Useful and concise.......2004-01-08
This text is a very handy pocket-book to take along to museums and on architectural tours. The opening pages of the book are devoted to drawings of architectural terms -- there is a heavy emphasis on church and cathedral architecture, with a few pieces on Greco-Roman aspects of architecture. That makes this helpful in terms of European tourism, but it leaves out the greater range of non-sacred architecture, at least among the graphics (a few terms are included, without visual aid).
The dictionary is, as most dictionaries, arranged alphabetically. However, this proves the problem of most dictionaries of this sort -- if you don't know what something is called in the first place, it takes a great while to thumb through the pages to find the terms one seeks. More graphics showing visual clues would be helpful throughout the book.
These shortcomings aside, this is a very handy book, easily carried and easily used. It has usefulness to those interested in art history, studio arts, architecture, photography, decorative arts/crafts, and more. Terms are generously cross-referenced, and terms in common use in museum publications, descriptions and labelling are all included.
The book includes a generous bibliography arranged topically suggesting further readings. A must have for the avid museum-goer, it will also be a welcome addition to any student or casual observer of art.
Book Description
In 1972, Stephen Shore left New York City and set out with a friend to Amarillo, Texas. He didn't drive, so his first view of America was framed by the passenger's window frame. He was taken aback by the fact that his experience of life as a New Yorker had very little in common with the character and aspirations of Middle America. Later that year he set out again, this time on his own, with a driver's licence and a Rollei 35 - a point-and-shoot camera - to explore the country through the eyes of an everyday tourist. The project was entitled American Surfaces - referring to the superficial nature of his brief encounters with places and people and the underlying character of the images thathe hoped to produce. With such an easy-to-use camera, he photographed relentlessly. In American Surfaces, I was photographing almost every meal I ate, every person I met, every waiter or waitress who served me, every bed I slept in, every toilet I peed in. But also, I was photographing streets I was driving through, buildings I would see.'Shore returned to New York triumphant, with hundreds of rolls of film spilling from his bags. In order to remain faithful to the conceptual foundations of the project, he followed the lead of most tourists of the time and sent his film to be developed and printed in Kodak's labs in New Jersey. The result was hundreds and hundreds of exquisitelycomposed colour pictures, whose subject became the benchmark for documenting of our fast-living, consumer-orientated world - a body of work that followed on from Walker Evans and Robert Frank's experiences of crossing America and that influenced reams of photographers such as Martin Parr and Bernd Hilla Becher, who introduced a generation ofstudents to Shore's work.

Helping us See Again...Beyond Critiques of American Consumer Fetishism.......2006-09-27
I loved this book, partly because I love this photographer's eye. Are the pictures documentary? Sure. Are they wry? Often, though not always. They are beautiful in the most strange, farfetched, formal aesthetic sense (shapes, colors, imaginary visual lines). That about sums it up. Stephan Shore's pictures exist on many levels simultaneously---one reason they are worth owning in book form, able to be revisited many times over a long time. Shore has a genuine gift, and he shares it with whomever takes the time to really look. This older work is relevant to contemporary production worldwide (i.e., Thomas Struth). Hopefully you will enjoy this book as much as I do.
American Surfaces, pretentious time capsule?.......2006-02-25
It's hard to tell how vital this visual diary is in the grand scheme of photography. It's a very personal travelogue. Shore is obsessed with himself and where he goes and what he sees. As a summary of early seventies pop culture it is fantastic. You can find out what people looked like and more importantly, what everything else looked like. I appreciate this aspect of the book, it's a reference guide to 1972. I think some of the photography is top notch but think that the book would be stronger edited down a bit. It's more interesting than the original but packs less of a punch. Could you live without it? Of course. Do you want to? No.

A book to relieve all those memories.......2000-11-29
This book is so sweet and nice. A pity it is a bit too short. Couldn't get the hang out of it. I had also bought another book' "Nice Shot, Snoopy" which is another of my favourite. I have difficulty in finding another book, " You are the Greatest, Charlie Brown!" Its a short story. Its about the whole school involving in a school meets and of course, Charlie Brown was involved also and almost won a medal! So, if you know of any copies of this book available, please let me know. Thanks!
The Best Snoopy Review On The Planet.......2000-07-07
This book, 'Lead On, Snoopy' was fantastic, just like any other Peanuts books I have read. I am only 12 years of age but I love any books that have humour in them. Lead On, Snoopy was very entertaining and I had lots of fun reading it. I would recommend this book to anybody at all, wether you are a Peanuts fan or not, a young child or an adult or anything else that knows how to read!
Too Short...........2000-04-09
As a Peanut Fan, This book is just too short. It ends when you're just about to get started. It make you yearn for more and more..Peppermint, one of my favorite and mercy went on the camping trip with Our Guide Snoopy !

