Book Description
This study aims to clarify Venetian Quattrocento Orientalism, which affected Durer and thus Northern Europe, and to define the sources and practitioners of its Oriental motifs.
At the end of the fifteenth century a large number of paintings were produced in Venice that depict exotic animals and figures set against the backdrop of Oriental architecture.
It was Europe's earliest attempt to portray Muslims in a Muslim habitat, but it was more than a vague and ill-informed evocation of the East. Realistic in many of their details, these Orientalist pictures reflect the Serenissima's political and mercantile links with the fifteenth century Islamic Empires of the Eastern Mediterranean.

Big Monkey's Compact Disc Price Guide: A Cd Collector's Handbook.......2007-01-16
I purchased this for my son for a Christmas gift. He was very happy with it.
A much need book with usual first edition problems.......2006-01-07
This is a much needed book for the collecting community and I am glad that someone has attempted to tackle this subject. For a first edition it is a good start. Hopefully future editions will be more complete like the Tim Neely Goldmine price guides. I believe that the author has biten off more than he could chew trying to list both domestic and import compact discs. A few examples of what I was looking for that are not represented are as follows: If you want to know if your original Paul McCartney "Tug of War" CD on Columbia is worth more than the current Capitol version you will only see the Capitol version listed. The Columbia one sells for a premium on Ebay. The Motown Two-fers that MCA put out in the late 80's are also collectible and not listed. Some popular rock artists are well represented while others especially Soul are not. Like all price guides the values are subjective. Currently available compact discs have their full retail price listed which makes their value over inflated. If this is going to be the book of record then collecter's input for future edtions will make this book a must-have.

REVIEW FROM VARIETY.......2001-10-18
If you're keen to shoot a digital video feature and make contacts, check out this book for hot tips, horror stories and useful phone numbers. . . Shari Roman, film editor for Flaunt magazine, swings open production company doors to investigate the past, present and future of digital video cinema and looks at the vague possibility of film's decline. Reading something like a thoughtful film professor's stapled-together classroom packet, the book compiles essays by and interviews with an impressive list of producers, directors, cinematographers and critics (Jean-Luc Godard, Wim Wenders, Jim Jarmusch, Lars von Trier, and Variety's own Todd McCarthy, to name a few) . . . Roman's writing style is admirably enthusiastic, and she asks questions in rapid-fire rhythm . . . This collage of opinions is a pioneering survey of the inchoate digital landscape. Roman promises film is far from finished, but she schools ... that DV is cheaper, holds up longer on movie screens and is getting better all the time.
FROM THE PUBLISHER.......2001-10-12
Los Angeles, CA - We live in a Digital Babylon, a world saturated by hard data, new technologies, insatiable for the pleasures of fresh images of ourselves and our universe.
With an irreverent intro by Dogme bad boy Harmony Korine, a perceptive riff on the DV future from Jean-Luc Godard and tasty details from the eccentric personal life of Lars von Trier, Shari Roman delivers a vibrant exploration of the influence of Dogme 95 style filmmaking and the new technologies that have brought film and video making within everyone's reach.
Conceived in 1995, Dogme 95 has become a cinematic movement and revolutionary cause, kicking up more media fuss than any film "movement" since the French and Czech New Waves, and the American underground movement of the '60's. In a series of interviews and essays this entertaining, insightful account on Dogme's impact on digital filmmaking introduces the personalities and philosophical scuffles behind the doctrine. Then connects it to American DV filmmaking through the POV of key players such as Wim Wenders, Thomas Vinterberg, Miquel Arteta, Scott Macaulay (producer of julien donkey-boy) and Rick Linklater.
Roman is the film editor of Flaunt Magazine & the L.A. correspondent for The Face (UK). Her documentary short, on the Dogme of Lars von Trier, "Lars from 1- 10" premiered at Sundance 1999 and has since screened at film festivals around the world.

The Composer's Advocate: A Radical Orthodoxy for Musicans
ASIN: 157467028X |
Book Description
As music director of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, conductor and music consultant to the Metropolitan Opera, and guest conductor of the great orchestras of Europe and America, Erich Leinsdorf (1912--1993) served as a conscience for two generations of musicians. These previously unpublished essays include his final reflections on the contemporary musical world.
Customer Reviews:
a definite "grabber".......1997-09-27
Having just received a reviwer copy of "Erich Leinsdorf On Music", I did something very dangerous. To my time, that is. I opened the book and was swept away by Leinsdorf's insights and conversational, free-flowing style of writing. Those music lovers who know Maestro Leinsdorf as one of the finest conductors of the century without knowing his writings are missing an essential part of his genius. This book is a collection of his verious essays on music but, unlike many other essay collections, these are arranged as subchapters under common headings. There is a natural flow and rhythm as if they were written as a continuous chapter rather than spread over several years. Naturally, I don't agree with everything Maestro Leinsdorf writes but who says we have to and why quibble over small points? Here is one of the great figures of 20th century music sharing the benefit of many years on the podium with us so I, for one, will gladly sit back and enjoy this book. It's a pity he didn't write one on Mahler's music. It would've been a masterpiece. Unfortunately, his earlier books, "Cadenza" and "The Composer's Advocate", seem to be out of print but maybe Amadeus can help out (hint, hint). Bottom line: this is a book that belongs on the shelf of any lover of great music and one that, like Leinsdorf's recordings, will be returned to as an old friend. Get it, give it, or put it on your holiday list.

