The Parthenon Frieze
ASIN: 0521641616 |
Book Description
While the sculpted Ionic frieze of the Parthenon with its galloping horsemen and classically portrayed gods is reproduced in every art history text and has been much studied by scholars, no single book has yet been devoted to all its myriad aspects. This study by classical archaeologist and art historian Jenifer Neils breaks new ground by considering all aspects of this complex and controversial monument. Although the frieze has been studied for over two hundred years, most scholarship has sought an overall interpretation of the iconography rather than focusing on the sculpture's visual language, essential for a full understanding of the narrative. Neils' study not only decodes the language of the frieze, but also analyzes its conception and design, style and content, as well as its impact on later art. Unusual for its wide-ranging approach to the frieze, this book also brings ethical reasoning to bear on the issue of its possible repatriation as part of the on-going Elgin Marble debate. As one of the foremost examples of the high classical style and the finest expression of mid-fifth century Athenian ideology, the Parthenon frieze is without doubt one of the major monuments of western civilization, and as such deserves to be understood in all its dimensions. The accompanying CD-ROM contains a virtual reality Macromedia Director movie of the complete frieze, based on the plaster casts in the Skulpturhalle in Basel, Switzerland. Developed by Rachel Rosenzweig of the Department of Greek and Roman Art of the Cleveland Museum of Art, the casts are arranged in conformity with Neils' reconstruction and enable the user to view them in succession, as if walking around the Parthenon. The CD-ROM requires a computer running either MAC OS 8.01 or later, or Windows 95 or later.

Good reference book.......2007-02-20
I bought this book because I took part in an art restoration project. Although the author is a bit wordy, she does a good job in presenting the material. The historical context is moderately strong and I like the inclusion of photographs.

Book Description
Never shy about commenting on sensitive and controversial political and social events, Prickly City is always timely yet humorous. This first collection of the conservative strip is sure to move right along with today's political current, while giving its readers plenty of reasons to laugh.
Carmen, a straightforward, sensible kid, and her unlikely best friend, Winslow the innocent coyote pup, frolic and tussle in the American Southwest while discussing such hot-button issues as condoms in schools, violent video games, gay marriage, and highly contested presidential campaigns. As Carmen might say, "We may not be correct but we will always be right."
Prickly City creator Scott Stantis has emerged as an up-and-coming conservative social and political voice. His strip is syndicated in more than 40 newspapers, in such big markets as Los Angeles, Washington, D.C., Chicago, Seattle, Denver, Detroit, San Antonio, and Atlanta.
Customer Reviews:
Not Funny - Just Sad.......2007-07-24
Stantis obviously aspires to be entertaining and politically relevant, but fails miserably on both counts. Conservatives have long been resentful of the popularity of Doonesbury, which they feel is a left-wing comic (it's not - Trudeau takes swipes at those of all political persuasions). In Prickly City, they feel they have a standard-bearer. I have to admit that at least it's not as obscenely single-minded as Mallard Fillmore, but clever? Insightful? Not really. Mildly amusing at best, Prickly City is hindered by an obvious right-wing viewpoint which cripples any real chance to explore the
flaws and inconsistencies of the political process.
Wish there's more "Prickly City" books.......2007-01-03
My newspaper runs the strip in the "opinion" page (after over 2 years in the regular comics page) and it's one of the strips I look forword to everyday.
A lot of people doesn't like the drawing style, but I for one think it's cool looking. It can sometimes be TOO sketchy but it's not too awful. And the writing isn't too bad. Pretty poetic in some strips, actually. So in essence, it's generally has the feel of those ancient strips, with strips about the current pop culture and politics.
This book collects the first 9 months of the strip (from July 2004 to April 2005). I'm hoping there will be more book collections, soon.
So, whether you're a liberal or a conservative, or just plain nuts, I think it's worth reading the strip.
(hey, I think we can all agree the strip is WAY better than "Mallard Fillmore")
Blue states, red states.......2006-03-16
As one of the other reviewers wrote, liberals are not likely to really enjoy Prickly City because the views expressed tend to be different from or the opposite of theirs. However, I think that even liberals such as myself are capable of judging degree of quality. If this strip were truly insightful and clever it would not make me laugh but it would inspire grudging admiration for the way the cartoonist got his/her point across in a humorous way(It's like the way I detest the agenda Karl Rove helps forward but truly admire his inspired, effective tactics.) However, the strip is only rarely funny, i.e., only rarely is his message/idea creatively transformed into a really good cartoon: add the graphics and words together and the result is just graphics and words.
On a final note I just want to mention that I, a LIBERAL, do not actually find Boondocks to be reliably funny. As with Prickly City, a young kid spouting a party line is just odd. Some reviewer wrote that "Prickly Pear" resembled "Calvin & Hobbes" --- neither it nor Boondocks comes close to the quality of "C&H". Calvin was a normal (i.e., non-partisan child) kid who did and said all of the funny things kids do and say, but had an odd streak in his humor that set him, and the strip, above the crowd(remember those snowman dismemberment scenes he'd set up?)
----- so why 2 stars rather than 1? Well, for some reason I find the big ole' head of the Prickly City girl cute, but more importantly I reserve my 1-star rating for the scrapings from the bottom of the proverbial barrel.
Refreshing .......2005-11-28
Ignore the fools who claim to have purchased this book without knowing what was in it. Any high school student could read half this book standing in the book store. Those that don't like it, don't like it because it doesn't agree with their politics, plain and simple. I can disagree with a liberal cartoonist's politics, but appreciate their satire. A clever cartoon is a clever cartoon reguardless of whether or not you agree with the opinion. I agree with the politics in prickly city and laugh at the satire.. so for me it's a win win situation.
I Hate this book!.......2005-11-05
I bought this book because I thought it would be funny but I had no idea it was primarily political, conservative views thinly disguised as humor. I think I found most offensive the strips where the coyote pup tells the young human girl that they can now get married because of the MA Supreme Court ruling allowing gay marriage; hardly a fair comparison to equate marriage between an animal and a child to marriage between two adults of the same sex! This book is more of the same all the way through; pro Bush, pro conservative religion, pro war. I'm sorry I wasted my money on it. It isn't even funny, just irritating and offensive. My copy went into the trash.

