Book Description
The first in-depth resource on the American artists Elaine de Kooning, Helen Frankenthaler, Grace Hartigan, Lee Krasner, Joan Mitchell, and Ethel Schwabacher.
Book Description
In the years following World War II, images of comradeship, particularly of men being physically close, largely disappeared from the public record. But, as these stunning photographs attest, ordinary American men in the extraordinary circumstances of World War II were affectionate, winsome, and playful-disarmingly innocent in a time of cataclysmic peril.
Led by photography giant Captain Edward J. Steichen, the U.S. Naval Aviation Photographic Unit was organized during the war to record the daily experiences of Navy men all over the world and provide newspapers and magazines with images to promote the American cause. The unit's photographers, which included Wayne Miller, Horace Bristol, Victor Jorgensen, and Barrett Gallagher, took thousands of pictures of soldiers as they relaxed, trained, prepared for the next battle, and waited.
This book brings together more than 150 of those photographs, culled from the National Archives, including many that have never before been published. Whereas World War II imagery tends to be dominated by combat photography and monumental depictions of weaponry, these photographs offer a rare, intimate look at the Navy men themselves.
Customer Reviews:
Surprising!.......2007-04-28
I picked up this book because my dad and my grandfather served in the US Navy in WW II. I didn't see them or their ships in this book but wow! There are some beautiful photos here! Crisp black and white prints, impressive use of light, some clever composition... and so many strong young men, muscled and slender.
There is a sensuousness to many of the pictures that reminded me of Mapplethorpe's work, although none of them show full frontal nudity. As a collection the photos appear a bit homoerotic, although individually many of the images are fine art. The book is more about excellent photography and gorgeous young men than it is about wartime.
A Picture Rarely if Ever Seen.......2006-07-02
As an historical reenactor, and daughter of a WWII Navy veteran, I am constantly on the outlook for books and information on the lesser known ideas and culture surrounding WWII. This book was a real eye opener! While the author is open about his sexuality and the pictures were no doubt hand picked with a certain agenda, they show a world of innocence that was unconcerned with homophobic ideas of how a man should or should not act. Being together for long periods of time in uncertain circumstances, deep friendships definitely form. Your buddy could be the one to save your life during an attack, or you might loose him in a split second from a torpedo. As a woman, I can imagine the close friendships that would form today under similar circumstances among women, and I imagine men during that time were not held back by all the macho ideas of today. A beautiful book with striking photography, this stands as an important contribution to understanding our father's and grandfather's lives during WWII.
And this is how tender Maleness can be.......2005-01-01
Without a doubt this book will touch the memories and hearts of everyone who pauses to slowly peruse these casual photographs of men at sea in World War II. Without the overtones of trying to make a statement about the camaraderie that accompanies men off at war, these photographs simply follow a healthy group of sailors resting on board ship, working at their tasks, bonding in the bunk rooms and in play on the decks and the foc'sle. There is an obvious physical relationship that is transmitted in the gentlest ways, further proof that men together find the emotional and physical support so needed in the time of isolation from the world.
It is to Evan Bachner's credit that he shares this truly sensitive body of work with the public at a time when we all need to understand not only the plight of the men away at war today, but of the common threads of pansexuality that have never been a threat but only a solace in a world infected with prejudice. Grady Harp, December 2004
Wonderfully moving collection........2004-10-08
Too often, when modern schoolchildren consider WW2, they see the parades of elderly veterans, stooped, wrinkled, bemedaled, but essentally OLD.
What the compiler of this book has managed to do is to collect a wide range of photo material, much of it of very high quality, which shows the young men who fought WW2 as they were then. That is, as young men. Slim, upright, happy, fit. Often little more than schoolboys themselves. In that regard, this book is reminiscent of Herbert List's book "Junge Manner".
I was so impressed with my book that I've ordered a second copy to be put into the library of the secondary school at which I'm a governor. WW2 seems to be popular in history lessons. Let the children of today see the youths of yesteday as they were at their prime.
A Moving Tribute to Masculine Beauty.......2004-10-08
Looking through the photographs in this book was like viewing a beautiful dream. The photography is excellent as it was done by the military's professional staff of photographers. The sailors are fascinating to look at. They are in peak physical condition and their faces are expressive and feeling. A part of history with enormous importance has been catalogued and preserved for the future by this wonderful author. Thank you.

Very cool.......2007-07-12
I like this calendar. It shows what the Navy was back in World War II and being a Verteran myself but from the early 2000's, it's interesting to see all the changes and some of the things that still exist.
Really cool. I hope a new one comes out for 2008.
Not Prurient At All.......2007-02-12
The extreme heterosexism of the first reviewer must've made him suffer from optical illusions. Neither men nor women will get erections looking at this calendar. It's a respectful tribute to our fighting men in WWII.
