Book Description

What is the function of painting in a commercial society? John Barrell discusses how British artists and writers of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, including Sir Joshua Reynolds, William Blake, and James Barry attempted to answer this question. His provocative and illuminating book offers a new perspective on both art criticism and eighteenth-century British culture.

4 out of 5 stars flawed brilliance.......1999-02-27

Though Barrell's interpretation of Reynolds's shifts in political alleigence during the course of the Discourses is sometimnes strained, there is no doubt that his central thesis concerning the 'body of the public' in 18th century art theory is profoundly important and illuminating. Barrell's discussion of aesthetic and poltical theories is always brilliant, provocative and intellectually stimulating. Alas, when he abandons the 'civic' discourse of the eighteenth century to address the world of Blake and Hazlitt he gets into a bit of a mess. His comments on Blake are eccentric to say the least. Neverthless, he does force us to radically rethink our attitudes to all the figures discussed here. This book is indispensable.

the stroy line was good and it had nice flow to it but it could have dealt a little more with the relationship that she had already developed with oracle.

                    3 out of 5 stars Nightwing/Huntress bi Devin Grayson.......2006-05-20

This graphic novel collects the four issue Nightwing/Huntress miniseries.
SUMMARY: A hooker is killed, a mobster is framed and Huntress and Nightwing are on the case.
Nightwing is the original Robin all grown up, Huntress is the rough mafia princess whose family was murdered by the mob and now seeks to inflict her own brand of justice. The bat-family disaproves of Huntress because she is too hardcore for their taste, and a little bit of a tramp. Huntress wants to unlock the secrets of the bat-family so she sleeps with NW to try to break into the batfamilys secrets all the while solving the case of the dead hooker. The art by Greg Land is just OK and so is the writing. I only purchased this book because i like both characters, BUT they really don't have any chemistry between them. AND i really hated the scene when Nightwing calls Oracle from Huntresses apartment after having sex with her, talk about passive agressive. EP

                    4 out of 5 stars A Great Crime Story.......2005-07-26

People are making way too much out of this book's implication that Nightwing and Huntress "hook up." I bought this book because I like these characters, but was bracing myself for some tasteless love-tripe. The situation is barely in the book! Here it is:
                    ---------------------------------------
[At the end of Chapter 2...]

Nightwing: "...I've been working alone for quite a while now and it's...fine, I'm good at it, but I --- sometimes I'm just so..."

                    Huntress: "...lonely?" [they kiss]

                    [Beginning of Chapter 3...]

Nightwing wakes up in her apartment wearing only his boxer-briefs.
                    ---------------------------------------
                    That's it! Not even PG-13.

Yes, the love connection seems a little forced and awkward. However, there is a great crime story here, and it's only briefly interrupted by this minor episode. Their short romance leads to some great tension in future DC books, like in Birds of Prey (Huntress joins that group of super-chicks along with Nightwing's sort-of girlfriend, Oracle). It does not ruin this book. Here's why...

Devin Grayson does a great job with the crime story, a suspenseful thriller about a murder, the mafia, and crooked cops. The author creates a compelling tale that you want to keep reading. Ms. Grayson explores the characters' differences and similarities, explaining their opposing philosophies on crime-fighting and life in general. This shows why their personal relationship can only go so far.

The artists do a fine job as well. Greg Land and Bill Sienkiewicz team up for some memorable artwork, detailed but not over-done.

So in the end, I would recommend this book. An even better one is the "Batman & Huntress" trade paperback by Greg Rucka, a great crime story and Huntress' origin story are included. Huntress is also depicted well in Gail Simone's run on "Birds of Prey," Simone has rescued that series. If you want more Nightwing, check out Judd Winick's run on the "Outsiders," a fun and gritty super-team book.

                    Happy reading!

3 out of 5 stars Not as bad as previously advertised.......2004-08-31

Part of the reason that I decided to write this review was to provide a second opinion since there is and has been only one review for this book.

Firstly, the plot is irrelevant, as the sole purpose of this mini-series was to create an atmosphere where Nightwing and Huntress could become romantically involved. People familiar with both characters and the "DC Universe" in general will already have a knowledge of the Nightwing-Huntress dynamic (Nightwing is restrained, Huntress is unpolished, and etc.). Whenever these two have come into contact, the clash of styles has always defined their relationship and in many instances, driven the plot. It is no different here. With that said, the inclusion of it in the story is neither innovative nor compelling.

