Jane Ware talked to experts from around the state in assembling this record of the collusion of money and art, ambition and characters, that we know as Ohio architecture. She wore out a set of tires and two cameras. She is a Columbus-based writer and the author of two previous books, and has been developing an Ohio point-of-view on architecture since the mid 1990s. Pleasure reading.......2003-08-02

First, few clarifications regarding earlier reviews: Be advised that the editorial review covers both books in this series, and that they have nearly identical titles. The first is 'Building Ohio: A Traveler's Guide to Ohio's Urban Architecture'. The second title is identical if you substitute "Rural" for "Urban". The word "Rural" is a little misleading, as the second book covers small-to-medium-sized cities as well as the countryside.

Regarding walking directions, the books do provide walking directions for small groups of closely-spaced sites. If you want to construct a longer walking tour, then you easily can plan it using the supplied addresses and directions with a city map.

The writing is very well researched, informative, and a pleasure to read. I've driven past many of the Cincinnati landmarks described here without knowing what they were, and it's a pleasure to be able to associate them not only with names and dates, but with stories. It's fascinating to know that modern airport taxi and bus routing, concourses, and baggage handling were pioneered in the design of a grand train station, Cincinnati's Union Terminal. Or, that landscaped cemeteries such as Adolph Strauch's Spring Grove Cemetery used to be popular picnic and party venues before cities started building parks to divert the load. In reading about our architecture, there is much to learn about ourselves. I'm still reading.

Photographs are in black and white. There are many sketches used judiciously to show how a building appeared in the past, or to present city-planning layouts. Not every entry is accompanied by an illustration, which was sometimes disappointing. The author defines her area of interest broadly to cover not just buildings, but landscaping and city design as well.

Building Ohio: A Traveler's Guide To Ohio's Urban Architecture by Jane Ware is an impressive and unique guidebook of Ohio urban architecture. Showcasing the buildings of Akron, Canton, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Columbus, Dayton, Toledo, and Youngstown, Building Ohio is enhanced with a four page listing of credits, an extensive bibliography, and a comprehensive index. Black-and-white photographs coupled with succinct information about historical buildings, great landmarks, distinctive features and much more completely fill the pages of this useful and highly recommended resource for travelers interested in seeing some of the finest architectural constructions Ohio has to offer.

Unique Book on Ohio's Architecture.......2002-06-14

Building Ohio is a unique book in that it looks at Ohio's architecture from a state wide perspective. Ohio's best architecture can be found in Cincinnati and Cleveland and this book covers both of these cities. However, Building Ohio is the only book I know of that also covers Columbus', Dayton's, Toledo's, Canton's, and Akron's often underrated urban architecture. This alone makes it a valuable and original resource. What I also like about this book is it sometimes gets off the beaten path. This is not just a highlight book of downtown architecture. Jane Ware also explores city neighborhoods and suburbs in search of interesting architecture.

I have lived in Cincinnati for the past twenty years and I found Jane Ware's opinions and writings informed and correct. I would think the one problem with writing a book on Ohio architecture are all the buildings that have to be left out because of space limitations. There are many buildings and neighborhoods in Cincinnati alone that are unfortunately not covered. If, after reading this book, you are interested in a more in-depth analysis of Cincinnati and its architecture, I would recommend Cincinnati Observed.

The one complaint I have with this book is that it is hard to use it as a walking tour since there are no directions between each highlighted building. For example, when I was in Columbus, and walking in the downtown area, I found it hard to follow from building to building since I am not too familiar with downtown Columbus.

Overall, I found this book to be a good buy and a much needed reminder on Ohio's often overlooked architectural legacy.

I picked up this book while I had some time to kill at the public library on a recent business trip and realized it most definitely does not belong on our coffee table. It is far from representative of American women but is strong in conveying the feminist message that real women get along best in the absence of men, particularly husbands. Instead of celebrating women who live without men, most glaringly portrayed by the lesbian couple, I'd appreciate stories about real American women whose womanhood unfolds at home surrounded by the love of a real man, her husband, and her numerous dear children, whom she is probably home schooling.

