington, D.C., and his musical apprenticeship in Harlem; his long engagement at the Cotton Club; the challenging years of the depression; his tours to Europe and into America's deep South, where he helped lower racial barriers; the postwar years when television and bebop threatened to eclipse the big bands; Ellington's own triumphant comeback at the 1956 Newport Jazz Festival; his collaborations with Billy Strayhorn, Johnny Hodges, and Ella Fitzgerald; as well as five decades of hits and masterpieces that constantly broke new ground. The art of Duke Ellington was a musical expression of the African-American experience, in all its pain, pride, and glory. He composed his music as he composed his life-with flair, passion, and individuality-and no book reveals the man and his artistic evolution more brilliantly than Beyond Category.

Not Merely A Genius Of Jazz...But Rather A Musical Genius!!!.......2005-06-02
His music has resonated all around us for nearly a century. We almost unconsciously react to the melodic rhythms of his brilliant compositions as we watch television or listen to the radio. Often the arrangements are backdrops to our daily lives...soothing our mood or stimulating us to tap our feet or simply sway to its almost spiritual cadences. Such is the music of the Great Duke Ellington. In "Beyond Category" we find an outstanding biography of arguably the greatest composer the world has ever known. From his early days as an aspiring composer/bandleader in Washington, D.C.; through his New York days at the Cotton Club; and onto his unprecedented tours of Europe, Africa and the Far East, this book takes you on a delightful journey into the creative mindset and personality genius of Ellington. Unlike many writings of this nature, Hasse manages to avoid sentimental veneration in conveying many of Ellington's talents in regards to people, business dealings, and his relationship with women. The book is a well-written, enjoyable composition that draws the reader into Ellington's world. Additionally, the author grants appropriate respect to the musicians, artists and businessmen who aided Ellington throughout his career, thus balancing the text superbly. I highly recommend "Beyond Category", not only for the Ellington fan or even a Jazz fan, but for anyone interested in the life and times of a musical genius and an icon of American history.
Top Ellington biography of the 3 I've read so far.......2004-05-29
Beyond Category is the best introduction to Duke Ellington's life and music. It was created to coincide with a Smithsonian exhibit and it offers a quality professional biography of Ellington's life and times. The author considers Ellington's life a series of problems to solve for his mind. Some of these problems are how to learn piano, how to start a band, how to compose with a partner, how to react to the recording band, how to deal with the loss of key soloists, how to compose larger works and ends up hitting many of the high points of Ellington's life and works.
Most of the new research at the time came from Mercer Ellington's enormous donation of his warehouse of materials for the Duke Ellington collectionl. Yet as a book intended for a popular audience, the musical content of this trove was not really fully dealt with. Mercer's collection comes through in the fabulous photographs that are interspersed throughout the book. It may have been better to have all the photographs grouped in several sections as not everyone will have time to read the entire book I suppose.
One very helpful aspect to the book was that at the end of each chapter there was a guide to key recordings of Ellington's life. This type of material is very helpful to those new to Ellington's life.
I found the prose to be clear and adequate although not as lively as some of the other excellent jazz biographies I've read such as Chambers' Milestones.
This book gets a 4.5 star rating for anyone new to Ellington. It's accessible, readable, and gives you several ideas to approach the true gold mine of Ellington's music.
For jazz researchers and scholars, there's still room for a knockout biography of Ellington that adds the information from the Smithsonian collection to wide ranging interviews and even better prose. Researchers will want to read this, but I'm not sure how much of this material is groundbreaking.
4.5 stars for neophytes
3.5 stars for Ellington scholars

Better late than never.......2003-11-08
No sentimentality here. Just warm, rich story telling of a great man. I'm actually embarrassed to say that after lifetime of jazz I just dicovered The Duke. This is a very well written and balanced portrayal of a man,his music and his times. If there's more to say I don't want to read it; it's time to listen.
excellently researched book.......2000-04-12
As an old time lover of Jazz, but rather new to really examining the lives behind its great musicians, and particularly Duke Ellington, I started out with "Duke Ellington: A Spiritual Biography" by Janna Tull Steed (great book (and just 192 pages) for anyone new to the Duke & jazz). It was Steed's book that really built the interest to explore Ellington in more depth and, Hasse's book is just what I was looking for. It is a hefty book but it is absolutely and completely accessible, just what is required to approach this great man of Jazz.
