Book Description

Written by renowned instructor John Raynes, this all-in-one guide will have novice artists successfully drawing a range of exciting subjects in a variety of mediums. The Ultimate Drawing Course delivers clear, step-by-step guidance designed to help artists build confidence, develop fundamental drawing skills and identify their own unique styles.

Divided into two parts, this book opens with a "Learning to See" section that illustrates the foundations of composition--shape, line, tone, texture, light and form--through examples of Raynes' work. Short practice exercises accompany each example, encouraging artists to "draw what they see." Raynes also shares special techniques for achieving numerous effects, including soft lights, shiny and rough textures, sharp-edged forms, and more.

In "Practicing Your Skills," artists will explore a variety of subjects, including landscapes, still lifes, buildings and figures, as they work through longer, more complex exercises that encourage them to flex their skills and push their creativity.

Throughout, Raynes offers proven advice for fixing and avoiding mistakes, and also explains the unique characteristics of a variety of mediums, so artists can work with them effectively right from the start.

John Raynes is one of the most accurate modern day artists that I have ever seen. His drawings are clear and concise. You can see the underlying structure of whatever it is he is drawing which makes it easier for the beginner to understand. This book is best for someone who is starting out. I would consider it the Ultimate Fundamenal Drawing Course. It concentrates on how to translate three dimensional form using everyday objects into wonderfully rendered two dimensional images using various media. I own all of Mr. Raynes books. If you are looking to learn from someone who knows what they are doing, then you have found an excellent resource. Very inspiring. For more of a textbook style, very detailed book on artistic human anatomy, start with Stephen Rogers Peck's Atlas of Human Anatomy for the Artist.

"ULTIMATE... Drawing Course" by John Raynes

"ULTIMATE"....now there's a WARNING WORD for you. Every book that uses one of these WARNING WORDS like "Ultimate" or "Essential" or "Complete Guide to" or "Absolute"....on the cover, always attmpts to draw in the buyer with the gimmick word. Really good drawing books never use such language in the title. I object also to the use of the phrase: "Easy-To-Follow Guide to Drawing"; because the simple fact is, some people find learning to draw "easy" but many others find it a struggle at first. Promising that it is going to be easy frequently turns out to be an empty promise.

The title implies that John Raynes has learned a thing or two about self-promotion from the WORLD WRESTLING FEDERATION.

Raynes' "Figure Drawing" book didn't impress me either, so it isn't surprising that the figure illustrations are no better here. Raynes' illustrations of senselessly abstract and hopelessly chaotic bathroom water valves, odd bottles, sliced melons, seashells and bicycles are uninspiring enough to make one turn away. The compositions are tedious and repetitive.

An example of Raynes' droll, overly-intellectualized written instruction appears on p. 58 in the form of a page-heading in large print:

"Metal is manmade, and there is almost no limit to the forms it can take." -John Raynes

(If that is relevent to learning to draw, then Raynes will probably tell us that watching paint dry is exciting also. For heaven's sakes, SILLY PUTTY is also "man-made" and can take any form; but what's that got to do with anything? Being told this isn't going to help anyone draw any better.)

By page 140, Raynes arrives at human portraits. Unfortunately, he skips drawing of eyes, nose, lips, ears, or the head generally up to that point in his "ULTIMATE" book. (Raynes doesn't address the matter in the pages on portraiture either!) At $20.00 the book is too pricey for too little substance. Just another hack art instructor trying to "cash in" on the trend to LEARN-HOW-TO-DRAW-ON-THE-CASH-IN-YOUR-WALLET fad of art instruction.

3 out of 5 stars Not quite what I was looking for.......2007-09-29

I bought this book with the intention of learning more about my Rebel DSLR. I am pretty disappointed with this title.

The first issue I have with this book is the photos are entirely uninspiring. Next, everything you need to know to get started is available in the Rebel manual, which I have read and just paid for again apparently.

