Book Description
Contemporary visual art stands on the ruins of beauty. What is the place of aesthetic in the experience of such art? And how has it changed in the two hundred years since the emergence of the modern conception of art as the object of a distinctive kind of pleasure? The essays in this volume, by philosophers and art theorists from Britain, France, Germany and the USA (Christopher Menke and Jay Bernstein), investigate the changing role of the aesthetic in art. From an Aesthetic Point of View is one of a new series of books, Prisms, which aims to bring to bring the best of contemporary philosophical thought about culture to the attention of a wider literary public.
Peter Osborne is Professor of Modern European Philosophy at Middlesex University, London and an editor of the Journal Radical Philosophy. His books include The Politics of Time: Modernity and Avant-Garde (1995), A Critical Sense: Interviews with Intellectuals(1996), and What Is Conceptual Art?

Book Description
Over 1,000 images teach shooting and Photoshop techniques in easy lessons for anyone wanting expert advice on digital photography.
In 2003, digital camera sales will explode following a 35 percent increase in 2002. Rick Sammon, one of North America's most widely read photocolumnists, covers all the steps in the digital photographic process.
Sammon begins with basic advice for those new to photography. Experienced film shooters will enjoy Sammon's ample coverage of Photoshop and digital image techniques. And in a bonus section, Sammon offers advanced tips such as taking glamour shots, producing e-books, and setting up a home studio.
Sammon answers questions such as "How do I select a digital camera? How do I store my images? What are the first things I should do when using Photoshop?"
Sammon's approach of "learning to see and seeing to learn" uses pairs of images, software screen shots, and the best photographs from his own vast library. The 107 lessons take the reader through each topic in friendly, concise steps. Includes a CD-ROM with "The Camera Looks Both Ways," a mini-course in photography. 1008 color illustrations.

Outstanding Photography Book.......2007-04-10
I bought this book before a recent trip to Italy. This is an outstanding book on Digital photography and photography in general. If you really want to improve your work from taking snap shots to creating high quality photographic images, you have to read this book! Absolutely the best book on photography I have ever read!
Rick Sammon's Complete Guide to Digital Photography: 107 Lessons on Taking, Making, Editing, Storing, Printing, and Sharing Bett.......2007-03-08
Thank-You this is a easy to read guide book. I also have learned a lot from.My Digital Photography teacher even has noticed my photo's are much better!
Complete Guide to Digital Photography - my opinion.......2007-01-30
While I like this book, and it does include a ton of useful information on various aspects of digital photography, I also have some criticisms. First, if you are not using Photoshop (CTS or Elements), this book will be of little value to you. Two-thirds (2/3) of the book is focused on techniques using Photoshop. Second, I am not a fan of the "every section is a short lesson or tutorial" approach. This often does not allow for in depth coverage of specific topics and can make it difficult to find specific topics. Finally, the CD/ROM included with the book is supposed to be a Tutorial, but is really a PowerPoint of selected chapters + some additional resources. It does not include photographs that are included in the book with before/after focus, which would be better. Overall, I think this book is good for someone who is making the transition from film to digital and/or someone who owns Photoshop and wants to learn more about how to use it.
Great Book for beginners and Experts.......2007-01-25
This is the best book out there for digital photography users. It will teach you how to buy equipment, the basics of computers and digital equipment, how to get started with your new camera, and shooting tips. It has basic info and then advanced techniques. It is a also a great reference book to dive into topics you havent learned yet. I bought 4 other books before this one, and Ricks book is all you will need.
From good to great!.......2006-03-16
This book helped me to go from being a good amateur photographer to a great amateur photographer. Each of the 107 chapters provides a short lesson for you to read and digest, before going out to practice with your own digital camera and computer. It took me about 3 months to finish the book, and a year later I still refer back to it from time to time.
FYI, although the auther uses the professional Photoshop program for around $650, I have been able to do just about everything using the lesser version for $93 (Photoshop Elements, Version 3.0 for Windows). Either way, Photoshop is a wonderful program, and you can always upgrade in the future.
The author provides great examples to help illustrate each of the concepts in the book. His photography is very creative while his writing is fun and personal. However, at the end of the day, what you put into it will definitely be what you get out of it!
Book Description
Dark Horse is tempted to call Little Lulu the "comeback comic" of the year, but truth be told, Lulu's been a treasured part of the entertainment canon for years! Dark Horse Books is proudly presenting the complete library of classic Marge's Little Lulu comics in a reader-friendly series of affordable paperback volumes. A rascally but good-hearted seven-year-old with an endless supply of sass, oodles of smarts, and a wild imagination, Lulu is truly one of a kind.
Customer Reviews:
Dennis The Menace, eat your heart out...!.......2007-02-06
I recently finished plowing through the collected paperback editions of the classic 1940s/1950s "Little Lulu" comics, and wanted to put in my vote... yes! yes! yes! True, it's a little disappointing that the strips are reprinted in black-&-white and not in the original color versions, but the real genius of these works is in the draftsmanship of artists John Stanley and Irving Tripp, and once you get onto their wavelength, even these half-size B&W reprints are a pure delight. They can say so much with such economy -- a single panel of Lulu's unbridled mischief can have you laughing your head off, and here, in this multi-volume collection, you've got a real treasure trove of some of the best graphic-art humor produced in the 20th Century. Great stuff, highly recommended, and major kudos to Dark Horse for making this artwork both available and affordable.
Wonderful Read with Printing Errors.......2005-03-05
I love having the chance to read this material in a new package. It's clever, funny, and well cartooned. Unfortunately, in this volume, two of the stories later in the book have pages printed out of order. Otherwise, I'd give it five stars.