The main reason why I am giving this book a positive review is that it further complicates the relationship between Nightwing and Huntress. One may be compelled to say that the presence of this book reduces the credibility of both, recklessly altering the characters of two individuals that DC has spent years and even decades developing. My argument against this is that things change and people change. There needed to be more than just a clash of styles to drive their confrontations. Chuck Dixon has certainly used their affair as a point of tension during his run on Nightwing. Nightwing having his own monthly comic meant that there needed to be a direct association/history between the two in order for Huntress to make appearances. An affair is a plausible way to accomplish this. This book took Batman totally out of the picture - you now don't need point B to connect points A and C.

In addition, I would not take their later contentions that "it was a mistake" too literally as an editorial comment. What guy hasn't had an ex-girlfriend who they've conceded to a flaw in judgement? Ultimately, that's what it all boils down to - with no one around to judge them, two unchaperoned kids succumb to their hormones and do something they later regret. They have since reacted differently to each other because of it.

In the end, this graphic novel doesn't hold a straw to Alan Moore's "The Killing Joke" or even Doug Moench's "Knightfall" as required reading for Batman fans (you just have to "know" what happened at the beginning of the third comic, which everyone knows anyway). However, those who want to pick it up know what they're getting, and it's decent enough that if you happen not to like it, you wouldn't be kicking yourself too hard.

1 out of 5 stars It Never (Should Have) Happened.......2004-03-22

This story involves Nightwing (the former Robin) and Huntress getting together to solve a crime. During the process of the investigation they have a one-night stand.

I really disliked this story immensely primarily because both Nightwing and Huntress are written WAY out of character and do things that neither character would do.

Helena "Huntress" Bertinelli, is an Italian American, who comes from a traditional Italian background. She is a devout Catholic and more to the point she has a great sense of pride and self-respect. She would never stoop to seducing/sleeping with a man to get something. More so what she desires more than anything in the world is Batman's respect and approval. A smart and shrewd woman like Huntress would know that seducing his former pupil in order to get in with him. Would be the fastest way of NOT getting Batman's respect. It would make her nothing more than a prostitute. A reputation that Huntress would run a mile to stay away from.

Dick "Nightwing" Grayson is an old fashioned gentleman. He is not the type of guy who indulges in one-night stands. Especially with a woman he barely knows and whom he really doesn't like. He is a capable leader and is not easily manipulated, he would have seen right up front that Huntress had no genuine interest in him and would have not touched her.

Since this story was written three successive authors at DC comics have tried to 'clean' up the events in this book. By having both characters refer to what happened as a "mistake".

I totally agree. It was a "mistake" that this story ever saw the light of day. As it did a disservice to two great characters.

                            Book Description

Do you remember a time when ice cream parlors served sundaes with names like The Avalanche, The Kitchen Sink, and Mount St. Helen's? We would order one, or sometimes all three, and eat our fill without guilt. It was a time before we cared about diets, when we ate with wild abandon. As children, we delighted in eating--and more often, overeating! Second helpings were encouraged, manners were oftentimes ignored, and appetites were lustily satisfied. When Food Was Fun celebrates pure indulgence with photographs both warm and whimsical.

A pie-eating contest, that first bite of cotton candy, the perfect hot dog, huge licks of ice cream, feeding frenzies, and table etiquette gone awry. Cherished childhood memories born of our pursuits of the perfect bite. When Food Was Fun captures these moments in classic photographs that span the last sixty years, along with lively quotes about love, friendship, and food. Collectively, these joyful pages tell a story, evoke laughter, bring comfort, and remind us to indulge every now and then.

                            Book Description

In the Blink of an Eye is celebrated film editor Walter Murch's vivid, multifaceted, thought -- provoking essay on film editing. Starting with what might be the most basic editing question -- Why do cuts work? -- Murch treats the reader to a wonderful ride through the aesthetics and practical concerns of cutting film. Along the way, he offers his unique insights on such subjects as continuity and discontinuity in editing, dreaming, and reality; criteria for a good cut; the blink of the eye as an emotional cue; digital editing; and much more. In this second edition, Murch reconsiders and completely revises his popular first edition's lengthy meditation on digital editing (which accounts for a third of the book's pages) in light of the technological changes that have taken place in the six years since its publication.