More Terrific Cat Stories.......2007-07-19
Loved revisiting Thermal and the other cats of Deric Longden. As good as 'The Cat That Came In From The Cold.'
Enough for me!.......2001-08-31
I do love Longden's writing. He can handle tragedy (I'm thinking here of a couple of his other books) and high humor (or should I say humour) equally effectively. And, he certainly does know his cats. The scene with the gentleman and the pen just cracks me up every time I've read it--obviously more than once. If you like British style humour and cats you'll love this book.
Ever wonder what cats sound like?.......1999-12-09
This is an ABSOLUTELY delightful book to listen to! Mr. Longden's ability to give voices and personalities to animals, and especially inanimate objects is a remarkable gift. His accent is charming and the voices he gives his cats and their pets - a wire brush, a walnut [an especially ugly one] and a sultana, will have you giggling down the highway. While listening to this I went straight to see if he had any other books on tape, but sadly, he does not. I do hope he's working on another one. This would be a wonderful gift for a cat lover or anyone who enjoys a clever turn of phrase. His writing is excellent! This was one of the best books I have ever listened to - and I listen to lots! Absolutely worth the price!
Laughed 'til I cried....more please.......1999-05-14
Here in Australia people love their cats. They care for them. Most have them desexed. Take em to the vet if they are sick, etc, but i find that those who have a real relationship with them are very few. Deric has the ability to bridge the gap between human and animal, to see the personality under the fur coat.
Working in an animal shelter and adopting out hundreds of cats and thousands of kittens, I applaud the men who mostly chose adult cats for their character, sadly most women wanted kittens and went for looks.
Our eight cats came to us at various ages, one lived with for eight years arriving at age 17. Each had unforgettable and unique personalities and enriched the lives of the humans and other animals in this household. How incredibly lucky we were that they all lived very long healthy lives and that they left a legacy of laughter, companionship and sweet, sweet memories.
After reading listening to 'Enough to Make a Cat Laugh' whilst on the net. I immediately told everyone i knew and blasted the internet Pets/Cats/Animal/Welfare groups to tell them of this fabulous book, as most books about cats are purrile and banal in the extreme. Well done, Deric, I think you are a brilliant humourist and eagerly await more thoughtful and inciteful work from your pen.
I am very cheesed off that the ABC here hasnt shown your play with Thora Hird and I intend to plague them with requests. The local library has your books and they are harder to get hold of than hens teeth and i have complained loudly for more copies.
I adored your cameos of people and am still laughing at the indian gentleman with the pen.
How marvelous it was to find a book that presented our beloved cats as they are, warts and all.
With sincere best wishes to you, your wife and family and any cat lucky enough to be owned by you.

Customer Reviews:
A pleasant read although it doesn't dig deep.......2003-08-06
I have to admit I read this book because I crave information on Stevie Nicks, not the history of the band she's usually associated with. I did end up finding some of the early history of Mick Fleetwood/John McVie's band interesting and amusing (I didn't know Mick had worked as an interior decorator). There is some good information on Stevie Nicks once she and Lindsey Buckingham enter the picture, but it just whets your appetite. You groan because you want to know more, much more about the events described. You want the DISH and there's just a sort of genial, breezy narrative here.
I did like the British author's writing style (he was assocatied with the Mac in their earliest blues career). He has a good sense of humor, an amusing vocabulary (at one point he describes a friend of Stevie's being "winched in" to help with one of her albums) and doesn't take himself too seriously. That's refreshing because I'm sure that when the members of the Mac write their own stories, they will. I liked this book but I'm sure hard core fans, the ones I feel I'm constantly trying to catch up to, knew all this stuff ages ago.
Bland and misinformative.......2000-10-16
I am not a fan of this "cashing in on my old bands success" formula. My favorite part of this book was going through it and picking out all the mistakes Bob Brunning made...there are numerous typing errors and even more information that is just not correct! The pictures aren't anything you haven't seen before...boring!
Probably the best objetive book on the Band available........2000-01-15
Well written, entertaining, thorough book composed by a semi-insider close to the band. But still objective. This is the best overall book on the band. Mick's 2 books are also great but this one has an outside objectcive perspective. Highly recommended.
Fleetwood Rocks!.......1999-12-20
This book is great if you are a true FM fan! If you have the time to dig deep into the world of Fleetwood Mac, then read this book! It is an indepth look into a world that the author was actually a part of. Highly entertaining!
Great book. but if you have "Behind The Masks", don't bother.......1999-03-20
This is basically a 2 chapter update to Brunning's earlier FM book, "Behind the Masks".
It is a great read, and I recommend it thoroughly, Fleetwood Mac's story is incredible.

