If You Can Find It, GRAB IT.......2005-02-24
As an illustrator, I can't even begin to properly pay homage to one of my great heros, John Held, Jr. His was some of the most beautiful, harmonious work of a true golden age of illustration - the 1920's wouldn't have been quite so giddy were it not for him. He enhanced the age, and continues to celebrate it, years after his death.
From sheiks, flappers, collegiates and flivvers to breathtaking watercolors of the Manhattan skyline, this wonderful volume has it all - full-page prints of Held, Jr.'s work, brilliantly loyal to the original colors and gradations, shine in full glory. From the 1890's through the early 1940's, a wide range of his styles and capabilities are documented. Woodcuts are in plentiful supply, as well - it's just all here, plain and simple.
As well, Held, Jr.'s life story is briefly told, along with a charming introduction by Marc Connelly. The latter allows the reader some humorous insight to Held, Jr.'s character - the two, along with several other aspiring artists and writers, shared what amounted to a flophouse flat, and the tales of their efforts toward success are amusing to say the least.
For the most part, this book is a visual journey, which makes it so wonderful. A great companion would be Shelley Armitage's biography - her book is far more informative, forgoing extensive illustration in favor of telling the artist's life story. But if you're looking to just sit back and be enthralled by Held, Jr.'s work, this book is the way to go. Now that I finally have a copy, you can bet that I'll never, ever part with it.

Book Description
By now, we're all familiar with Cathy's battles among the four basic guilt groups-food, Mom, love, and career. Women can identify with Cathy Guisewite's hilarious portrayal of the universal struggles of modern femininity. A confirmed chocoholic, Cathy often consoles herself with one more trip to the fridge, then pays for it with frightening excursions in department store dressing rooms. Mom pushes Cathy to find the man who will give her grandchildren. As for her career, Cathy struggles to be a superstar, even though her desk looks like a disaster area.In fact, Cathy's all-too-recognizable life is what endears her to devoted readers. Her countless fans look on their cartoon heroine as a best friend, someone who really knows the trials and tribulations of the working single woman. From Internet dating to Christmas catalog fiascoes, from winter-flu one-upmanship at the office to kitchen technique discussions with Mom, Cathy puts her finger on the kinds of situations that women face in their real lives on a daily basis. In this latest Cathy collection, I'd Scream Except I Look So Fabulous, our favorite cartoon character once again shows why her popularity soars. Who can't relate to the discomfort fashion sometimes dictates in order to be trendy' Even after more than two decades in syndication, Cathy remains one of the most popular cartoon strips of all times-as evidenced in this new collection, destined to be another best-seller.
Customer Reviews:
Guisewite at her best.......2005-03-03
I'm an avid Cathy fan and this is Guisewite at her best. She keeps to her trademark humor and perceptiveness while using very "everyday" situations. To those who complain that the cartoon plays upon stereotypical female concerns such as shopping and food, I counter that these themes make the humor relatable to many women, while providing a backdrop to the cartoonist's witty and incisive social commentary.
This particular collection plays upon an unexpected twist in the Cathy-Irving saga. After a lapse of three years, Irving turns up in a very unexpected way in Cathy's life - her professional life! - as a downsizing consultant. Guisewite very cleverly develops various angles of this theme, such as the often seen discrepancy between a person's competent "together" professional demeanor versus the more lackadaisical, sometimes inept, personal one. The irony is heightened for instance when Cathy's boss introduces Irving as being hired to do some housecleaning (as he euphemistically calls it) for the company and Cathy remembers that he does not even pick up his towels off the floor!
Of course Guisewite weaves in her usual themes into the plot. The title itself stems from a realization that her cartoon protagonist looks fabulous with the aid of the usual flesh constricting sartorial arsenal of corsets, tight hose and stillettos, etc. It speaks to the inventiveness and imagination of Guisewite that she can bring up many fresh and astute takes on these seemingly mundane aspects of the female experience.
Cathy--still controversial!.......2004-08-07
Even in 2004, the 1999 Cathy looks as controversial as ever. No wonder so many hate her and so many love her. Her creator, Cathy Guisewite, marches in and takes no prisoners in the battle of the sexes and even more importantly, in the Ingmar-Bergman like drama of love and hate that exists between mother and daughter. Poor Cathy, we always think, when she is forced to listen to more abuse from her mother, and yet, she seems to enjoy it in a way, perhaps she really wants to have children herself.
