Book Description
One of the most distinguished experts on van Gogh and Cézanne sums up a lifetime of research and discoveries.
In the art trade, research and judgment meet in a special way. Good or bad, genuine or fakethese are questions that often prove to be more urgent and to have more repercussions than in the academic field.
This is especially true when it comes to the two great forerunners of modern art: van Gogh and Cézanne. Unrecognized outsiders in their lifetime, their paintings grew in the twentieth century to be the most sought after and expensive works in the entire art market. How this astonishing development came about, what tangled paths these paintings took, and what fakes and false attributions played a part in thisthese are the subjects Walter Feilchenfeldt discusses, with the advantage of his forty years of experience as an international adviser in the art trade. He explores a great number of new sources of provenance and deals with questions of authenticity on the basis of direct comparison. 500 illustrations, 387 in color.

Colorful anecdotes mix with surprisingly fine scholarship in this collection of translated, previously published essays and speeches. Not original or exhaustive, but intelligent, charming, and sophisticated.

Handy overview.......2007-09-22
I bought this book to review my shots--and to give my fellow producer/director a quick education in terms and shot design.
The book is very good, giving 2 page briefs on various types of shots, including a list of films to look for them in, and a storyboard to show how the shot proceeds. the list of places where the particular shot has been used is especially nice, as it lets you go to the library of films and see how a shot works.
It is in a fairly large and somewhat awkward format being wider than it is high--it's better to keep this one in the office or at home to scan when thinking than to take out in the field--a field book would be nice, as it could be used to explain shots to the actors/subjects (I'm shooting a documentary and jargon is Greek to most people.)
Not what I expected.......2007-08-24
But then if I'd really paid attention to the title of the book I'm sure I'd have figured it out.
While I applaud Jeremys' interests in movies and his desire to make them and share his 'experience' with us this book does not actually teach you anything about how to set up these shots. All it does is point out shots that you will probably already know. One thing that really does grate is that instead of consulting an experienced DP to find out the names of these shots he has come up with his own, which he feels are more descriptive.
I'd say that if you have a very short history of watching films then perhaps there is something you can learn from this book. However, if you have any experience whatsoever with a camera this book will prove to be a waste of time and (sadly) money.
The illustrations are good. Of a storyboard level and at least give you an idea of how to represent an idea but sadly the book was let down by the fact it didn't really deliver anything useful.
The definitive shot guide..........2007-06-18
This book explains the language of film in a simple, visual style. In clearly grouped sections, it shows a large, clear visualization of the movement with a description of how it is achieved, and the name the industry recognizes for that move.
It covers all the basics, plus many unusual, technical or simply rarely used angles and moves, making it the definitive work for the indie filmmaker and above.
An awesome reference book.......2007-05-14
I've seen this book by Jeremy Vineyard tagged as simplistic and cursory. If you're a super-hip film school graduate who's been involved in the industry, this book may not be worth your time.
However, if you're an amateur, like myself, this book makes a great reference. I recently shot a short film and used this book extensively while storyboarding.
Easy enough for children and a good reference for the amateur filmmaker. I've definitely gotten my money's worth on this one.
Brilliant, a must have for film-makers.......2007-01-16
Just buy it! Explains every standard shot, with examples.

Great Drawings.......2000-07-05
Like I said, the drawings are great, but the story, despite creative, is not that great, especially the end, wich is predictable, very predictable. If you expect Spawn to show up, it's best if you buy Blood And Salvation, in this one the main characters are two lesbian women.

Your favorite TV shows, movies, and social phenomena are approached with a queer sensibility in this anthology. Wilma and Betty finally get it on, and although Batman and Robin don't, it's not for lack of trying on Robin's part. Ex-gays get their share of ridicule, but there's also some good-natured ribbing of earnest homosexuals, including "Heather Has a Mommy and a Daddy" and "Rejection Letter from Bedsheet Books, Publisher of Lesbian Novels," in which the editor chastises the applicant for giving her protagonists unandrogynous names and creating sympathetic male characters, then queries, "Why doesn't your heroine have a cat?" In Jeff Black's hilarious "6,240 and Counting," Larry Kramer lambastes gay men for not doing enough to prevent Andrew Lloyd Webber from killing American musical theater, and reminds his readers of what it means to be Larry Kramer: "I was called a genius by the very people who invented the guillotine!" The mysterious Saint delivers parodies of half a dozen prominent gay and lesbian authors, including "Felicity Guano" and "Edmund Wimp." While the script for the "Chandler Comes Out" episode of Friends drags on far too long, and the revelations about Nancy Drew's best friend, George, are old hat to anyone who's read Mabel Maney's Nancy Clue and Hardly Boys books, there are certainly enough funny and clever bits here to bring a smile to just about anybody's face. And, as the editors remind us, "Parody is constitutionally protected. So nyah, nyah, nyah."
Customer Reviews:
Occasionally uneven, but some fantastically funny parts........1999-07-30
Actually, I'm one of the authors in the anthology - Cait Glasson, "Paul's Letters to the Lesbians" - and so I'll only talk about the others' stories. The anthology is uneven in places - some stories, while extremely good pastiches, are not tremendously funny, although perhaps if I were more of a fan of the parodied authors I'd think differently - but contains some extremely funny material as well. Some that stick out in my mind, for instance, would include R.E.Neu's "Heather Has a Mommy and a Daddy", which is absolutely priceless, while Shelly Rafferty's "Rejection Letter" is a cruelly accurate skewer of the queer small-press industry.
Worth picking up for those two alone, there are some other real gems hidden in this one. And I purposely do not include my own in that; I'll leave reviewing that to someone with a little less at stake.