If you've never taken a decent photo before in your life, if you've never used an SLR of any type, if you've need a very rudimentary understanding of the histogram, apertures and shutter speeds, or if you've managed to lose your Rebel XTi Manual from Canon, you might want to pick up this title.

Otherwise I don't think there is anything offered here you can't obtain with experimentation and experience.

Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTi/400D Digital Field Guide

This is an easy-to-read "how to" for Digital Rebel XTi users. Ms. Lowry is easy to understand and concise throughout this book, and I find that I turn to it quite often when shooting in different settings than I am used to.

If you're unfamiliar with your Canon XTi/400D, this really is the book to have!

5 out of 5 stars A great book for a beginning digital photographer.......2007-09-21

This book is well written, especially for a beginning photographer such as myself. Well stated review of the photographic essentials, lots of good recommendations concerning lenses, styles, settings, and a fairly complete list of all of the "knobs" that are available in the Digital Rebel. The last chapter has a lot of great examples and experiments that are fun to attempt. After reading this book, I keep it in my camera bag for reference, and have been having a lot of fun shooting volleyball and football games for my kids, as well as trying my hand at some more "artistic" styles of photography and having some mild successes after only having the camera for 3 weeks. Spent one evening with a half full glass of wine, and a lamp, shooting low light shots, and trying all of the applicable "knobs". Very informative, and gave me lots of good ideas for utilizing the camera's capabilities.

5 out of 5 stars Very good Easy to understand Book.......2007-09-21

This book is very easy to read and the writer speaks in plan english language. I have only read a couple of chapters but I found all of the instructions easy to follow. There are some photography projects in the later chapters that help you to understand more about how the camera functions and how you can get some great pictures from the Rebel XTI.

2 out of 5 stars Little more than a rehashed manual.......2007-09-02

I found this guide to be far too basic to be useful. Important topics are glossed over and they are covered in a sequence that will help a new user adapt to taking pictures. A more robust treatment of the cameras features or differences from point and shoot models would have been much more helpful. This is a book to buy used or get from the library.

Rob Long rose from staff writer to become co-producer of Cheers in its final season. When the show went off the air, he went from being top dog on a highly rated program to just another writer scrambling to get any project rolling. It wasn't pretty, but as Conversations with My Agent demonstrates, in hindsight at least, that's the hilarious reality of life in the wonderful world of the Hollywood sitcom. Suddenly thrown into the absurdity of Hollywood television development, Long and his writing partner find themselves with an office, an assistant, lots of cigars, and absolutely no idea what they are going to write. But that doesn't matter in Hollywood, where hype is more important than substance. Especially when you have a good agent. Here Long recants the true tale of his time in that limbo, from the wildly funny but awful meetings with studio executives to the unending string of phone calls with his self-absorbed agent, who is emblematic of the uniquely absurd chaos that is Hollywood.
Conversations with My Agent received terrific reviews.
Appeals to an enormous market including aspiring writers, screenwriters, producers, and directors.

Great book, written in an unusual witty style. He admits some of his luck to get in the business and how quickly it can be taken away. I recommend this book for anyone wanting to know more about the business AND be entertained.

5 out of 5 stars Funny and informative look at sitcom producing........1999-11-20

This quick read is full of funny scenes as the author labors to bring his sitcom onto the air. He has a rare (in Hollywood) modesty; he drops no names although he badmouths no one.

He doesn't even name the sitcom he managed to get on the air and which he discusses throughout the book (it was PIG STY, which ran on UPN for a season).

He's currently producing LOVE AND MONEY for CBS.

4 out of 5 stars Charming, clever quick read.......1999-03-08

Conversations with my agent succeeds on three levels: as a quick introduction to writing for television, as a morality tale about overnight success in Hollywood, and as a humor book. I've read almost everything there is to read about screenwriting, and this book was by far the most enjoyable in an overcrowded, turgid genre. It wasn't deep, but it sure was fun -- and informative.