This book was a required reading for my national university on-line class in digital video editing. The book is a short read that can be accomplished in two sittings. I read the second part of the book on digital editing first, as I have been editing for the past 10 years and have made the leap from analog to digital, myself. Murch relates the changes from a professional's point of view. He compares analog versus digital editing He outlines how the workflow of the editor and, indeed, the whole industry, as filmmaking is such a collaborative art, is changing due to the inevitable transition to a totally digital medium. I read the first part of the book next. Smartly, this saved the best for last as his most profound advice for editing is contained in the middle of the text, at the end of part one. Here he explains a moment in editing when he understood the essence of his editing choices on a particular movie, thus revealing the title of the book. This is a gem of a read for anyone interested in the working mind of a seasoned editor. I recommend it to film fans, students, and anyone interested in getting into the industry professionally.

Whether you have a passing fancy with movie editing, or just want to understand the anatomy of one of our greatest media achievements, you will like this book.

It is brief, clear and drops you into the world of film in a blink of an eye.

4 out of 5 stars It's a book about Story Telling and narrative design.......2007-02-23

Sometimes a book's own hype kills people's appreciation of it.

With Murch's classic, the problem is that it is considered a classic text about editing, simply because it is a biographical account of an editor at work.

It is not about the techniques or tools or modern equipment necessary to edit a film. If you seek a functional book to learn the fundamental skills of visual film editing, this is not something you should purchase.

It's very much more a story telling book. Most specifically if you are a writer, or, if you consider your film directing as 'writing with pictures,' this book will elevate your ability and understanding of 'writing with film.'

The old adage that 'film is a visual medium' is wrong.

Maybe that's why a get a little uppity about catchall phrases. Like "Film is a visual medium." It's not. Not really. It has music. It has dialogue. And, it exists over time.

One painting, is a visual medium.

Film, is 24-paintings per second with noise, weight, drama, visual, action, cognitive momentum, magic, and trust and hope. Film, as the casual and professional observer speaks of it, is more likely a cognitive medium. Film more closely approximates our external reality more than any other media, and it is Murch's perspective -- as the ultimate unifier of the other filmed elements -- that reminds us of that. He casually reveals what he knows about his art and how to design a dramatic narrative based on upon cognitive principles.

If you stumbled across this book just because you just dig making and writing films that much, than this book will excite you for the price of a Starbucks lunch. And it's better for your body than crumbcakes and coffee.

It's a quick read, and somewhat entertaining. Not something I would recommend as a schoolbook for an editing class, but if you are interested in the editing process, it's a good read.

4 out of 5 stars Good book if you've carved a duck before........2004-08-16

This book is a good book only if you've carved a duck before because it does not tell you what kind of knife to use, also it does not tell you to draw the basic front and back of the duck on the botton as guide lines. If you want to start carving buy the book "How to carve wood". It tells you how to carve a antique duck very clear. It also tells you what tools you need, and even how to sharpen them. After you purchase the book how to carve wood, then buy this book carving miniature duck decoys for patterns, and better techniues. Even though carving minauture duck decoys has good techniques it does not explain basic info. Buy the standard B bo-t handcrafted knife from woodcraft.com that is the best knife for basic carving. I hope this review helped.

4 out of 5 stars Carving Miniature Duck Decoys.......1999-12-01

The book is a large sized book primarily designed to give minimal instructions for carving decoys of common ducks. This is NOT a "how to whittle" book by any means. The writer assumes that you know how to use a carving knife already. The pages are of rather heavy paper that can be cut out or the staples removed so that you can use them to make your own patterns to carve the birds. Which is fairly standard for many books of this type. I used a photocopyer to copy the patterns so that I did not destroy the book ( I have a phobia about destroying books! Too many readings of Ferenheit 451 as a child I guess) I started by carving a Mallard and a wood duck. The Mallard took only a few hours of whittling with my X-Acto to get to reasonable completion level. The scale is about right for hand sized carving. A pocket knife or X-acto is perfect. The only place the book "fails" for me is in the design of the coloration of the birds. I know little about wild birds and would like some bettter guidance in this respect, though he has included two paces of color plates of completed carvings and suggests that the reader research the birds in other books. Not a bad idea at that. If you are interested in carving, this is a pretty good way to start in with miniature decoys. For the more mercinary of you, in my travels last week, I saw a slightly larger decoy in a store priced at $125. Where's my carving knife?