SOFT PORN? NO - HUMAN AFFECTION.......2006-12-04
If you have a dirty mind, I suppose you could read these pictures as soft porn. I read them differently. My dad served in both the Army and the Air Force during WWII and he had pictures not unlike these. It was a time when men, straight, gay, whatever, could express physical affection without being labeled, and without it being read as implicitly sexual. If the pictures selected for this calendar and the book have an agenda, it's to show some brief glimpses of a time when right wing sickos weren't dominating the media with their visions of evil in every human interaction outside the ones they approve of. This is a valuable document of a vanished time and the brave and beautiful men who lived in it.
soft porn; pathetic.......2006-08-15
If you're a naval history reader or someone who enjoys books on the "greatest generation," it's important to point out that this product is fundamentally political in nature, and apparently calculated as a sort of campy joke on the military book-buying public.
Every photo has been selected for its homoerotic suggestiveness: sleek, muscled backs and long strong legs of sailors in bizarrely close physical proximity, camped out on flight decks, and generally crawling on top of each other.
This is a work of homosexual soft-pornography, framed with an almost campy Village People "In the Navy" subtext that insults the innocent ingenuousness of the Navy veteran of World War II. The gallant subjects of these photos are mere foils for the author's political message and prurient interest in male beefcake.
Book Description
Rehabilitating Mr. Wiggles: Vol. 1 collects the first 140 comic strips of everyone's favorite pill-popping, trash-talking, living room-defecating teddy bear. This 80 page bundle of pure bliss collects all your favorite Mr. Wiggles comics that have appeared in such illustrious venues as The Daily Orange, The NY Press, Real Detroit Weekly, Gear Magazine, and Basta 2003, as well as online. Representing a skewed humor that is just left of center, slightly over the top, and dangerously close to the edge. Suggested for mature audiences.
Customer Reviews:
Since when do teddy bears smoke crack?.......2005-02-11
I guess I was finally getting used to the idea of teddy bears spending days upon days in Atlantic City at the slot machines, but then I found out about this Mr. Wiggles bear...and I guess all of my preconceived notions about teddy bears have been chucked out the window.
There is not a funnier comic strip in the universe. I've read on Neil's website that there will be a volume 2 coming out soon. Until then I will continue on with the hunger protest.
This is one funny mother~! shut your mouth........2003-08-23
I laughed so hard I pooped myself.
Brilliant.......2002-12-04
Absolutely scintillating. A must have! I bet you cant read just one! This book is the bomb diggity! It changed my life and helped me get through my latest divorce. For mature readers only! There are bad words here and there, so immature people might get offended.
Offensive and disgusting... I like it!.......2002-11-03
A friend of mine recently showed me this comic, and my face actually hurt from all the laughing. The comics are not exactly politically correct, and do have a lot of jokes about crap and molestation, but hey- it works. I don't recommend this book to everyone, however, because the content is a bit extreme. If you're like me though, this'll be the comic you were always searching for and never found.
sick and twisted.......2002-10-24
This book is awesome, but only for the sick-minded! I been reading Neils strip online for a while and the book is a nice collection. Ya gotta get this book!

pressing an unexpected button.......2006-02-24
This is really a 4-1/2 star review. I'm okay with grossness, perversity, foul language and such when it's this funny. But I'm very put off by ... the bad spelling! Doesn't anybody edit these things?
By the way, this might not be the best choice of reading matter for the exercycle at the gym. Especially if there are people sitting on exercycles to either side. As I learned this morning.
Forget the sunday comics........2005-12-10
The chronicles of Neil & Mr. Wiggles is pure genius. I was first introduced to Mr. Wiggles from Real Detroit Weekly, and it's a shame this comic doesn't get more coverage and publicity. This is by far the only reason I open up the paper in the first place. I pass this comic onto anyone I can, and everyone gives the same responce...they laugh. The definate trademark art style and cut-throat akward pause humor is dead on.
Mr. Wiggles is the perfect character. Since he is a teddy bear, you can't help but find him very loveable despite the sickest acts and statements that come from his stuffed body.
Get volume 1 as well. It's interesting to see Neil's comic to continuously evolve. Besides, you need the whole collection right? Support good humor when you see it. Something like this is rare cause I haven't read a Mr. Wiggles comic I didn't love.
and no...Neil has not paid me off to say this...I have never even met him.
Pure Genius.......2005-10-10
If you haven't gotten into Mr. Wiggles yet, you NEED to. He is the sickest, most demented little bear and he will be your new hero. He is the shizznit!! Pure comic genius! No comic has EVER mad me laugh out loud as much as this! Not for the easily offended (a.k.a. people with no sense of humor) Get this if you want to laugh your arse off!

