Book Description
This book presents topics in the grammar of South Efate, an Oceanic language of Central Vanuatu as spoken in Erakor village on the outskirts of Port Vila. It is one of the first such grammars to take seriously the provision of primary data for the verification of claims made in the analysis. The research is set in the context of increasing attention being paid to the state of the world's smaller languages and their prospects for being spoken into the future. In addition to providing an outline of the grammar of the language, the author describes the process of developing an archivable textual corpus that is used to make example sentences citable and playable, using software (Audiamus) developed in the course of the research. An included DVD provides a dictionary and finderlist, a set of interlinearized example texts and elicited sentences, and playable media versions of most example sentences and of the example texts.

Excellent Tutorial.......2006-09-07
This is a great book- full of artistic pieces and knowledge on how to recreate your own work! I wanted this book for a long time, found it on Amazon and paid a fraction of what I would have paid in the store!
Timeless Information.......2006-03-17
Though this book was published clear back in 1997, the information is timeless. I tend to shy away from older how-to books, but this is a great book to add to your art and craft library. I wish all how-to books were this thorough and informative. You get your money's worth here.
The only book on this you will ever need!.......2005-12-15
I've been wanting both of her books for awhile now and I finally splurged and got both of them (the Polaroid Manipulations book that concentrates on the SX-70 manip process).
When I first flipped through this book I was blown away and amazed by the content. This book is the number one resource for helping you along with your Polaroid transfers and emulsion lifts. It is HIGHLY informative. The author guides you step by step and even provides some background information on how the processed were discovered. She also offers a lot of inspirational material in an advanced techniques section of the book. At the end of the book there are artist galleries with drop-dead-gorgeous work!
I recommend this book highly to anyone who wants to get into the alternative processes with the Polaroid medium. Don't hesitate... get a copy today!
Very well constructed.......2004-01-16
This should be in every Alternative Artists(Photographer) library. Well written, excellent examples and very comprehensive. You should be able to flourish in the medium after experiencing this book. Kathleen has consolidated a concise book that brings it all together. A value to all.
Great information and images.......2003-01-15
Very useful book for those of you starting out with image transfer or emulsion. Easy to read with a great artist section.

A huge alarm clock for the citizen mind.......2007-08-19
I love this book. Since I have discovered it, I keep on recommending it to all my friends and to the people I care of. And I tell you, too: Run! Buy it, read it asap and keep it on your desk in everyday life.
I feel very ashamed about having come to know about this author so late and found this book in particular only now: as far as I understand it was released in 1994!
So I explain you the reason why for this late enthusiasm for this book. I had the occasion to listen to a public speech about globalism of Mr. Raulston Saul last March at the Shanghai International Literary Festival. Raulston Saul was brilliant and entertaining, and seemed to have developed a lot of ideas I was thinking about myself, rather in loneliness, in the last years. However, having never heard of him and not read one of his many works I felt uncomfortable and didn't feel like meeting him and shaking hands after the speech. After reading this book I will regret that forever...
Back home I searched Amazon and bought his books in bulk. I haven't yet read all of them, of course, but I feel like an urgent need to recommend this book to everybody.
In the form of a dictionary, this book is a masterpiece of communication and a pleasure to read.
By an extraordinary sense of humour and an entertaining prose Mr. Saul shows us how many ideas are circulated in modern society in the form of truths and passively accepted, unveiling for us the subtle play of the technocrat elites behind them, thus exercising power and control, with the result to devoid our modern democracies of real participation and responsibility from the part of the citizens.
I have an economic background and I attended university in Italy during the fabulous Eighties, a time we were prepared only for growth and success. The Nineties proved quite different and I have always thought we were facing times with a set of tools (truths!) which simply no longer fit. We lived the Nineties thinking by ourselves `Maybe this is just lasting some years and then we are back to the Eighties'. But this has never happened.
What really strikes me is the early perception and warning - and the depth of it - of many issues of contemporary life by Raulston Saul. I have been thinking in my loneliness a lot of things along Raulston Saul's lines but I always felt I missed the historical knowledge necessary to put many issues in the right perspective and demonstrate what my critical sense was able to outspeak in an almost wild way.
