Book Description
If you plan a trip to see firsthand the glories of Yellowstone National Park, Pomegranate's Yellowstone Handbook may be an essential addition to your suitcase, backpack, or car's glove compartment. The second in Susan and Phil Frank's ultimately usable "insider's guides" to America's parks, the book is organized in a question-and-answer format that answers such commonly-posed queries as: ""Help! We only have one day to visit--what should we see and do?", "We really want to see wildlife--any suggestions?", "Can you recommend a nice, easy day hike" (or, for the more adventurous: What are some great butt-kicking hikes?). Livened by the entertaining work of cartoonist Phil Frank, a "quick reference" section at the book's conclusion gives park rules, historical background, a list of licensed tour operators, campers' checklists, an area telephone directory, and more.
Paperbound book, 240 pages, original cartoon on almost every page, size: 5 5/8 x 8 5/8".
Customer Reviews:
Limited guidance and not very readable.......2004-04-12
I was very disappointed in this book, especially since all the reviews were highly favorable when I ordered it. The only redeeming value of this book was that adding it to my order had put me over the order total required to qualify for a $5 discount. I would have sent it back but the refund would not have been worth the bother.
The book is primarily in question and answer format. Most of the answers range in length between one paragraph and a couple of pages. This isn't too bad when using the book for reference but it does not make for great readability.
My biggest complaint is that the book claims to be "an insider's guide" but it provides limited guidance. For example, there are ten pages of outfitters listed. But for the most part the only guidance to them is the category the outfitter is listed under. There is no information on what the differences among the outfitters are as far as what they offer or the quality of their services. A couple of outfitters are mentioned in a general description of guide services, but again there are no reasons given for why you would want to select one of them.
Another example of this lack of guidance is the description of the lodging available in the park. The descriptions are very limited and would not be enough to make an informed decision on where to stay.
I later purchased "Yellowstone - Grand Teton Handbook" by Don Pitcher (Moon Handbooks). I found this book to be much more helpful. Instead of giving a long list of outfitters, Pitcher provides descriptions and opinions about some of the outfitters. He also provides a much better description of what the different lodging options are like. These two examples are representative of the general difference between these books. As an added bonus, "Yellowstone - Grand Teton Handbook" also provides much more information about the Grand Tetons and other areas around Yellowstone.
There are better choices.......2003-08-01
We just returned from a three-week cross-country trip, with a four day stop in Yellowstone. This book was o.k. to read before the trip to familiarize yourself with the park, but was useless as a reference guide once we were there. We basically gave up on it and used our Frommers Guide to the Western National Parks. The index is incomplete, the maps are cartoonish and difficult to read, and some of the explanations in the question-answer format with"ranger Norm" made me feel as if they were questioning my intelligence. My husband and I both couldn't believe they showcase this book prominently in the Yellowstone visitor's Centers!
Easy to read but still has all the info.......2002-11-18
The way the books of this series work is that they took a guide for new rangers in Yosemite with the 100 or so most frequently asked questions, and wrote their own answers for each park. So in each book the questions are very similar but the answers might be very different.
It's a great format because it makes for easy reading beforehand, but it's also quick as a reference when you're there because they're arranged in an intelligent order. There's also a huge reference section at the end with lists, copies of permit forms, and so forth. So the thing to do is read the FAQ before you leave but bring the book and refer to it once you're there.
I've only been to Yellowstone once and had no idea where to stay, or which hotels were near which sites and so forth. This book really cleared it up for me and we had a great time.
The only yellowstone book you'll need.......2002-09-25
Don't let the cover fool you. This book is great. Lots of details. Great recommendations on hotels to stay outside the park when the inside ones are book. My niece and I had a blast reading it as we went. We even ran into a bear jam, you'll have to read the book to find out what that is all about. If your looking for a book to simplfy your life and make this trip the best. Buy it! Don't let the cartoons fool you this book has all the details in great form for all. Buy it before you leave so you know where your going. THE BEST, ENJOY.
A must for first time visitors.......2001-08-06
This book helped me plan the trip, and served as a great guide once we arrived in Yellowstone.