Pretty good..........2002-02-14
Planets of the UFP is basically a brief guide to some of the planets featured in "Star Trek". Despite the title, many planets are not UFP members, but that doesn't matter. Each world has information regarding the inhabitants, the climate, the history, etc. Much of the information was created especially for the book, and is pretty interesting. Although it is apparently a sourcebook for an RPG, that doesn't detract from the reader's enjoyment of the book, I enjoyed the book and all I know about RPGs is what RPG stands for!
Customer Reviews:
Good resource..........2002-07-16
For RPGers or just Trek Fans this is a very good guide on several of the planets/systems mentioned in Star Trek. Gives a brief bit of history on each, as well as info. on the system (# of planets, star type, etc...). Planets include: Acamar, Aldea, Alpha Centauri, Andor, Ba'ku, Betazed, Bolius, Calder, Caldos, Cestus, Denocet, Dytallix, Earth, Galor, Lyaar, Minos, Nausicaa, Oyarsa, Qualor, Risa, Tellar, Vagra and Vulcan.
Neat Trek info for gamers and non-gamers alike.......2000-05-19
This nifty little supplement is a concise collection of Planetery and Cultural descriptions of TNG Systems. Its short but well written entries are enough to give your players a quick rundown on-the-fly, or to use as a starting point for creation of entire campaign worlds. Some planets are familiar (Cestus III, home of the Gorn Encounter in TOS "Arena" is a thriving colony of Humans and baseball-loving Gorn) and some are new (including aliens not restricted by a television budget). My only real complaint is the limited quality of the art. But all in all, a good buy.

Yes, you can make money from home.......2007-05-07
This is a great book for those who want to look at various options of making money from home. Very sound advice with samples and guidance to various career options. I highly recommend this book.
This is the one book that will really help.......2007-04-19
This book is great. I am a new mom that has been looking for a way to stay home and bring in some income at the same time. This book told me everything I needed to know. From a guide on how to start a business to managing your family and home. There are also many different profiles of moms who have their own business. How they got started, what they needed, how much money they make and how they manage their business and kids. This book was worth every penny.
Want to start your own business???.......2007-03-09
well this is the one for you...with or with out being a mom, i am a mom, but not to a child...i have 2 dogs and a cat. and i am seriously thinking i want to build a business from home so that if the time comes that i am pregnant or have a child that i can be there for him or her...
this book will help you find the job you want, then find ways to market it, make it legal and give you ideas to make it better/more productful. it also gives you different peoples stories of what they started and how it has worked for them.
You have to check it out!
Real life wahms.......2006-02-15
When I first wanted to work at home, I remember finding Liz's website Bizymoms. The first edition of her book hadn't yet been published (1998) but already she had a list of viable home business ideas with real-life stories to back them up. For me, reading about real moms who had found a way to work-at-home was a huge help. It brought the theory from "how to" books into the real world. Liz offers other great tips but for me the real life stories and ideas were the most valuable part of the book. Now I know working at home does happen...I've been a wahm since 1998!
Way Too Vague to Be Beneficial.......2005-10-27
The profiles contained within this book are enjoyable reads, but the information is simply not comprehensive enough to be of real value.
For instance, a proofreader is profiled - she proofreads manuscripts for major publishing houses, including bestsellers. The odds of landing this type of work, unless you have an "in" (you used to be in publishing, for instance) are nearly impossible. While it's understandable that the author wants to sound optimistic, the simplicity of some of her advice is misleading.
Another woman profiled is an attorney, who obviously has the contacts from her working days that bring her work to do at home, as well as the ability to offer a service that is in demand. The average SAHM doesn't have a law degree, and can't just run out and get one.
The truth is, if you don't have work experience or a formidable skill that somehow make you in-demand, this book will do you no good. If you do have the experience or skill, then what you need is a book on marketing your services...simply posting flyers, as suggested in the book, is not going to lead you to 30,50, 80K a year!
If you just want to make money while you're home with your child, but have no real skills or experience, then try selling on ebay or having merchandise parties in your home. If it were so easy for people to make tens of thousands out of their homes every year, everybody would be doing it.