Now, I don't say I am today in the condition to check and verify all the facts quoted in the book - I still feel too ignorant and still need to investigate a lot of things - taken from the huge, multifaceted and wonderful culture of Saul - summarized and organized in the form of evidences of the aggressive common sense definitions given in the book. But I know it doesn't mind. This would be a lazy way to take Saul's clever book and right a manifestation of lack of doubt which is exactly what the author dislikes, that in fact the most important and revolutionary message of the book is "Citizen, set free your powerful ability to doubt as a mean to check other people assumptions, to get a better understanding of things, to participate in the decisions that shape our world and the life of the people who live in it".
Being overloaded of communication we have lost the habit to check what we are said also due to a lack of time. We leave in a time where brands guide us in our choices and help us to feel ensured about them to be right. We finish to make the same with ideas that circulate under brand names themselves. We tend to quote brands and to become lazy thinkers and we take for right the most advertised ideas. We become lazy also because so many important issues in contemporary life are put in such a complicated and technical way we often just give up to verify the truth, and just verify the brand that truth is labelled with.
Saul is such a great communicator. Using a Western philosophic approach in developing its definitions, putting them in an historical context in a very free and charming way, he makes us aware of so many common sayings, representing very clear interests of elites made blurred by difficult definitions and obscure technicalities, sold us as inevitable truth that time proved to be fashions.
So, even with a terrible delay, I tell I have enjoyed in particular the following voices: DOUBT, CIVILIZATION, the HOLY TRINITY - Late Twentieth Century (COMPETITION, EFFICIENCY and MARKET PLACE), Harvard School of Business and Chicago School of Economics, BUSINESS CONFERENCE, BALLROOM, DAVOS and ASPEN, HUMANISM, HAPPINESS, ECONOMETRICS, DUAL USE, ARMAMENTS, just to mention a few because many others are masterpieces as well.
Enjoy the book and the practice of the art of doubting.
Introduction to critical thinking.......2006-03-27
I picked this book up at a little bookstore out of curiosity, and have since named it the one of the most influential books I've ever read.
Some bookmarked definitions are :
Destiny: Being rewarded for cooperation
Intelleigence: The ruling elite's description of its own strengths
Dictionary: Opinion presented as truth in alphabetical order
I've always been a critical thinker, but this book helped accelerate that thought process to my current position as a smart ass college student. Get this book if you want to have your mind frazzled.
puerile.......2003-08-23
The main problem with this book is that it's just not funny, although Saul tries so very hard to be. Ambrose Bierce he is not. Nor much of an incisive critic in the Frankfurt School vein either, though no doubt he wishes he had Adorno's acerbic wit. What the book ends up being, then, is a collection of half-baked observations written in workaday prose. The entries either are utterly pointless ("HAPPY HOUR: A depressing comment on the rest of the day and a victory for the most limited Dionysian view of human nature.") or take potshots at ideas and people far too complicated for Saul's facile understanding of the universe (the entry on Plato begins: "Brilliant novelist. Accomplished humourist. In spite of which he wasn't as much the author of Socrates as he would have wished"--okay, but who WOULD be, I wonder, since Socrates wrote no books himself? Would Saul argue that it'd be better to have no books at all purporting to summarize Socrates' thoughts than those by Plato?). This is exactly the sort of book written by someone who's told by his dull-witted friends once too often that he's so funny and smart he ought to write down his pensees for the benefit of mankind.
An abecedarium of subversion........2003-07-02
This should truly be compulsory reading for journalists, students, professors, and those who generally like to be informed. Those who prefer to wallow in intellectual mediocrity and ignorance may stay clear of this volume. John Ralston Saul articulates what we all know and yet refuse to believe. Illuminating and necessary.
Biting Commentary Essential to all Concerned Citizens.......2001-07-05
Saul has attempted to place the current use of language for the purpose of public discussion into historical terms. Through the unusual format of a dictionary-style argument, Saul convincingly argues that our public officials' obsession with a society conceived upon the faith of knowledge specialization and economic quantification has swerved Western Civilization (as defined by the values that emerged out of the Enlightenment) off the very basis of what has allowed our societies to develop, prosper and gain greater informational and monetary wealth.