    Book Description

The only major biography of Sam Peckinpah in print, David Weddle's If They Move...Kill 'Em! tells the wild story of Peckinpah's life with novelistic verve and does justice to one of the most important bodies of work in American cinema. Born into a clan of lumberjacks, ranchers, and frontier lawyers, David Samuel Peckinpah served in the Marines and then made his way to Hollywood, where he worked on a string of low-budget features before being hired as a writer for Gunsmoke in 1955. Quickly becoming the hottest writer in television, Peckinpah went on to direct a phenomenal series of features, including Ride the High Country, Straw Dogs, The Getaway, Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid, and The Wild Bunch. The life he led -- glamorous, wild, and beset by personal demons -- is as vivid as his films. A hopeless romantic and a grim nihilist, inspiration to such luminaries as DePalma, Scorsese, and Tarantino, Sam Peckinpah was an audacious American original. If They Move...Kill 'Em! is his wild and woolly story.

    4 out of 5 stars A Response.......2005-06-16

If you are interested in a detailed look at Sam Peckinpah's life and work, this book is a great starting point. I was particularly struck by Weddle's descriptions of Sam's creative process. Near the end of the book, the recurring theme of "he was drunk (and/or) high again," gets somewhat stale. But Weddle was only reporting fact. For any Peckinpah fan or even those just finding out about the director, this book is well-worth your time.

Last thing...Sorry, but I have to respond to a previous reviewer J. Austin. You lose all credibility as a reviewer when you criticize a biographer for not knowing enough about his subject when you--yourself--fail to spell the subject's name correctly. Secondly, the author's name is Weddle, not Waddle. Thirdly, Weddle hardly claims that Cross of Iron is embarassing. You quoted one word, "embarassing," and removed the entire context around it. Weddle stated that some scenes in Cross of Iron were embarassing (a result of Peckinpah's erratic behavior and inability to focus for a full day's work), but overall Weddle was complimentary of the film. It was Convoy that Weddle dismissed altogether--something I think all Peckinpah fans would agree with. And finally, Weddle apparently did meet Peckinpah on the set of The Osterman Weekend, as he points out in the introduction to Paul Seydor's The Western Films.

1 out of 5 stars peck himself would have shot the man.......2005-04-18

sorry, but i have to differ w/ the other posted 'reviews'.

this book is a sorry mass of sensationalism & subjective criticism.

any 'fimmaker' who thinks this books paints an accurate picture of the man does not truly understand him or his work.

most of the text regarding THE WILD BUNCH is ripped from other sources. extant descriptions read like a bad screenplay (or bill o'reilly's novel)

what really irks me is that waddle dismisses CROSS OF IRON as embarrassing--how many times did he actually WATCH THE FILM?
clearly, the fact that Welles commented on it means it is worth intensive viewing. waddle would rather talk about peckingpah's drinking and obvious malformations . . .

so beware, true peckingpah fan . . . nothing new from this compendium (and it is thick)

a pity the author never met the man he was paid to write about.

4 out of 5 stars Tragic examination of the Sam Peckinpah myth.......2003-05-11

David Weddle's fine biography of director Sam Peckinpah "If They Move...Kill'em!" is a harrowing book, detailing an extraordinary professional life wrought with alcoholism, drug addiction, rage and eventually paranoia. This book doesn't attempt to brush Peckinpah off the mountain he will forever possess, but it does detail his inspirations, influences and life-long battle with the demons within. Peckinpah was indeed tortured, an Ernest Hemingway or even Jack Kerouac of his time. He was also one heck of an SOB.

As a fan of Peckinpah's extaordinary films, including "The Wild Bunch," "Cross of Iron," "Straw Dogs" and "The Getaway," I was always perplexed by the erratic quality of the films later in his career and his eventual disappearance from the filmmaking scene. I suppose Weddle's work provides an uneasy answer to these questions, and I think his arguments about Peckinpah living the life of the characters he created in his films is valid.

