    Book Description

Brian Crozier's memoir of his early life as a kind of Lord Berners bursts at the seams with art, literature, and music, offering an unusual insight into the formation of a real-life secret agent who has played a major role in underground conflicts. It also explores Crozier's other roles as poet, painter, pianist, and composer, and reveals a young man exploding with talents, hungry to possess the world, and gradually learning that the world is already in the wrong hands.

    5 out of 5 stars Rhonda Fleming.......2005-01-29

Lloyd Boston is totally awesome to have written this book. I stumbled upon this book while researching men's hats for a school research thesis. What I found was not only men and their hats, but historical detail about the Black man and his hat and who the man is with and without his headcovering. The sad thing at the time was that I had to return it to the library; but now that someone gave me a gift from Amazon.com, I am now purchasing this reference material, conversation piece This book a must have in my library and collection of fine art.

THANKS LLOYD BOSTON for sharing Men of Color: Fashion, History, and Fundamentals. And Thanks Amazon.com for allowing me to get it at an affordable price.

    5 out of 5 stars All I can say is -- WOW!.......2000-06-03

This book is NOT a fashion book as the understated subtitle suggests. Instead, I am looking at a GALLERY of fine Black men throughout the ages with their "fashions" being very secondary.

This book is filled with WONDERFUL color and black and white photos of Black men -- famous and unknown, past and present. This book is monumentally political for it demonstrates why the Black man is loved, hated, feared, hunted, and reverenced throughout the world! This book is a job well-done.

    4 out of 5 stars Men of Color - What a find.......2000-05-09

I thought the book was excellent. It artfully combines historical content with practical advice that any African American male can use. I always thought it took a lot of money to look great. But using this book as a guide definitely helped.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Have for All Stylish Men.......2000-04-15

This book is simply amazing. I received the book as a gift from my fiancee and have treasured this book ever since. First, the photographs are amazing, pleasant, and necessary reminders of the way stylish men of color have shaped style and fashion over the years. Second, there is the instructional aspect of the book that covers matters outside of clothing and which I can't say enough about. After reading the section of the book that dealt with hair and skin care, I was motivated to go buy shaving soap and shaving brush and dispense with the shaving gel. Thanks to Lloyd Boston and this book I have had the best shaving experiences of my life. I can't say how necessary this book is for the many black men who go through the drama of ingrown facial hair. I have less drama than most in that department, but I have still seen a remarkable improvement in my skin, as would any man after following the book's advice. The book even arms you with the necessary vocabulary to navigate your way around a men's shop with ease. There is even instructions on how to do the perfect shoe shine! And as Lloyd Boston points out, well-shined shoes are the best complement to any wardrobe. So,to sum up this book, it is NECESSARY! It is necessary for any stylish man and any man who strives to be so. It is more than worth the money.

5 out of 5 stars Men of Color: Fashion, History, Fundamentals.......2000-01-25

After reading and reading and reading Lloyd Boston's book "Men of Color: Fashion, Historyi, Fundamentals", I can honestly say that I LOVE THIS BOOK! It is a source of reference to me when I buy gifts for the special men in my life or when they are unsure of how to buy for themselves. It is a conversation piece with all who enter my home. We reminisce about the pictures and ooh and ahh over beauty held within the pictures. My favorite interview is when Mr. Boston speaks with Jesse Jackson on youth culture and fashion. Thanks to Mr.Boston for the picture of Tyson Beckford and the other fine men!

5 out of 5 stars Our Men - Generations of Style, Class and Pizzazz!.......2002-11-20

This book is a classic..it has it all; from Marvin Gaye to LL Cool J...from Boxer Sugar Ray Robinson to our today's Michael Jordan, Men of color have a history of fashion that is detailed throughout this tabletop book.

The different types of suits, hats, styles of the periods are examined. Black men have always taken pride in their dress and appearance. This is revealed in all the remarkable pictures and the editorials and interviews. The pictures are Excellent! A combination of black & white, Sepia and some color. You have different poses, camera angels of men like Sam Jackson, Lenny Kravitz, Billy Dee, Ed Bradley...and so many more!!

This is a great investment....for yourself or as a gift! With all it has to offer, there is much to appreciate about Men of Color.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect Gift for the Guy That Has It All.......2001-06-04

I bought this book for myself and I've truly enjoyed it. I received a second copy from a co-worker as a Christmas Gift. I think that it's very interesting to look at the different styles of Black Men of years past.

I loved the Different Profile Commentary from Byrant Gumble, Bill Cosby, Ed Bratley, etc. I really respect each one's own personal sense of style.

I was given my second copy from a White Female Co-worker, who simply loves the book. I really think that she hated to give it up. Perhaps I'll buy her her own copy in the future.