A compeling portrait of one of America's greatest composers.......1999-04-08
This is a thoroughly enjoyable story of the life and times of one of America's greatest and most prolific composer/musicians. It characterises the "Duke" as a caring, people loving person with close family ties, and a quest for excellence against all odds. The Forward by Wynton Marsalis is clear and insightful. The author has accomplished an easy to follow sequence of events enhanced by photos and drawings. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in the genre.

Book Description
Much of contemporary philosophy, political theory, and social thought has been shaped directly or indirectly by Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel, though there is considerable disagreement about how his work should be understood. He has been described both as a metaphysician and characterized as an ironic narrator who anticipated the character of philosophy after metaphysics. His position is equally ambiguous with regard to his political thought. He has been construed both as an enemy of the liberal state and as a friend of freedom.
This volume's revisionist reassessment, building on the scholarship of Klaus Hartmann, explores these ambiguities in favor of a non-metaphysical reading of Hegel's arguments. It also shows how the foundations of his political thought support a liberal democratic state. This reappraisal of Hegel's arguments resituates him as a philosopher who anticipates the difficulties of post-modernity and offers a basis for reassessing ontology, aesthetics, and revolution. Philosophers and those doing work in political theory will find this volume of great interest.

By 2010, 30 percent of the U.S. population will be over age 50. Even today, the over-50 segment has $750 billion in spending power and controls a majority of the nation's assets. The generation's front-runners are Leading-Edge Baby Boomers, founders of modern youth culture and then yuppie materialism. This essential marketing guide presents stimulating chapters that will show you:
-- Critical "bipolar metavalues" that influence the buying behavior of Leading-Edge Baby Boomers.
-- Select the right advertising media to achieve your marketing goals
-- LOHAS: a new lifestyle segment that's changing everything
-- How to plan and organize "bandwagon" Boomer events and promotions
-- Exceptional opportunities for reaching Boomers through the Internet.
Customer Reviews:
When the .......2007-03-27
By now most of us are well-versed in the statistical relevance of the baby boomer generation--including its size, wealth, and extraordinary influence on world events. In response, there have been no shortage of books studying every aspect of baby boomers and how to optimally market to them. However, most of these books fall short on explaining the values that define the boomer generation and how they distinguish them from other generations.
While Green's book is perhaps best used by the relatively small group of individuals who work in marketing departments, it is relevant to individuals considering setting out in new careers. A big part of launching a new business or transitioning careers is picking the right industry to move into ("all boats rise in a rising tide"). Even for those not in marketing nor contemplating a career change will find Green's book interesting if nothing else other than to better understand the world around us.
Of course the danger in talking about an entire generation is the necessary stereotyping that comes from aggregating otherwise individuals. Green has split baby boomers into two roughly equal groups, those born 1946 to 1955 (the "Leading-Edge Boomers") and those born 1956-1964 (the "Late Boomers"). Green focuses on the Leading-Edge Boomers but much is learned about both groups.
The book jacket promises to deliver:
"...all of the insights and strategies you need to achieve extraordinary business success as you determine what uniquely motivates Boomers and how to communicate with them in meaningful and mutually beneficial ways."
...and the book largely delivers on that promise. Green's anecdotes serve to support the points he makings and not as the foundation of them.
On a more personal note, I was interested in applying the book to LifeTwo and specifically in the way that we address the Leading-Edge Baby Boomer market. The section of "Baby Boomers at Midlife" seemed written for us. One of the attributes of midlife is an evaluation of one's life so far.
"Careers in crisis, mid-life economic shortcomings, unsatisfying marriages, waning physical prowess, and widespread boredom can foster musing daydreams about Vietnam protest marches, backpacking sojourns to Europe, bare-butt swimming parties, LSD mind trips, first love affairs, unfettered road trips, and Woodstock."