Peckinpah's legend has always overshadowed Peckinpah's work, which is why such underrated jewels as "Noon Wine," "Junior Bonner" and "The Ballad of Cable Hogue" have been overlooked. I appreciate Weddle's attempts at exposing this myth, and revealing the troubled inspirations and obsessions of Peckinpah. I have problems with the way Weddle skims the surface of many of his films, rarely providing much critical insight or interpretation. But to do so would be treading on the groundbreaking territory of Garner Simmons' ultimate work "Peckinpah, A Portrait in Montage." Weddle should be applauded for avoiding areas that perhaps have already been covered.

To support his argument, Weddle ignores films from Peckinpah's resume, and makes several generalizations which are not entirely accurate. As the years go by, curious viewers will eventually realize that "Cross of Iron" was one of his great films, just as they will also begin to appreciate the gritty greatness of "The Getaway." These films will never serve as examples of the eroding talent of Peckinpah. Though I do agree with Weddle that "Bring Me the Head of Alfred Garcia, "The Osterman Weekend" and "Convoy" are hollow shells of a once-great talent.

"If They Move...Kill'Em!" is eye-opening and disturbing. It needed to be written. Many artists who rose to prominence during the 1960s and 1970s suffered a similar Peckinpah fate - cocaine addiction, alcoholism, a life of excess. That he was still able to make his films was a stunning achievement. That he took 10 years and 5 films off of his life (at the very least), is an American tragedy. Weddle has done a good job at revealing a man who not only was his own worst enemy, but who lived the ignoble life of the tortured artist to the extreme. To know Peckinpah the man, is to eventually understand his utterly unique films.

4 out of 5 stars Even the worst of us. . .Sometimes the worst most of all........2003-03-04

As I peddled my latest play, "Rust To Dust", I thought I was being pretty cute by describing it as "The Glass Menagerie meets The Wild Bunch". Working under the false pretense that my work uniquely combined the "hot ice and wonderous strange snow" of Williams' delicate and tender memory play with Peckinpah's bloody machismo driven Darwinistic fables, I thought I had something rare. Wrong.

According to Weddle, Sam Peckinpah himself had already beaten me to the punch.

In reading David Weddle's expansively researched and annotated biography of one of film's great colorful and tragic characters, I rediscovered the suprisingly sentimental and softly poetic side of Peckinpah.

Influenced tremendously by the symbollic stage poetry of Tennesse Williams (Sam was one of his champions!)along with the he-man adventures of John Ford, Howard Hawks and John Huston, Peckinpah brilliantly (admittedly only consistent in three films)managed to combine both seemingly polarized worlds.

Weddle really brings to light the complex character of Sam Peckinpah. Weddle pulls no punches and portrays the director as abusive, selfish, self destructive, malignant and paranoid. He also illuminates the softer, romantic side that created some legitimate and heartbreakingly penetrating works of art. Sam felt moved by poetry and the longing we all have to find the innocent and pure sides of our selves. He searched for salvation. Even in the hearts of deeply flawed and violent men. Knowing that he, like his famous protagnists, would only find it in honorable death.

Weddle does a fine and admirable job painstakingly finding the autobiographical currents running through all of Peckinpah's work.Weddle really shines as a film critic as he deconstructs all of Sam's work. He deftly balances negativity with effusiveness like a fine concert pianist. Like Williams' masterpieces, Peckinpah used his art to exorcise his demons.

It is so refreshing to learn that Peckinpah did not just educate himself on a diet of films, as so many young directors choose to limit themselves. He was a voracious reader of philosophy, history and literature. He loved the stage.

Many of Peckinpah's fans will already know much of the incidents present in the book, which will cause one to skim. But when Weddle works to humanize a deeply misunderstood artist, this book really shines.

    4 out of 5 stars "Let's Go!".......2001-07-05

If there has ever been a man for whom the phrase "consumed by his inner demons" was apt, that man was director Sam Peckinpah. And as David Weddle makes clear in this massive and massively detailed biography, Peckinpah's films bring many of these demons out to strut or cower on the silver screen. As Weddle remarks, almost everyone who loves film can remember the first time he saw THE WILD BUNCH, and yet, like almost all of Peckinpah's "serious" films other than RIDE THE HIGH COUNTRY, it was severely mutilated by studio meddling.