5 out of 5 stars Fun book for riders of all ages!.......2006-03-03

I grew up with Norman Thelwell's cartoons and books as a young rider. Loved them as a kid, and ordered this book to share with my students. It's such a great little tool for learning about both useful and fun facts about horses and ponies. Anyone who has ever owned or ridden a Shetland pony will appreciate Thelwell's illustrations, anecdotes, and poor determined little Penelope's plight.

5 out of 5 stars cherished since childhood.......2000-11-16

I was so happy to find that this book (collection of three books actually) by Thelwell had been re-released. As another reviewer said the quality of the illustrations are not a good as the origional editions. But the spirit of his art and humour is still intact. This book is a collection of very funny sketches of horses and their owners going through everything that horses and their owners go through, then some. For example: bathing and grooming your horse. Plenty of opportunity for fun when your horse is reluctant or your skills are lacking. Another example: riding. "never try out novel ways of getting into a saddle....you'll enjoy quite enough variety-...getting out of it". The illustrations, of course, hilariously illustrate the point. So the book is a combination of clever comments and observations and illustrations that bring the humour to life. It is also VERY British. English riding exclusively in this book and the humour is very British as well(Thelwell approaches western riding in 'Pony Panorama').If you like 'Punch' you will appreciate Thelwell. Also check out Thelwells books on gardening, golf etc. He is a master of his art. (P.S. if you want inspiration for an easy to do mural for your horseloving childs wall this book is perfect - your only problem will be choosing which illustration to copy - they are all so funny and wonderful)

    4 out of 5 stars re-release.......2000-05-12

Thelwell's Pony Cavalcade is a re-release of his earlier books "Angels on Horseback," "A Leg at Each Corner," and "Riding Academy." The cartoons are delightful, and will be appreciated by all horsepeople.

    3 out of 5 stars Sadly disappointed . . ........2000-05-09

I purchased this book for my pony-crazy daughter, but am sadly disappointed. Poor quality printing makes this edition of Norman Thelwell's timeless equine drawings pale in comparison to other, earlier versions. The muddy reproductions of Thelwell's drawings blur or omit the amazing detail of the originals, which made them so memorable when I first read then as a child. I will be perusing the used-book sites for the circa 1970 editions to share with my daughter!

          Product Description

The three titles edited, revised and combined in this volume, How To Do Things Right, How to Retire at 41, and How to Be Good, will have you laughing out loud, thinking hard, and at least temporarily rearranging your frazzled life. Hills is wise, witty, and very, very funny. His mission is to create order out of chaos; to make the arcane methodology of fussiness respectable; to elevate, and even ennoble, those fleeting instincts we all harbor to get our lives in order. All aspects of life are examined here: from how to eat an ice-cream cone to how to develop "principles" when you have none. But behind the frivolous facade, Hills remains a deeply sage and serious writer, a modern combination of Robert Benchley, Henry David Thoreau, and Michel de Montaigne. This is his best advice, served up from the heart of one of the most charming humorists to grace the American scene.

2 out of 5 stars The Revelations of a Silly Man.......2006-01-08

If you're from an upper middle class background and are concerned about issues like how to retire young on a limited income, this book may be of interest to you. Mr. Hills, former fiction editor at Esquire magazine, comes from that privileged background and discusses it at length. Unfortunately, it began to disappear in the 1960s and is pretty much gone as an option for today's bright Ivy League English major.

The publisher, David R. Godine, suffers from the hubris common to quality presses -- the idea that they have discovered literary gems that only need be published to be fully appreciated. Godine accomplished this with its publication of several volumes of Orwell's overlooked essays, but the rest of its output is undistinguished.

If you do decide to read it, read the third book (How to Be Good) first, particularly "Professional Ethics, as Against the Morality of an Occupation" which appears on pages 198-200. It is especially apposite in the current Bush era.

The one thing that one does expect from a small press of this type is quality bindings and covers (witness the now defunct, and much missed, North Point Press). While that is true of many of Godine's other products, this offering disappoints in that regard.

          4 out of 5 stars A deserving classic.......2005-01-04

I first read L. Rust Hills when a friend loaned me his original little book (which is the first of this trilogy). His essays on such subjects as how to conduct a perfect dinner party, how to eat an ice cream cone, and so on are classics. This is not a book to be studied or pored through, but rather one to be picked up and enjoyed in small chunks.
But what about the other two books in the trilogy, here bound together? How To Be Good is not a book of humor, although it is written with humorous charm. It's a serious book about how to have morality in an immoral, or at least amoral, world. How To Retire At 41 starts out as a humorous look at how to adjust to retirement, and turns into a self-revelatory autobiography. Useful to start with and then affecting.
It's a surprise to have the trilogy together, but if you take each part in its own way (humor, morality, essay on life adjustment) it's really a gem.
Incidentally, I have several times lent my copy of How To Retire At 41 to friends contemplating retirement (or struggling with it) because it's very good in that regard. And I love the way it deals with, and dismisses, the question of finances in just a few sentences at the beginning!
For my vote, an excellent book to enjoy and to lend out. (Darn, who did I last lend my copy to???)