(There are about two quotes on each page)
Stupid Is As Stupid Does.......2001-01-15
I enjoyed this book. I laughed at the truly stupid things that some of the country's best athletes and coaches had to say. However, it's not the type of book that you could just read through in one sitting. The book is good if you are bored and want to scroll through it to get a good laugh.

Must Have For the TV Video Collector.......2007-09-16
I purchased the first two books way back when they first came out (1959-1975 and 1975-1980) and I have found these two books to be more valuable in the age of TV Programs on DVD because they list not only the titles of programs, but the actors. And the order of episodes is especially helpful if you are recording rare TV shows.
I didn't know the author had more books out after 1980. I'm definitely interested because this author is very thorough and his books are a must have for anyone interested in early TV.
An amazing piece of work........2000-03-22
This is THE reference for anyone, professional or amateur, who is writing an episode guide or just wants to have a list of the episodes of a given drama in airdate order. An invaluable resource, as shown by the number of Web-based episode guides that cite one or all of these volumes as references. For most TV series, Gianakos also critiques certain episodes, and puts the shows into the context of their time. The 1959-75 volume is my personal favorite, capturing the era I believe to have been TV's best. This is an inexplicably underrated series of books.

Book Description
World-renowned astrophysicist Trinh Xuan Thuan explores the universe, life, and human consciousness in terms of a musical score.
As prelude, Thuan describes the many other cosmologies that preceded the Big Bang theory of creation: the magical universe of cavemen, the ancient Chinese concept of the universe, the mathematical universe introduced by Pythagoras, and the heliocentric universe of Copernicus. He then explores the work of Galileo, Thycho Brahe, and other early scientists before moving on to our current understanding of the universe, the ways in which modern astronomers study the universe, the equipment they use, and their major discoveries.
An examination of the origin and nature of the universe inevitably raises philosophical and religious questions. Thuan examines these questions, presenting a provocative case for the Anthropic Principle and illuminating the place of God in a Big Bang cosmology.
Blending up-to-the-minute descriptions of the forefront of astronomy with thoughtful reflections on science's possible impact on philosophical and religious belief, this sweeping monograph explores the boundary between science and philosophy, science and art, and science and religion. With many beautiful and informative illustrations, The Secret Melody presents an enthralling look at our endless efforts to understand the cosmos and to hear the music of the stars.
Customer Reviews:
Tendentious, but interesting and well-written.......2001-03-10
I was very fond of this book until the end. As has been pointed out in the reviews, the author has a narrative talent absent from most science writing for the layman. He is also an aesthete with polymathic talents and interests. But herein lies the problem with the book. One of those interests is theology. One would have thought that most professional scientists would have learned by now to leave God out of the equation, since the question or even the meaning of the question, "Does God exist?" is scientifically unanswerable. Carl Sagan, to whom one reviewer compares Thuan is acutely aware of this fact in all his writings. Thuan doesn't exactly "believe" or have "faith" that God exists, but he concludes with a "scientist's bet" that something so complex and beautiful could not have arisen from chance. His reasons for doing so are thus really aesthetic, not scientific. He chooses to ignore that this world is not all art and beauty, but also massacres, bloodshed and mayhem: Wars and rumors of wars. His secret melody is really "the music of the spheres" a very poetic and understandable notion that originated in Ancient Greece(perhaps with Pythagoras), and which some relatively modern scientists, such as Kepler, were obsessed with, reformed to fit the discoveries of modern science.-Ultimately, Thuan, like Einstein, cannot bring himself to believe that our world evolved by chance. His argument is basically, though he denies it, a first cause argument heavily disguised. The orderliness of our world is caused by the secret melody. But what caused that? And what was the cause of what caused that? etc etc etc And what, by the way, is the evidence for a "secret melody" or "music of the spheres" to begin with beside man's mystical aesthetic experience. These are ideas scientists eschewed long ago as, well, not scientific. There is an invidious whitewash of the darker side of human nature in all of this which one would think one glance at the last hundred years of human history would warrant at least some taking account of. But to Thuan, as to Browning, "God's in his Heaven an all's right with the world." At times, considering the things men have done to each other, one is glad to be informed that in a few million years our Sun will expand and burn any humanity left to a crisp, thus ending the atrocities (as well as the beauty Thuan is so enraptured with of course)that man has perpetrated and created.-Ultimately, Thuan cannot bring himself to consider honestly what the great British scientist and philosopher J.B.S. Haldane pointed out: that not only is the universe stranger than we imagine. It's stranger than we CAN imagine.-Thuan takes the anthropic view, that the universe was created for the beauty enjoyed by us. This is terribly unscientific and egotistical. As Bertrand Russell pointed out, we are told that evolution from the earthworm to man constitutes "progress." But nobody has asked the earthworm his opinion on the subject.