The way she tries to fit into unsuitable clothes was obviously borrowed for another 90s sensation, the over-the-hill scenesters of ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS, and this collection in turn tips the hat right back by alluding to the UK-made TV sitcom in its title. Guisewite has made a million variations on a very limited palette of character types and her drawing isn't the greatest in the world, but she's got angst going for her and an international fan base as well.
THIS is the best Cathy book yet........2004-05-08
I loved the story line when Irving downsized Cathy out of "Product Tester's Inc." That is every woman's worst nightmare.. well that and bathing suit season, but that's in here too! I believe Cathy's gotten better with age, and with her upcoming marriage to Irving, will continue to do so.
Cathy Guisewite once again reassures women of America.......2001-05-06
"I'd Scream Except I Look So Fabulous: A Cathy Collection by Cathy Guiswite" once again reassures the women of America (among many countries) that they are normal. They are not the only ones to fret over what they will wear, how they look in bathing suits, and why their sizes seem to get bigger and bigger as the trendy sizes are smaller and smaller. Through Cathy, people can realize that they are not strange to care about how they look, to be jealous of their dog because they are pampered more by their parents then they were, and that it is normal to hate bathing suits (sort of). Cathy has been charming the world for over two decades, and hopefully will go on doing so for a long time.
Cathy Again!.......2000-02-24
Another great Cathy book as Guisewaite deals with downsizing, home businesses, and of course, relationships; the conflicts and triumphs that are all part of being female in America! Cathy reassures us that we're not the only one who thinks there's something slightly ridiculous about being a new millennium kind of woman!

Pretty funny but..........2004-09-24
I am a Jew-by-Choice (by-marriage) I found this book Hilarious, but my husband who is "ethnically" jewish found it bordering on racial slurs. Perhaps he hit too close to home... When he when to a cousin's bar mitzvah last week, he wore his tallit like a scarf! He didn't know how to put on one even though our reform rabbi wears one to every service! So, I get my loving nickname back: shiksa because I actually laughed at this book! OY! Like many jews he really doesn't know what the Yiddish word shiksa translates as...
Let's convert to this religion :).......2002-07-06
This book is one of the funniest books I have read. I have tested this book on both Jews and non Jews, and they all laughed themselves to a near death experience ...
I have got so much laughters out of it, I'm considering conversion :)
Great, very funny.......2002-03-30
This book has everything an extremely reformed jew needs to be. It is extremely funny and even if your not a reformed jew or not a jew at all, you'll laugh untill you can't laugh anymore. I recomend this book to everyone
Hilarious.......1999-02-02
My wife and I laughed ourselves silly. The fact that we are of the persuasion of the the book's title probably has a little to do with this, but anyone would enjoy this book. Even (especially) if you happen to already be a reform Jew, don't pass this little book up.
This book is like an old friend........1998-11-27
This book is like an old friend. I bought it last year during the holiday season to give to friends and it was a success so I am doing it again. It;s a great gift. Don't forget to read it yoursefl.

Take it all with a grain of salt..........2007-06-19
I confess...I am a Joan Crawford fan. Although she was more style than substance in most of her movies, she was the epitome of a movie star, and I think she played that part brilliantly. And no one could have done "Mildred Pierce" or the trashy Crystal Allen of "The Women" more justice than Joan.
I read "Mommie Dearest" many years ago, though, before I ever became a Crawford fan. And even then, I thought that although Joan certainly didn't come off well, neither did Christina. She comes off as not only spoiled and whiny, but also as quite the little instigator.
Do I believe that she was abused by Joan? Unfortunately, yes I do. I think that some of that is due to the way that Joan herself was raised, but we also should remember the old "Spare the rod, spoil the child" school of thought that was so prevalent then...and even years later, when my parents were raising me.
Yes, I believe that Christina was beaten, that she was pulled from her privileged boarding school and put into a parochial one (poor baby), maybe even that Joan choked her in front of the secretary. I also believe that Christina was mouthy, snotty, and loved to push her mother's buttons.
Hell, my own parents used to whip me and my brothers with belts and boards when we did something wrong. Our mother once got so angry with us that we were locked into our rooms without food for the day, so that Dad could beat us when he came home. (Probably a good thing...I think she'd have beaten us senseless, she was so angry.) But I can't imagine writing their story, even if they were famous. You grow up, realize that your parents were imperfect human beings, and you get on with your lives.