Book Description
Hollywood has seen the number of camerawomen quadruple in the past fifteen years. Women Behind the Camera is the first book to offer an in-depth look at the lives of camerawomen and their struggles to succeed in a male-dominated field. Krasilovsky presents interviews with 23 camerawomen, most of whom are pioneers in Hollywood and whose experiences cover the full range of the Camera Department. The camerawomen interviewed include all four women Directors of Photography who have achieved membership in the prestigious American Society of Cinematographers, one of the first female camera assistants to work at the BBC, camerawomen who worked on Star Trek VI and Terminator 2, and a full range of documentary, experimental, and video camerawomen. These pioneering women, who have filmed in war zones, on mountain peaks, underwater, and on Hollywood sets, discuss their influences, goals, and experiences with directors and stars, and the art of cinematography.
Book Description
Puerto Rican music in New York is given center stage in Ruth Glasser's original and lucid study. Exploring the relationship between the social history and forms of cultural expression of Puerto Ricans, she focuses on the years between the two world wars. Her material integrates the experiences of the mostly working-class Puerto Rican musicians who struggled to make a living during this period with those of their compatriots and the other ethnic groups with whom they shared the cultural landscape.
Through recorded songs and live performances, Puerto Rican musicians were important representatives for the national consciousness of their compatriots on both sides of the ocean. Yet they also played with African-American and white jazz bands, Filipino or Italian-American orchestras, and with other Latinos. Glasser provides an understanding of the way musical subcultures could exist side by side or even as a part of the mainstream, and she demonstrates the complexities of cultural nationalism and cultural authenticity within the very practical realm of commercial music.
Illuminating a neglected epoch of Puerto Rican life in America, Glasser shows how ethnic groups settling in the United States had choices that extended beyond either maintenance of their homeland traditions or assimilation into the dominant culture. Her knowledge of musical styles and performance enriches her analysis, and a discography offers a helpful addition to the text.

EDDIES IN THE MAINSTREAM.......2001-04-26
This book is everything other reviewers have said, and more. For it doesn't cover some encapsulated mono-ethnic phenomenon. Long before Diz, Puerto Ricans were a permanent part of mainstream jazz. They made up almost half JR Europe's WWI Hellfighters band, and were present in some of the most famous black swing bands (and you thought it was just Juan Tizol!) Moreover it was largely PR music and musicians who added to Cuban roots what turned them into US salsa. As anybody who has read my LATIN JAZZ knows, I couldn't have written parts of it without Glasser and I'm glad to acknowledge the fact publicly. JOHN STORM ROBERTS
Puerto Rican History seen through the evolution of its music.......2000-04-15
Ruth Glasser illustrates how the political circumstances, the particular situations of some of the social sectors, and the geographical settings of the Puerto Rican population produced the musicians that created a musical corpus which in turn identified Puerto Ricans as a people in the first half of the 20th century. The text gives an account of how those musicians forged the template of popular Puerto Rican music for the century, while contributing to the popular music of other Latin American cultures. It helps us comprehend, from a music perspective, how the interaction of innumerable conditions and situations and their consequences sculptured the elements of a national culture.
My Music is My Flag.......1999-12-30
"My Music Is My Flag" is a rare and genuine contribution, as well as a very provocative and insightful analysis, of the history of Puerto Ricans and their music in New York City during the period of 1917 through 1940.
However, this book "failed" to mention the enormous contributions and the importance of "Pregones"(Musical cries of street vendors used to attract customers...in many cases they were bawdy, double entendre compositions. Lyrics patterned after the "pregon" also appeared in many compositions by Puerto Ricans). Many of these "pregones" were recorded in New York. A perfect example was "El Botanico", done on a 78, inspired by Manuel Jimenez "Canario". He recorded it with his band on June 8, 1929. Pedro Flores, Rafael Hernandez, Mirta Silva, Johnny Rodriguez and many others also recorded "pregones". Johnny Rodriguez did them all from New York. These "pregones" were very important, as they reflected much about the economic and social conditions of the Puerto Ricans.
Nevertheless, Ruth Glasser has made an important contribution to our understanding of the role Puerto Rican musicians have played in the development, growth and evolution of Latin music today.
Highly recommended!
An invaluable intro to the musica of Nuyoricans.......1999-08-05
As both a musician and anthropologist, I find this book helps fill a tremendous gap in the musical history of US Latinos, and Nuyoricans in particular. It is also an excellent example of how to conduct ethnomusicological research with concienza. I'm using it as a required in my MUSIC FOLKLORE course.
A must for lovers of authentic Puerto Rican music........1999-06-29
I wrote a paper in Graduate School on "The Impact of American Colonialism on Puerto Rican Music." Ms. Glasser's book served as a principal resource. I was totally unaware of the existance of such notables as Rafael Hernandez and Pedro Flores. The story behind the orgins of the song, Preciosa, was fascinating. It has become my personal anthem. Today, there is a new version of the song being played on the radio by Marc Anthony. It always brings a tear to my eye. In Ms. Glasser's book I have found a part of my heritage that I didn't know existed. I was born and raised in New york City. My parents came to this country from Puerto Rico in 1948. They, like many of the self exiled musicians in the book, came to New York from Puerto Rico seeking a better life and economic prosperity. This is a wonderful book, with plenty of anecdotes and heart warming narratives. I intend to buy a copy for my parents and my brother. It is a part of our history that must be told. Bravo, Ms. Glasser.

