Customer Reviews:
Great reference book.......2007-09-04
I'm not a Wade collector but needed to research a 1950's figurine given to me by my aunt. I couldn't find anything like it on eBay, so I ordered this book. Within minutes of opening it I had found my piece and enough information about it to list it successfully for sale. As with any reference book on antiques and collectibles, the values must be treated with skepticism since prices change with shifts in collectors' interests. But for basic background information, including illustrations and dating of backstamps, it is excellent.
Great Wade Figurines reference book.......2006-11-04
I love the Wade Whimsey figurines, but I was flying blind until I got this book. I am now a much more informed collector. I highly recommend this book to any collector.

EXQUISITE!.......2007-02-07
The Shoeniverse Calendars are absolutely beautiful! They are even more beautiful in person than the picture shows. The quality of the printing is very nice and the Shoe Pictures are lovely and funny. I will be proud to give these to my friends as gifts. I can hardly wait to see the next one!
Unusual Creative Calendar.......2007-01-11
We enjoyed this calendar so much, we ordered several of these "Shoeinverse 2007 Desk Calendars" to give as Christmas gifts for special friends. They were a wonderful hit with every single one. The themes for the "shoes" on each page are very creative and the execution of each full-color illustration is wonderful. The calendar is a weekly, with plenty of spaces for notes and appointments, as well as a "shoe image" on each page. I would recommend these calendars to anyone who is looking for an unusual and delightful gift for friends. By all means, treat yourself to one as well.
So glad I found this unique gift!.......2006-12-03
I love getting my family calendars for Christmas but it's rough finding ones that aren't the same ol' pictures of Italy, Monet paintings, celebrity pin-ups, etc... I'm so glad I found this one! I know a bunch of my friends and family would really love these paintings!
A Classy & Entertaining Addtion to Any Woman's Business Attire.......2006-09-27
Jennifer has created a classy way for today's independent business woman to share her appointment book with clients and other professionals she encounters each day. What a great conversation starter! What Realtor can resist one of March's shoes, "Soled", which depicts a for sale sign as a heal, with keys on a gold loop for the ankle strap and a white picket fence for the buckle? Or the advid golfer... "Shoe Wanna Play a Round?" with all the golf tees, holes, plaid, etc., Or my favorite, the "Moo Shoe" where a cow with a leg as a heel, rope and bell for ankle strap, is completed with utters! Such imagination! Fantastic for those of us who need some levity with our days! Thank you for the weekly approach to your calendar. It will get much use with my home business and I am convinced my clients will enjoy making appointments while admiring your artistry and humor.
An amazing gift - several steps above a standard calendar.......2006-09-01
This calendar feels more like a coffee table book than the average calendar, with vibrant and clever images that make it impossible not to turn the page to see what the next one is. Each image has a clever pun relating to shoes (A nun-themed "Mother Shoeperior" cleverly has a ruler as the heel of the shoe). Images like a black-and-white "Moo-Shoe", a patriotic "Shoe-S.A." and currency-themed "Shoe Me The Money" join other images timed with relevant calendar events: October's "Dracshoela", and for December a Hannukkah-themed "Shoedaica" and Christmas-time "Muletide Greetings". It's a great gift for friends, family and co-workers or anyone who loves shoes, fashion or just a clever joke. The book format conceals the spiral and its raised/beaded images on the front cover convey that this is much more than an average calendar.

Book Description
Supernatural private eye Cal McDonald thinks he's seen it all, at least until a couple of rampaging rednecks bust through his door hootin' about demonic possessions. Thus begins Cal's most spine-chilling (and side-splitting) case yet, as these Beverly Hellbillies take him down a trail of terror into the heart of a Southern California backwater brimming with monsters and mullets. Can Cal and his living-dead partner Mo'Lock save an entire town from the nastiest spirit this side of the river Styx? Will Cal's girlfriend Sabrina forgive him for forgetting Valentine's Day before they're overcome by a demonic horde? And just how did little Billy Ray end up with a portal to Hell in his bedroom? All will be revealed in this collection courtesy of uber-scribe Steve Niles and fantastically frightful art-meister Kelley Jones.
Customer Reviews:
Graphic SF Reader.......2007-09-04
Cal and Mo start off with taking out a mummy in a museum, breaking a few things in a process.
When a dumb kid's parents bring him to Cal for help, he thinks he has solved the problem with a few minor demons, although not the forgetting Valentine's day girlfriend problem.
That wasn't all, though, a rather nasty succubus is still around.