          3 out of 5 stars Re-read recently.......2001-09-03

I read this book again recently after finding a copy at the library. I still am not overly fond of this book, but I don't dislike it as much as I used to. A lot of Mr. Hill's oppinions on life in general are very witty and reasonably funny. However, I still think that he dwells to much on the (un-funny) day-to-day routines of his life. Perhaps if he had sped things along a little I could have given his book four stars instead of three.

2 out of 5 stars Rambling old man.......2001-03-17

This guy really knows how to put people to sleep. I attempted to read this book on a flight from Dallas to Cincinatti. Thirty minutes after take-off (and when I began reading) I was fast asleep. As I never can sleep on planes, this can give you some idea how dull this book is. The first chapters were sort of funny, but the latter half seemed to be just a reproduction of his Day Runner ("6 pm January 17. Drool on self ") I think it could have been far better if the author had stuck to the actual title of the book (namely- How to do things right) instead of Ramblings of an old man.

5 out of 5 stars Hilarious Serious Philosophy.......2000-12-26

These highly comic essays start with simple instruction--how to eat an ice cream cone, how to fold a map--and move swiftly to more complex issues. In "How Not to Drink and Smoke So Much," for example, you can commiserate with Hills about the beloved 'tuddy' and learn from his early experiments in cutting down. Hills' aptitude for ingenious acronyms is displayed throughout the book. The essays become progressively more revealing--as when he describes a midlife breakdown in all its schizophrenic absurdity--and more seriously philosophical. His ideas about "undoing America," Montaigne, and about the desirability of eccentric traits are humorous, but they have a distinctly profound underside. I give this book to all my coolest friends.

                  Book Description

Boldly confronting the neoconservative Project for the New American Century, world-renowned physicist and activist Vandana Shiva responds with Earth Democracy, or, as she prophetically names it, "The People's Project for a New Planetary Millennium." A leading voice in the struggle for global justice and sustainability, here Shiva describes what earth democracy could look like, outlining the bedrock principles for building living economies, living cultures and living democracies.

Starting from the initial enclosure of the commons-the privatization of six million acres of public land in eighteenth-century Britain-Shiva goes on to reveal how the commons continue to shrink as more and more natural resources are patented and fenced. Accompanying this displacement from formerly accessible territory, she argues, is a growing attitude of disposability that erodes our natural resources, ecological sustainability and cultural diversity. Worse, human beings are by no means safe from this assignment of disposability. Through the forces of neoliberal globalization, economic and social exclusion work in deadly synergy to perpetrate violence on vulnerable groups, extinguishing the lives of millions.

Yet these brutal extinctions are not the only trend shaping human history. Forthright and energetic, Vandana Shiva updates readers on the movements, issues and struggles she helped bring to international attention-the genetic engineering of food, the theft of culture and the privatization of natural resources-and deftly analyzes the successes and new challenges the global resistance now faces. From struggles on the streets of Seattle and Cancun and in homes and farms across the world has grown a set of principles based on inclusion, nonviolence, reclaiming the commons and freely sharing the earth's resources. These ideals, which Shiva calls "earth democracy," will serve as unifying points in our current movements, an urgent call to peace and the basis for a just and sustainable future.

1 out of 5 stars Academically dishonest book that would actively hurt the left if made mainstream.......2007-06-28

This book is full of flawed logic, false data, endnotes (not footnotes) that reference her own work and the work of like-minded contemporaries, but rarely an opponent (unless to use their quote out of context) or even an expert on topics like history (apparently, Jeremy Rifkin is more of an expert than Robert Darnton).

She advocates a return to medieval, European feudalism. Apparently, life was wonderful for the peasants (For a rebuke, read Darnton). Also, medieval Europe was a time of peace, equality. Also, war and religious intolerance didn't exist before capitalism emerged in the 16th century. Why on earth wouldn't we go back?

Incredibly, she talks about issues of biodiversity and ecology and refers to herself as a scientist. She is a scientist, but not, as you might be led to believe by this book, a biologist. She is a theoretical physicist, whose doctoral thesis was on quantum physics

                  Also,

There are plenty of anti-capitalist, anti-corporate, anti-globalization arguments to be made and it distresses me that so much of the left gives the rest of us a bad name by relying so much on academically dishonest books like this. This is the left wing equivalent to Ann Coulter (in terms of dishonesty, not personal attacks).