Throughout the argument, Saul points out that historically, it is not through a blinding respect for one (sometimes isolated) principle that Western societies have developed, but that it is through careful (humanist) consideration of the complex and interrelated problems that constantly confront the varying interests of society. Though sometimes appalling in its generalizations and uncited factual accounts, the book is a satirical and correct swipe at our use of language sure to affect your own analysis of daily events.

Earth Vs. The Sci-fi Filmmakers: 20 Interviews
ASIN: 0786420693 |
Book Description
Tom Weaver's classic fifth volume of interviews is now back in print. Originally published as It Came from Weaver Five in 1996, this collection goes behind the scenes with 20 of the most talkative people of Hollywood's horror, science fiction and serial films of the 1930s through 1960s.
Delores Fuller loaned Ed Wood her angora sweater, but didn't fully realize he was a transvestite until Glen or Glenda was released. Tom Hennesy played the title role in Clint Eastwood's first movieRevenge of the Creature. The interviewees include Fuller, Hennesy, Junior Coghlan, Charlotte Austin, Les Baxter, John Clifford, Mara Corday, Kathleen Crowley, Michael Fox, Anne Gwynne, Linda Harrison, Michael Pate, Gil Perkins, Walter Reed, Joseph F. Robertson, Aubrey Schenck, Sam Sherman, Gloria Stuart, Gregory Walcott and Robert Wise. Also included is "A Salute to Ed Wood," with illustrations by Drew Friedman.
Customer Reviews:
Great.......2006-11-07
This is a really interesting book for fans of both cult movies and low budget filmmaking. I particularly enjoyed the section on Ed Wood. Outstanding.
ANOTHER GREAT TOME OF WEAVER INTERVIEWS!.......2005-11-29
It's always a special pleasure to read any book by Tom Weaver and "It Came from Horrorwood" is no different. Weaver is back with 20 more interviews of actors and filmmakers of horror and sci-fi films. The interviews in this book originally appeared in the pages of magazines like Star-Log and Fangoria. What makes Weaver's books such a treat to read is the intelligence that he brings to each and every interview that he conducts. Weaver's interviews are no mere fluff assignment pieces. Weaver does his homework and often times it seems he knows more about the career of the person he's interview than they do themselves. Many of these names are not household names, not even to devoted fans of the genre like myself. And therein lies the appeal of Weaver's books...he gets the interviews with some of these lesser known names who always have a story, often many stories, to tell.
I was particularly surprised by the interview with Frank Coghlan Jr. who played Billy Batson in the Republic Serial "Adventures of Captain Marvel" in 1941. If you never seen this serial it is just a delight, and maybe the finest serial ever made. Frank discusses how he got the job (He looked like Batson) although he had never heard of the character who was still in his infancy stages in the comic book. Coghlan sheds some light on the remarkable (for the time) stunts and special effects. Coghlan had a long career, right up to playing bit roles in a pair of Don Knotts pictures in the 1960's, "Shakiest Gun in the West" and "Love God".
Michael Fox (No J) is not a name you probably know but the face certainly is. Fox was in dozens of genre films and serials over the year before being a frequent character actor in the latter stages of his career. He was in films such as "The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms" and worked with Roger Corman in "Bloody Mama". You might remember Fox as the prison announcer in the original "The Longest Yard" in 1974.
Ed Wood has become a cult favorite due in large part to the successful, although factually skewed bio-pic by Tim Burton. Weaver interviews Wood's one-time companion Dolores Fuller who has little good to say about Burton's film, especially with the way Sarah Jessica Parker player her and also with the way Bela Lugois was portrayed. Fuller speaks highly of Lugois who often visited for dinner and entertained her young son with thrilling stories.