Book Description
Friends are great. They won't tell anyone that you color your hair, you always have someone to complain to, and a friendship is less likely to break up than a marriage. So say Lisa Birnbach, Ann Hodgman, and Patricia Marx. The trio has teamed up once again for the newest addition to the highly successful 1,003 series, 1,003 Great Things About Friends. This hilariously funny book includes tidbits such as: Her clothes are your clothes. In a real emergency, she'll lend you her spouse. Someone to stalk your ex for you. Someone to glop on your henna paste/hair color/sunless suntan lotion. Someone who pretends she doesn't notice your "Gucci" bag was manufactured in the Ivory Coast. At your wedding, your friend will talk to your great-uncle about his cataract operation so no one else has to. You can call a friend up on a Saturday night and ask her to the movies that very same night.

Book Description
"David James has written a comprehensive book that will excite both scholars and general readers. His political contextualization of the avant-garde cinema in America is superbly researched, lucidly written, and powerfully argued."--P. Adams Sitney, author of "Visionary Film: The American Avant-Garde" From Stan Brakhage and Andy Warhol to the underground cinema and political films, David James gives a thorough account of the growth, development, and decay of nonstudio film practices in the United States between the late fifties and the mid-seventies. Unlike other scholars who discuss these practices as totally separate from Hollywood, James argues that they were developed in various kinds of dialogue or negotiation with the commercial film industry. He also demonstrates that the formal properties of the films were determined not simply by aesthetic considerations but by the functions the films served in the various subcultures and dissident groups that produced them. After an opening chapter on film hermeneutics, the book gives detailed accounts of the contrary projects of two exemplary filmmakers: Stan Brakhage, who pioneered an artisanal, domestic film practice, and Andy Warhol, who redirected such a practice toward the film industry. James then discusses the beats and other idealist countercultures, the social groups that formed around civil rights and the Vietnam War, artists who shunned social involvement for pure film ("structural" film), and finally the women's movement.

Book Description
This book explores the work of three significant American women composers of the twentieth century: Ruth Crawford, Marion Bauer and Miriam Gideon. It offers information on both their lives and music and skillfully interweaves history and musical analysis in ways that both the specialist and the more general reader will find compelling. Ellie Hisama suggests that recognizing the impact of a composer's identity on the music itself imparts valuable ways of hearing and understanding these works and breaks important new ground toward constructing a feminist music theory.
Customer Reviews:
Interesting if dry and incomplete.......2005-04-22
Asian-American Hisama analyzes only seven post-tonal works by female modernist composers Crawford, Bauer, and Gideon, and those who appreciate their music should enjoy this book. She applies formalist analysis (statistics and counting, considered objective and scientific), inspired and then interpreted by what is known of the cultural, historical, and personal context of the composer in question. This controversial approach is often known as cultural analysis (considered postmodern), and, though you may disagree, the final reading of the pieces are compelling. For example, she suggest an alternate interpretation for the first work she close reads, Crawfords String Quarter 3rd movement, that is based on cyclic registral weaving of voices rather than the prevalent reading of the movement as consisting of one sound mass which builds to a climax and subsides. Though the reasoning may be speculative, a performance inspired by this would be perfectly valid and bring to light new aspects of the work (which may then inspire new analysis). Though Hisma quite clearly explains the biographical or cultural details and then clearly explains the formal details after a brief explination of their connection, she does not then go back over and reshow the connection once the formal details are explained.

Customer Reviews:
Kick your defense up a notch ..........2006-12-24
You should already be an above average player before tackling this.
-Heavy focus on signaling.
-When to mislead partner on defense.
- Partnership quizzes - these alone are woth the price of the book
Many interesting examples of creative suit preference signals.......2006-05-24
Like many books on defense this book covers the basics of Signaling (Attitude, Count, Suit Preference). It also expands on these and has numerous examples of creative suit preference signals, such as when Attitude and Count are known or irrelavent using teh spot cards for signals. There is a nice section on Deceptive Declarer play, or how to mask the defenders signals. The sections have a number of examples and then some problems for the reader. These problems are not trivial, but they are not super hard either.
This is a good book to read after you have read Eddie Kantars Modern and Advanced Bridge Defense, and Mike Lawrences Dynamic Defense.
If you are not already a solid defender would not start with this book, instead start with Kantar.
An excellent book on a vital part of the game.......2004-11-08
If one browses through a collection of books on bridge, what will one find? There will be some books about bridge matches, showing how some great players made some great plays (often as declarer). There will be some books on bidding systems and conventions. Some books on declarer play. And, of course, not even last and certainly not least, a few books about defense. But even these books are often oriented towards individual defensive skills. They are geared towards the player who can walk into a game and score well with a pickup partner.
But that leaves out the partnership aspect of the game.
Many of the books that emphasize partnership deal primarily with what system to play, what conventions to play, and how to test one's partnership's ability to arrive at good contracts.
However, there's a big need to defend well. That means agreeing on what signals are to be used and when they are to be used, and it means practicing them! And this well-written book will be of good use for your partnership if you go through it together.