Everyday Lives-An Extraordinary Book.......2006-03-30

"A Day in the Life of the American Woman" has a beautifully simple premise-focus on the lives of "ordinary" American women who also happen to be unsung "everyday heroes."

This premise happened to result in one of the best "coffee table" books I've ever read. "American Woman" is crammed full of skillfully done interviews and candidly beautiful photographs that investigate the lives of so many inspiring women. The women in this book aren't just glamorous career women or wildly successful entertainers-they're mothers, brides, and cancer survivors. Yet their stories are special because they so full of hope and the kind of realistic, hard-won perspective that will truly affect readers.

I also found this book refreshing because it has no "agenda." It's not anti-feminist, pro-feminist, politically correct, or pushing alternative lifestyles. The authors, with real open-mindedness, investigated the lives of myriad women with complete honesty. The inner beauty and strength of ALL women is the focus-and that clearheaded aim makes the book even more valuable.

"American Woman" really is a book that needs to be purchased. I have never found another book that did more to encourage me to be myself and live my "best" life.

This is an amazing project, many of the stories could be a book unto themselves. I could identify with many of the women, others were foreign to me, but interesting. This would be a great gift for mothers, daughters, sisters. Most importantly, it's not just a photo book, but photos and essays together tell many, many stories. Reading them makes me feel connected to all women.

More than just a coffee table book.......2005-11-19

Too often the lives of woman are told from perspectives that make us look at the perspective and not the woman. The life stories of the women featured in this amazing book are the women we walk past, sit on the bus with and nod to every day. More than photos, this book takes us into the lives of women whose primary task everyday is to keep moving forward.

No matter their beginnings or pasts, every woman in this book teaches us yet again about the unwavering perseverance of women.

Well worth a look........2005-09-13

I found this book in my university library and picked it up based on what I read from the back cover. I had never heard of this movie but I had read Brownlow's amazing The Parade's Gone By and figured I could spend a few minutes flipping through the pages. The minutes turned into hours and I forfeited my studies to concentrate entirely on this book.

Not only is it a very intersting and exciting account of two teenagers growing up as they try against all odds to make a historically accurate film for no money, but it also addresses issues such as the artist's responsibility to be honest to his subject and what lengths are neccessary to acheive it.

A great autobiographical account, I would highly suggest this book for other film students planning their own films, as well as those interested in film history or the work of Kevin Brownlow. I did eventually see the movie, and felt that my veiwing experienced was enhanced in part from having read this text.

Terrible Writing and Insufficient Research .......2005-08-14

I read a lot of Biographies but this one was definately one of the worst. Malcolm Dome's feuilletonistic writing style really takes away from the reading experience. Why does he have to refer to Ac/Dc as Acca Dacca throughout the book? That was extremely irritating.
Also, all the research for this book stems from the files of either Sounds mag or Kerrang mag, sprinkled with some eyewitness accounts of AC/DC shows the author himself attended in the early 80's. That, to me, is just plain lazy. And even though the facts given in this book are acurate it still leaves you unsatisfied for the lack of detail.
Overall I must say that it DOES show that the book was written by the editor of a modern day Rockmusic mag. It reads much more like an enthusiastic review of a scribe who wants to make sure to stay on the good side of the band for future advance copies of the 'next' record than the writing of someone who takes an actual interest in cold hard facts and real roadstories. This book was lousy if you ask me.

My First Insight into AC/DC with the Kerrang Files.......2005-02-20

This was the very first book of it's kind I read about AC/DC. Pretty much all of which its are in its nontents are true. It starts from the pre-ac/dc days up to about 1994 just before the Ballbreaker album. I'm told there was an extended edition released after that, and this cover art Amazon shows is not the the same as my book. So it may exceed past 1995's ballbreaker album.

It has a vast display of history, photos, informations and album guides. As well as some cool details, and the reviews written in Kerrang and Sounds over the years. Introduced by Megadeaths Dave Mustaine, each chapter of th ebook has a breif comment by muscions from various bands about what they think of AC/DC.

A good read for any AC/DC fan. Probably a snore fest for someone not into them.