Love Them!.......2004-09-20
These are great bumper stickers and they get the message out. Sadly, bumper stickers are all some people read...
Love Every One!!!.......2004-08-19
I am a girl that never puts bumper stickers on her car, but damnit I had to do it!! I look in the review mirror and see people straining to read, and then laughing their heads off! What better way to prove your point than with humor! I loved every one of these stickers, and I wouldnt suggest mailing them out of envelope, they are so great mailmen will be stealing them :)
Great ideas, great stickers, didn't survive mailing.......2004-07-15
These fabulous bumper stickers double as postcards, so I sent a few to friends. Then the other night, one of the recipients called me asking why I sent him a postcard that was blank white on the back. Apparently, the sticker came off in the mail. I'm putting the rest in envelopes before sending them, which kind of defeats the whole "postcard" thing.
It's funny because it's true.......2004-04-29
This is an excellent and practical tome. My only complaint is that they didn't include this masterpiece of simplicity:
Worst. President. Ever.

The ten bumperstickers are:
Asses of Evil
Thanks for Not Paying Attention
Four More Wars!
More Trees, Less Bush
It Takes a Village Idiot
One Person, One Vote (*May Not Apply in Certain States)
Putting the "Con" In Conservative

Better Even Than Hillary Voodoo.......2007-06-29
I didn't think I'd find a political book that made me laugh more than the Hillary Clinton Voodoo Book. But after seeing that the same author wrote this I checked it out and I'll be danged, it was even funnier.
W. is an easier humor target to be sure. But the book doesn't come at him from the usual angles. Lots of surprising and very funny stuff.
My only complaint is the pins to stick the W. Voodoo doll with were too small. Seeing the stupid look on the doll's face and reading about all of W.'s failures put into their full and proper and tragicomic context, I wanted to stick something at least the size of a knitting needle into it.