Not since Orson Welles has there been a famous director who had so much trouble with studio interference. And yet there were clearly times when some intelligent interference was more than justified... MAJOR DUNDEE falls completely to pieces in its "third half," to echo Tom and Ray of CAR TALK. THE BALLAD OF CABLE HOGUE is a giant void at its center... where there should be a love story, there's absolute vacuum, despite the talents of the performers. STRAW DOGS is repellant and unmemoriable despite the efforts of Dustin Hoffman. Sam turned every film in which he had much control into a psychodrama in which his characters wrestled with Sam's own problems. In this, he was a true auteur.

Weddle's research is overwhelming and his information about Peckinpah's childhood, college days and TV career is very enlightening... but he makes a major mistake in trying to relate these early experiences of Peckinpah in the most mechanical and naive way to Peckinpah's massive later psychological problems. We even listen in to some of Peckinpah's innermost thoughts, which is pretty preposterous in a supposed work of nonfiction.

And as another reviewer has noted, the list of influences on Peckinpah has a gigantic lapse--- other directors! Apart from a few random mentions of John Ford, there's hardly a hint that Peckinpah ever went to movies, or ever studied the works of other directors. Yet his early films burst onto the scene precisely when there was a directorial ferment almost without precedent in US and international film-making.

Peckinpah's film career is a sad and disturbing litany of maniacal career- and self-destruction. After alcohol withered his talents to a minimum, he discovered cocaine, and spent the rest of his short life in a moronic haze penetrated randomly by spurts of insane violence and agression... until his heart stopped abruptly. Ironically, in his decline he did a couple of by-the-numbers potboiler action films, and these were the only ones of his films that made real money for the studios. His best known, and best, films, like the WILD BUNCH, were box-office failures and not available for viewing even today in their uncut, unmutilated forms.

It's almost all here, a repellent and tragic story that only a Shakespeare could really do much justice to. Recommended, if you've ever wondered what kind of man could have had the vision embodied in the first 15 minutes or the final 15 minutes of THE WILD BUNCH.

        5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Supplement!!.......2007-08-31

        Hi There,

I have been reading RPG supplements for a long time. This one is a very handy supplement, even if you're not playing GURPS. This book is well researched, and seems to add a lot along the lines of Genetic Engineering, and Medicine to the game, while distilling materials into SJ Games Excellent 4th Edition.

I am not an author, but in the interests of disclosing my affiliation with the product, I was a Playtester of the product, prior to release.
I was very impressed with how this product turned out.

        1 out of 5 stars Excellent Suplimet.......2007-01-10

The new Bio-Tech is a wonderful addition to the fourth edition of Gurps. It covers rule for physical modifications of species as well as medicine, and the use of magic in the field of biology. Overall a excelent product

4 out of 5 stars Solid, Useful, Fun.......2006-11-29

Bio-Tech has been re-written and expanded for GURPS 4th Edition, and is physically impressive -- full colour, some reasonable art, twice as many pages. The text divides between theory and game-specific material.

The theory part is a fairly detailed and, so far as I know, up to date discussion of medical technology, selective breeding, genetic modifications to animals and plants, genetics, and cellular biology, with interesting speculations on gene therapies, genetic engineering and gross surgical alteration. Although interesting and instructive, the theory part is, from a game point of view, mostly fluff which explains the origin of some of the exotic advantages that characters can have in a hard-SF background.

Bio-Tech also touches on, then skirts around nanotechnology, presumably because this will be covered in more detail in the forth-coming Ultra-Tech, which is referenced throughout the volume.

The game-specific part lists genetic alterations to the human genome by tech level, surgical and therapeutic procedures to upgrade characters during play, provides new spells for magically based backgrounds, and provides rules for and examples of current and futuristic drugs and medical nanotech. It also features geneered animals and plants. The best and most immediately useful part is a chapter devoted to templates, human and para-human, that has been updated from the previous Bio-Tech book, and from Transhuman Space.