In Conquer the Crash, Robert Prechter explains why he thinks the boom times are behind us. Based on his interpretation of the Elliott Wave principle (an idea premised on the notion that mass investor psychology is what really drives markets), Prechter believes that the U.S. economy is about to enter into a deflationary depression that few investors are prepared to deal with. In making his case, Prechter assembles an impressive array of data that in essence suggests that the bill for the last 10 years of market excess is about to come due. The second half of the book shows how to avoid becoming "a zombie-eyed victim of the depression" and offers advice on protecting one's assets in a deflationary environment (cash is king). If there's any good news in the future that Prechter sees coming (other than how to avoid it), it's that all-out depressions don't last very long. Conquer the Crash should appeal to gloom-and-doom investors and to those desperately looking for a safe haven from the uncertainties of today's markets. --Harry C. Edwards
Book Description
"The forecasts in Conquer the Crash continue to be uncannily accurate. Look out below as the rest become reality." Jim Puplava, host, financialsense.com ____________
A year after Conquer the Crash published, stock markets around the world fell precipitously. The rebound of the last six months has convinced some that we are leaving the bear market behind and entering a bull market and economic boom. In this expanded and updated Second Edition of the New York Times bestseller, Prechter returns to provide answers as to what lies ahead. He provides updated economic and market analysis, shows you how to take steps to protect, survive, and prosper and asks, contrary to what most market analysts believe, whether the depression is truly at an end? The expanded and updated edition includes a new 50 page supplement plus current Safety Sources. Written by a leading expert on investing in bear markets, this book is a timely and insightful guide for anyone looking to protect and make money in today's financial markets.
Praise for the first edition:
"...I am saying that this is 'must reading' for anyone who has even the slightest interest in the stock market and his or her own investing."
Richard Russel, Dow Theory Letters
"Prechter's understanding of technical, contrary and economic analysis is exceptional"
Lawrence G. MacMillan, The Option Strategist
"All investors imbued with the idea that stocks should be bought and held forever should read this book."
Charlie Minter and Marty Weiner, Comstock Partners, Inc.
"Conquer the Crash provides disciplined investors with a map, compass and survival guide. Don't leave home without it."
Henry Van der Eb, The P.Q. Wall Forecast
"A compelling exposition of how both the mechanics and the psychology of the business cycle can be encapsulated in market analysis."
Sean Corrigan, Capital-Insight.com
"Prechter knows the facts like few others. Read this forceful argument carefully. It can save you from financial loss."
James R. Cook, President, Investment Rarities
"...required reading for anyone who wants to enhance his or her prospects for the years ahead."
Timothy Bost, Editor, Financial Cycles

