Softcover Norton, W. W. & Company, Inc. January 2003
Book Description
W. W. Norton & Company is proud to present the Sixth Edition of The Norton Sampler. As a rhetorically arranged collection of short essays for composition, our Sampler echoes the cloth samplers once done in colonial America, presenting the basic patterns of writing for students to practice just as schoolchildren once practiced their stitches and ABCs on needlework samplers. This new edition shows students that description, narration, and the other patterns of exposition are not just abstract concepts used in composition classrooms but are in fact the way we thinkand write. The Norton Sampler contains 63 carefully chosen readingsclassics as well as more recent pieces, essays along with a few real-world textsall demonstrating how writers use the modes of discourse for many varied purposes.

School Book.......2002-04-07
A collection of essays assembled by type and style of writing.
The book instruvts how to write common essay types by presenting the reader with a few examples of each kind. The cool part is the commentary by the authors of some of the essays as to what they were thinking when they wrote them and how they went about the writing process.
Good use for an Intro to Writing college level class.
The essay is alive and well written.......2001-04-22
Norton Readers have long been a staple of university literature and composition courses, which is no doubt the original purpose of this volume (hence the extended title, "Short Essays for Composition"). If you don't let this deter you, you will be rewarded with a collection of some of the best of American essays with a plus. This is not only a collection of well written essays spanning early and modern nonfiction, but you have the bonus of modern prose stylists such as Annie Dillard and Barry Lopez talking about the pieces that are included: how they get ideas, how they craft their work, why they write in nonfiction. A satisfying and interesting collection, well worth reading and passing along to others. Great for teachers and students interested in learning about nonfiction as well, as nonfiction as a genre is the organizing schema of this volume.

Alita's mastery of the lethal Panzer Kunst technique may not help her in volume 2 of this popular series. Her worst enemy may be herself.
Customer Reviews:
Another Great Book By Kishiro.......2006-07-14
Tears Of An Angel shows another side of Alita that you don't get to see in the first graphic novel. The cyborg "Battle Angel" is in love. However, the person she's in love with lives a dangerous life. The ending may or may not suprise you. It's basically a sad love story. Tears Of An Angel is a great and I hope you enjoy it.
FOR LOVE.......2004-09-12
In this second poignant volume of Battle Angel Alita, Alita falls in love with a young street urchin named Hugo. Hugo's dream is to make enough money to move to Tiphares, the mid-air city where all your dreams can come true. Unknown to Alita, Hugo is making his money by assaulting and stealing body parts from cyborgs, a crime punishable by death. A character from the first volume, Zapan, who was humiliated by Alita, finds out about Alita's feelings for Hugo and begins to conspire a plot that will destroy Alita's heart. Will Alita's next bounty be Hugo?
This manga was fantastic. While I compared Battle Angel Alita to Ghost in the Shell in my review of the first volume, there really isn't a comparison. Alita operates in a more savage world, where laws don't function unless bounty hunters enforce them. It is a place where your fellow man will let you die on the street without lifting a finger. It's such a horrible world that Alita's love stands out in even starker contrast to the evil that surrounds her. Yes, there are scenes of "ultra-violence" but what makes that different from our world? The thing I like about Alita is that there are horrible scenes of graphic violence but there are also scenes of philosophic thought and tenderness. Just like real life. Horrible beauty.
"Tomorrow is useless to a dead man".......2003-01-16
As is true of almost any tale of cyborgs the question of the difference between mechanical consciousness and mechanized humanity is one of the driving forces behind the Battle Angel Alita series. At what point does a combination or brain, spinal column and hardware gain or lose its human nature. In this second stanza in the series, Alita, who was brought back to life in the first volume, re-finds her capacity for love when she meets Hugo, a human boy. Hugo's goal is to make his way from the traps of the Scrapheap to the upper city of Tiphares.
Hugo and Alita seem made for each other, despite the gulf of artificiality that separates them. But Hugo, despite being a complete human is willing to steal the spines out of their original possessors if it brings him closer to the day he can go to Tiphares. This gruesome sideline, and the ghouls he works for gradually eat away at his own humanity until it is clear that he and Alita are really going in opposite directions. Alita will discover her spirit as Hugo gradually loses his soul.
In the meantime, we get a close introduction to the grim nature of life below the city in the sky. Hunter Killers take heads for bounty, people feed on scraps while anything good is sent to Tiphares, and black market ops farm the neighbors for profit. For such as Hugo and Alita there is really no escape, only a dark struggle that can only lead to insanity and death if the dreamer refuses to waken.
Balancing what is almost a post-apocalyptic vision, is Yukito Kishiro's wonderful artwork. He has the same eye for detail that made 'Ghost in the Shell' such a compelling spectacle. The cover art made me wish, for the second time that this series had made it as a feature film or OAV series. If you have been feeling drawn deeper into the world of manga, Alita is a great introduction to Japanese science fiction.
love... wonderful.......2002-09-25
the love story in this book is beautiful, it's wonderful, and i luv it because of this. it's sad, rythmatic, and stays this way through the entire book. it DOES end a little suddenly, tho, but don't they all?
The perfect follow-up to a perfect start in a series!.......2001-10-18
If "Battle Angel Alita" merely introduced us to the amazing cyber world of Yukito Kishiro, then "Battle Angel Alita: Tears of an Angel" builds upon that world and, more than likely, sets in motion the plot.
After her victory over the all-powerful "King of the Maggots" in the first manga volume, Alita now faces her toughest challenge yet: love. Yes, love. While that phrase usually sounds cliched, it applies perfectly in this second manga volume. Alita has it tough to begin with, but when things start to spiral down even further, she must make a choice that could end up destroying her.
Like before, the artwork is beautiful and very detailed. And, like before, "Tears of an Angel" is riddled with violence and blood and gore that sticks it in the section of mature readers who have very strong stomahchs. The story is a superb, miniature masterpiece, and it undoubtedly adds to the internal conflict of Alita trying to find her identity.
This second volume is also featured in the "Gunnm" two episode OVA anime series ("Gunnm" is the original name of the "Battle Angel Alita" series.) Like before, I advise you to read the manga before watching the series, as comparisons will most likely decrease the enjoyment of the manga. But with that said, enjoy "Tears of an Angel". Along with the first volume, the second volume is a superb triumph.