And therein lies Christina's fault, in my opinion. She can't just grow up and move along, she has to continue beating her mother's memory and legacy into the ground. It's been 30 years, it's time to let it go.
Only a cow would write this.......2007-03-22
What dispicable human being would write such a book after someone took her in and gave her a pretty good childhood compared to other children I know. Christina Crawford, according to many historians, was a little brat who expected to be treat royally just because she had been adopted by a film star. However, Joan herself was brought up to earn her place in the world and worked hard to get there. She had no intention of letting her children grow up without learning these good rules.
If you don't believe me what a horrid human being Christina Crawford is, then please view the Turner Classics documentary on Joan Crawford (with Angeica Houston as narrator). In every segment where Christina talks, she comes across so bitter ... she has not one nice word to say about her mother, just criticisms. After all these years, Christina is still bitter! And you know why? Simply because she was jealous of all the people out there who loved Joan Crawford for the wonderful films she gave us.
Only the most rotten of children would write a book about their parent. Why would Christina want to destroy her mother's image. Only a nasty unhappy soul would do that. Christina should have been left in the orphanage.
Joan was a maginficent actress, who deserved alot better than this treatment after her death! Shame on Christina.
More spotlight on the REAL disease - BPD.......2007-01-31
Joan Crawford had Borderline Personality Disorder. Plain and simple. Christina shared with the world her story. As the child of a Borderline mother myself, I can totally relate to many of the stories, although my own mother was not as violent as Joan Crawford. It took great courage for Christina to write this book, and I'm sure it went a long way toward Christina being able to heal her own psyche. Just because her sisters want to deny what happened in the Crawford home doesn't mean it didn't happen. Families with personality disorders in them tend to fabricate a truth, an image, that's not quite real, whether they're rich or poor, and because of Joan Crawford's status, it is reasonable that even after her death, some of her family are still enmeshed enough to "protect" her.
A sad, but very courageous tale.
Want to know if it's worth buying?.......2007-01-04
I bought this book because I had 6 weeks holidays and nothing to read. I did enjoy reading it - it was well written.
However, if you're looking to be shocked you may be disappointed.
The accounts of abuse were not that bad - in my opinion - especially for the day. Christina was obviously not afraid of her mother - her many tantrums which she admits to are testament to this fact. All pervading fear is the hallmark of serious child abuse.
Christina clearly did not understand her mother and had little respect for her, and appeared not to attempt to either. I think this is clear by her surprise at being written out of the will - and could perhaps even be the cause of it.
I'm not on either side here - but raising kids is very hard work and I can see that Christina did not lack for attention and care, this is a testament to her mother. The fact that the younger 2 children have never spoken of abuse is a testament to perhaps Joan's growth as a parent.
It's worth a look if you enjoy human drama.
Bravery and Courage.......2006-11-01
It takes bravery and courage to stand up to childhood memories of abuse. We did not need eyewitnesses to come forward after the first edition was published: we believed Christina. If Christina has made a living from her story, all the better. At least, with all the hatred and abuse poured out upon her, her mother did provide for her financially through this story. (she was cut out of the will).
any adult who was acutely abused as a child can relate to Christina's courage. Bravo! She is a survivor and if her book gives just ONE person the courage to walk away from abuse and seek treatment, then her book is invaluable.
Customer Reviews:
Complete Trash!!!.......2007-08-16
I should have never wasted time reading this book but my curiosity got the best of me. What a whiner, Christina Crawford takes on the note of a child complaining endlessly about her mean mommy. If you have any brains and the slightest knowledge of basic psychology you can easily read between the lines and see the book for what it is. Christina and her brother Christopher are both angry they didn't get spoiled silly and by their own admissions are hateful of a mother who had money and fame and refused to just shower her children with it. Joan Crawford may have gone slightly over the edge but she was obviously try to teach all of her children humility, the value of listening to their elders, and earning and appreciating things. The tactics used by Joan Crawford were very common in those days ie. going to bed with no dinner, spankings, taking away of precious toys. With four children in the same house with the same mother and two turning out bitter and hateful at mommy and the other two turning out still defending her and calling BS on this book, you see the credibility of this story going down even further. For God sake Christina, you were not trying to educate the world on child abuse you were trying to make a buck off of your mother! Christina Crawford should learn about real child abuse with such books as Dave Pelzer Set of 3 Titles - A Child Called It - The Lost Boy - A Man Named Dave and leave the book writing to others. Don't make the same mistake and read this waste of paper and ink.