Book Description
Twelve themes from all three blockbuster films. Includes: The Prophecy, In Dreams, Concerning Hobbits, Many Meetings, The Black Rider, Gollum's Song, Rohan, Evenstar, Forth Eorlingas, Into The West, The Steward Of Gondor and Minas Tirith. Each book contains a carefully edited part that is appropriate for the Level 2-3 player and a fully orchestrated accompaniment CD. Each theme on the CD is presented as a "demonstration" track (which features that particular instrument) and also as a "play-along" track without the solo instrument. The string series was written especially for violin, viola, and cello. Each book features a piano accompaniment and a carefully crafted removable string part complete with bowings, articulations, and keys well suited for the Level 2-3 player. A fully orchestrated accompaniment CD, with demo tracks (featuring live string performances) and play-along tracks, completes each package. The string books are completely compatible with each other and can be played together or as solos. Due to level considerations, the string books are not compatible with the books in the wind series.
Customer Reviews:
The best notes !!!.......2005-06-30
The best I ever played !! Very easy to play and original the film !!!!
pretty darn good.......2005-01-24
Personally, I have really enjoyed this piano book. The pieces are meant to be accompaniments for instruments such as trumpet or clarinet, but they contain enough of the melody that they can be enjoyed on their own. "Concerning Hobbits" has to be the highlight of this collection. I have been playing piano for four years and am concidered intermediate to late intermediate, and this is exactly my level. If you are not that advanced, you can pick through the melody line written above the music. There are some very neat pictures in this book too. I would reccomend this selection very highly. (I would have given it 4.5 stars, but you can't give half stars.)