The Butt Hello - The Perfect Coffee Table Gift.......2006-11-22
I've bought several copies of this book and given it to cat loving friends as going away gifts, B-day gifts and just "cheer-up" gifts. It's a perfect little gift that every cat lover can totally relate to!
A great book for cat lovers and also cat haters.......2005-07-01
If your cat has annoying or endearing behaviors then you may see some of them in this great book. The simple folk art illustrations of a cat giving you a "butt salute" or of drinking from a toilet (Perrier anyone?) or of covering your head while you are trying to sleep will make you laugh out loud. A great gift for anyone with a cat. I particularly liked the page with the cat knocking off christmas tree ornaments, which happened in our house one year. I have never had one gnaw on my toes, but I always kept them covered around my cat.

Book Description
Read about the antics of the Egyptian Pharoah who was a serial castrator (his collection totaling over 13,000); about the ancient Syrian queen who created ‘a multitude of eunuchs’ through her jealousy; about the paramedic who regularly fattened her dog up with hearty meals of adolescents’ testicles; and about the scissor-happy wife who cut off her husband’s prize asset and threw it out of the window, only to have a duck pick it up in its bill and waddle off with it...
Did you know?
- In medieval times one of the few grounds for divorce was sexual incompetence, which had to be demonstrated before a court
- In Romania men can be refused entry into the Orthodox priesthood if their members "don’t reach the minimum length set down in the rules"
- In 1980, the hoteliers of Majorca claimed that honeymooners were costing them over $1 1/2 million a year in beds damaged by their energetic amorous activities
- Dr. John Harvey Kellogg proclaimed his first breakfast cereal product as an antidote to masturbation
The Book of Weird Sex is full of quirky sexual trivia, both ancient and modern.

Not a Smooth Read.......2007-07-30
While the topics are no doubt interesting, and surely enough to keep you chugging along (at least for curiosity's sake), the author's writing style certainly makes it difficult. It's seems his abundance of "weird" information was a bit too overwhelming for him, as he juts off into other topics (under the same heading) without a smooth (or often times, any) transition, leaving you wondering how you got there, or what it has to do with the previous paragraph, or even sentence. His writing style is also rather simplistic, and each topic rarely has more than a paragraph or two.
He doesn't have the best handle on proper punctuation/sentence structure, either (which exacerbates the confusion), nor does he always use the correct words (re: "prostrate" instead of "prostate"). Ultimately, not a good book. If, after editing this, I could change my rating to one star, I would.
EFIT: If I could change my review to one star, I'd do so. This guy didn't even know the difference between "prostrate" and, what he *meant*, "prostate."