All the foregoing material is excellent stuff. Sadly, the final part of the book, which features two capsule backgrounds, is less good. One has clones of Alexander the Great ruling the world, the other is a short account of a slower-than-light colonisation fleet on its way to Lambda Serpentis. Neither of these parts is particularly well detailed, and I'd have preferred more information on bio-vehicles and bio-buildings. It is a minor gripe, though -- the meat of the book is more than worth the cover price.

5 out of 5 stars Are you still using last year's genes?.......2000-03-15

In this age of cloning and genetically altered crops it's hard to create a game book that won't seem hopelessly outdated by next year. David Pulver (GURPS Psionics, GURPS Vehicles and other) has done an excellent job with GURPS Bio-Tech! Rather than a simple list of advantages and disadvantages available, David takes advantage of existing rules to explain how select gene-mods would work in game mechanics.

Also covered are modifications to animals, plants, alien organisms and a extensive section on germ warfare. (Better make sure that the target genome doesn't appear in your population!) Addition information discusses specific changes that bio-modification could bring to a society.

This book is tailored to the GURPS game system, but with a bit of thought could be used for virtually any game system.

        Book Description

This best-selling introduction to the basic concepts of business communication is designed to improve the communication skills of entry-level managers and employees, and to serve as a reference for experienced professionals who wish to refresh or update their communication skills. Separate chapters on the communication process, organizational theory and culture, and interpersonal communication theory form the foundation for later discussions of critical listening, nonverbal communication, and obstacles to organizational communication. Two chapters are devoted to interviewing and two chapters examine small groups and leadership processes. Four final chapters offer guidance in informative and persuasive presentations, including full-chapter coverage of language and delivery and full-chapter coverage of the use of visual aids. A highly-visual 4-color design, pedagogy that is as practical as it is effective, and a CD-ROM with sample business and professional scenarios, will help your students engage with the material and apply the text's concepts outside the classroom.

3 out of 5 stars Don't Buy It if you don't need it.......2007-10-04

This is a good book, but I quickly realized I didn't need it. I have worked for 15 years in various office settings, and was able to complete many homework assignments without the assistance of this book. The only pieces that I had to focus on were the different office conflict scenarious listed through the book, but if your class does not focus on these entries, the book may not be too useful.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book .......2007-03-24

I obtained this book more than ten years ago when I took Ms. Hamilton's class at Tarrant County College. I still have it and refer to it from time to time. I also used the communication styles from this book for a team presentation in another class, at University of Phoenix, a few years ago. My teammate and I had both taken Ms. Hamilton's class at TCC (different years) and were very impressed with the book, had both held on to it and use it for reference in communication styles, resumes, interviews, and presentations. I highly recommend it.

3 out of 5 stars Great book, Bad CD-Rom.......2006-11-09

This book has some great information in it and it could stand alone very easily on its content. The CD-ROM, however, needs work. It is nearly impossible to install since it continually prompts you to install QuickTime 6.0, even if you already have it! The CD-ROM also requires you to turn off all of your virus protection to use it. I give the actual book a B+ and the CD-ROM a grade of D-.

Please let your instructor know of the CD-ROM issues so complaints can be filed with the publisher to get this fixed.

4 out of 5 stars Good Basic Information on Improving Communication .......2006-07-06

Communicating for Results is a good primer for the student or person who wants to improve his/her communication abilities.

        Among the topics covered include:

        1. Information on the different types of interviews.
        2. Nonverbal communication in organizations.
        3. How to be an effective listener (hint: we were born with one mouth and two ears!).
        4. How to deliver informative presentations.
        5. The types of visual aids and how to use them.
        6. How to make persuasive presentations.
        7. Participating in small groups.
        8. How to prepare for a presentation by researching, supporting, and delivering your ideas.

All in all, a good basic book for a 2 or 4-year school. The writing style is simple without being simplistic.

        Recommended.