Anne Gwynne is a bit of a forgotten scream queen. As a Universal contract player she starred in many universal horrors in the 1940's including "Black Friday", "The Black Cat (1941)", "House of Frankenstein" and "Weird Woman". Anne has nothing but good things to say about co-stars Boris Karloff, Bela Lugosi, and John Carradine, but had a few choice comments about Lon Chaney Jr. and his bullyish treatment and pranks that he played on some of his co-stars such as Evelyn Ankers.
Another unknown name who provided a lengthy and informative interview was Gil Perkins who worked as a stunt double in thousands of films. Perkins was the stunt double for Bruce Cabot in King Kong. He also doubled as Frankenstein in "Frankenstein Meets the Wolfman". Later Perkins would work with Elvis Presley in "Jailhouse Rock", and also on the 1960's Batman TV show.
Other interviewees included Linda Harrison who played Nova in "Planet of the Apes"; Robert Wise the director of "The Day the Earth Stood Still"; Gregory Walcott from "Plan 9 from Outer Space"; and Gloria Stuart of "The Old Dark House". The book also contains a salute to Ed Wood. Another great effort from Weaver!

Your Better Off Playing Yourself.......2000-01-08
For such games as "Fighting Force 2", I sometimes find that it can be somewhat funner, and easier to play the game yourself. The guide gives a good intro including the weapons and frankly ever move possible, but when i got into the guide, it was confusing, and some things they told me, just didnt work! One problem was in level 4, i did what it said about 25 times over and over, but it just didnt work. When the makers did it, it was either luck, or they left out something the readers need to know. I reccomend to save your money, and get what ever fun you can out of the game itself instead of buying the guide for it.

Breakthrough, Compelling, Useful........2002-04-02
What a terrific book!
Unnatural Leadership stimulated my thinking on a number of levels. I read it on a cross-country plane trip, and came away feeling:
--A newfound sense of commitment to the work I'm doing;
--Energized about the possibilities of leveraging the principles as they relate to my own business;
--Eager to apply what I learned toward my own personal development efforts.
Not bad for a few hours where I might have otherwise plugged-in and zoned out!
Several things about the book make it stand out from the pack. First, the ideas are compelling and breakthrough. Second, it's written in a way that invites you to read it. Third, it's full of practical advice on how you can apply the principles described.
Most importantly, it's very clear that the authors have had the depth and breadth of hands-on experience to know--really know-- what the heck they're talking about. The book is not about theory. It's about what leaders really do to succeed in today's complex, rapidly changing world, as compared with what they once needed to do when their environments changed at a much slower, more predictable rate.
And there are some interesting surprises in this book. I, myself, am a management consultant, and thought I knew most of what there was to know about the latest-and-greatest ideas on the subject. Not so, I discovered when reading this book. You might say I was a bit humbled.
The bottom line is this. If you're connected to the world of Leadership Development in some way, and are interested in reading something breakthrough, compelling and really useful for a change, I suggest you read this book.

Dotlich and Cairo take a unique approach to a popular subject by writing a compelling book about the "unnatural" ways we must behave for effective leadership. Their ideas challenge our traditional leadership concepts and they do it in a very practical and innovative way. An easy to read book it's filled with lots of real examples of effective leaders. An added plus are exercises and practical tips for putting these ideas into immediate action. Definitely worth reading for those intersted in improving their own personal effectiveness as well as those in a position to drive leadership development in their companies.
"Unnatural Leadership" Review.......2002-03-13
Want THE definitive handbook on 21st century leadership?
This is it! David Dotlich and Peter Cairo have done a
fine job of ferreting out the qualities that comprise the
"new" type of leadership that's emerging in today's most
successful companies. "Unnatural Leadership" is a
tremendously illuminating book. Plus, it's a plain,
old-fashioned 'good read'. (Believe me, coming from a person
who generally finds business books unremittingly dull,
this is quite a compliment!) It's obvious authors Dotlich
and Cairo love what they do -- and their enthusiasm is
contagious!
good blend.......2002-03-12
I found Dotlich and Cairo's book very helpful in navigating the confusing space between what is taught in most leadership books/programs and what I've found works best. They balance up to the minute business smarts with valid academic research and history. GREAT READ.