Immoral Tales: European Sex & Horror Movies, 1956-1984
ASIN: 0312187483 |
Amazon.com
"Sometimes it feels like there's nothing left to discover. Bookshelves bend under the weight of tomes devoted to all things 'cult,' 'B,' or obscure. Films you might once have crossed town to see now turn up on new video labels every week. [But] for those who still value the shock of the new, the special kind of thrill that comes from confronting previously unsung greatness, ... there are plenty of strange new worlds left to explore.... Mondo Macabro is a peek into the treasure trove of fifty years of film from around the world. We've sifted through the dross and picked out the dusty jewels."
Those who enjoy horror movies, and bizarre movies of all types, will find Peter Tombs's Mondo Macabro: Weird and Wonderful Cinema Around the World a welcome companion on the shelf next to their (and Cathal Tohill's) Immoral Tales: European Sex & Horror Movies 1956-1984. With the help of three other writers (Giovanni Scognamillo, Diego Curubeto, and David Wilt), Tombs gives us an overflowing cornucopia of well-written descriptions of movies made in Hong Kong, the Philippines, Indonesia, India, Turkey, Brazil, Argentina, Mexico, and Japan. Each section provides film-historical background on the individual countries and studios, a handy folklore primer on the indigenous monsters and myths that appear in the films, plenty of movie stills and poster art, and portraits of important personalities such as Brazil's José Mojica Marins (creator of the infamous evil persona Zé do Caixão, a.k.a. Coffin Joe).
As horror-fantasy writer Ian McDowell writes, "The sheer range of bizarre cinema that Tombs covers is amazing. My only serious cavil involves his first chapter, one of three on Hong Kong cinema. I know that he leaves the mainstream fare to others, but he still makes some odd statements about the timing of the golden age of Chinese martial arts films."
Best of all, Tombs prizes the pungent, if sometimes raw, flavors of individual creativity and local traditions, so his book is especially helpful for distinguishing between horror films that are unique to a country or region, those that are hybrids of Western models and local themes, and those that are mere copies of Western films. Mondo Macabro also includes top 10 lists from five world cinema experts, tips on where to find the videos, and an index of film titles. --Fiona Webster
Customer Reviews:
Mondo Macabro go go!.......2001-11-19
If I had the money, I would travel to Asia, South America, and Eastern Europe to learn about each region's culture. I wouldn't go to museums, but rather to the movies, especially the exploitative, sexual, and violent ones. Since I'm short on funds, I decided to read Pete Tomb's Mondo Macabro: Weird & Wonderful Cinema Around the World instead. For $18.95, I developed my own case of culture shock by reading about the B movies of Japan, Turkey, the Philippines, China, Brazil, Mexico, Argentina, India, and Indonesia. What we have here is an attention-grabbing introduction to an entire world of films that are full of bizarre sexuality, brutality, and horror. Tomb focuses on how these films react to, and contribute to, their particular culture's makeup and character. The film business in Istanbul, Turkey, for example, didn't get going until the '50s, when they made Drakula Istanbul'da (Dracula in Istanbul). To say the special effects were low-tech would be putting it mildly; to show fog in a graveyard, the crew lay on the ground and puffed on lots of cigarettes. After that success, there were films such as Tarzan in Istanbul and The Invisible Man in Istanbul -- there's nothing like national pride. Mondo Macabro concentrates not only on film lore but also on the literature and legends of these nations. It is rare to get a book on this subject that is so well written and informative for even the amateur film fanatic. Sadly, due to distribution and business practices, most people won't be able to see films such as India's Kali, The Bloodthirsty Bride of Shiva, Japan's Rapeman, or the Turkish version of Star Wars. So our alternative is this wonderful, well-researched book featuring stills from enchanting films I have never seen and, most likely, never will.
A Film Junkie's Dream!.......2000-11-21
If you're in a movie rut and aren't interested in anything at your local video store, I implore you to check out Mondo Macabro! This book is fantastic! Its full of the strangest movies ever made throughout the world. Brazil, Mexico, Japan, Hong Kong, India, you name it and its in here. Peter Tombs covers all bases, including the countries' film history and cultural practices, in order to give readers a better understanding as to why certain films were made. And some of it is still unexplainable! He even goes so far as to lead readers in the direction on where to find the films. I've picked up a few of the films in this book and I've been changed. Mondo Macabro raises the bar that film books must hurdle in order to be deemed thourough. If you're a fan of b-movies or in the mood for a total change of pace, Mondo Macabro can help you. This is a film junkie's dream! Also, be sure to check out Immoral Tales, also by Tombs, which covers European films.
Foreign Film as you have never seen it before!.......2000-04-10
When most people think of foreign film it's usualy something very european, more then likely french. Not that there is anything wrong with that but here's something you don't see everyday. In Pete Tombs book MONDO MACABRO we see the great "trash" films and filmmakers for the world. My favorite in the book and on the screen is a man who's character is known as "Ze do Caixao" in his home land of Brazil but "Coffin Joe" to you english speaking folks. Jose Mojica Marins is "Ze" the "evil" undertaker of his own written, directed and produced films. Check out "At Midnight I'll Take Your Soul Away" from 1963, it's a masterpiece.
Tombs' book goes to all areas of the globe to find you the best and the strangest films you will ever see. Including a Turkish version of "Star Trek". The book is well written, has many original photos and posters arts so you can get a sense of what it take to make these kinds of films. Now the only challange is trying to find them on video.
Think you have seen everything, think again, check out MONDO MACABRO!

REQUIRED if you play the openings featured (see below).......2007-03-30
The title is rather deceptive; this is not a general middlegame/endgame book, rather it concerns the following:
I.French Tarrasch with 3...c5. When White plays exd5, Black replies ...exd5.
II.French Tarrasch with 3...c5. White White plays exd5, Black replies ...Qxd5.
III."Almost Symmetrical Endgames," for example 1.c4 c5 2.Nf3 Nf6 3.Nc3 d5 4.cxd5 Nxd5 5.e4 Nxc3 6.dxc3 Qxd1+ 7.Kxd1.
IV.Endgames from Hedgehog Formations.
IF you play any of these systems, or would like to, this book really does explain the "strategic themes" excellently. This book is dated (late 1980s), but the overall themes have not changed since then.
Mednis goes into some variations, but only so that they illustrate the play. Also included are many game examples of fairly strong GMs playing games featuring these lines.
Highly, Highly Recommended!