Book Description
Legendary for his clever gibes, bits of wisdom, and ability to laugh at himself, Ronald Reagan endeared himself to the public from the moment he entered the political arena. Few presidents have been so frequently quoted for their one-liners or quick comebacks.
Now, for the first time, The Reagan Wit offers the Reagan humor in hundreds of quotations, both famous and unfamiliar, from every phase of his life, all in his own words. Following Reagan through his youth, college years, military service, acting career, two terms as governor of California, presidency, and post-presidency, The Reagan Wit takes a look at endless priceless moments. Included here are well-known gems like Honey, I forgot to duck (after the assassination attempt on him) as well as lesser-known but equally entertaining statements such as, Im not worried about the deficit: its big enough to take care of itself, capturing the charm that has made Reagan a revered figure. Whether hes playing a mischievous college prank, cajoling his staff members, or jousting with the press, The Reagan Wit gives an all-encompassing and hilarious portrait of Reagans remarkable comic timing.
Customer Reviews:
President Reagan: This man is incredible!.......1999-01-29
President Reagan can come up with something intelligent or funny to say right on the spot. He is an incredible thinker and the best President EVER!!! Though I'm only 17 years old, I know politics, and I know that he is amazing. This is the most complete book of his insightful quotes that I've ever read. His words inspire me to be the best that I can be at everything. I try to live by this quote, "Every new day begins with possibilities. It's up to us to fill it with the things that move us torward progress and peace." His words are amazing!
Book Description
The fall of the Soviet Union had the effect of making Russia even more of a riddle to the foreign observer than it had ever been. This book incorporates into an organic whole the realities of film production, the films themselves, and the socio-political-cultural context, weaving these three threads into a narrative discourse. It aims to integrate the films of the 1990s with life, and to provide a global picture of Russia (with Moscow in the foreground) as the big stage on which the drama unfolded. The author discusses some eighty films made between 1990 and 2000. Many reflect the reality of the present day, either in dramatic or grotesque form. Others reassess the past, placing different spins on various epochs and figures according to the director's ideological orientation. Still others offer escapism into imaginary worlds. The films selected may vary in technical quality and depth of thought; they may be mainstream pictures, or art films. But taken together, they provide an eloquent portrait of Russia, entering the new millennium still in search of its true identity.