Taxes for Dummies: 1998 Edition, by Eric Tyson and David J. Silverman, is another title in the bestselling Dummies series, in which Tyson has authored four other books. Accurate and reliable in its lighthearted presentation, Taxes for Dummies includes tax-planning tips that will help you save money beyond April 15. While the book is just right for the average taxpayer, it may lack for people wanting a more in-depth guide--such as those running a small business from home or those trying to figure out capital gains on a mutual fund.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, Especially the Advice on Dealing with the IRS.......2005-01-09

Easy-to-read, well organized, and thoroughly helpful. I recommend "Taxes 2005 for Dummies" to people who want to prepare their own taxes, either by hand or by computer. Excellent advice and strategies for dealing with the IRS.

Table of contents lists each line of the tax form, making information easy to find. Provides instructions for the 1040EZ, 1040A and 1040. (Most books just cover the 1040.) Icons indicate tax-saving tips and warnings to keep you out of trouble. The writers have done an excellent job of turning IRS technical jargon into something we can actually understand.

The only book that guides you step by step to dealing with the IRS. If you received a letter from the IRS, this book will tell you what the letter means, and how to respond to it. The authors even provide sample letters so you can respond promptly. The exceptionally well-written advice for dealing with the IRS is worth the price of the whole book.

Information on reconstructing missing tax records is superb. The authors provide excellent suggestions for substantiating cost basis, business expenses, and fair market value.

The book does not include tax forms, so you will need to obtain them elsewhere (library, post office, on the Internet).

5 out of 5 stars Readable and Helpful.......2004-04-08

I purchased this book because I was using TaxCut Standard, which is not very helpful at times, and I got stuck on a particular form. This book helped me to understand the Individual 1040, using language that is more clear and personable than the official IRS instructions.

Anybody who itemizes deductions, or who might do so in the future, will find _Taxes for Dummies_ extremely helpful. Plus, throughout the book, there are tips for handling personal finances. Most of these are geared toward the higher-income earner, but nearly everyone can learn from the tips about home ownership and retirement savings. The advice is sound.

I strongly recommend this book as an aid for preparing one's own 2003 taxes.

4 out of 5 stars Comprehensive, but sometimes vague.......2004-03-21

I like this book a lot, because it gave me great ideas about how to structure my finances to take advantage of the tax deductions the government provides.

While the book makes it easy to read and understand your tax return, it fails in its efforts to make complicated tax issues simple. In many cases, I found more questions than answers, particularly in the parts that talk about the section 179 deduction and the modifications made after September 11, 2001.

If you are looking to be able to read and understand your tax return and to identify the tax deductions that are available, this is a great book. Even after reading it, however, you'll probably need a professional tax preparer to make sure you're doing it all correctly.

5 out of 5 stars Good no-nonsense guide to all sorts of tax situations.......2000-10-06

This book tries it's hardest to explain taxes in an easy to understand fashion for us normal people who don't have time to look through those extremely complex IRS instructions and other gibberish they give us taxpayers. The book does a pretty decent job of it too (however to accomplish that flawlessly, in my humble opinion, is impossible). Overall, any individual or small business that needs a few clues on how to do your taxes can benefit from this book. I can't wait for the 2001 edition to come out!

3 out of 5 stars Good for basics and new tax law description/definition........1999-02-21

The book answered all my questions on the new 1998 tax laws. It was also a good guideline for those of us who don't understand taxes very well and are more familiar with the EZ-forms. This was my second year doing the long form with all the attached schedules and the book helped me develop an understanding of what the majority of the terms and references mean. However, since the level of information was BASIC, some of my questions were not addressed and I did not like how the book stated, "...see your tax advisor...". The whole reason I bought the book was so that I wouldn't have to have someone else do my taxes. Although there are only a few unanswered questions for my case, this still prevented me from completing them on my own. Some topics that should be addressed more thoroughly are Capital Gains, Corporate Relocations, and Itemized Deductions. At a minimum, this book should provide a complete listing of topics not covered thoroughly enough to complete the tax forms, and refer you to another book (For Dummies)instead of a legal IRS publication (or tax advisor).