Wonderful Cosmology.......2000-09-22
The author, T.X. Thuan--with the mind of a scientist and the heart of a poet--has been called the 'Carl Sagan of France" for his lucid science writing. No wonder this book is such a beautiful overview of contemporary cosmology! Unmarred by the weak writing style, materialist reductionism, or scientific arrogance that plagues other, more popular authors (Gribbin, Davies, Smolin), this book presents an eye-opening tour of contemporary scientific cosmology that is a real pleasure to read. This popular work is written with clarity, charm and erudition, along the lines Timothy Ferris' works. He suggests there is an underlying divinity--the "Melody" of the title--not a wind-up deity but instead an emergent wholeness. Materialists will read every line in a book and, not finding the plot any where, conclude that there is none. But its only a secret because you have to listen. This is a marvelous book and I loved reading it. And afterwards, you'll look forward to his new book, too!

Completely revised and updated, the second edition of this popular and handy reference book covers all the most useful and practical knots, bends, hitches, whippings, and splices in everyday use by mariners. It also covers the most modern high-tech rope materials and constructions, which require special knotting and splicing techniques. Book Description
Every firm's sales force combines the distinctive personalities of its members with complex issues of size, pay structure, incentives, performance evaluation, and effective uses of new technology. And while underrepresented in most marketing texts, the success of the sales force is a major component in the overall success of most companies.
The Complete Guide to Accelerating Sales Force Performance develops an effective, innovative framework for evaluating and improving the performance of any sales force. This book identifies and describes the key factors for creating a fast-track, go-to-market strategy. It's loaded with proven ideas for improving such "success drivers" as:
Culture * sales force structure * hiring * sales manager selection * training * compensation * technology * sales territory design * goal setting * performance management.
Packed with valuable insights and real-life examples, this guide is an excellent source of practical ideas for sales and marketing managers in all industries.
Customer Reviews:
Great Sales Force Reference.......2007-01-04
This was the required text for my Sales Force Management MBA class, and I found it to be a very thorough and practical reference. I am almost certain I will refer back to it in the future.
Not Enough Stars for this Masterpiece!.......2005-08-07
Whewie! I had many reservations about buying this book. The previous reviews made me skeptical, especially when I looked at the price tag and acknowledged the fact that I was going to bleed to death reading a blah-blah boring has-been couple of spineless professors rant about their lame memoirs and anecdotes lazily collected by one of their pet clones.
To be precise, this book was written by two of the most influential consultants, professors and businessmen in the world. They worked with sales forces and represented companies of all sizes, in addition to being 'team-driven' by their own successful consultancy spanning thirty years.
In many instances, they gained from the output of academia and collaborated their research with students associated from the prestigious Northwestern's J.K. Kellogg Graduate School of Management.
This book has foundation, structure, conceptual analysis and excellent ideas for any student, manager-in-training or business executive who is trying to avoid the "art of selling" or "quick buck motivational" 'diaper-training series' collections (sold at newsstands everywhere).
There are chapters from other excellent contributors related to Internet Strategies, Market Strategy and Segmentation. I found the material to be factual, concise and thoughtful.
This is a rare book written about sales forces. Sales forces are the life-blood of ANY company. Your ability to communicate with people will increase your power, wealth and happiness. A sales force can easily become 'unruly beasts' because the sales force are people dealing with people. Great sales managers must understand CONCEPTS about how to FOCUS, CHANNEL and DISCIPLINE people without disrupting profitability...AND LOSING GREAT PEOPLE!!!
"The Complete Guide to Accelerating Sales Force Performance provides education the way a textbook does, but it also provides guidance. It advises, similar to a manager's manual, and it seeks to provide the sales manager with an understanding of the entire sales force system by presenting frameworks for sales force design and performance enhancement."
Buckle Up! This book contains "all muscle and no fat." It is a mental and physical exercise book that requires considerable attention. "The quality of the selling organization has a direct effect on a company's sales and profitability." Now, time for me to mold my sales force into terrific shape. :)
A Good Read!.......2004-06-10
To boost your sales group's performance, give your salespeople very specific assessments and instructions, as per authors Andris A. Zoltners, Prabhakant Sinha and Greggor A. Zoltners. The trouble here is that the instructions are not only detailed, they are highly technical. You have to see sales as a science to make the best use of the graphs, charts, lists, diagrams and formulas. If you can make your way through the academic writing, you'll find some useful hard data, such as statistical evidence that backs the need for precise sales performance assessments. Despite its lengthy retelling of some very basic sales principles, we recommend this manual to the audience its authors suggest, "sales managers, top managers, salespeople who want to advance professionally, divisional presidents and business owners" plus business school students. If you're going to be academic, you might as well learn something.