Outstanding.......2007-01-10
THis book is simply outstanding. A must read for anybody that cares about their financial future. Well written, super informative, and exciting reading.
Buy it!.......2006-12-28
Excellent book. Every person in possession of wealth, large or small, should purchase this book. Well done!
Good to read but be aware.......2005-09-22
If you are an experienced reader of financial publications and would like to read a view that is very different but presented with arguments and reasoning - this is a good book to read. A different view will likely shine a new light to known facts and pull some new ones that you have not considered recently. Even if you don't agree with the author, such reading has high value if facts are presented well. These are. You should keep in mind though, that author stresses that he foresaw long bull market before many, knew its characteristics, etc. But his own advisory service (tracked by Hulbert Financial Magazine) has very poor results. He is way behind broad market on a "regular investors" portfolio and dramatically negative in his "trader" portfolio. His performance looks very consistent bad during a good 20 years period. So, in fact, you would look like a true hero if you took all his "trader" advises and did just opposite! Note, that it is not just stock picking that is bad. Timing-only returns are even worse. So, remember, your brain cannot retire yet. Given that - it is a good reading, good perspective to consider.
If you are just starting to read financial publications - you might not appreciate the fact that there are thousands of financial publishers at any given time. All, yes, all of them are smart. Really smart. Finance has so many dimensions that it is possible to argue any number of views at the same time - all well grounded and reasoned. When you are starting, anything you read impresses you, looks totally convincing and even evident. Moreover, you will have a feeling that you can make a confident use of newly acquired knowledge. This is why it is NOT good first reading for you. Before you have your brain active - you need some measured background reading. It is simply NOT POSSIBLE to judge from common sense - it takes decades to build common sense in finance. This is a radical view, expressed by rather radical author, practicing non-scientific ideas. His ideas cannot be proven or disproven because he talks about things that happens ones in a century or once in 3 centuries! So, keep in mind a simple fact - this particular man was right big time once but he himself was not able to make any use of his seeing into future. His theory was with him all along but help none either. In fact, you were better off not hearing his advices! I'd keep doing just that. This does not mean I dislike (or like) his prognosis. He may be right and he maybe wrong. He might be right in direction but wrong in the extent. Or any combinations. There is nothing in his book or in his performance so far to make it anything but a pure guess.
This book has a Fundamental problem.......2005-06-11
This book is well written. Disregarding the chapter on deflation, it is very clear too (Prechter seems to be a very clear expositor).
The problem is that Prechter tries to convince the reader that the timing of his analysis is right and inexorable. He wrote "No Alternative Scenarios" in the book.
Someone that believed in the book lost some good bull markets. For example, several stocks (siderurgical group, for example) in BRAZIL were up by a factor from 4 to 10. Have you imagined to put US$ 40.000 and one year later to withdraw US$ 400.000 ? (years 2003-2004)
Contrary to one reviewer, I do know that this book CAN cause financial harm. Had you stayed in dollar-cash here, you would have lost money because the dollar lost value against several other currencies.
Prechter should have been more cautious and have talked about ALTERNATIVE scenarios before the fact. He revised his counts and says that the US is nowadays on Elliott Wave B and soon we will see the Wave C. How soon ?
Maybe he is right medium-long term. He is not wrong about that yet. But his short term predictions were worthless, or better saying, worth killing.
However, I admit the book is informative and interesting.
P.S. In the book "The Great Bust Ahead" author Daniel Arnold says that "The Greatest Depression in American and UK History is Just Several Short Years Away" with the stock market peak ocurring about 2010.
Good luck to all of us!
Ah, I invite you to see my review of "Why Stocks Markets Crash" book by Didier Sornette to better understand what I have to say about this subject.
What Crash?.......2005-03-14
This book contains some useful historical information and some insights into the mass psychology of booms, bubbles, and busts.
Prechter should have left it at that. Instead, he offers up predictions. Big mistake. This guy bases his forecasts on Fibonacci numbers and so-called Elliott "wave counts." He labels all market patterns so that they fit the preordained Elliott Wave 5-up, 3-down pattern. If you see more or fewer waves than he does in any given market move, you just don't understand that there can only be 5 waves to the top of a bull market. He's imposing his theory on the market, but surprisingly enough, the market doesn't care. It does whatever it wants, in however many waves it wants, and Bob has been very frustrated at the market's aberrant behavior lately. He got lucky early in his career, but it seems he's been fairly consistently getting the market wrong since missing the '87 crash.
Any superstitution can "seem" to work if you only look at its happenstance apparent accuracies and disregard its abundant failures. Keep looking for certain numbers of waves and Fibonacci ratios and you'll find what you're looking for. Pick any set of numbers or patterns or wave counts, and you'll find those too. The market doesn't care about any of those things, though. It's nothing more than an aggregation of billlions of individual choices, which are influenced by an infinite number of factors none of us can ever understand fully. University studies of various investing methods have found that Elliott Wave, like most, is no better than random stock selection.
If Prechter had chosen the random method, he and his followers would at least have a good chance of keeping pace with the market. Unfortunately, he has been getting everything from the Dow, to oil (he thought it was going to $10), to gold (he didn't think it could break $400), to deflation (the "deflation" scare ended shortly after this book came out) WRONG in the past couple of years. He apparently STILL believes that the Dow will go to 400 (not 4,000 but FOUR HUNDRED) because his charts tell him it should (they've been telling him that since about 1990, actually). Prechter doesn't understand demographics or economics or markets or the monetary system, all of which render "Dow 400" among the goofiest of forecasting absurdities -- unless you believe a giant asteroid will hit and wipe out two thirds of the population (I don't think Prechter is counting on that).
Our debt-heavy economy may have a significant crisis soon, perhaps by the end of the decade. It will most likely be spurred on by inflation and rising interest rates. But it's not happening now and it's not happening in the way this author has been prematurely forecasting for over a decade.
This book came out near the bottom of the 2000-2002 stock bear market, just in time for a reader to short stocks as they began a new bull market. How typical. While promoting the book, Prechter said it was "definite" that stocks would "crash"
in 2003. He said that 2003 would be "the best year yet" for bears (short sellers). Late into 2003, when it was clear that the market had proven him wrong, Prechter declared on a radio show that by the end of 2004, the Dow would "certainly" fall below 5,000. Wrong again! Since his Fibonacci turn dates and Elliott wave counts fail to portend the future, maybe next he'll tell us he's found the secret code to the stock market from the text count of Nostradamus' writings.
Bob Prechter couldn't call the market if it was listed in the Yellow Pages. This guy couldn't time the market if you gave him a stopwatch. He's throwing out guesses and misleading people by describing them as "definite" and "certain." He's either a liar or a true believer in his own irrational superstitions. In either case, he's not credible.
Here's all you really need to know: Buy dividend stocks. Buy short-term bonds. Buy gold. Hang on to them. Do that and you'll do better than you will trying to follow the prognostications of market gurus. Plus, you'll have a lot more time to devote to family, fun, and productive activities.