A diary of the "Days of My Life".......2005-09-27
I love this book! If you are a fan of Days of Our Lives and grew up with it as I did then you need this book! If you are a new fan then this would be perfect for you to catch up on what you have missed so far! It brought back some amazing memories to flip through and read about some of the great storylines of the past. It's also complete with an extensive photo album of heroes, villians, couples and weddings.
Days of Our Lives book review.......2003-09-22
I got the 30th anniversary book because I've only been watching Days for a few years and wanted to know the backstories. I was very impressed. It gave very detailed information and the photos were wonderful!
The only problemm I have with it is that it ran a little long in places. What I mean is, a paragraph could go on forever, which made it easy to lose my place. But I really recommend this book to newbies who'd like to know more about the history of this great show!
A TREASURE FOR DAYS OF OUR LIVES FANS.......2000-07-27
If you are a fan of the long running soap, Days of Our Lives, then this book will take you back in time to when the soap first aired with full detailed descriptions of plots. Since this book was published a few years ago, there isn't information on the most recent storylines, but it does provide background of characters who remain on the show today. Complete with interviews, wedding photos and information on some of the most amazing families in the soap (such as the Bradys and Hortons), you will discover some things you may never have known about this hit daytime show.
Recaps from the entire show.......2000-05-18
If you've just started watching Days or have even been watching for years, this book has recaps of all the storylines. Broken down in yearly segments, it covers all the important events that occurred each year from the begining in 1966 to 1996. It even has all the marriages, bad girls, and a complete cast list of everyone who was ever on the show during those 30 years. Color photos bring back great memories or vivid imaginations of the show's history. It's a great way to catch up on what's happening now or to clear up confusion on past plots.
A Blast to The Past!.......2000-03-29
Now this book is a must have DEFINATELY! It will take you back to thepast with a person to person history of all the tribulations eachperson has gone through and how they came to Salem. I can tell you that this book can take you back WAY back. From reminicing a specific wedding, death of a hated villian, to the birth of a child. This is a book you'd definately want to read while curled up around the fireplace eating some Bon Bons and sipping on some cappacino.
Let me know what you think! VOTE! END
Book Description
What they said when they were not singing.
Here are hundreds of quotes that highlight the wit, wisdom and lunacy of the opera world. Luminaries Verdi, Puccini, Wagner, Caruso, Ruffo, Chaliapin, Melba, Sills, Callas, Toscanini, Beecham and other more recent personalities have had lots to say about opera, themselves and each other.
There are venomous quotes from critics and emotional outbursts by performers and listeners. One hapless society matron tried complimenting soprano Eileen Farrell at a reception in her honor with "My dear, you reminded me so much of Kate Smith." The comparison so rattled the diva Farrell that she blurted out, "Well, kiss my ass!" and stormed out.
Austrian conductor Franz Schalk is noted for the most emblematic words about opera life: "Every theatre is an insane asylum, but an opera theatre is the ward for the incurables."
This book will be a delight for aficionados of opera.

Delightful Moments from the Wonderful, Wacky World of Opera!.......2003-11-13
The sub-title of "Quotable Opera" ("Aria Ready for a Laugh?")provides a strong hint of what to expect in this delightful collection by Stephen & Nancy Tanner. And lest you think it's all just "fluff," you'll be gratified to find a great number of more serious quotes from the cognoscenti of an art that's been called by so many different names over the years. Among the definitions of opera included here are:
"the most dangerous of all art forms"
"the selection of famous voices for fashionable ears"
"the most rococo and degraded of all art forms"
"an exotick, irrational entertainment" (Dr. Samuel Johnson)
and, by H.L. Mencken:
"The opera is to music what a bawdy house is to a cathedral."
The chapters of "Quotable Opera" are arranged according to subject, and, like the entire book, with the authors' unique sense of ironic wit and just plain fun. The chapter dealing with quotes by and about Maria Callas, for instance, has the title, "Is Diva Just Avid Spelled Backward?"
As you might imagine, some of the funniest quotations may be found in the chapter dealing with critics --including some of the snide remarks they have made about artists, along with what has been said, even more snidely, about them. One acerbic gentleman, for instance, referred to Dame Kiri Te Kanawa as "a viable alternative to valium." But then someone defined a critic as "a virgin who wants to teach Don Juan how to make love."
And speaking of making love, the chapter on "Sex and Opera" is full of amusing remarks from famous singers commenting on the effects of too much (or too little!) sex on their voices.
The abundance of funny stuff in the book -- and that includes the brilliant illustrations by Umberto Taccola -- is interspersed with generous portions of more serious remarks from famous men and women -- singers, musicians, writers, etc. (Even Mel Brooks is quoted at one point!) -- all giving their knowledgeable opinions about this great art form.
Composers are generously represented in these pages, often to great effect. Hector Berlioz, for instance, referred to Wagner's Tristan und Isolde as "a sort of chromatic moan." And
for anyone who has thrilled to a performance of Giacomo Puccini's music, it is illuminating to read what he requested of his librettist for Turandot, his final opera: "Create for me something that will make the world weep."
When you read "Quotable Opera," you may not find yourself weeping, but you will certainly laugh a lot, and along the way you might even learn something!