Good beginner/low intermediate level book.......2006-03-25
Its wasn't as good as Points Schmoints but was still good.
I did not like the fact that the author reused some of the same hands. For the cost of the book, he can be original enough to come up with 15 new hands.
Not on the same level as the original, but still strong.......2005-09-27
Marty again checks in with a high-quality tip book in the same format as his stellar "Points Schmoints". Bergen digs a little deeper into many of the topics he only touched in the original. Again, the material should hit a home run with novice to intermediate players, who will find a wealth of points to ponder.
The humor is not quite as pithy here, but the content is still solid.
Improve your bridge game.......2003-05-02
A wonderful collection of tips and anecdotes that is sure to improve your game. Sequel to the 1996 Bridge Book of the Year.
Follow-up to Popular Title Instructs, Less Humorously.......1999-12-29
Marty Bergen's follow-up to his justly popular "Points Schmoints" (imaginatively titled "MORE Points Schmoints") expands on the principles outlined in the earlier volume. Unfortunately, it lacks some of the sparkle and zip of that first effort. One wonders if the author himself did not suspect this; a short introduction detailing three years of football watching and general procrastination before tackling the sequel comes off as something of a mea culpa. Rest assured that much valuable information is here and many Bridge conventions only touched on in "Points Schmoints" are explored in detail now. For players still learning the fine points of the game (like this reviewer), this volume is an invaluable tool for understanding what stands behind such names as Jordan, Drury, Puppet Stayman, etc, and is a fine primer in the art of playing them. Sadly, the clever interweaving of literary and actual anecdotes that punctuated the lessons of the first book feel forced and contrived here. Some of the humorous lines are even recycled verbatim from "Points Schmoints." While Bergen's lessons are as relevant as ever, when compared with the scintillating earlier effort, the reader of "More Points Schmoints" can't help but come away feeling just a little disappointed.

Customer Reviews:
Great resource for enhancing facilitation!.......2004-04-16
I found The Art of Facilitation to be an easy-to-read, complete guide in helping to better understand facilitation. I suggest that every beginner facilitator should read this. The authors wrote it specifically outlined and detailed, yet not too complicated. It is a good book to keep close by as a quick reference source. The breakdown of the book allows it to be a wonderful training guide complete with a toolkit to assist your every need of facilitation.
Excellent book on facilitation.......2002-07-04
A very good book on one of the most difficult arts that of drawing together a group through facilitation.
Distinguishing Facilitation Powerfully and Simply.......2000-03-31
The Art of Facilitation is written in simple language. It cuts through the academic tendency to complicate this domain, and in doing so displays the authors mastery of it.
The Art of Facilitation elucidates what it takes to facilitate groups powerfully and provides pathways, tools and processes for this.
This book will provide people new to facilitation with an intellectual analysis of it and old hands clear pathways to doing complex things simply. I use it all the time as a resource in my pratice as a professional facilitator and it is the required text in facilitator training courses which I lead for Zenergy.
I would also recommend Hunter et al's other books: Co-operacy, The Zen of Groups, The Essence of Facilitation.
New Facilitators must read!.......2000-03-28
The Art of Facilitation is a must read for new facilitators or trainers. It is easy to read and offers practical advice and activities for newcomers to the field of facilitation. This is one of the few facilitation books to offer a chapter on facilitating yourself. Not as advanced as other facilitation books (Masterful Facilitation or Facilitator's Guide to Particiapatory Decision Making) but recommend this as part of any facilitator's library of resources.
A great guide for "first time" facilitators!.......1998-09-15
I have found this book a great resource to augment the training of first time facilitators and coaches. It provides many practical exercises, with numerous tips that help to demystify facilitation and increase the first time facilitator's success.