Survivor book.......2007-03-08
Thanks for sending the book so quickly. Great Service. Thanks again!!
Survivor indeed.......2005-06-28
Another eye-opening and heartbreaking expose of the REAL Joan Crawford and the ongoing legacy of pain she bequeathed to her children. What a relief and a blessing to see that Christina has managed to come to terms with her scars and find real happiness. She deserves it.
Negative reviews of Ms. Crawford's books expose another truth: People who have never been abused just don't get it. They preach "just move on" and "how relevant is that really, when it happened years ago?" "don't live in the past" "determine to put it out of your mind and don't let it control your life" and probably the worst of all - "Just don't dwell on it." If it were that easy to heal, people wouldn't need therapists and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder wouldn't exist at all. Abuse leaves scars that never really heal, damages and sometimes even destroys a person's ability to trust or establish true relationships. PTSD and trauma make it difficult to hold jobs or just get a good night's sleep. People who endure child abuse ARE survivors, because their childhoods are a continual war zone.
Christina also explodes the sacred cow of adoption: that all adoptive parents are warm, wonderful people people who take in unwanted children unselfishly and solely out of the goodness of their hearts, and would never dream of abusing them. I read "Mommie Dearest" back in 1981 and it was the first time I had ever heard of another adopted child being abused. Thank you, Ms. Crawford, for a careful expose of the terrible and lingering effects of abuse.
Mediocre.......2005-06-06
"Mommie Dearest" was great because of the spectacular events, places and people. I hate to admit it, but I guess a big part of the appeal was that it involved a very famous, wealthy movie star, even though I am interested in the subject of child abuse. So anyway, I wanted to read what happened after the end of "Mommie Dearest." I basically found out, but I could've used some more info about the impact of the book on the world and people's reactions. I would've liked more info about what old time Hollywood people remembered about Joan. What I disliked about this book was all the space dedicated to Christina's recovery from stroke and all the metaphysical newage talk. I skipped and skimmed over most of that. I think Christina is actually a rather poor writer, who is boring when she doesn't talk about Joan Crawford and related subjects. Her writing is self-indulgent and melodramatic. But of course, someone who was as abused as her is entitled to have deeply disturbed feelings. I was shocked that Christina's husband David had squandered her hard-earned money and left her $250,000 in debt. She keeps being victimized by people over and over again. But maybe life is about surviving despite repeated victimization. Maybe that's a normal part of life. It's that sort of thing that makes some people like Joan Crawford become evil predators. And some people choose not to become evil despite all the hardships and abuse, the extreme violation of trust. Some people choose not to add more evil to the world. As for the movie not turning out the way Christina wanted, I think a faithful movie based on Christina's book would be more suited towards PBS than Hollywood. It would be too intellectual and educational for Hollywood. Hollywood is about cheap entertainment and cheap thrills, because it's aimed at the masses, and the masses are rather shallow and stupid.
Want more!.......2003-04-04
I got my copy at a used bookstore and it was full of underlines and personal notes from the nut who had it before me. I'll have to get a clean copy. Christina's is an exciting tale. I will never get bored of listening to anything she has to say. "Survivor" talks mostly about her life in the 1980s- her marraige, stroke, recovery, and how she published her book. It had new pictures not published in "Mommie Dearest".
I think it's insulting that people say she wrote her books as revenge for being disinherited, but even if that is true, GOOD! For someone who was so badly treated, I say more power to you.
I wonder if Christina still has all those letters Joan wrote to her while she was in boarding school? Imagine if she put just one of those up on e-bay!
It's too bad the people who discredit Christina are blinded by the fact that they don't want to believe their favorite movie star would do such a thing, or believe it's OK because she's a star. That's the whole point of her books.
Mommie Dearest Sequel.......1999-06-20
I found this book after researching the beginnings and the ending of Mommie Dearest. I was lucky enough to find a sequel to the ultimate Hollywood biography of the most notorious stars of Hollywoodland. This was a good read, the book starts off where Mommie Dearest left off...at the reading of the will. It seems Christina's troubles all though life was only the beginning. She received a backlash of support and criticism right after the publishing. Survivor accounts for the talk shows, the play in London, and goes into the depths of the making of the film "Mommie Dearest". Christina also battles with Paramount on the screenplay, ultimately losing to the high-powered executives. Then there is a whole chapter devoted to Christina when she is stricken with a stroke, and eventual recovery. This book ends in 1988 when after a failed marriage, stroke and trips to Sedona, Arizona,Christina finally finds her way out of a place she calls "Lost".