Communicating effectively--with a significant other, a roomful of colleagues, or an auditorium packed with strangers--can challenge even the most articulate. In Speak from the Heart, Emmy-winning broadcaster Steve Adubato maintains that success comes from the direct emotional connections you make with your audience. Using his own experiences, as well as those of a range of notables from Oprah Winfrey to Colin Powell, he offers specific ways to develop that bond in circumstances where it matters most. Adubato shows how public speakers can get a handle on their audience and their message, determine their key themes, and then outline them to encourage as interesting and engaging a delivery as possible. He explains how "talking without speaking" plays a vital role in communicative settings and offers tips on body language (gesture toward someone with an open hand, palm up, rather than a pointed index finger), first impressions ("the level of confidence you have is first seen in the way you hold your body"), and active listening (eye contact, gestures, and smiles all convey your interest). Adubato additionally applies these principles to casual business encounters, leadership situations, workplace teams, communication technology, customer service, and the particular considerations that gender often interjects. "Being a truly great communicator is not simply about being articulate," he writes. "It's about who can make an audience care about the message and find the words that touch not only the intellect but also the heart." His precise advice and suggested exercises should help anyone improve this critical skill. --Howard Rothman

Steve Adubato's life experiences, both professional and as a husband, son, brother, and father, have taught him invaluable lessons about the power of personal, sincere communication. In Speak from the Heart, he demonstrates that being a truly great communicator is not simply about being articulate or being a ""good talker."" It is not about fancy visuals and PowerPoint presentations, or hard-core sales pitches, or even who has the most facts, figures, and technical wizardry. What really counts is making an authentic connection with other people that comes not merely from the intellect but from the heart. If you want to make a lasting impact, Dr. Adubato shows you how to engage people through empathy and understanding, how to be a great listener, and how to make an audience -- whether one, one hundred, or one thousand people -- care about you and your message. He helps you to rely less on written speeches, teleprompters, and index cards full of too much forgettable information, and learn, instead, how to tell a compelling story and create excitement and enthusiasm. You will learn, for example, how to: Lecture less and engage more Communicate under pressure Make effective use of eye contact Develop a conversational style Inspire in a human, personal way Become comfortable with your core message Speak from the Heart will not only make it easier for you to communicate your message without being ignored or misunderstood; it will also improve your relationships with other people and help you to become more productive at work -- with more satisfaction and less stress.
Customer Reviews:
Heartfelt Thanks.......2007-04-18
As a professional speaker, I long ago learned the secret of "speaking from the heart." And, most of the better books on public speaking do in fact make this among their most important points. But, by using this critical point as his book title, Steve Adubato has brought this important concept front and center. Loud and clear!
One of the things I liked most about this book was its excellent organization. The author connects with his great title by devoting the first part of the book to "Communicating with Passion." Then, the author drills down on the specific skills that support ones ability to speak with passion.
In an age where so many books are not well organized and therefore tax the reader with developing ones own analytical framework for the subject, this book lays out a sound framework for being a great communicator. The framework is then well supported by both theory, and anecdotes that serve to effectively drive home the learning point.
At the risk of being picky, my sole disappointment is that the author acknowledges some leading self improvement greats (e.g., Dyer, Robbins, et al) as among the very best speakers, but regretfully never shares what he thinks makes each of them such a standout. Is the only learning point from these greats that they speak from the heart? Personally, I believe each of those listed draws on many of the other points made by Adubato. Given the authors clear expertise, I would have benefited even more had he shared his insights into what makes those he learned from so great.
MMMMmmmm...so Steve, is that the sequel? "Speakers from the Heart"?? I am ready to preorder that gem.