Book Description
Confident about endgames? Even many experienced players would admit to a serious lack of knowledge in this department, and yet it’s in this section of the game where many points are won and lost over the chessboard. This pocket-sized book can be the answer to all the players' problems! Grandmaster Neil McDonald studies the fundamental endings and provides the reader with all the crucial knowledge, tactics, and plans. At the same time, he is careful not to swamp readers with superfluous information; there is simply enough wisdom here to make them feel confident in all types of practical endings.
*Written by an renowned endgames expert
*Every major endgame is examined
*A pocket book ideal for club and tournament players
Customer Reviews:
I used not to like endgames... Until this little book..........2003-05-06
So, here I am spoiling a game where I earned an advantage in the endgame because of poor technique... How frustrating!
I decided to solve this ridiculous problem by studying the endgame. Having Basic Chess Endgames by Fine I started there. However, it was a drag... The explanations were lacking and the format of the book was so bad that it didn't invite me to study it. In addition some of BCE's endings are incorrect (OK, I will be fair: R. Fine didn't have access to computer programs during his days to check the endings.)
Then I saw this black little book: "Concise Chess Endings" by GM McDonald. Hmmmm! At first I thought that this can't be a serious book and didn't think much of it until I opened it. I decided to study it and think of it as a quick fix to my problems... Little did I know!
When I finished the first chapter about pawn endings I was like, why didn't somebody explained this to me before? Then I read it again to work on my recently gained knowledge. Then I started studying the rook endings chapter and learned how to draw (and win) a K+R+P vs. K+R ending... What was most amazing is that the knowledge was applied within a matter of two weeks because I had to salvage a draw in this very same ending! Was this a coincidence or what? I mean, after reading a couple of chapters of Concise Chess Endings I had the chance to apply the newly acquired knowledge over the board!
Surely, this book alone will not solve ALL your problems in the endgame but it is a refreshing start nonetheless! After completing the whole book I decided that it was time to be serious about the endgame and decided to educate myself by reading other books: BCE's by Fine deserved a chance and I decided to pursue it even further. I decided also to buy Fundamental Chess Endings by Muller and Lamprecht and was very, very surprised with its quality...
Anyway, Concise Chess Endings (CCE) will provide you with a fair knowledge to tackle most commonly encountered endings in practice. It will not solve all of your techinque problems but it will motivate you to pursue the study of endings in a more systematic way.
I still come back to CCE to brush upon my newly gained knowledge. GM McDonald is by far one of the best chess writers around. I own many of his books and have not been disappointed with his stuff.
Unique format makes this book special.......2002-12-27
The page format is small (about ¼ size of the usual book), but the book is very thick - 288 pages. I think that the format is the main strength and somewhat of a weaknesses.
Strengths - nice looking endgame book. A lot of info is squeezed into the book and plenty of diagrams to make your reading somewhat easier. GM McDonald doesn't try to cut corners, he covers all major aspects of endgames, provides some new and recent examples and offers a lot of annotations. Then again, the book can fit in one's pocket.
Weaknesses - there is no sign whose move it is in the diagram. So one is out of luck when trying to analyze the position before seeing the authors comments? In my opinion, this is a best way to study and authors/publishers must address it. I imagine, because is small and thick book, binding was a serious challenge task and I don't like the outcome. The book is not a pleasure to open and read! I am always concerned that it may start breaking apart.
Overall, I would suggest to experienced players buying this book primarily to use while commuting or during classes or business meetings at the office. The book can easily fit in your pocket. However, personally, I am tearing the book apart before it's binding breaks on its own. This way, I can just carry a few chapters in my pocket at the time and have much more pleasant time turning the pages. Beginners, should study more seriously and always use chessboard. Thus they wouldn't benefit from this book as much as from books by Averbach, Alburt, Muller, Capablanca and Fine.
Lives up to its name.......2002-10-22
Author McDonald tries--and, to a certain extent, succeeds--to whittle the essential elements of endgame play into a compact, convenient volume. It incorporates the basics of Averbakh's classic "Chess Endings: Essential Knowledge," along with the how-to instruction of Chernev's "Capablanca's Best Chess Endings." It even includes some advanced material that you'd find in Fine's standard reference, "Basic Chess Endings." McDonald even includes endings from recent grandmaster play to illustrate the finer points of the endgame. This is as close to a small endgame encyclopedia as I've seen. This little book is not to be underestimated.
Still, I think its list price of [...] is a bit steep. If you'd rather spend that much on a truly complete endgame book, try a used copy of the aforementioned book by Fine, or any endgame book by Mednis.

Book Description
Principles of Finance with Excel is the first textbook that comprehensively integrates Excel into the teaching and practice of finance. This book provides exceptional resources to the instructor and student, combining classroom-tested pedagogy with the full potential of Excel's powerful functions. In today's business world, computation is done almost wholly in Excel. Excel's ability to combine graphics with computation and perform complex sensitivity analysis with ease provides potent insights into financial problems. Despite this, most finance texts rely heavily on hand-held calculators and ignore Excel. As a result, many students find that after they enter the professional environment, they have to relearn both finance and Excel. Principles of Finance with Excel is ideal for undergraduate courses in introductory finance or as a reference for finance professionals. A Free In-Text CD for students contains electronic versions of all spreadsheets in the book. A Companion Website -- http://www.oup.com/us/benninga -- contains lecture notes, PowerPoint Slides, and a Test Bank for instructors.

Good material, but full of errors........2007-05-28
This book is clear, concise, easy to follow, and solidly covers the fundamentals of finance. The excel portions are equally impressive, and the practical applications are clear. However, the examples and especially the solutions on the enclosed CD are riddled with mistakes and transcription errors. Frankly, I get the impression that the examples on the CD were put together by on of Benninga's less than stellar students. Three or four mistakes per exercise problem is what I found to be typical. Most of the errors are rather obvious, like saying months when they mean years, the examples in the book having different values than the corresponding problem on the CD, etc., but many of the problems are incorrectly solved as well. In at least one instance, they show the solution to an earlier problem instead of the problem they are supposed to be solving. There is also occasional bad grammer: "Note that the inflation series is not a trivial to put together"
All in all, the text isn't bad, and I've learned a lot from working through it. I just wish more time had been spent checking his work.
Nice book.......2007-05-15
It is a very useful book.I advise every financial practitioner to own this book and keep it as a refrence.
Great book..........2007-05-13
It is the best finance book that I ever put my hands on. Easy to understand if you are a beginner in the field; great to consolidate your knowledge and learn essential tips, if you are knowlegeable in finance.