In other words, when hitting the midpoint of life, it's normal to reminisce. But when you were a member of the Sixties Generation, you might find yourselves remembering the idolized expectations that there held at that time for for a vastly improved world. Sadly and expectedly, most people's lives (not to mention society as a whole) ended up far short of the dreams of the Age of Aquarius. Adding political alienation and disenchantment to an otherwise troubling midlife transition and the result can easily be "restless stirring, the renaissance of experimentation, value conflicts, erratic behavior, role playing, depressive moods, grief reactions, and profound anxiety states."
That is not to say that the process is all negative. A reawakening (a "coming of age") can be a "harbinger of a more satisfying future." In Green's words:
Once again, it means honoring the nobler ideals of world peace, economic equality, egalitarian civil rights, human potential, and spiritual enlightenment. It means sharing a new, perhaps revitalized generational zeitgeist--that tenacious obsession with the perfectibility of the human condition. The stuff of truth."
[...].
Strategic and tactical insights from a practitioner.......2006-07-18
I am a student of nonfiction books about baby boomers. Although I'm a member of so-called Generation X, my job demands that I stay on top of evolving thought leadership about boomers. Further, my two older siblings are boomers. In reviewing the reviews for boomer-focused books on Amazon, I've noticed something. The one-star critics of these books tend to be glib, lack depth in their analyses, and dismiss the books, not so much because of content, but because the books are usually sympathetic to the generation or perhaps more liberal ideologies. Let's face it: some people are furious at boomers. Their anger shows. To the contrary, Green's book is one of the best I've read on marketing to this generation, and one of my brothers -- also in marketing -- agrees. It's not just because Green offers a wealth of strategic and tactical insights, especially for those new to this market, but also because he adds texture with actual case studies and historical anecdotes. It's clear that this marketer and author knows what he's writing about as a practitioner, not just a pundit or academic. He informs and educates, but yet he tells stories that illuminate. Further, I also read his first edition, and he was ahead of the explosion of interest around boomers by at least two or three years -- light years in the marketing world.
A Sociological and Business Breakthrough.......2006-07-18
This author has truly captured the essence of the values that distinguish boomers from other generations. What sets this book apart -- and makes it an important choice for companies and advertising agencies interested in the boomer market -- is Green's ability to articulate how boomer values and shared life experiences can be addressed through powerful cohort marketing communication campaigns. The book has several interesting hallmarks, including concise chapters that deal thematically with boomer values, case studies that reveal how these insights can be developed into effective marketing campaigns and a short story that adds artistic and evocative texture to the left-brain thinking driving most marketing campaigns. Because of his stanch defense of boomers, a generation popularly criticized in the media, the author will attract some critics who themselves harbor deep prejudices against boomers. This has been aptly demonstrated by one ascerbic review posted recently, lacking in depth or specificity. It's about time that someone stepped forward with a strident voice in defense of boomers, and particularly their economic and business importance.
Covers all of the insights and strategies necessary .......2005-02-07
The Baby Boom generation is characterized by its clear dominance of the popular culture of yuppie consumerism. Now members of that influential generation are entering their fifties with more disposable income than any previous generation. This new and expanded second edition of Marketing To Leading-Edge Baby Boomers: Perceptions, Principles, Practices, Predictions by marketing creative director, strategist, and copywriter Brent Green covers all of the insights and strategies necessary to successfully sell products and services to this now aging population. Readers will come to understand critical "bipolar metavalues" that influence Boomer buying decisions; learn how to select the right advertising media to achieve marketing goals; realize why and how mature audiences receive advertising messages differently; create advertising and marketing programs that transform a brand into a Boomer favorite; receive instruction on just how to plan and organizing "bandwagon" Boomer events and promotions, explore the opportunities for reaching Boomers through the Internet, and so much more. If you are marketing a product or service to the Baby Boom generation, then you need to give a careful and reflective reading to what Brent Green has to say about selling to the Boomers in today's highly competitive and frequently volatile marketplace.
If Your Competition Reads This and You Don't..........2005-01-28
...you'll never know what hit you.
Reaching Boomers looks easy, but it's not. Marketing executives, both young and experienced, make too many mistakes when trying to sell to Baby Boomers. Do it wrong, and this cash-rich market will totally ignore what you have to say.
In this book, Brent Green shows you how to get their attention and make them reach for their wallets.