Shiva is a kind of Mama Kali, defending her village farmers and their environments with cool resolve or fact-spitting outrage. Coming off a series of victories over corporate bio-pirates, she shares the state of struggle for the local nature-workers of India to manage their future. Here are a few of her lines:

"What has been called the tragedy of the commons is, in fact, the tragedy of privatization." (p. 55)

"The enclosure of biodiversity and knowledge is the latest step in a series of enclosures that began with the rise of colonialism. Land and forests were the first resources to be enclosed and converted from commons to commodities. Later, water resources were enclosed through dams, groundwater mining, and privatization schemes. Now it is the turn of biodiversity and knowledge to be "enclosed" through intellectual property rights (IPRs)." (p. 39)

[In the Navdanya movement] "More than 200,000 farmers are working to enrich the earth, create properity for rural producers, and provide quality food to consumers. ... [Their work] reintroduces biodiverse farming to both replace chemicals as fertilizers and pesticides and to increase the productivity and nutritional value of crops. ... Navdanya farmers are able to reduce their expenses by the 90 percent that was used to buy chemicals and create corporate profits. ... The incomes of Navdanya farmers are three times higher than the incomes of chemical farmers..." (pp. 67-68)

"Ecological security is our most basic security; ecological identities are our most fundamental identity. We ARE the food we eat, the water we drink, the air we breathe. And reclaiming democratic control over our food and water and our ecological survival is the necessary project for our freedom." (p. 5)

In "Earth Democracy", Indian ecofeminist Vandana Shiva powerfully defends the rights of Third World farmers against agribusiness monopolies, biotechnology and international financial institutions like the WTO, World Bank and IMF. In a brilliant deconstruction of capitalist patriarchy, Shiva explains how market fundamentalism breeds religious fundamentalism and explores the many ways that corporate globalization negatively impacts the lives of low-income women around the world. Importantly, Shiva explains how the colonization of DNA by multinational corporations is an extension of the colonization of Asia, Africa and the Americas by an imperialist male white elite. Outlining how the preservation of seed, water and sustainable food systems are a prerequisite for peace and real security, "Earth Democracy" is a timely and informative read for global justice activists interested in alleviating world hunger, healing the environment and creating peace.

5 out of 5 stars A more peaceful and secure future.......2006-03-05

"Earth Democracy" by Vandana Shiva offers both a masterful critique of globalization and a hopeful vision for a better world. Ms. Shiva compares and contrasts top-down systems of authoritarianism and exclusion with bottom-up systems of egalitarianism and mutual cooperation to discuss how corporate power is proving to be a grave threat to democracy and the long-term viability of the planet. Ms. Shiva contends that a mutually-supportive network of empowered local communities might be able to create a global society that is based on humanitarian principles of peace, compassion and solidarity.

Ms. Shiva has long been highly regarded as an activist and scholar. She has authored many books and is a frequent media commentator. "Earth Democracy" serves to further Ms. Shiva's stature as a leading intellectual who continues to eloquently voice the concerns of the poor. Her unique ability to blend science, history, politics, economics, gender issues and other fields of study into her text is impressive. The result is a book that rewards its readers with many pages of thought-provoking insight and analysis.

Ms. Shiva points out that two thirds of humanity owes its livelihood to a sustenance economy that finds itself under increasing pressure from capital. She finds similarities in the earlier eras of enclosure and colonialism with today's struggle over intellectual property rights and patents, where the powerful use the law to privatize resources for profit. Arguing that overconsumption by the wealthy is the root cause of environmental destruction and human injustice, Ms. Shiva makes a compelling case for granting local communities more control over resources so that alternative, sustainable economies can be nurtured.

Ms. Shiva brilliantly connects the insecurity wrought by globalization with the "ideologies of exclusion" and "cultural nationalism" that fuels war and terrorism. As state power largely serves to protect corporate interests, the economically uprooted and excluded masses seek identity through nationalist conflict and sometimes prove vulnerable to manipulation by religious extremists. On the other hand, Ms. Shiva cites the Indian farmer's struggles over seed and water rights as examples of how people might come together in a positive way to reclaim a more peaceful and secure future.

Ms. Shiva reminds us that Mahatma Gandhi proved how small acts of resistance can hasten the end of empire. She believes that a multiplicity of movements such as Terra Madre that are struggling for food security, the environment, democracy and human rights will help us break free from the self-destructive path that has been prescribed for us by the corporate elite.

I highly recommend this important and inspiring book to everyone.

4 out of 5 stars An excellent primer.......2006-02-24

A well-written discussion of some of the most important issues facing humanity in the 21st Century. The book does, however, jump from topic-to-topic with relatively little deep discussion. Still, "Earth Democracy" is a refreshing change from what passes for "scholarship" in much of the Left-press. On the other hand, being a shorter work does make it more accessible to the neophyte environmentalist who may be unfamiliar with the issues concerned. An excellent primer on the new corporate-ecology facing us all today.