I enjoyed reading this book, and caught myself chuckling all the way through. Even though it's written with women in mind, it gives excellent advice for men as well as women and gives examples for why they advise it. I'd suggest it highly for men, women or teenagers who are interested in meeting people online. Great advice and with the space where you can write in your own information, it's easy to apply. I especially enjoyed the analyzing sample letters section.Too Cute!

Wired Not Weird: A Woman's Guide To Dating Online begins with a ominous disclaimer: the reader must assume all responsibility for personal decisions or actions, regardless of whether they are influenced by reading this book. It is an unfortunate consequence of our unpredictable, sometimes dangerous, and unquestionably litigious society that such a warning must be so boldly declared, but the disclaimer also doubles as sound advice for life in general. Wired Not Weird dares to tackle a subject that is at best made light of in vapid comedy movies, at worst demonized with horror stories: online dating. Collaboratively written by Christy Clement and Kay McLean as a guide specifically for women, Wired Not Weird incorporates personal anecdotes, a hefty dose of common sense, and simple, easy-to-understand advice and strategies about what to expect, what to stay away from, and what to say or not say during the first meeting in person. Wired Not Weird's suggestions are also directly relevant to placing personal ads in the newspapers, which is basically the low-tech local equivalent of using the Internet to look for a date. Wired Not Weird is highly entertaining, with plenty of appraising observations to carefully consider -- even if you're not interested in using the Internet to find love.
Incredibly Heplful Information!.......2001-08-21
Wired Not Weird is very well written; clear, concise, organized. I found it easy to read, understand and apply. This book gave me the courage to venture onto the web in search of that special someone! So far I've corresponded with several intriguing men and have actually met and dated someone very special! I'll be sending copies to all my single friends for Christmas this year!

Customer Reviews:
Misleading at best and in dire need of a new titled.......2007-08-23
This should be titled, How to Make Money Producing Free Junk Magazines. Most of the folks I know in the publishing industry would love to see a down to basics intro to publishing, ie, the printing lingo, developing relationships with authors, editing tips, detailed layout advice, etc. This book is about producing, not publishing. Moving units of advertising, not creating something worthwhile to read or engage the public. This is a get-rich-quick book that belongs in the business section and has not place near publishing/literature reference.
Good, but...........2007-03-20
This book has a lot of great information in it and will be useful for anyone who wants to start publishing.
HOWEVER, this book is by far the most poorly edited book I have ever read. Punctuation mistakes ABOUND and it is obvious that standards were not very high for publication of this book.
Buy it for the education and look at it as what NOT to do when publishing a book or magazine.
Tons of Great Information.......2007-03-09
This is a great asset if you are thinking about publishing your own magazine. There is a wealth of information for the publishing novice. A little advice - buy this book some time before you plan to publish your magazine so that you can digest the information.
Covers circulation, readership, proposal writing, optional publication formats, niche markets and more........2006-10-07
If you're thinking of starting a home-based publishing business, you can't be without Publish Your Own Magazine, Guidebook or Weekly Newspaper: it tells how to not just publish a winning title, but how to make it profitable - with no money up front. All kinds of successful periodicals and what made them tops are reviewed in a title which covers circulation, readership, proposal writing, optional publication formats, niche markets and more.
Bang for your Buck.......2006-03-02
Of the many books that I have purchased on self-publishing, this is one of the better ones. Even though I myself was mostly interested in book publishing rather than mangazines or guidebooks, this book still served me well. It gave a lot of useful tips and pointers as well as information I never thought about. I checked the book out of the library initially, but I want my own copy.
This book gives you step by step details on how to enter the publishing field on a tight budget. It gives you an abundance of resources. Some of those include:
* Starting out with little cash (and how he did it)
* Trade secrets necessary to pick winning publications
* How to hire the people you need (at a price you can afford)
* How to save money on printing
* Reproducible Business Forms
This is a great book to include in your self-publishing library. It does cover alot of areas, but I don't usually complain when someone gives me more bang for my buck.