Seeking the Truth.......2007-06-26
Edward Winter again presents us with a collection of historical essays, book reviews, forgotten positions, biographical details, quotes, and photographs from his long-running "Chess Notes" column. Winter's goal, as he says elsewhere, is to find out new (or rediscovered) true information about chess history, and to point out false statements and tall tales that are copied from one lousy chess book to another as "history".
The book therefore contains--among much else--many interesting but forgotten games and compositions, biographical material about unjustly forgotten players, and, to this reader the most interesting part of the book, historical investigations into alleged incidents in the lives of famous players. Very often, Winter shows that the sensational tales, both positive and negative, told about many chess masters (either praising their "genius" or blaiming the "crazy" or "immoral" chess master) are based on no facts at all.
This doesn't mean Winter covers up the unpleasant truth. For example, Winter's detailed investigation does not cover up the evidence pointing towards the conclusion that Alekhine did write of his free will the anti-Jewish articles signed by him which he later claimed he was forced to do against his will. But he also allows Alekhine's defenders (including Alekhine himself) in this matter a fair hearing, and wisely comments that the full story will probably have to wait until Alekhine's personal archives are made available to the public. What Winter objects to isn't criticism, even severe criticism, but libel--such as Fine's notorious remark that Alekhine was was "the sadist of the chessboard", for no good reason.
I suspect the book's most often-read section is, alas, the one dealing with book reviews. To many people, reading scathing book reviews that show how bad a book is is a guilty pleasure, and indeed many of Winter's reviews are scathing. Perhaps, in retrospect, Winter might have avoided much of the controversy surrounding KCK, leaving its historical and research value intact, by cutting out the 10% (or so) of KCK devoted to reviews of books and leaving only the purely historical material. Indeed, in the last decade, Winter had practically ceased to write book reviews, presumably deciding such reviews produce far more heat than light.
That said, Winter's scathing criticism is invariably (so far as I can tell) well-justified and always well-documented with numerous examples. The 'Knaves' of the chess world--those who write meretricious "ooks" (Martin Gardner's term to describe worthless potboilers that do not deserve to be called "books")--get what's coming to them from Winter's pen.
The one "criticism" I have of this book is that not all the material in it interested me--but only about 90% of it. This, of course, is not real criticism: tastes vary, and any book of chess history that is 100% interesting to one reader is sure to be of 0% interest to another. Winter, however, has done such a good job of selection that I strongly suspect this book will be 90% interesting to just about *anybody* with interest in chess history; and that is a great achievement indeed.
Brilliant, original, meticulous and hilarious.......2002-01-22
This book is incredibly good. Many chess writers recycle old (and often inaccurate) information from other books, but that is definitely not Winter's way. This book is remarkably accurate and is written in sparkling English. The research and editing are superb. The book contains hundreds of unknown games and positions, thousands of unknown or forgotten facts (many of them historical but also with plenty of topical comment) and all in all it is simply terrific. Winter doesn't pull his punches and can be hilarious when panning sloppy or dishonest hack-writing. Five stars hardly do justice to this wonderful book!
Good book troubled by editing errors.......2001-12-15
This book is best summarized as a series of short articles. Some of the articles are interesting and some are not.
Different aspects of chess are covered: miniatures, trivia, puzzles, theory etc. Most of the individual groupings are fun... and most are well written. However, some are not.
The worst parts of this book bore us with the history of misspellings of famous players names; their obituaries and such.
Some of the best parts (the puzzles and miniatures) are troubled by poor editing of the chess lines(see below). This is somewhat resolved by the general good quality of the puzzles themselves(...)Overall I would give this book 3 and a half stars. The binding is nice (and better than -say- an Everyman chess binding) but the poor editorship really is taxing.

Duplicate information.......2007-08-27
This is a very good resource. It is easy to understand and use. However, don't make the mistake of also purchasing "The Craft Business Answer Book", by the same author. The description makes it sound like the book contains different information, but it doesn't. The covers are different, but the books are basically the same.
outdated and not so helpful.......2007-07-09
i found this book to be dry and not helpful for my home craft business purposes. It is now very much out of date also.

I have not been in the crafts business long, and I must say I found this book far more informative than others offered online. Highly recommended for newcomers like myself.