Great yet not so great AC-DC guide........2005-02-14

As the people close to me know, I love AC-DC. Angus' hard solos, Malcolm's smooth rhythm, and both Bon's and Brian's vocals. Before I bought this book I have read a whole lot of other information not in here. One is that the book didn't mention that the famous "Back in Black" riff was Malcolm's and not Angus's. One chapter was about the death of AC-DC's first front man, Bon Scott. Everybody was down yet AC-DC still pulled it through with Brian Johnson. There were a few mishaps in that chapter, but for the most part, it was correct. Other than those few missing and wrong facts this is a great book about the great AC-DC. It tells info about all of the great albums, and not so great albums, about Bon and Brian, and many more. This book is for any rocker who wants a little background or for somebody who just wants to read something. That is why I gave it a 4 out of 5

Overview of the American Bridge Series The American Bridge Series is designed as a sequential set of bidding courses, suitable for self-study or classroom-style study under the guidance of a professional bridge teacher. Volumes I through III include declarer play and defense skills as they relate to the bidding skills taught in each text. Volume IV is reserved for true experts; thus, declarer play and defense lessons would be an insult and are not included. The entire series takes about five years of study and practice to complete.

Volume I, The Basic American Bidding System was written for beginners and for social players who need to brush-up on basic bidding skills prior to tackling modern bidding methods. It features 5-card major suit opening bids, strong twos, and some basics of Forcing and Non-Forcing Stayman, Blackwood, Gerber, and few other things designed to form the framework for further study.

Volume II, The Intermediate American Bidding System makes the transition to modern methods including weak two openings. It teaches all of the pieces of "Standard" American in a way that integrates all of the varied forms of same. Don't be thrown by the term "intermediate." Many duplicate players think that they have reached that level when they can no longer play in novice games. Not so. "Intermediate," as defined by the authors, can vary from folks with zero ACBL masterpoints to 2500 masterpoints. It's not the points that count, it's the skill level.

Volume III, The Advanced American Bidding System presumes a complete understanding and skill with all of the material in Volume II. However, some of the Volume II material is repeated for intended redundancy, since the authors suspect that many folks who shouldn't be attempting to study Volume III will do so anyway. After all, "I'm a Life Master, I must be Advanced." The authors suggest that anyone not comfortable playing in Flight A at an ACBL regional or national tournament, or the World Bridge Federation (WBF) or other governing body equivalent thereof avoid purchase and study of Volume III until they have mastered all that is taught in Volume II.

Volume IV, The Expert American Bidding System, (NOT YET RELEASED) presumes two years' experience with the bidding techniques taught in Volume III, and expert declarer play and defense skills. This is not a "Mom and Pop" book. It is for those who wish to successfully compete in such ACBL events as Flight A Grand National Teams, the Blue Ribbon Pairs, the Life Master Pairs, the Spingold, Vanderbilt, and Reisinger teams, etc., and International events like the Bermuda Bowl and Venice Cup, The London Times Pairs, the McCallan, etc. It features 4-card majors, the TEAS responses to no trump openings, weak no trumps, and a variety of other bidding methods which will get bidders to the optimum place but will require expert declarer play or defensive skills to maximize results.

All four books emphasize sound, disciplined bidding and an underlying philosophy of "You bid your cards, I'll bid mine, we'll get to the right spot." By the time students complete study and practice of Volume III, they should be able to know what cards partner holds almost to the spot at the conclusion of an auction. In fact, Jerry and one of his partners were once accused of cheating when they got cocky and did this after an auction. The comment was: "How can you know what cards your partner holds?" Jerry's answer: "Isn't that the whole point of the bidding?"

I bought this book in order to obtain some insigths of the construction business, You know: tips about contractors, methods, ways of doing some comercial offers and proposals. The book is all about remodeling. Perhaps the title should be: "How to succeed with your own REMODELING and SMALL construction business". If you are after this, that's the book.

I think the title of this book is very misleading. It should be called how to succeed at your own REMODELING business. Perhaps others consider remodeling is equal to "construction" but I feel they purposely mislead people with this title.
There is some good general info in this book, but much of it is pretty outdated as it was written 15 years ago. There are better books available, and this one needs to be updated.