This little book is good for a quick giggle, but there is not much to it. A few gems here and there made me crack a smile, but it is nothing special. It might mean more to someone who watches alot of soaps for whom the quotes bring back memories.

Not worth Getting........2002-01-10
This book really is not worth getting, its just a step by step waste. Just spend the money on Bobby Fischer Teaches Chess if your a starter. This book is just a black hole to your wallet and will hinder you. You can read the other review and decide for yourself. I really don't care I own 50 chess books and I went from about 800 rating to 1600. All that in a about 6 months if that long. So you can really decide what you wanna do, I doubt anyone will even read this review. Basically you can get lot better starter books than this one. So do yourself a favor and by smarter quality over quantity. I have bought a few books I wish I didn't. I had to learn the hard way, you can learn the easy way.
No Easier Way to Learn How to Play.......2000-03-29
If you or anyone you know would like to learn the game of chess then this is the book for you.It is written in simple and clear language with many easy to read diagrams. Pandolfini takes you step by step through the rules, basic fundamentals and principles of the game that all first time players can easily follow and understand. I self taught myself with this little gem and now my children use it as a refferance.

Customer Reviews:
Flagship Book On Leadership.......2007-07-09
This was the first training and book that I ever participated in on leadership. And, that was 21 years ago! It is still timely and effective. I was impressed in re-reading the book how much of the practices that I had incorporated and made my own. This training and book made a remarkable impact in my life.
If you want the basics on leadership in one bundle - then you want this book. Read it. Use it. Re-read it. Become a more effective and influential leader.
Leader Effectiveness Training.......2007-07-03
Good, but since I have already read the Parent Effectiveness Training it was a little redundant, and slow moving.
A Keeper for Leadership Skills.......2007-04-12
I bought this book to use as a reference for a paper that I was writing on the subject of leadership for a communication class. The class had to do with small group communication. As I read Dr. Gordon's approach to leadership, I found that his participative management style was really what I was looking for and a great fit for how leadership can work effectively in a small group. Although the style of his book is definitely written as a "training" book for effective leadership, it has many thought provoking and practical insights that you can apply in many other areas of your life. We all find ourselves in groups throughout our lives in various and diverse situations and circumstances. This book offers some down to earth, common sense advice that you can take and apply when you find yourself as the "leader of the pack" so to speak.
I particularly enjoyed the section on " Doing it yourself - or with the groups help". I think that many people mistakenly believe that you have to use your power and manipulate people to be a good leader and to get a job done. Dr. Gordon shows the advantages of being a facilitator and drawing upon the strengths and resources of all members of the team.
The principles described in this book will not go out of style, because it deals with people communicating with people. Times may change, but leading people will still be the common factor that spans the ages. It can be a great tool for a new leader or for one who wants to brush up on their leadership skills. As a student, I know I'll be referring to it in future classes. This will definitely be one of those books that I'll keep on my bookshelf for future reference.
really helpful book.......2007-03-27
easy to read, we are using it for our class, communication and conflict resolution skills in our team.
Excellent Life Skills.......2007-03-12
This is not just for -- or even mainly for -- leadership training. This book teaches simple communication skills that apply to any relationship in which conflict occurs. I bought seven copies for my work team. I only wish the author would provide a concise synopsis of his approach for those who don't have time/inclination to read the entire book. I had to do this myself.
I have also read and put to good use the author's Parent Effectiveness Training. Why Dr Gordon's approach is not more widely known and put to use is beyond me. The world would be a much better place if more people understood and used these simple concepts.
